This print is available under the #artistsupportpledge The title has its genesis in conversations I had with the critic Mel Gooding as he prepared the catalogue essay for my exhibition at the Stephen Lacey gallery in London. The discussion centered on the idea that abstraction is inherently actual experience, as opposed to the reported experience of figuration. Mel, made the connection to Wallace Stevens’ poem “The Idea of Order at Key West” and that is why I used the title. (you can find the essay here: www.nickgammon.net/oceansandharmonics.html) But the idea of order delivering actual experience is attributable to Piet Mondrian, and now I live in Mondrian’s country. My partner @patricia_paludanus told me a story of how Mondrian, despite having made the most stunning paintings of trees, hated trees. So much so, he would position himself in any room to avoid seeing them. De Stijl changed the way contemporary world looks, not least through its influence on Le Corbusier and the Netherlands is a particularly geometric country. So now, when I see the shadow of a tree on an interesting piece of geometry I like the tension between the orderliness of the building and the chaos of the trees. And of course when I take a picture, then I am reporting. UNTITLED concrete sculptures... Painting for me is the first love. An important, pure love. Creating a painting, starting from the spasmodic research of a concept with which I want to send a message to transmit my message, it’s the base of my painting. The sculpture is my lover, my artistic betrayal to the painting. That voluptous and sensual lover that gives me different emotions, that touches prohibited cords… For my Concrete Sculptures I use my personal clothing.
