let's see... to answer your question... it's a little bit of a long story, so i'll make a read more! (there is a TLDR at the bottom if you want)

in late 2017, twitch was broadcasting a marathon of Duel Monsters. at that time, my partner, Jamie, was getting really invested into it, since he had mentioned how he liked it when he was younger. for me, i had heard of YGO on TV when i was younger too, but i felt like i couldn't get invested in it, so i never kept track of it. i was vaguely aware of YGO's continued spin-offs, but i never gave it a chance.

so, after a few weeks, his passion about the show and how much he loved Atem made me want to try giving it a shot, too. because of Megumi Ogata's Yugi Mutou, i was interested in starting from the Very Beginning with the Toei season (season 0). i was curious how subbed YGO might be.

so, we watched all of the Toei season together. i came to really love Yugi the most, as he is a very kindhearted protag (my favorite type of protag) as well as Jounouchi and Kaiba. i was surprised at how the story was about our connections with others. i really loved how different it was compared to what i expected or remembered about the series from the past. the focus on games in general as a medium for the story was really good.

i was hooked on it and respected it. i finally understood the appeal. i wanted to jump into Duel Monsters (sub) right away. and we did! we watched it all together, starting in early 2018.

it took several months to watch, and i enjoyed it! i remember feeling shocked and kinda sad that "the shadow realm" wasn't real, lol. i didn't realize it had been a show that was censored like that. we even watched the DSOD movie after. it was really cool... Yugi really is a character i adore!

for about about a year or so after, i was really invested into puzzleshipping. i didn't draw very much at the time because of my severe untreated carpal tunnel though, so there aren't much past works from me, nor did i ever make any ship art.

Jamie got invested into the spin-off YGO and started watching VRAINS while it was airing after seeing a post about Yusaku/Playmaker on here. i gave it a few episodes, and immediately gravitated to liking Ai. but, i was going through a tough time personally and felt a little fatigued (in general) and of YGO because it was such a long series. i didn't think i could do another 150+ anime. so, i dropped it after 3 episodes and did other things for a few years.

he would talk to me about how much he loved how VRAINS was going and about datastormshipping, and i happily listened even though i didn't understand. it was nice to be a support at the time when i felt too tired and stressed to participate. this went on into 2019 as it finished, and well after into 2020. though, it shifted into aiballshipping, but he kept me safe from spoilers.

on a whim, in the middle of 2022, i suggested we watch VRAINS together because i felt up for it again, and i wanted to watch an anime together. i was excited to learn about Ai more, as i saw some vague spoilers here and there about him. i immediately grew to love Yusaku and Ai a whole lot! i was excited every weekend we could watch together. it only took 3 months to watch all 120 episodes because i was that invested. i again felt like a fool for not continuing in the past...

...and you know the rest. it's impacted me a lot. i haven't stopped thinking or talking about them for nearly a year now. i'm even more impacted by their story than the Toei season or DM. i like the characters and story a lot more for VRAINS, so it's my favorite. i even picked up Duel Links because i wanted to learn how to play (i'm kind of bad at it). i'm currently in the middle of ZEXAL now, but i want to check out all the others eventually, too. exciting!

TLDR:

i got into it in 2017 because of my partner's influence. watched season 0, DM, and DSOD and loved it. fell off for personal difficulties in real life and fatigue with long series. picked up VRAINS again in 2022 after dropping it in 2018 after 3 episodes. am now insane (positive) and invested in YGO because it's so fun and good. i'm happy to be here and hope i can be for a long time

Personally I was nervous because of the prompts and trying to make everyone feel welcomed into participating. But thank you to @pyrachan for gathering feedback and producing the alternate prompts as an extra for everyone.

🌌And of course I can’t end my Holiday Matsuri mass post spree (yes this is the last of it) without saving birthday boy for last 💙 due to getting sick for Christmas 🎄 I couldn’t properly celebrate my zexal oc Ginga Okudaira’s birthday how I would have wanted on the 20th. Wish I could have drawn something but literally was to sick to move.

Anyhow I know he’d be proud of winning Best Performance at the Karaoke Contest this year! And super thanks to my lovely friend Ray-chan for helping take pics and filming my performance that day! 🌸💕 I love you dearly & thank you for hanging out with me at the con💖💙!

Ginga is probably the whole reason I created this blog. Anytime I sing, he gives me courage not just to get onstage but also to record. I think my performance of Howling went pretty well! Everyone enjoyed the costume gimmick with the wings xD! And probably 5 minutes after the contest ended, I got an Instagram message of someone saying they were just walking past when they heard me sing, they really enjoyed it & wished they could be up there singing with me ^_^! When I walked out the main events room a person came up to me to give me candy. When I walked in the halls & people who had attended the show saw me, they hollered compliments and gave me high 5s, And tonight someone who competed found my YT Channel & subscribed . My aim with Ginga has been to touch as many lives as I can positively and to bring people happiness through my art and music. It had felt like I had accomplished that, so now I can smile at last.

[fanfic] Extra Training

"Where are you going?" Ryouga wanted to know. Iris tucked her D-Gazer into her pocket, checked on her deck, and shrugged.

"To the movies with Haruto," she told him. Like she did every weekend. It was something to do that wasn't dueling - not that she disliked dueling, there wasn't really any way that she could, not with having grown up in a household of duelists. But it wasn't the be-all and end-all of her existence, and she only carried the deck around because Vector would start handing out knives if she didn't.

Not that Iris had anything against knives, either, but the way Ryouga and Rio both stared at Vector when he offered her extra lessons told her quickly they didn't need to know how good she was with them, even without Vector's help. Uncle Michael gave her sword-fighting lessons every weekend after all. Edged weapons were as useful a tool as a dueling deck, and one that most people were less likely to think an eighteen year old might use against them.

Iris far preferred to handle her own problems. The last time she'd complained about someone being annoying, everyone in the family plus a few extras - such as Uncles Michael, Thomas, and Chris, as well as Uncle Yuuma and Uncle Kaito, came down on the offender like the proverbial ton of bricks. It took months> for anyone to ever talk to her again at school.

At least she didn't have to worry about that with Haruto. They all liked Haruto and he knew how not to get on their bad sides. Plus, he'd learned more than a few things that his brother didn't know about, so he kept her secrets about what she could do that her elders didn't know.

And he was a fantastic sparring partner.

Ryouga regarded her thoughtfully, then nodded. "Enjoy yourself," was all he said. Iris knew what that meant - don't murder someone without one heck of a good reason. She was fine with that. Rio had taught her what a good reason was. So far she hadn't had to kill anyone and she didn't really want to. She liked learning dueling and fighting for reasons aside from blood-lust, no matter what Vector swore by.

So she headed out of the mansion and to the center of town, where Haruto sat outside of Heartland Tower and waited for her, kicking his feel lazily in a fountain. She vaguely remembered that he'd been a bit sickly and weak when they were children. Most of that had been before she'd come to this world, so she'd heard of it mostly as stories from Ryouga and Uncle Kaito, or from Haruto himself. When she'd first met him, he'd been getting better, and she'd helped him improve over the years.

Now one couldn't tell that he'd ever been at risk of dying at all. He leaped to his feet as soon as he caught sight of her and waved, eyes bright with joy.

"Ready?" He wanted to know as she drew closer. Iris smiled; she did enjoy spending time with him. And she enjoyed what they were about to do just as much. Maybe even a bit more.

"Ready." She nodded, one hand dropping down to where she kept her duel disk - and the little secret hidden inside the same pocket. Haruto nodded as well, and the two of them headed off. Both of them knew very well that Omoid - oldest offspring of Obomi and Orbital 7 - followed them. Omoid followed Haruto anywhere he went and did anything he could in order to help him.

Haruto had had to do a little reprogramming as he got older to make sure Omoid kept certain things he and Iris did a secret, but as long as they came home without any major injuries, most things could be hidden from the eye of elder siblings. Iris did wonder how much Uncle Kaito really knew. He didn't seem like the type of person who would easily be deceived. Yet if he did know what they did - not every lesson they had from Uncle Michael was sanctioned - he said nothing at all about it.

They arrived at the Arclight mansion relatively quickly. This wasn't their original home, or so Iris had been told. They moved to Heartland on a regular basis a few years earlier and set up residence. That was fine with her. She liked spending time with all of them.

Though she wasn't ever going to forget the day that Uncle Thomas and Uncle Vector both ended up baby-sitting her at the same time. Three fire trucks, five police cars, and she still didn't know how they'd avoided being arrested. Ryouga didn't like to talk about it.

Michael welcomed them there as soon as they entered, guiding them to the familiar sparring grounds.

"It's just us today," he told them. "Chris is working with Kaito and Mizael helping out Father." His lips twitched. "I'm not quite certain where Thomas is, though.

That was fine with Iris, and apparently Haruto to. She'd known about them being busy anyway. She slipped her duel disk out, flipped open the hidden slot in the back, and her sword hilt dropped into her hand.

"I'm ready for training!" She declared, and Haruto matched her motions with his own. Michael chuckled.

"I didn't expect anything less," he told them, and the three of them settled down to the business of sparring together. Iris snapped the hilt, hitting the hidden button, and the blade itself unfolded. This was new technology, spurred on by various companies in the city, and Michael had given each of them one of these as a surprise present. It certainly made keeping these lessons secret from the rest of the family a lot easier.

She took the lead, approaching quickly, and striking. They didn't often work with live steel first, but Michael's point of view on the matter was that one, they needed to use it as often as possible, and two, they needed to be careful. Using wooden or foam bats wouldn't teach caution. He knew how to take care of virtually any injury they could inflict on each other, and after five years of learning, they both knew how not to hurt the other. Michael promised that they would be able to hurt other people if the time ever came.

Iris wasn't so sure if she wanted that, but she also knew the first lesson he'd taught her - never to pick up a weapon of any kind, be it a sword or a duel disk, unless you were both willing and capable of using it. The Numbers War was long over, but who knew when something else might happen and she might be one of those called to arms. Better to be ready and never need it, than need it and not be able to do anything. Ryouga and Rio absolutely agreed on that, at least.

So she sparred and she learned, and Haruto fought her with all of his strength. She pushed back, struck down carefully, judging her strength and where she aimed, and pushed him back. He twisted his blade, making an attempt to disarm her, and she stepped back, getting out of the clinch and taking a different angle for her counterattack. As time ticked by, Iris could not contain the pure joy that came from being able to do this at all.

She remembered her life in the past very clearly, and how she'd died. She might not want to attack other people, but she would always want to be able to defend herself. That was one of the reasons her clothes were specially made to be just shy of being actual armor. Ryouga had insisted on that after they'd all come back from the trip to the Astral-Barian World. She'd never been there, but she kind of wanted to, one of these days.

Metal clattered against metal, ringing loudly, but they could still hear Michael's firm voice instructing them on what to do. Eventually he called a halt - both of them dripped sweat, and Iris wanted something to drink. She slipped her sword's blade back into the hilt and started to turn around for the exit.

In the exit there stood Ryouga. No, not Ryouga - Nasch. Her king. His eyes stern and his lips not smiling at all. Iris swallowed and essayed a smile of her own.

"This isn't a movie," he said quietly. "This is very much not a movie."

"I know." Iris agreed. It wasn't as if she could argue that. She would keep the secret, but he clearly already knew it. She'd never been able to argue with him when he looked at her like that. She worried at her lip, then mentally shrugged. "It's just extra lessons, that's all."

Nasch nodded faintly. "How long have you been doing this?"

"A while now," she answered. Neither Haruto or Michael said anything else. She suspected Michael was a little annoyed, if only because Nasch had entered without - she guessed - asking permission.

"I can guess." He crossed his arms, regarding her thoughtfully. "Have you been hurt?"

"Nothing bad." Iris shrugged. "I can hold my own. We're good at this."

His eyes softened ever so lightly and she began to breathe easily. Or at least easier. "I noticed. Did you relay think I believed you were going to the movies? That you like them that much?"

Iris ducked her head. "I hoped?" Didn't most teenagers go to movies with friends? She didn't think she was that out of touch. Sure, she didn't have that many friends at school she could open up to, but she'd heard them all talking about movies and going on dates. She did like movies, but going to see them every week just seemed boring. She would have far preferred going to the ocean or up to the mountains. The few times she'd hung out with Yamikawa at the Duel Lodge had been very instructive.

"I think it's going to be a couple of weeks before you do this again," he told her quietly. "And if you want to do it again, then I want to know about it before you go. Understand?"

"Got it." Iris knew she was getting off easy. Ryouga nodded slightly before he looked at Haruto. "Kaito's probably going to say the same thing to you."

"Kaito-sama already knows," Omoid piped up. "I told him after their firsts unofficial lesson."

Haruto blinked. "I thought I reprogrammed you so you wouldn't do that."

"You did." Kaito stepped up next to Nasch. "I reprogrammed him back."

Iris could see the pride in Kaito's eyes regardless of his words. Whatever else he felt, he was glad Haruto could do these things. If Kaito had really objected, then they would have known it long before this.

Ryouga gestured to her, and she started over. She knew that she wasn't going to be seriously grounded - he'd let up on the punishments and let her make her own mistakes for a while now. He wouldn't be that upset about extra lessons. If anything, what had to have upset him was that she'd not told him the truth. He'd get over it.

Just to prove it, she glanced over to Michael and to Haruto. "I'll see you next week," she addressed Michael first, then Haruto. "Tomorrow?"

"Sure," Haruto agreed calmly, with Michael nodded. He was clearly having trouble keeping himself from laughing. Kaito and Ryouga both snorted, but Iris knew what they sounded like when they were upset, and this wasn't it. Everything was fine.

Together they all headed out. Iris couldn't have been more satisfied with what happened. She'd had a great workout and she didn't have to hide her extra trips from the others anymore. She'd more or less wanted to tell them from the beginning; events just hadn't fallen out that way. Being older did come with some advantages.

Ryouga still made her wear her helmet on the way home.

Notes: One day I might write more about Omoid and Haruto. You really think Kaito wouldn’t have one of those little bots assigned to keep an eye on his brother?

Ryouga was probably a lot angrier than he let on, but Iris is eighteen. She can make her own decisions, and Rio probably lectured him on that. Maybe I will write that side piece eventually.

Day 1: 3rd of August (Monday) Who are you? What’s your Zexal story?

hi, you can call me shif. Already made this introduction last year but figured could give it another go..! I’m a tumblr old and old in general. I like video games and YGO and lots of other things you can find if you browse my tumblr guess?

was not sure when I started watching Zexal but I found a clue this year and it was... somewhere around 2015-2016? Only started actively participating in the fandom in 2017-2018 though. Zexal is my favorite Yugioh spinoff by far and I got introduced to it thanks to already being fan of the franchise (since DM in early 2000s)

ever since, I’ve been active in discussions and producing content for Zexal even though the fandom eventually “died” out and people moved onto other things. This year have been a very Zexal year for me because, thanks to all the irl events, I had more time to dedicate to my creativity, going back to drawing more often and coming up with lots of headcanons for this series.. you could say I’ve been having my own personal Zexal months since mid-March lol, it’s been a lot of fun and I don’t intend to stop anytime soon

Zexal became one of those things that I will always go back to, no matter how long time passes, because it is entertaining, light, fun with also a pinch of suspense, angst and a bit of messed up things that I love

been participating in Zexal Month since 2018! It’s been a lot of fun and hope I can do all days or at least, will try! (You can check out my past Zexal Month stuff here)

Hello all of you lovelies! ^^

For the second year Zexal Month will be hosted by only myself ( @wendymoto ). @yaminoamber has a big big work commitment IN FRANCE CAN YOU BELIEVE IT. Our lovely Amber will be ascended into French territory and won’t be back until December. She’ll have bits and pieces of internet, but work comes first! So please send Amber your wishes and luck. <3

Before I start the information, I would just like to mention that with each week, I will be holding a ‘Content Creator’s Showcase’. Information on how this works and how to ‘enter’ will be posted separately from this information post. Stay tuned!

For the moment we’ve all been waiting for, the ZEXAL MONTH INFORMATION.

This year I wanted to do things a bit differently to allow a lot more creative subjects. and because of this, weeks might look messy. Nevertheless I will learn from it if things don’t go as planned or if anyone has any concerns or ideas for next year, feel free to message me.

How you choose to contribute is entirely up to you.

For example, you could gif, draw, write, edit etc. The options are endless. Participating every day is not required!

Anyone who has thought of other characters as the Barian/Astral race, it’s your time to shine! You can use your imagination to experiment with design ideas, backstories, duels, scenes, headcanons and more.

Any other card game crossovers with ZEXAL that you would love to show off. This day is for you!

Monday:

OC/Fan Character Day!

Feel free to do anything with your OCs on this day! Show and explain them. Draw them in an outfit, tell us what they do, what decks they use or if they do not duel. Anything goes with OC’s today!

Tuesday:

Self Insert Day.

This day is mostly an experiment for Zexal Month. I’ve recently seen plenty of fandom’s do these kind of things, so if you like the idea of this day, post as much as you like. Make it successful and I shall bring it back in coming years

If you’re looking for examples, you could write yourself talking to your favourite character about a certain thing. Maybe about another show/anime. Maybe yourself geeking out with Astral over Esper Robin/The Sparrow. Or just a drawing of yourself with your fav character.

Wednesday:

Different Protag Day. What do you think would have happened if somehow Yuma’s protag status was switched to someone else?

Any minor characters you think would be great as a Yu-Gi-Oh! protagonist. Writing, drawing, gifs, headcanons, etc.

Thursday:

Since it is Tasuku Hatanaka’s birthday today (HAPPY BIRTHDAY TASUKU HATANAKA.), on this lovely Thursday will be a tribute to anything and everything Yuuma.

Possibilities are endless with this one. Yuuma is in everything, shipping, AUs etc. Go for it. Favourite moments, things Yuuma inspired you about, Yuuma videos, fanfics, art and AU’s. Or if you would like to share any in real life Kattobingu life moments. Nows your chance!

Friday:

Wishes that you wanted to happen.

Things that you wish had happened that you would have loved that would have been great in canon.

A challenge is waiting for you all. I challenge you to not think about shipping and ships with this one. As much as the majority of you ship just about anything and the kitchen sink in ZEXAL, what things would be great in canon that doesn’t include shipping. For example, Yuuma’s parents being able to go back home and be with their family again.

Monday 21st - Sunday 27th

Monday:

One True Pairing (OTP) Day.

SPREAD YOUR OTPS ALL OVER THE PLACE. SHOW THE WORLD YOUR LOVE FOR PAIRINGS IN ZEXAL. SPREAD THEIR LEGS. (Stupid joke Wendy, stupid joke. But yet I still laughed at myself.)

Tuesday:

If a ship was canon, how would it go?

Create all of your headcanons, imaginations, feels, into posts for the fandom to see!

Disclaimer: Dub and Sub day are experimental days. If you like them, make them successful.

Wednesday:

ZEXAL DUB DAY (All dubs, English, German, Italian etc.)

For anyone who loves these dubs, feel free to gif or write anything to do with these dubs. I myself have posted some English dub gifs in the past.

A challenge to anyone who doesn’t really like it, to write ONE or more things that they do like about it. Whether it be a certain voice, a few lines or the fact that they kept Yuuma’s full name.

Thursday:

SUB DAY: (Anything subtitled related.)

Today is more like an appreciation for the original ZEXAL subtitled. E.g. Redrawing a scene/cap into your style.

If you did not participate last year, or you don’t really know what to do for today, you can use the information from Week 1 last year and put them all in a post.

Friday:

Palette day’s. Today and Monday.

Use this palette I created to create any artwork that you would like to do. If you want, you can mix any of the days up with this palette, such as, using the sub day to create art of your favourite characters using the palette here. Or mix it up with the next day as well. I hope you guys like the colours I chose too. Also I would like to thank @metalgeartachyon for helping me with good palette colours. Love you miz miz. :)

Zexal Month Day 10 (Unanswered Mystery) - The Day Mom Left

Notes: Zexal is better than some Yugioh series at not having plot holes but one massive plot hole that really upsets me is Tsukumo Mirai! So this fic takes place after Tsukumo Kazuma and Byron Arclight fell into the portal that would lead Kazuma to Astral World.

Tsukumo Mirai had her bags all packed and towards the doorway. A feisty Tsukumo Akari

stood in the doorway with a disapproving glare. For a second Mirai felt her heart falter like it wanted to break but she bit her lip and strengthened her resolve. She continued walking until she was side-by-side with her daughter. She stared into her eyes and had trouble finding the right words to say to her.

Sharp-tongue Akari didn't though as she lashed out, “For the last time, you have to know how stupid this is mom. Yeah it sucks that dad disappeared but it is going to suck even more if you disappear too. Yuma won't be able will take it! Neither will grandma. Please mom, reconsider.”

Mirai smile and shook her head, “Akari, you should know that first and foremost I always think about my family first. I have thought long and hard about how this will affect all of you. But me and Kazuma have raised our children to be strong. More so, we don't abandon each other. You know that if me, you, mom, or Yuma disappeared that Kazuma wouldn't waste a second thinking about what to do. He would rush off to save us right away. That is the kind of man he is and the example he tried to set for the whole family. I alone have unique knowledge that may be able to save your father. I can't let it go to waste. I need to go searching for him.”

Akari was doing her best to hold back tears. She knew her mom was right but it upset her so much. She was shaking with anger and for a moment it seemed like Akari was going to shout or even get violent with her own mother but instead she just wrapped her arms around her mom in a much needed hug.

Akari mumbled, “Just do your best to come back to us. Dad is very lucky to have such a good wife.”

Mirai nodded and called upstairs, “Yuma! It is time for me to go. Please come here.”

Young Tsukumo Yuma came down the stairs. He didn't quite understand the details yet, just that mommy had to a take a trip for some time. He already missed his dad so much, he didn't want his mom to leave too.

Mirai hugged him as she said, “Now Yuma, remember to grow up to become a strong and loving boy while I am gone. I already foresee that people will try to tell you that your kindness is a weakness but don't be fooled, it is your greatest strength.”

Yuma looked up into her eyes and silently nodded in acknowledgment.

Mirai continued, “Most of all the one thing you absolutely can never forget is to do what your dad would do when things get tough.”

Yuma's eyes lit up as he proudly declared, “I will do the Kattobingu!”

Mirai gave the widest grin as she said, “That's right. Kazuma would love to hear you say that. He will hear you say that again. Even though I am going away for now we will always be one happy family as long we believe in the spirit of Kattobingu.”

Akari nodded as she proudly declared, “Don't worry mom! I'll take care of the family while you are gone. You can count on me. Just bring dad home... please.”

With that Mirai left the Tsukumo household for the last time in years. She would come to be successful in finding a way to reach Kazuma in Astral World but unfortunately now a way back to Earth. Together they survived in Astral World together until their son came to reunite them.
