“But if you squinted and ignored the pile of corpses, and the F.B.I. agent whose life was hollowed out for good, “The Americans” was, in its final moments, a portrait of a successful marriage. It was about a life spent raising kids and working long hours, entering a new stage: retirement and an empty nest.”

This shows just keep getting better and better! Something I want to ask you was what is up with Claudia in S1? Was she really trying to screw with Elizabeth/Phillip or not? I mean she did end up killing that guy by herself and told him her story but still telling Liz about Irina idk I just get vibes from here.
Claudia is just a shady bitch. But in truth, I think this is one of the wonderful things about the show is that it functions in shades of grey and the characters have complex and sometimes conflicting allegiances.

Starting S2! Thanks for the reply back. Oh man I sad to hear that the show won't do many flashbacks make sense since there's only since times passed in real life. Still have hope for them talking about the past. OMG S1 finale!! Thank goodness the two of the are okay health & relationship wise. I am sad about Gregory I love his character and want more but at least it was his choice. Super worried about my girl Nina sometimes I like Stan but sometimes I don't. 🤷🏽‍♀️
You are in for a treat, my friend. Honestly, this show is incredible and only gets better and better. Seasons 3, 4 and 6 are my personal favourites and astoundingly good. And yeah, it’s definitely a show where you are constantly stressing for your faves but in my opinion every character gets a satisfying arc. Nina’s storyline in season 2 is especially great. I hope you enjoy the ride! I’m jealous that you get to experience the show with fresh eyes!

It doesn’t seem right to ask. He’ll tell her when he wants to. He’d listened so patiently that night, as she spoke aloud everything she’d kept hidden for the past 15 years. He’d always been listening, waiting for her to speak. All this time, and she hadn’t noticed. Hadn’t wanted to notice. But now here he is, in front of her, and suddenly she is listening, wants to know everything about this man, the boy he was. She wants to know his name. But it doesn’t seem polite to ask.
Then one night she thinks, politeness be damned. And she asks him anyway.
It’s late, the kids are long asleep. She’s just gotten in from making a dead drop, giving him an assuring nod as she enters their bedroom to let him know it went okay. She squeezes his arm and immediately heads for the bathroom, tired and gritty.
She turns on the shower and lets steam fill the bathroom, then strips down and climbs in. With eyes closed she hears Philip enter the bathroom a few minutes later, hears the clink of his belt buckle on the floor and the rattle of his watch on the countertop. He climbs into the shower with her, the space between them tight in the small stall.
His eyes are on her, observant and calm as she lathers her shampoo and rinses.
“Paige didn’t do so well on her math test,” he says after a while, frowning.
“Oh. She’ll be okay,” Elizabeth says with a nod. “How was hockey practice?”
Philip winces and it makes her break into a grin.
“That bad?” she asks, almost giggling.
“His shins are black and blue but he stuck it out. His legs are just growing so fast. His balance on the ice changes every day.”
“What’s your name?” she asks suddenly. The brazenness of it makes her feel small, like a child who’s just overstepped. She braces herself for him to close off, though she doesn’t know why.
“Misha,” he says, a droplet of water stuck on his eyelash. It moves when he blinks.
“Hmm.” She nods. “It suits you.”
He gives a noncommittal shrug. “It did.”
“Just Misha? Or…” She searches his face, his smooth jawline, the way his eyes droop when he’s tired.
“Mikhail. But I was more of a Misha.”
“I didn’t have any nicknames. Only from my mother.”
Philip reaches for the bar of soap. “What did she call you?”
“Nadenka,” Elizabeth whispers, and feels like she’s summoning a ghost.
She looks down at the shower floor, the water swirling slowly towards the drain. “Is it okay that I asked?”
Philip nods. “It’s okay. I wanted to tell you.”
She meets his eyes, her voice low. “Good. I wanted to ask.”
She twists her long hair on top of her head and turns off the water, reaches for a towel.
In bed she stretches out along the length of his body and asks what he remembers from back home. Watches the rise and fall of his chest. Tries to picture him in Tobolsk. When he says the name he smiles, and for a moment her heart aches to know Misha, the man who stopped existing all those years ago in a room flooded with daylight, a room with floorboards that creaked beneath her feet as she turned and met Philip for the first time.

Henry should stay. He's doing so well there. This is where his future is. It's the best thing for him, Elizabeth.

Just started watching Americans WHOA! Amazing show! I heard about it ages ago but never watch it till this summer. Trying to avoid spoilers but curious since your blog was the first that came up when I search the tag was 1x01 the first time Elizabeth & Phillip made love? Lol not just sex so they can have their kids but truly love? If this anyway spoil a flashback we get later in the show feel free to say :))
Hello! So happy to hear The Americans getting new watchers. In answer to your question, yes, generally most fans take 1x01 to be the first time Philip and Elizabeth ‘make love’. There aren’t that many flashbacks as the show goes on, so really it’s about your own interpretation. I definitely read it as the first time they have totally emotionally connected sex with romantic feelings.

What was your favorite line of dialogue from this last season?
Joel Fields: The one I just cannot get out of my head is when Elizabeth comes home with the [Russian dish] zharkoye and Philip has just stuffed himself with Chinese
food, and he tells her that. She just looks at him, and he realizes he should have eaten it anyway. So he takes a bite, but even though he
takes a bite, it's kind of too late. He
missed his opportunity, so she goes and she pours it into the garbage disposal. I just found that
to be the most heartbreaking marriage moment. Basically, The Americans is a show of heartbreaking marriage moments. For some reason that one that added in the food just destroyed me.

still life
here to ruin your day don’t @ me (just kidding pls do)
X
She is a focused painter. Her lips are a thin line and the radio drones in the background. Neither of them like silence anymore. When she paints she wears her hair in a ponytail, like she hasn’t in years. Not Nadezhda and not quite Elizabeth either. She’s someone in between. And she paints, wearing one of his old shirts, one of the two he brought. She swims in it, looking impossibly small and infinitely powerful.
The canvases are modest in size; paint is expensive and unnecessary. But the Centre has made the two of them comfortable, well-looked after. The apartment is bright and clean and close to a supermarket that always has fresh apples. The bed is large, and at night they cling to each other like magnets, afraid of what will happen if they let go.
He stands behind her chair with a cup of tea. Outside the sky is rosy with dusk, and she’s recreated the color perfectly, her brush moving in confident strokes. He kisses the back of her neck where new hairs curl towards her nape.
“Hey,” she says quietly, eyes fixed on the canvas.
“You should get changed. He’ll be here soon.”
“I know. This light is good. I don’t want to lose it.”
He settles into the armchair in the corner, watching her. Beneath his shirt her legs are bare, except for a pair of gray woolen boot socks. He is overcome with the need to tell her he loves her, but he knows she knows. So he sits and reads until she finishes her painting, swishing the brush around in a jar of cloudy water, the signal that she is done.
He comes up behind her again, his arm settling across her chest, and studies her work. A lump settles in his throat when he sees it: the pitch of the roof, the windowsill, the glow from the lamp in the corner. And outside, below, in the driveway, a white car. A hockey goal. Two shadowy figures in the twilight.
“It’s springtime now,” she says. She drops her head and kisses his forearm.
There’s a knock at the door. He squeezes her shoulder and murmurs, “That’s Gabriel.”
