being a college student is so primal. Like a wolf roaming the tundra, my only thought is of my next meal. Unlike a wolf roaming the tundra, I have an analytical essay due next week

Saturday! A huge clean of my room, tonnes of emails, papers and letters today! Doesn’t sound like much but I completed so much from my never ending to-do list!

A day in the crèche, working on my butterfly data spreadsheets and feasibility report. Had a lab meeting over lunch followed by a meeting with my supervisors about my work so far and feasibility report!

An incredibly productive day, starting at 5:30am to get back to Cambridge in time for a doctors appointment. In the department I wasworking on my feasibility report for the department, had a lab meeting and a meeting with my supervisor, then helping out with the King’s Student Picture Sloan Scheme (and getting first pick from the college art collection!) and then a new graduates dinner event in the department!

Remembering Lions private gallery viewing with Margot Ragett!
I also did about 60 butterfly specimens in the morning before travelling down to London especially for this event!

Please read if you’re a student
You are NOT PROCRASTINATING, if - you’re sick - you have headache - you feel pain - you’re exhausted - you feel anxious - you have had big changes in your life that make you feel tired/restless/anxious/sad - you have to skip a class/take rest because of reasons I mentioned above. It’s not procrastinating. You’re not lazy. Everyone needs to have rest and take care of themselves when they’re sick. IT IS NOT OKAY TO WORK IN PAIN. Don’t burn out. It’s not worth it. Do not feel guilty. After some rest and relaxing you will study even more effectively. If you feel pain, - take a medicine if it works for you - put all of your books away - take warm shower - eat at least 1 healthy thing and 1 treat/feel-good-food, drink water - go to bed, sleep or read a book/listen to music that is not related to your school (if you have headache/migraine I suggest you to switch off the lights and just sleep) - just take your time - it’ll be all okay.

types of healthy coping skills
1. self-soothing
comforting yourself through the 5 senses
Touch: stuffed animals, stress balls, taking a bath, a soft blanket
Hear: music, audio book, guided relaxation
See: snow globe, glitter, calming images, art, anything that pleases you visually
Taste: tea, mints, gum
Smell: lotion, candles, incense
2. distraction
removing your focus from the stressor for a period of time
puzzles, art, crafting, reading, movies, gaming, exercise, being social
3. opposite action
doing the opposite of the impulse that aligns with a positive emotion
affirmations, inspiration, lighthearted and encouraging focus
4. emotional awareness
identifying and constructively expressing what you’re feeling
journaling, listing emotions, using a emotional identification chart, drawing, therapy
5. mindfulness
centering and anchoring yourself to the present moment
meditation, guided relaxation, yoga, breathing exercises, candle gazing, going for a walk
6. ask for help
this is important to do when you feel like your coping skills are not enough or they are too negative and detrimental
therapy is ideal for helping a person create a healthy coping strategy and incorporate it into their life
*a coping skill is considered healthy if it helps you to deal with stress more positively, does not hinder your progress, and isn’t harmful physically or mentally. A coping skill can become negative when it is used to completely avoid dealing with the stressor.

After a 2.5 hour long art history tour of the college and chapel I went into the Gibb’s building and found this amazing view of the front court. I had a brief meeting with the Chaplain and then later that evening formal drinks with the Provost (head of the college) in his lodgings with the other new graduates! They were serving a wonderful wine called ‘Primordial soup’, very nice biology link!
At home, I spent a long time cooking and cleaning and getting the place more organised!

[08/10/19]
Today was a full day, from a safety induction at 10am to the Footlights at 11pm.
Freshers’ fair was spread over a field and a local sports hall, full of societies and clubs to join. I had a tour of the gardens and grounds from the Head Gardener, which meant we were able to walk on the lawns right up to the fountain in the front court. (Oh and I learnt Cambridge calls them ‘Courts’ rather than ‘Quads’ as Oxford do)
Then there was games night, and we spent ages playing Codenames which was very fun, before going to the adc theatre to see the Footlights!
