Hob saved Napoleon’s life (on accident) during a battle, so he unfortunately got invited, and one can’t not turn down an invitation from the emperor.

He’s in pictures from suffragette rallies (because obviously he supports women’s rights, Eleanor would haunt him if he didn’t), paintings of audiences at the Globe (he was curious, okay?), he’s almost out of frame in the famous VJ Day in Times Square picture, he’s one of the men in that picture of workers sitting on a beam above a skyscraper.

He is the unluckiest immortal in history; though he tries so hard to stay on the down low and out of historical events, he somehow gets caught up in them all the time. Really, the only reason he hasn’t been caught is because the photos are bad quality or the artist took just enough liberty (thanks to him basically being a pedestrian passing through) that his facial features are vague in portraits.

(I have an idea that’s been rumbling around in my noggin where you’re Hob’s TA and, since he’s a history professor, you start seeing this patterns during research for his lectures or fact-checking. Cue a very awkward confrontation where you simultaneously need to know answers/want to assure him that his secret is safe with you.)

When I was in 3rd grade I was in this special “gifted” history class that they pulled you out for like resource room, but for kids who weren’t being challenged by the history curriculum. It was an experimental program it only lasted one year but the teacher was this WWII veteran who was the scariest person I’d ever met outside of church he was very stern and always yelled at my for holding my pencil wrong, and then I’d start crying, and then he’d yell at me for crying. But I remember we learned about the JFK assassination in his class and he SHOWED US THE ZAPRUDER TAPE FRAME BY FRAME and in long detail he explained to us (while rewinding and revisiting the headshot frames) how the way his head explodes makes it impossible for the bullet to have come from where Oswald was and this was like… 4-6 months after 9/11 where we all watched thousands of people die on live tv so we were kind of numb to the imagery but it was a full hour of going over and over the headshot while the teacher ranted about conspiracy and I remember I was like 8 or 9 and I was just like “wow I have seen a lot of people die for real is this what growing up is like? You just see people die all the time? Is this why adults watch the news” and like in retrospect what the hell did he think showing us an hour of headshot footage was an appropriate way to spend an hour with a group of recently traumatized 3rd graders but thinking of all the times I was shown gore as a kid especially war gore or Christian martyr gore maybe that’s why I kind of don’t see it as a big deal?
