something that just came to my mind
i think something that many mlvn shippers don’t realize (when some of them become complete and utter assholes to us for shipping byler and hoping so much for it to actually be canon in the show) is that, in the scenario that mlvn isn’t canon and byler is instead, they’ll just be sad for a little while but for them, nothing will change. there are countless other giant mainstream tv shows with incredible straight ships they can watch and overall, it doesn’t effect them at all.
this is NOT the same for byler shippers. the queer community is rarely ever represented well in big mainstream media. byler could be, quite literally, monumental for us. stranger things is the biggest show in the world and for the main character AND pairing to be inarguably gay? that’s huge!! plus, it sheds light to so many issues that closeted gay kids face to the entirety of its viewers—many of which have never even considered what we go through. on top of that, countles gay kids will finally see themselves represented and accepted by the number one show in the world, who spent five seasons building up this moving gay romance— and it may help people, like mike and will did, not feel like a mistake.
this is incredibly important to us, much more than so many others realize.

I thought I was a lesbian for almost 5 years, I was very, very wrong. I thought I was a demi-girl, then I thought I was gender-fluid, I was also wrong. But just because I was still figuring out my identity does not mean that I wasn't valid in how I presented and I should have been given respect and understanding no matter what stage I was in
