The fact that they couldn't give us a scene of Alicent enduring her teenage pregnancies and worriedly confiding in her father which could've garnered some level of sympathy, but instead they gave us scenes of-
An underage Aegon masturbating.
An original character for adult!Aegon to SA.
A Green Council that completely reduces Alicent's involvement.
Child fighting pits.
More SA directed at Alicent from Larys Strong.
A completely illogical scene of Rhaenys and Meleys crashing through the dragonpit and murdering countless civilians.
...all of which could've been devoted to worldbuilding that actually explained why Alicent and the rest of the Greens feel as justified in their wariness towards Viserys and Rhaenyra's lackluster decision making.
They gave us so many unnecessary scenes that exist purely for shock value. It’s a cheap attempt at drumming up the feelings people had during seasons 1-4 of GOT.
And by doing this they lost critical time where they could produce actual nuance for both sides. Show the real reason that team green doesn’t and shouldn’t give a crap about what Viserys wanted, and why they had every right to pursue their claim.
We got to see Rhaenyra have a miscarriage but not a single scene of Alicent giving birth (much younger and scared and crying for her mother)?! We got to see Rhaenyra marry Daemon in an uncomfortable and boring blood ritual but not Alicent’s wedding where she had the opportunity to voice or show her displeasure in her circumstances and see how creepy Viserys is marrying a child?! We get a bunch of scenes of Viserys caring about, and doing things for, Rhaenyra but no scenes of Viserys rebuffing and intentionally ignoring his children (except the driftmark fight but again that’s showing him standing up for Rhaenyra more than ignoring the team green kids).
If we actually got scenes showing Alicent suffering instead of implying it and hoping that (intentionally obtuse) fans will get the picture, and scenes showing just how different Viserys mistreats his other kids compared to Rhaenyra instead of having characters just say it out loud. We might have had a show that produced more fans that are on the fence. But instead we have a show that uses critical time trying to shock you with illogical death, SA, and generally uncomfortable sex scenes. Thereby overshadowing any opportunity for people to understand team green and sympathize with them

listen I’m so glad you all are having fun with the dragon incest show, but I need you to understand that from the outside all I see is approximately 14 posts per day of people in truly horrific wigs with captions like “baegael did nothing wrong except all the murders”

I will never forgive HOTD for making me sit through TWO Rhaenyra births and TWO Rhaenyra weddings…
But never having us see Alicent’s wedding or births. Scenes that would have forced the fans to confront the true reality of how despicable her situation is. It would force viewers to see a child, devastated, as she walks down the aisle to her creepy old man of a husband. It would force viewers to watch a little girl have a child. Completely unprepared and alone, crying for her mother and finding no sympathy. She has no father to protect her. No mother to guide her and comfort her. No husband who cares about her.
It would force team black to stop seeing her as the evil seductress, for even a moment. And see her true vulnerability. See how she doesn’t, and never did, want this. See how these are not consequences of her actions, but instead the consequences of the men around her that she has to suffer for them. Because they don’t care about her. Viserys doesn’t care about her.
These are scenes that are meant to bring sympathy to her character. To give Alicent a reason to be righteously angry at the family and system that broke her down and stole her childhood. It gives Alicent a valid motive to fight aside from fear. And it takes away the chances for team black to deny her suffering at least a little bit.
Because as the current narrative sits, it’s easy to ignore Alicent’s experience and warp it into a much more pleasant story. They see Alicent “seducing” the king and then she is already married. And then she’s pregnant and the babies magically appear. No screaming or crying or bleeding involved. All is good. The teenager definitely didn’t suffer at all. And by doing this some people can’t sympathize as much or they are given allowances to intentionally not sympathize.
Instead. The current narrative allows for Alicent to be the seductress, the crazed woman, the jealous bitch, and the villain. But if we saw what she actually went through. Alone, scared, suffering, neglected, and holding it all in. We would be allowed to see her as she truly is. The victim. Finally crushing under the weight of it all and lashing out.
(And the narrative would be all the better for it because instead of feminist icon team vs crazy trad wife and co (as far as team black sees it), we would have woman fighting against patriarchal narrative for her own claim vs woman fighting against patriarchal narrative to destroy the people who hurt her)

My personal modern au headcanons:
Criston is a marine. Knew he had the discipline and wanted to prove himself. Met Alicent at a benefit she was involved with (has been supporting her before, during, and after the divorce). Stepped in to support the kids with all their big milestones (competitions, graduations, recitals, etc.). Prioritized his work for most of his life, but has grown fond of the family life he has a taste of with Alicent. Daeron is his little buddy and he’s teaching him to fight. Just a really good friend to Alicent and hoping for more (but will not be pushing that boundary and is waiting for her). Uses the excuse of being lonely and wanting “an amazing home cooked meal” to see Alicent all the time. Also uses playing with Daeron as an excuse.
Alicent divorced Viserys pretty young and decided to use the connections she formed from her frequent donations and cultural events she ran to get a position at a museum. She built her way up and works as museum curator, specializing in religious art and artifacts, specifically medieval and renaissance artworks. She has offers to work as an independent fine art curator for high profile clients, but she rejects the offers (she feels far too guilty betraying the people who helped her and for prioritizing fine art over religious work). Is absolutely in love with Criston but terrified to push the relationship and hurt her kids (they are totally in support she’s just being anxious for nothing).
Aegon is enrolled in university far longer than he should be but only because he loooooves the frat boy life (and because his parents will cut him off with no degree). He is enrolled in business school but has no desire to be in business (it’s just what his dad did and what his mom pushed for a while before the divorce). He makes money no problem tho because he’s super popular on TikTok and takes every endorsement under the sun and his thirst traps blow up. (He probably also sells substances and is the guy on campus for it). Got a golden retriever named Sunny for the frat but it’s HIS dog.
Helaena is in school for entomology. She works part time at the natural history museum teaching kids about bugs and doing a bug petting portion where kids can interact with the insects and take pictures. She’s developing her skills in bug pinning and preservation. She’s really hoping her skills and degree will let her get a better position at the museum. Crochet girlie through and through. She’s got a super boho fashion style and makes a lot of her clothes herself and thrifts what she can’t. Decided to adopt a bearded dragon and named it Dream. She brings Dream to work and incorporates her into the tours.
Aemond is a senior in high school. He’s popular, but has very intense beef with the sports bros at school (his older nephew, the Stark boy whose his best friend, and all their crowd), which impedes his social status a bit (he doesn’t care at all). Is valedictorian and the teachers’ favorite student. Debate team and model UN champion. He’s currently torn between going to law school or pursuing politics (will decide why not both because he’s smart enough). Plans on taking the old family Great Dane, Vhagar, with him to uni if he can.
Daeron is in 4-6th grade. Really good at playing music, specifically guitar. Loves playing softball/baseball. Criston is his hero and he imitates him constantly. He’s popular at his school because he’s genuinely friendly to all the kids. Genuinely just happy to be included and spend time with his family. Loves to hang out with Aegon because he can be a menace without worrying about getting in trouble.
Calling all besties to debate with me!
Hotd modern!au, what would Criston work with?
I particularly see him in something like military official or a firefighter, lieutenant or capitan, something that involves fighting and security of some sorts.
In the same au, what would Alicent do?
In my head, she probably would divorce and have to redo her life, she's very clever, and I believe that she well versed in history, culture, knows a little bit about language and dialects, so I see her as either a professor or a tourist guide, I totally can see her showing monuments and explaining it, and I also can see her doing a slide presentation and telling students to write an essay for next Tuesday.
I also think about the children, Aegon would totally try to drop out of high-school and give up college, furthermore as a way to help his mother after the divorce. However, Alicent would force him to finish school and tell him to get a half-period job (maybe in mctargaryen), but I think he would try to take care of his siblings so his mother wouldn't worry.
Helaena and Aemond would clean the house and attempt to make some food (pasta, that's a lazy home alone sibling food), and I picture they would fight over who's turn it is to change Daeron's diapper (he only begin to walk recently).
Anyway, tell me you guys opinions and hc, I need some ideas.

the fact that alicent is mad at rhaenyra because she does whatever without thinking of consequences while alicent has to find ways to cope with how her life was ruined thanks to viserys, is very relatable. some of you are not elder daughters as far as i can see. also, it's not a modern world. but not even the writers understand that, let alone the tiktok gen z generation.

It's interesting that Rhaenyra is consistently framed as being "not like other girls" in such an extreme attempt at feminism that it veers way over to other side in that all the other girls in the story, especially those who act differently than she would or who act in opposition to her wishes, are somehow not as good as her or even evil.
As the show loves to show us, Rhaenyra's not like other girls. She loves being a bit of a rebel. She defies the rules of the world and doesn't care what anyone's opinion of her is. She embraces her sexuality. She's bold and says what's on her mind. Now, these are fine things for her as a character, for sure. The problem comes when looking at how the other girls are depicted and how the show expects you to feel about them vs Rhaenyra.
Alicent accepts her position in life as the daughter of a second son and marries for her family against her wishes. But it goes against what Rhaenyra wants, so she's evil. She should have just been more like Rhaenyra! Defied her father, said no to Viserys, went against the patriarchy... except Alicent does not have the privilege that Rhaenyra has as a dragon riding Targaryen princess, the king's beloved daughter and heir to the throne. What power did she have to resist the wishes of her lord father and the king? She acted like any girl of her time would, given the circumstances of her powerlessness, and yet somehow the show wants you to believe that's a character flaw.
Laena is second to Rhaenyra, something the show made painfully obvious when depicting her marriage with Daemon (which sucks especially because there was no indication that this was the case in the books; rather, her and Daemon were happily married and both were extremely close to Rhaenyra the entire time). Her death is changed from its original and unique tragedy to prop up Rhaenyra's eventual fate and its "epic" quality, so when it eventually happens we can view it as a true "dragonrider's death." Then, on the night of her funeral, her husbands finally gets with his first choice Rhaenyra. Laena who? She is made to look less in comparison to Rhaenyra.
Baela and Rhaena, despite having huge roles in the Dance and the aftermath, are largely sidelined by the writers. Baela's a fierce dragonrider like her mother... yet the only scene allowing her to show any aspect of that is left on the cutting room floor. Rhaena wants a dragon and is the only one of her family who isn't a dragonrider... yet the writers have yet to give her any personality beyond that of explore this aspect of her character with any depth. The twins' adult versions barely have any screen time or lines. Even when they are betrothed, seemingly without their prior knowledge, they can only smile by the side.
Helaena is a dragonrider, a dragon dreamer, a mother, a daughter. Forced to use her Targaryen royal womb to make heirs. But the writers aren't interested in exploring any aspect of her character in depth or showing her relationships with her family.
One woman is the exception, as she does share some qualities with Rhaenyra in that she's also not like other girls and the audience should root for her too... it's Rhaenys! She's got a dragon! She'll put it in the Greens' faces (never mind hundreds of innocents killed - so cool!). She'll call someone out for toiling their life in the service of men (even though she's done no differently with her own life!). And because girls support girls no matter what, of course she's Team Black all the way (even though her daughter died a continent away because of Daemon and her son was clearly killed because of Rhaenyra). Rhaenys will hitch onto the Black train despite everything that's happened, and in supporting Rhaenyra she'll take away Baela's claim to Driftmark and instead link both her granddaughters to the people who are the reason both of her children are dead...
