Keiko Yumi
"Woah, is this Keiko Yumi? The Keiko Yumi who made that killer manga, Red of the Ambitious?! Dude, that manga, by far, is one of the best isekais I've ever read! It gets a little tame in the beginning, but later on after the first few chapters, it starts to pick up. I really enjoyed it when the main character discovered the power of the world he was in! Seeing the OC become OP always gets me hyped! I'm eagerly awaiting the next chapter of the series!"
"Besides that, I don't know too much about Keiko. We attend some classes together, but she seems very prim and proper. Like, she only cares about her studies and stuff. I kinda admire that in a person. ...I also heard that she and her mom apparently have issues. Apparently, Keiko doesn't agree with her mom's lifestyle, and for that, she's cut off all contact with her. I hope that the two of them make up someday."

"Criss! Oh man, she is a joy to hang around with! She always leads me on the most exciting and dangerous adventures! I remember once we ventured to the Himuro Mansion here in Tokyo, and... well, let me just say, if you're thinking of staying the night in that place, don't. "Holy crap. Nikki "1-Up" Yoshie! Dude, I've seen so many of her videos online of her trouncing her opponents, it's not even funny! I read about how her old team got rid of her after they lost the championship. Peh, if you ask me, she's better off without those losers, anyway! I can't even recall their team name now that I mention it. But whatever! Like I said, she's better off on her own! But man, I had no idea she was joining the D.R.B. That's awesome! I wonder if I ask will she give me her autograph..."

They're a hell of a lot better than the other one. ...But I'm kind of hoping they lose. Why? Because that means Pixel Syndicate will advance, which means they'll be facing us. ...And I'm definitely looking forward to it!"

Otaku Corps Home Aesthetic
— Keiko Yumi
Keiko lives in a dorm room in Chiyoda City in Akihabara where she can head to class at Tokyo University. Though she doesn't mind rooming with anyone, she asked to be in a dorm room by herself where she can study and draw in peace (and also speak to her superiors at Chuohku without anyone knowing). She used to live with her grandparents, but after one particular fight with her grandmother, she decided to move on campus.

Criss lives with her grandparents in an old-timey house in Chiyoda in Akihabara. She's spent the majority of her life in this house, after being adopted by her grandparents after her parents went missing. Though she is happy to call this house home, she is rarely there, or in the city for that matter. She is usually only at home during test/exam days or special occasions. Any other time, this wayward young girl can be found in every other city in Japan, exploring her young heart out. Her room is filled with priceless artifacts that either her parents sent to her, or that she found or bought herself during her adventures.

Her house is one of the largest apartments in the building, as she personally requested the largest one that had plenty of rooms. As a lover of video games and technology, her apartment is filled with the latest in smart technology. She rarely leaves her adobe, unless it is for a video game convention, a D.R.B. event, or to head to her local arcade. Though she has enough money to pay for rent by herself, her parents take care of much of her payments for her.

- shinsuke is the middle child of three children. his older sister, mei, is significantly older than her brothers, being fifteen years older than shinsuke. in comparison, shinsuke’s younger brother, yori, is four years younger than him.
- shinsuke’s family when he was growing up was a little bit... broken up in places - or rather, circumstancially distant. mei moved out of the house at the age of eighteen, when she graduated highschool. after one failed semester at a university in tokyo, she moved abroad, following her rather wild and adventurous nature wherever the wind would take her. shinsuke was only three at the time, and yori wouldn’t be born for another year.
- when yori was born, shinsuke took his older brother role rather seriously - perhaps a little too seriously? already an old soul trapped in a body younger than his years, shinsuke cared deeply about his little brother, but struggled to follow him into his games and play. he did, however, always encourage yori’s precocious creative side. years later, yori would credit his older brother for his successful career in the arts.
- when shinsuke started middle school, he moved into his grandmother’s house, which was much closer to the school than his parents’. he and yumie had always gotten along splendidly, and shinsuke had virtually no objection to the matter.
- when shinsuke turned thirteen, his father received a promotion at work, and a proposal that was difficult to refuse. however, this new job would require him, and his family, to move to korea. concerns arose because of shinsuke who, since he was a little boy, had always shown some resistance and anxiety to drastic changes. after length discussions among the family members, it was decided that yumie (who didn’t want to leave japan) would take care of shinsuke until he graduates from highschool. he permanently moved in with his grandmother, and his parents and yori moved to korea. incidentally, mei joined them a few months later. the kita family was thus split between korea and japan, with yumie and shinsuke being the only ones left in hyôgo.
- as a result, shinsuke only... distantly knows his siblings, really. he did not grow up with them, and they did not grow up with him. they did videocall regularly when shinsuke was in middle and highschool, and messaged each other regularly - mei even travelled to japan regularly in a bid to visit her brother and grandmother, and they all get along well, but when shinsuke looks at the miya twins? he can see the difference.
- shinsuke and his grandmother are very close. she essentially raised him, and he refuses to consider a future where he does not take care of her in her old age. in some ways, they are best friends - they have been a team for too long for it to change now.
- yumie lives on the farm with shinsuke. she lives in a small guest house near the main house so that she can retain her independence and shinsuke can enjoy his as a young adult. yumie is very independent and knows pretty much everyone in the village (arguably she is even more popular than shinsuke is).
- when yori graduated from highschool, he came to hyôgo to spend a few months on the farm while figuring out what he wanted to do with his life. this gave him and his brother the opportunity to reconnect, and they have remained quite close since. after leaving the farm, yori moved to tokyo and eventually became a successful music composer in the film and tv industry.
- the first and only time shinsuke left japan was to visit mei in thailand, where she moved after getting restless in korea. he spent a few weeks there, and felt like he was finally getting to know his older sister, and vice versa. to this day, they call each other every week, and mei visits once a year. as of 2022, she is a professional diving instructor and happily married. the last time sh called shinsuke was to tell him he would, before the end of the year, become an uncle.

Cerys Rose (Crimson General)
Four-star general of the Classic Order, crimson-haired and in her mid 20s, in charge of the new Superfortress Kilo in Japan, and commands a powerful army to take on Warlord-level threats. She has been taught by her higher general Steelside in the art of heavy to super heavy armor units and advanced defensive weapons, while utilizing her own complex attack tactics and special weaponry.
In the face of immense heat, she is a young woman unfazed by it all, and accomplishes her goals at all costs.
Eddy Borisov (Relentless Colonel)
A powerful, super highly-trained colonel that fights alongside General Rose. An expert in covert operations and one of America's greatest heroes, he is regarded as a one-man army that can take on hordes of the Desolation, while defeating some of its Elites. A 15-year old boy, Tyrannosaurus-level threat and top graduate of the Desolation Academy in Paris, France. He has hurt the brightest superstar, destroyed towns and villages, eliminated armies of the Classic Order, and eliminated supersoldiers. A cocky combatant willing to back up his speech, he utilizes lightning and classic weaponry to eliminate his foes.
Chinatsu Okita (The Black Striker)
A 20-year old young woman, also Tyrannosaurus-level threat who graduated from the Desolation Academy in Tokyo, she hails from a long line of villains who worked for the Desolation. However, the Eradicator had obliterated them all, and all that was left of the Okita clan was Chinatsu herself. Even with the support of her girlfriend, it was all that she had left, rendering her into a cold, emotionless nature.
She can summon any weapon but made of enhanced obsidian after seeing it once, and is gifted enough to master all of them in a very short time. Chinatsu is deadly in both close, medium and long range, while fast and powerful.
Yumi Muramoto (Brightest Superfan)
A 15-year old girl, of blonde pigtails and a cutesy appearance. For the longest time, she has been the biggest fan of Fumiko Arai in her idol days, buying the most expensive package every time, attending all of her shows throughout the country, and meeting her many times, even becoming good friends with the superstar. All of her experiences being around Fumiko has left her at her happiest and most cheerful. However, on the day where Fumiko's voice was lost and broke down on stage, Yumi's heart broke into a trillion pieces.
To honor her time as an idol, Yumi started her own idol group of 6 in her school, known as arisen! Despite being a first-year, she had unwavering determination to succeed, with the great inspiration of Fumiko Arai herself by her side..

First Japanese film with trans lead confirmed for 2021 release
I translated a piece of news that I thought might be of interest to you my friends! The Japanese original with pics is in the source.
Katasode no sakana (’fish in one sleeve’, tentative title) is set to become the first Japanese film with a trans woman lead played by a trans actor. Fashion model Ishizuka Yuu has been cast in the leading role.
The film will be based on the poem Katasode no sakana by Fuzuki Yumi, included in her poetry collection Watashitachi no neko (’our cat’). An acclaimed poet and essayist, Fuzuki was awarded the Gendaishi Techou Prize when she was 16 years old before becoming the youngest recipient of the Nakahara Chuuya Prize at 18.
Shouji Tsuyoshi is set to direct. Shouji received the special jury prize at the fourth Tokyo International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival in 1995 and has since released independent films such as Old Narcissus, Homosocial Dance, and Kaerimichi to international and domestic acclaim.
Auditions were held to cast trans actors for the roles of the main character and her friends. Fashion model Ishizuka Yuu was chosen among many hopefuls for the role of Hikari. Ishizuka has appeared in music videos as well as on tv and on the radio, sharing her experiences and views.
Ishizuka comments on her first acting role, “Trying something new is always scary, but I’m enjoying the process of throwing myself into acting, creating something by what I do and do not possess. Please stay tuned.”
Hikari’s friend Chiaki will be played by up-and-coming trans actress and media personality Hirohata Rika.
Meanwhile, Igari Tomoka will star as Hikari’s coworker.
Fuzuki comments, “This is a very important film. It’s going to be a huge adventure for myself, the director, Ishizuka Yuu-san, and everyone involved. It’s such a blessing. I feel like a fingerling still, but I hope everyone will kindly support the project until the release date.”
Filming wrapping up in 2020, Katasode no sakana is coming to cinemas in 2021.

My Review of Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation
How did I get into this anime? I felt it necessary to push watching this series into the high priority category instead of waiting for fate to take the wheel in the randomizer. Because of the fall anime lineup for 2021, I thought I could breeze through the first 11 episodes and get prepared for the second season. I did it and I don’t regret it!
A 34 year old shut-in is out of the house for the first time in forever. And he’s immediately hit by a truck.
Oh Truck-kun, you always show up at the first episode of Isekai animes to spice things up.
This man then wakes up as a baby in another world to parents Paul and Zenith. We’re not sure what the man’s name was in his prior life, but he will now be known as Rudeus (or Rudy). His 34 year old mind is in the body of this child. And this new world Rudeus is in is heavily focused on magic and swords. In the first 5 years as Rudeus, he managed to become well equipped with learning magic incantations, even out-doing his own teacher, Roxy. In his downtime, he ends up making friends with a cute, green-haired girl named Sylph. And when he’s sent away for training, he meets his cousin Eris and becomes her tutor. Rudeus’s days are filled with the unexpected moments and whimsy compared to his old life in modern-day Japan.
While the story seems to be in a lull watching Rudeus grow episode to episode, the normal stuff indicating it’s a real Isekai doesn’t come until a little later. For now, embrace Rudeus taking small steps in his new life in this new world. He was tormented in high school, so having an episode where he leaves his parents property was quite the watch. So let’s take a journey into Rudeus’s life.
BETWEEN THE SUB AND DUB: I watched the entire first part dubbed and I gotta say, FUNimation did a bang-up job with this one. I was blown away when I found out that the dude who voiced Paul, this is like his first big role. Good job on voicing a questionable character! And as for the sub, I always have a kick whenever Sugita is voicing someone who can be cheeky at times. Good times by all! Here’s what you might recognize these folks from.

DISLIKED CHARACTER: Throughout the first season, I think we all went through a passing fancy of hating on either Paul or Eris! Some say Paul is a two-timing scumbag who cheated on his wife with the maid. And then Eris, I think it was her temper in her debut episodes that was a drawback. But we moved on!
Come season two, I wasn’t expecting to see this nothing prince from season one come back. Fuck was his name, Pax!? We would see him every now and then when we got an update on Roxy because she was tutoring him at the time. We thought nothing about this twat and moved on. He has an unhealthy lust for Roxy, his teacher and will stop at nothing to catch her, keep her, and force her to make babies with him. NOPE! NAH-AH! FUCK THIS TURD! Let’s just say I wasn’t pleased with his actions when he takes advantage of Rudeus, Lilia, and Aisha just to get Roxy.
SHIPPING: Before I talk about Rudeus in this portion, I think I must talk about a certain character that needs to be thwap’d with the no horny bat and thrown in horny jail.
PAUL! Dude, the fuck?! Bruh! I was this close, THIS FUCKING CLOSE, to commending you on being a top-notch husband and father. I mean, father yes he’s okay. But husband, the cheers from your bedroom say it all. But cheating on Zenith with your live-in maid? And knocking up both girls at the same time! What ever respect I had for this guy just plummeted to a level not discovered by any geologist!
Okay, let’s talk about Rudeus. It’s pretty clear in his former life, he had no kind of relationship, much less any interaction with females. He spent his days in bed whacking it San Diego style! In the first season, Rudeus has had some moments with three different girls (Sylph, Roxy, and Eris). Romantic wise is something that’s going to have to wait. Rudeus’s mind is that of a 34 year old shut-in, but depending on what episode you’re on he’s only a child.
With that said, Sylph has the better advantage than everyone else (at first). Rudeus is working in a home for five years in order to pay magic school tuition for not just him but for Sylph as well. I didn’t see him attempt that for Roxy. No, he just stole her panties and calls it a holy relic. And as for Eris, pfft, I doubt he’d even pay for a cup of water for Eris, let alone school tuition! Plus, aren’t they second cousins or something? They’re blood related. That’s more than enough reason to tank that ship in normal times. This anime, Eris’s father was A-OK with allowing his daughter to be felt up by Rudy.
*sighs* Everybody in this world has a healthy libido, but with an unhealthy sexual mentality.
Maybe the second season will ease up on the…
Or we’ll see a fucking orgy in the second episode! That Lize sure gets around and Roxy is not satisfied one bit about that.
Now when it came to the second season and shipping with Rudeus things got a little hot and heavy between him and Eris! I know they’re cousins, but…no, I can’t finish that statement without my logical mind coming into play. If they have a baby, that baby is just going to be a potato.
ENDING TO PART ONE: Things began to change once Rudeus turned 10. First of all, 10 years is a cornerstone age for people in this world so a big party was in order. Just not to the lengths of Eris’s party was due to family drama in one part of the Greyrat family. And surprisingly, it’s not Paul’s fault. And now comes the moment where everyone’s lives change and the story makes a complete 180º.
A giant mana disaster strikes! In that moment, Rudeus and Eris are transported to another continent. But before that, it’s time for Rudeus to have an out of body experience in his old body (doesn’t make sense what I just said, just go with it) and meet his maker. Rudeus meets a Man-God. A very femme Man-God! This new continent the kids were transported to is actually where Roxy was originally from. The two wound up traveling with a new mate named Ruijerd. Ruijerd was one of those people everyone was taught to be feared due to his green hair and mark on the forehead. But he hopes to one day rid the world of this prejudice and bullshit that’s been falsifying the Supard race for eons.
Now these final two episodes of the first half are kind of the start of Rudeus, Eris, and Ruijerd’s adventure party as “Dead End”. So we’re finally at that point of the story where the hero becomes an adventurer in the isekai! At the beginning, Rudeus learned that his strategies weren’t always going to work. He had to crawl his way up from being an F-ranked group and not wait to attack when lives are on the line. And when he was caught by a corrupt guild member doing things not the right way, he was going to get in big trouble.
That was until Ruijerd came in and threatened the guy’s life and also blowing his cover being a superd. It was after that moment, Ruijerd decided to shave his head so no one could fear his green hair and cover his forehead. Rudeus, Eris, and Ruijerd as the group Dead End are going to continue their journey across the continent and return Eris home to her family.
Oh and one other big thing happened in the final episode. The big mana disaster hit more than just the mansion containing Rudy, Eris, and the rest. It hit Rudeus’s hometown as well. It’s unknown how Sylph is. Rudeus’s mother Zenith is missing. Lillia and Aisha are missing as well. Paul is somehow okay with his daughter Norn (the daughter he had with Zenith). But he’s calling on anyone, even his old adventurer comrades to help him find his family. And by chance, Roxy happened to be in town at the exact same time as two of Paul’s old teammates. So they’re going on a journey together.
PART TWO: It’s been a year or so since Rudeus started Dead End and the group has been gaining traction across the land. Ruijerd and Eris have been getting a cool reputation and Rudeus…eh, not so much. Not that many people even get his name right! At the beginning of this arc, both Rudeus and Roxy happened to be in the exact same town. They never once ran into each other.
Also, remember that femme Man-God that I mentioned in the first part finale? He returns to Rudeus’s subconscious one night telling him to go down some alley. I mean, last time he wound up with Ruijerd as an ally, so what harm could following this guy do? Hahaha, foreshadowing! Anyways, Rudeus follows that path and runs into a great demon emperor named Kishirika Kishirisu. And I swear any time she’s on screen, the animators got people from Studio Trigger to animate her. She grants Rudeus a foresight eye after saving her from starvation. This new power would prove useful for Rudeus when dealing with oncoming attacks.
While Rudeus wasn’t able to meet up with Roxy (as both were in town at the same time), he was able to run into his old man Paul a few episodes later. Their reunion was a less than stellar one as the two did indeed took blows to the head from the other. But Rudeus’s plans do change a bit as he puts finding his missing friends and family members at the top of the list. He was even able to meet his other younger sister, Aisha and saved her and her mother Lilia. Fortune is favoring young Rudeus.
END OF PART TWO: So the group ran into a snag. Rudeus ends up meeting a Dragon-God, one of the most powerful beings in the world. Usually, people tremble in fear when this guy comes through. Not Rudeus though, I think it had to do with him being reborn from another world. And it didn’t get any better from here as the Dragon-God Orsted learned that Rudeus has been in contact with that Man-God. The Man-God has been kinda…I don’t want to say untrustworthy, but I would rather trust Kyubey with a contract than this guy any day. So Rudeus and his team almost died. But was spared once more! It’s just that Rudeus talking to a Man-God has kinda gotten out to Ruijerd. And Rudeus felt a little guilty because it was only because of the Man-God that he put his faith in Ruijerd. Luckily, Ruijerd doesn’t see it that way. He feels it’s his duty to protect the children.
After a long journey, the trio made their way back to Rudeus and Eris’s home continent. And this is where Ruijerd parts ways with the children. When they made it back to Eris’s home, they learn a few things. Zenith (Rudeus’s mother) is still missing. Sylph has been found safe. Ghislaine is alive and well. Eris’s parents were murdered on another continent. Eris’s grandfather was executed on the speculation of starting the big mana disaster. And the remaining butler to Eris’s home says that if Eris were to return she must become a concubine to the local lord as to not fuck up things with the family any further. Eris had a lot to take in today so what will be her next move?
She and Rudeus have sex.
And then she left him.
She hit it and quit it!
This left Rudeus in quite a state of shock. He sunk into a deep depression, much like when he became a shut-in during his previous life. No matter how many years have passed since then, Rudeus will never shake those horrific memories and they just trapped him. Aside from Rudeus sinking into self depression, there seems to be activity all across the board with all of the other characters.
Ruijerd is making progress by himself as no one on the continent is really scared of him because of the superd race. Eris and Ghislaine are traveling and we learn Eris truly loves Rudeus. Paul is reunited with Lilia and Aisha. And Roxy has an encounter with the strange being Rudeus met at the beginning of part two, Kishirika Kishirisu. Roxy did a nice thing for her and got rewarded with learning the locations of people she was searching for. Rudeus is okay, as is Paul and most of the family. Zenith however is unknown! There’s an approximation on the location it’s just too dark to tell. And Zenith might be the key to unlocking Rudeus’s depression.
As I recall in the first part, Rudeus was quite close to his mother Zenith. At least closer to her than he was to Paul! Given the choice between the two of them, I’d be a mama’s boy too. Rudeus recalls a memory of Zenith and that seemed to trigger him to get up and leave his tent to find Zenith, his mother. Rudeus goes alone on a journey.
…Oh and Sylph is…
END OF SEASON, DON’T KNOW WHEN WE’LL BE BACK!
Damn, this anime was addicting. There’s so much to say and yet I feel like I can’t say everything I want to because I feel like I’d be leaving out something crucial.
First of all, the animation was spectacular. And it’ll blow your socks off to know that this is the only anime under the belt of newly formed Studio Bind. No shit! The only animes this studio has done is this and only this. This is a success story! And everyone in that studio deserves a round of applause, a three month vacation, a legitimate massage, and the world’s best sake to drink. Did they seriously get animators that defected from other studios like Madhouse, KyoAni, and JC Staff?
Next I would like to talk about the characters. It was hard to stay mad at any main cast member no matter what Twitter says. Not that I give a shit about what Twitter says. Yes, we all know about Rudeus’s shut-in life and yes it is a little creepy that this little baby has the mind of a 34 year old NEET from modern Japan. But the point of this anime is second chances at life! Yes, Rudeus has a lot of perverted moments. A LOT! He still has those panties that once belonged to Roxy. Honestly, at least he’s not stealing underwear from every woman he meets like Happosai in Ranma ½. He was able to explore new things and sort of step out of the shadows of his past life. Now he doesn’t just leave that behind. His past constantly comes back to haunt him, especially when something traumatic hits him.
But sure Twitter, go on and be like “Durr, that baby has underwear on his head #CancelRudeus”!
Another character who made a significant change would be Eris. If you would have told me after her debut episode that by the end of the series I was going to enjoy her presence, I would have spit Ginger Ale in your face and laugh. Seriously, she was just some crazy-bitch wildebeest with a short fuse. One attempted kidnapping later wiped that bitchiness off her face real quick! But it was fun to watch Eris grow throughout her journey with Ruijerd and Rudeus. She’s really become a lady…
I mean besides the fact she literally became one after having sex!
Even Paul I can’t hate that much! I will give him props for being a man and owning up to his major fuck-up. I didn’t think the two wives scenario would work for him but up until the great mana disaster, it was. He is scummy when it comes to women and booze, but he truly loves his family. Although I did want to punch him when he got into it with Rudeus! Seriously dude, your son went through hell up to this point and spoiler alert, he was only 10. He didn’t know that his hometown got wrecked. His priorities were to survive and bring Eris home safe. And besides it is kinda your fault that Rudeus couldn’t see you up to that point!
As for the story set-up, I can’t complain. I know a lot of folks were probably turned off by how slow things started out. I thought it was nice that we saw Rudeus’s progression and key points in his training before we got into the actual adventure. It’s boring to just watch someone a baby one minute and a full-fledged mage the next. Kudos for giving us a protagonist we watch grow and not just slap it on us like, BAM, he’s an over-powered freak like Lord Ains or Kirito!
Now I have to wonder what’s next. I’m wondering if the characters from Mushoku Tensei will get added to Isekai Quartet. But more important queries are if this show will get another season. I think that was cemented after the release of the OVA. A big fat “YA BOI”! We’re going to live to see the Erectile Dysfunction arc. Seriously, is that really what it’s called? I know my friend calls it that. Well, whatever! I’m down for more Mushoku Tensei. I give it a full-on recommendation for anyone into fantasy, action, ecchi, or if you’re just an Isekai fan.

I’ve seen Yumi-sensei’s manga quite a few times before, and I think she is an incredible artist. She’s also very charismatic, so I think she will be a good and confident leader for her division.
Criss Hiromi
Hiromi-san’s YouTube is very popular, so there are times when they pop up for me when I put on videos for background noise. Though I must apologize to Hiromi-san because after the first time, I got scared and have been skipping them ever since. . . You are far braver than I am.
Nikki Yoshie
Oh, I’ve seen her games on television before! I believe Ichiro introduced me to her a while back when we were at his place. Personally, I feel a sort of sense of empathy with her, considering the oppositions we’ve faced to get to where we are.
Otaku Corps
. . . I would be lying if I said I wasn’t envious. They are all very successful young ladies, and I think that that’s incredible, and I admire them. Of course there are times where I look at myself and wonder how much longer I have to work for my own break. As a division though, I believe they will represent Akihabara better than we could have, and I look forward to having the chance to face off with them.

I can’t say I know too much about her, I know she’s quite popular, but I also heard she got into university on a scholarship. That’s pretty impressive especially in the Tokyo area, so I think the amount of hard work that must’ve gone into achieving such a thing is admirable.
Criss Hiromi
I follow her. I like getting creeped out sometimes, staying awake at night just means more time to study, and we have tons of coffee. Plus she has a pet mouse, and anyone who takes good care of their pets can’t be too bad I guess.
Nikki Yoshie
Haruto watches her a lot. I’ve seen news reports and stuff, but I’m not at all familiar with the gaming world so I don’t know much about her. When we lived in Akihabara, I saw her on promos and heard her name all the time though.
Otaku Corps
Well they certainly represent the area far better than we do, so that’s good. Call me judgemental or whatever, but I also don’t get why an entire group of successful people would come together for something like this, but oh well, it’s not my place to wonder.

Oh yeah! Lots of my buddies read her manga! I think the setting and characters are super cool too! I don’t own any of the volumes, though I should probably buy some. Y’know, to show my support! Natsu likes to scare me with her videos. . . The dude KNOWS I get creeped out by ghost stories and he STILL shows them to me! But for Hiromi-chan, I like her sense of adventure. Maybe what she does creeps me out, but her attitude certainly doesn’t!

OH MY GOD! I have been following Toshie-san’s career for EVER! I’ve watched her since her national debut and she’s so COOL! I was really upset when she got thrown under the bus that one time, but I remain a loyal fan!

Persona Lite with Fire Emblem sprinkles on top
I’ve been addicted to Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore on my Switch for the past few weeks, and I’m getting close to wrapping it up. I figured it’s high time I talked about it a bit.
The game that would become Tokyo Mirage Sessions (TMS) was first announced as “Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem,” which is absolutely not a good way to describe what this became.
This title led so many people astray.
What comes to mind when you think of (mainline) Shin Megami Tensei games? An apocalyptic or post-apocalyptic setting. First-person-perspective battles. Negotiating with demons. Battles against deities. TMS contains a little bit of the third thing on that list, and none of the others.
What comes to mind when you think of Fire Emblem? Medieval-era settings. Permadeath (either optional or mandatory). RTS-style combat. The famed “weapon triangle.” Support conversations. TMS contains the fourth thing on that list, and none of the others.
But let’s be honest here: For most people (especially Westerners), the first thing you think of when you think about Shin Megami Tensei isn’t even the games with “Shin Megami Tensei” in the title. It’s the Persona series! They’ve grown far more popular than their parent franchise at this point.
So I suppose it was natural that TMS is, at its core, a “Persona Lite” game. The darker edges of Persona titles are removed in favor of something more T-friendly, but the basics are all there: A group of teenagers in modern-day Japan discover a strange alternate dimension that they can access which also gives them the ability to summon supernatural powers/entities. When people start to go missing in this other dimension, it falls to this group of teens to unite and save the day, ultimately leading to them discovering the reason why this alternate world has been bleeding into modern Japan in the first place and, in the end, saving humanity from annihilation. That’s totally how Persona works, and it’s also totally how Tokyo Mirage Sessions works!
However, instead of summoning Shin Megami Tensei demons as “Personas,” the heroes of TMS summon Fire Emblem characters that are “Mirages.” Each character is permanently linked to a single Mirage, so there are no “Wild Card” characters here. However, you can level the characters’ mirages up to make them take on new forms and new abilities. FE fans will notice that all of the characters here are from the Falchion/Tiki/Shadow Dragon stories - the two Marth adventures (Shadow Dragon/Mystery of the Emblem) and the semi-recent 3DS hit Awakening.
For some weird reason, all of the Fire Emblem “mirages” wear helmets, masks, or other face coverings 100% of the time. The only exception is Tiki.
The lack of the darker themes in many Persona games and the fact that there’s no “Wild Card” to manage is what makes this, in my opinion, more like PERSONA LITE. And then you get your Fire Emblem backup characters to serve as extra flavoring. The characters we meet from Fire Emblem are rarely the focus — you spend most of your time with the teen heroes — but they still manage to show off their unique personalities and carry in a load of FE fanservice. (The good kind of fanservice where it’s full of references and nods to the continuity of the series, I mean. Not the other kind where it’s softcore porn.)
Fire Emblem fanservice was one of the biggest delights for me here. If you’re looking for any SMT/Persona characters to pop up and link the continuity together, you can stop looking because they aren’t here. But if you want to see specific characters from the three source FE games pop up here, a metric ton manage to do so. For example: Tharja (from Awakening) creates two golems for training purposes, which she names Bord and Cord after the pair of heroes from Marth’s era. And then the actual spirits of Bord and Cord possess those golems. So naturally, they start bickering and fighting. It’s delightful.
So yeah, there’s plenty of nods for FE fans to appreciate even if your favorite characters are taking a back seat to a bunch of teenagers. Fire Emblem fans will recognize the heroic mirages, the enemy boss mirages, the weapon triangle weakness/strength system and lots of musical cues. On the flip side, Persona fans will recognize the story structure, the magic spells the characters wield (things like “Mazio” and “Diarama” and “Rakukaja”), the common enemies you encounter and cameos from a few of the more famous demons found on signage around Tokyo. Sadly, there are no familiar sounds or music pieces borrowed from SMT/Persona that I noticed.
In addition to the main story, there are also “Side Stories” for your party and side quests from various NPCs. The whole game lasts around 50 hours even if you aren’t trying to 100% it.
And while the music here is mostly pretty good — especially the Fire Emblem themes — I really wish we’d gotten some Persona-style tunes in here. Persona soundtracks are absolutely killer and everybody knows it. I wanted to hear some Shihoko Hirata, some Lotus Juice, some Yumi Kawamura, some Lyn Inaizumi. Alas, that never happens. Sad face.
In fact, as far as vocal tracks go, you’ll only be hearing the performances of the main characters. See, the story this time revolves around a group of teens who are hired by a talent agency to become young starlets of the stage and screen. You meet plenty of pop idols, a cooking show host, aspiring actors, and those who do combinations of the above. There’s a lot of focus on the Japanese entertainment industry, and it’s mostly a very positive portrayal about how hard teen stars work to reach their dreams and how fulfilling it can be when they express themselves through their artistic pursuits. Speaking as someone who legitimately does not care one iota about the idol industry in Japan or Asia as a whole, I’m very happy that these characters managed to remain likable and their pursuits stayed enjoyable throughout. No one here is an ultra-deep character, but no one here is a total cipher, either. I’m additionally thankful that the vocal songs are another highlight of the soundtrack alongside the FE tunes.
The last thing I’ll bring up is the “Sessions” mentioned in the title. It’s a battle mechanic wherein striking an enemy with a weapon or element they’re weak to will enable other characters to start jumping in with follow-up attacks. At first, it’s just one or two follow-ups, but by the game’s end, you might be sitting there for 15 or more consecutive strikes on an enemy after you initiate a “Session” of follow-ups. The greatest quality-of-life improvement built into this Switch port is that you can turn on “Quick Session” to make these attack animations much shorter and more rapid than they ever were in the Wii U original. I never had to play that one, but I can’t imagine I’d have much patience for constantly triggering 15 attack animations with every round. SO glad I don’t have to sit through that.
This is just a two-strike Sessions, so it won’t last long enough for you to take a beverage break.
So yeah, there’s a lot for RPG fans, Persona fans, and most of all, Fire Emblem fans to dig in “Tokyo Mirage Sessions.” And since we already covered that Danganronpa fans are apparently predisposed to enjoying Persona and Fire Emblem, that probably means that YOU, dear reader, are likely to dig this game as well.

New Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Anime Trailer Previews New Opening Theme For October's Second Part
The official website and Twitter account for the Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation TV anime adaptation has posted a new teaser trailer ahead of the October 3rd premiere for its second part. The new teaser can be seen below and features a preview of the new opening theme performed once again by Yuiko Ohara with the title Kenshō no Uta - 'Succession Song'.

Ahead of the series premiere on September 26th in Japan, Tokyo MX will broadcast a preview special featuring cast members Konomi Kohara, Yumi Uchiyama and Tomokazu Sugita where they will outline the second part of the series as well as feature comments from the rest of the cast and crew along with featuring another preview. Funimation streamed the first part of Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation back in January and describes it as such:
The story follows a 34-year-old man who is killed after trying to save someone from getting hit by a car. He soon finds himself reincarnated in a magical world as Rudeus Greyrat, except that he gets his whole life reset, starting as a baby. With all of his knowledge from his previous life, and a new heaping helping of magical ability, Rudeus quickly becomes a formidable warrior ready for adventure. Oh, and he's still a total pervert.
