You weren’t sure at what point your simple expedition to surf turned into you, surfboard somehow detached from your ankle strap, kicking and fighting to gain a breath above the surface whenever you can, trying not to take in anymore water. It’s raining now too, which makes that last part ten times harder. You couldn’t breathe, couldn’t see, couldn’t hear, couldn’t think.

“Hey! Y’alright? We got ya.”

You’re able to make out two blurry figures with one eye, and then a boat. It’s small and rickety, but it’s a boat. You use your last reserve of strength to kick as hard as you can toward it, throwing your arm out desperately when you’re within reach. One of the figures pulls you closer, and you can guess from the size and feel of the hand that it’s most likely a man taking on all of your weight, as the other one grabs onto your other hand.

As soon as you get close enough to the side of the boat, they’re pulling you up and over the side, one of their arms coming around your back to set you down on the floor of the boat.

“Dude, she’s totally buggin’,” one of them says, your eyes finally flickering open. The blonde one who made that comment is standing over you, bent over with his hands on his knees. He collects his breathing for a second, seemingly exhausted after heaving you over the side of the boat, finally standing and walking back towards the wheel. “I’m gonna get us back.”

“Yeah, yeah I got her.”

You feel the words before you hear them, as vibrations against your arm that’s pressed up against the other boy’s chest. He moves you so your back is resting against the side of the boat, instead of him having to support your weight, still staying crouched down near to you.

You finally look up at him, eyes re-focusing on brown hair, brown eyes and freckles. He’s looking at you like you almost died, and like you still might any second, eyes full of concern.

You suddenly can’t breathe.

“Off,” you say. Boat boy throws his hands up, backing away from you. “No, off.” You gesture to the back of your wetsuit, the thought of undoing the zipper too much for you to handle right now. It’s not even your full suit, just the one with no legs and the long sleeves on top, but it’s still too much for you to handle right now. He quickly gets the picture, gesturing toward your back.

“Want me to help unzip it?”

You nod, leaning forward as much as you can so he can work at the zipper, the rough pads of his finger tips brushing against your spine as he goes. He gets it down to your bikini bottoms and you nudge him away so you can slip both of your arms out, leaning back up against the side of the seat when you’re finally free.

“Fuck,” you breathe, chest still heaving. You lean over the side of the boat to cough up what might be some sea water.

“You good?” He asks.

“Getting there.”

“What the fuck are you doing out here without a board?” the other boy accused. You didn’t notice the boat was now moving, hopefully bringing the three of you to steadier waters.

“Lost it,” you say, gesturing vaguely to your tattered ankle strap. It had completely ripped off, leaving behind a few inches of frayed string. You really liked that board, but it was getting old. You curse mentally at the thought of having to pick up a few extra shifts over the next couple of weeks to swing getting a new one.

“Her ankle strap broke, dude,” the brunette—who’s still hovering near to you like you might fall apart at any moment—tells his friend across the boat. He gently grabs your ankle, undoing the velcro and easing it off of your leg, holding it up to show his friend before he tosses it aside.

“Been meaning to get a new one,” you say lamely.

“Yeah, no shit.” The blonde boy seems annoyed with you, and you’re glad he’s not the one trying to comfort you. “Fucking kooks, never know what the fuck they’re doing.”

“M’not a kook,” you murmur, eyes shutting again, still trying to steady your breathing. You don’t have the energy to match his annoyance.

“Then how come we’ve never seen you around at school?” the one closer to you asks, hint of a smile on his face. He’s pretty cute, you can tell that much even in your current state.

“To be fair, never seen you two at school either.”

“That’s cause we never go,” blondie laughs, finally cracking a smile. “I’m JJ. This is John B.”

You nod, “Y/n.”

“Are you good now?” John B asks, eyes flickering over your body, hand resting on your shoulder. You’re suddenly self-conscious of your exposed body now, hardly even remembering what bikini you had put on today. You look down, feeling relieved upon seeing it was one of your nicer ones.

“Yeah, but, um, you wouldn’t have any water, would you?”

“Uh...” he trails off awkwardly. “I finished mine, and JJ is perpetually dehydrated.”

“That’s not true. We have beer.”

You just roll your eyes, gathering your wet hair over one shoulder.

“You kinda look like you could use one,” John B says, full on grinning now.

You only finish one beer by the time JJ pulls you guys back in; at some point you’d gone into the marsh. Your car was at the beach.

“Uh... could one of you give me a ride back to my car?” you ask as the three of you jump off the boat.

“Not it!” JJ calls, quickly heading into the shack you’d pulled up outside of without a second glance back at you.

“C’mon, I’ll take you,” John B says, flicking his head in the direction of a brown Volkswagen bus.

“Thank you, and um, thank you. For that, John B.” You tuck your arms back into your wetsuit, gesturing vaguely at the water. John B had given you a ratty old towel that was hidden in one of the boat seats, and you pulled it closer around your body as he opens the car door for you. “It was pretty bad out there for a sec. So thanks.”

“Oh yeah, no problem,” he blushes, shutting your door for you once you’re seated inside. “Glad you’re okay.”

After that, you make it a point to search for John B (and his friend JJ, of course) at school. But JJ wasn’t lying when he said they never show up, because you saw no sign of John B for a week. You tried not to let it disappoint you—you’d only met him once, after all. Once, when you were soaking wet, panicking, and coughing up water. You weren’t sure that was the best first impression. And maybe he just wasn’t in any of your classes. You didn’t even know what grade he was in.

But then it’s a Friday after school, you’re fast walking to catch the bus to your neighborhood, and you hear your name called out from across the basketball courts.

“Hey, Y/n!”

You turn, using your hand to block the sun out of your eyes so you can see who it is. John B is jogging over to you, much to the protest of his friends, including JJ, in the background, all piling into the brown van that you recognize from when he brought you back to your car. Your neck gets hot every time you think about how he’d been incessant about driving you all the way home, making doubly and triply sure that you were fine to drive when he finally gave in and took you to your car.

“How’ve you been?”

“Good, not surfing so much anymore,” you joke.

“I was gonna say, haven’t had to make any rescues recently,” he teases.

You push him on his shoulder, rolling your eyes. He lets the push with no real force behind it knock him back, using it as an excuse to step closer into your space once he’s steady again.

You clear your throat. You feel more confident talking with the boy now, standing before him fully clothed this time, not gasping for breath. But he’s still just as cute as he was last time, causing you to stumble over your next words. “A-And I also lost my board, so.”

“Ah, that’s right. Well,” he says, backing up towards where his friends are still calling out to him. Someone keeps laying on the horn, and you have to guess that it’s JJ. “Let me know when you get a new one. We should surf sometime. Y’know, that way I can keep an eye on you or whatever.”

“Oh, my hero.”

He laughs, turning and running off with his friends as you shake your head.

Your favorite thing to do when things at home got to be too much was take out your dad’s boat all by yourself, usually around sunrise if you could swing it. Not only was it a beautiful time to be out on the water, but you could usually sneak out undetected and take it without asking. That was a problem for you to deal with when you got back.

You hadn’t even brought a book or your phone this morning, preferring to just sit and listen to the sound of the Outer Banks waking up. It’s so tranquil that when a shout interrupts your moment, you jump so hard the entire boat shakes.

“Y/n!” the voice calls. “Shit, sorry.”

“John B? What are you doing all the way out here on a paddle board?”

“Long story,” he says, finally getting close enough for you to grab his hand. “Can I hitch a ride?”

He does all of the work pulling himself over the side, collapsing on the floor of your dad’s boat much in the same way you had after JJ and John B had practically rescued you by the beach that day.

“Are you okay?” You crouch down beside him, looking over his body for any scratches or bruises. You try to ignore the way his abs are contracting with every breath he heaves.

But he can see you looking anyway, huffing out a surprised laugh. “How is it that we always end up in this predicament?”

“Maybe I should be the one keeping an eye on you,” you tease, cracking the tiniest smile.

“Wouldn’t mind that.”

You downplay your embarrassment by passing him a towel, turning to make sure his paddle board is secured to your boat.

“So, what’re you running from?”

“DCS. They always try to surprise me in the morning, it blows. You?”

“Yikes, not sure I can top that one. I’m not really running from anything anyway. Just like it out here,” you shrug, hoping he’ll drop the subject even though you were the one that had changed it. He hums noncommittally.

“At 6AM? C’mon, everyone’s running from something.” John B appraises you for a second, eyes searching your face like he’s trying to read your mind. You don’t budge, shrugging again silently. But he doesn’t back down, and you’re guessing he doesn’t do that a lot. “Let me guess. Parents?”

His look is more smug than expectant, knowing he’d clocked you immediately. You roll your eyes.

“It’s not that bad, I mean. Definitely better than dealing with—sorry.”

“All good,” he waves you off, wrapping the towel tighter around his shoulders. “Is that why you were out surfing before the storm, too?”

You pull your knees up to your chest from your spot on the bench above him, holding them close to your body. It was the exact reason you were out there, needing to escape your parents’ yelling for at least one more hour before the storm locked you in with them for an unforeseen amount of time. You frown at the memory, looking down at your knees.

He speaks up again after you stay silent for a moment. “Sorry, didn’t mean to pry.”

At some point he had scooted closer to you, his face much closer now as he looks up at you, features guilt-ridden. He’s out here running away from DCS, still exuding enough empathy to listen to your family problems. So you know you’ll let it go for now, but still can’t resist the urge to tease him a little.

“Yeah, what is this, a therapy session?” You punctuate the joke with another push on his shoulder, feeling relieved when he laughs. It’s quiet for a moment while the boat settles, the two of you just looking at each other with small smiles, pink sky illuminating both of your faces.

“You’re right,” he says after a while. Your hand hadn’t moved from his shoulder, and he grabs your wrist between his index finger and thumb. “We should probably save that for the first date.”

“Who said anything about a first date? I thought we were just going surfing,” you tease. John B rolls his eyes, turning to sit up on his knees, body situating itself between your legs.

“You lost your board, remember? And it’s probably not the best idea for either of us, given our track record,” he murmurs. The towel has fallen from his shoulders, discarded somewhere on the floor of the boat. A still wet hand comes up to brush against the side of your face, droplets of water from his hair falling into your lap. He leans further into your space when you make no efforts to move, his other hand resting behind you as his arm brackets your leg. “Maybe a date on land?”

“That’s too bad. I kinda like when you save me.”

That’s all John B needs, leaning into kiss you finally, your heart threatening to beat out of your chest. He pulls back, but not too far, because you can feel his next words on your lips.

“Kinda like being saved by you, too.”

killing time | a Jonerys drabble

This is for the Anon who suggested we revisit the racing beans from that one fic I wrote where they were racecar drivers and it ended up far angstier than intended 🤣 Also uses prompt from @youwerenevermine “you’re an idiot”/“yes but I’m your idiot.” Ooooh and it is smutty 🤭

"I can't believe you think this is going to work."

That was a little much, Dany thought, hoisting herself onto the tool bench in the garage, swinging her feet back and forth, watching the handsome specimen of her husband bent in half in the engine of the Direwolf, his fine, tight ass wiggling in his grease-stained coveralls, which should have made him look like he was wearing a potato sack, but were pulling in all the right places. He'd tied the arms around his hips, his white t-shirt underneath stained with grease, sweat, motor oil, and if she was not mistaken-- a large swipe of chocolate from the cake their daughter had been eating before he put her to bed for her naptime.

He moved some more, shifting on his feet and she bit her lower lip, checking the clock hanging askew on the wall. They had a meeting in about two hours, and were killing time just lounging around the garage. It made her think of when they were teenagers, spending all their time in and around the garage, making messes and letting someone else clean it up.

Now they cleaned things up themselves. He also cleaned up nicely himself. He wiggled again and she wondered if he was doing this on purpose. She shifted uncomfortably on the bench, sitting on her hands instead of doing anything that might get her in trouble. He was <i>working</i>, as he liked to stress. He didn’t want distractions when he was working.

Although working wasn’t an apt enough word for what he was doing. Fucking up a perfectly good vehicle. That’s what he was doing.

Now he was adding some sort of extra filter which he claimed would give the Direwolf extra air flow, boosting its acceleration. It made no sense to her. Plus, he'd screwed with the fins on the back, which was <i>not</i> his job, that was Gendry's as their aerodynamics expert, but Jon knew better, always, he said.

Except for her.

She wrinkled her nose, when he pulled out from the engine and then spun around, dropping down onto the other side to scoot underneath the vehicle. Exasperated, she groaned. "What are you doing now?"

"Checking the fuel pump, I think it’s jacked."

"You're making shit up." He hummed underneath and kicked his feet around. After a few minutes of clanking around, she couldn't stand it any longer and climbed down, peering into the engine, disgusted at the wires he had crisscrossing everywhere. It made no sense. It was like the inside of his head. She scowled at him, when he emerged, swatting her ass lightly with the dirty rag in his hands. She rolled her eyes. "You're an idiot."

"Ah, but I'm your idiot."

Be that as it may, he was screwing up a perfectly good working engine because he couldn't just leave things alone. "That's not getting you anywhere, give me that." She swiped the wrench from him and crawled up onto the Direwolf's fender, small and spry enough to really get into the engine cavity. She made sure to wiggle her butt, in her tight jeans, just enough to tease him, while also kicking up her foot.

The mess he’d created was atrocious. She could not believe this chaos of an engine. Disgusted, she made a derisive snort. “I take it back, you aren’t an idiot.”

“Aye?”

“Aye.” She climbed out and threw one of the fuel injectors she had just removed at him, as he scowled. She tilted her face up to his, smirking. “You’re a moron.”

“Is that not the same?”

“Moron is worse to me. Idiot implies you have some sense of awareness of what you did, you just did it stupidly.”

He wagged the fuel injector at her. “This is perfectly fine!”

“It’s corroded!”

The fuel injector flew over his shoulder, after he tossed it and he grabbed her hips, hoisting her up onto the car’s side, tilting her back over the fiberglass to the roof, growling. “You’re impossible.”

She snapped her teeth on his bottom lip, groaning. “You are.”

“No you.”

“You!”

The next thing she knew they were over each other, his mouth hot on her sweaty neck, pulse racing against his tongue. She moaned for more, needy, grinding her hips up into his and scratched her nails down his shoulders, pushing them under his t-shirt sleeves to get to his bare skin.

“Jon,” she groaned, his palms under her arse to lift her higher against the car, while she furiously pulled at his coveralls. He kissed her, silencing her protests, tongue spearing into her mouth and she nipped at him, her fingers easing into his briefs to free him and thumb at his cock, fondling the thick, velvet length, hardening to steel in her hands.

He tilted his face down and kissed her, slowly, reverently. She smiled lazily. It was so nice and comfortable afterward. She met his gaze, loving and sleepy, gray eyes blown out to black. “You’re still an idiot,” she murmured.

Jon laughed and arched his brow, about to reply when they froze, hearing a door banging from somewhere near. “Uh…”

“Jon! Dany! Where are you? We have that sponsorship meeting today and I don’t want to go can I stay with Laena?” It was Arya, bellowing through the house.

They cursed, hurriedly righting themselves as best as they could. Dany winced, squeezing her legs together uncomfortably. “Arya? What are you doing here?”

“We have that thing!” She pushed open the door and stepped in, scowling immediately. “What are you doing?”

“Nothing,” they said at the same time.

Arya made a face. “Ew you both are gross. Were you fucking?” She didn’t wait and gagged. “Nevermind don’t tell me…” she trailed off distracted at the engine. She bowled, leaping for it. “Jon! What did you do!?”

At the same time, from the monitor on the table beside her, Laena began babbling, awake from her nap. Dany sighed, patting Jon’s cheek. “My idiot,” she murmured and kissed him, before skirting away to leave him to argue with Arya over what he’d done to the car.

All she knew was when it was ready to drive, it would be ready and she’d trust whatever he did. Even if it made zero sense. She winked at him when he caught her gaze across the garage and he made a face.

She laughed, skipping off to get their daughter and clean up. They had a race to go prep for.
