A woman, Calfuray, was caught in the no-man’s land of gods, having drawn the attention of two Kings of the Sea- Poseidon, and Kanaloa, the Hawaiian god of Sea, Underworld, and magic. The fight for her hand, unbeknownst to her, raged for hand, with either god having their own reason… Poseidon wanted the prophecy of a strong son from Calfuray, while Kanaloa was smitten with the superstitious woman, pleased to find someone who believed in him.
Unfortunately, Poseidon slipped into Calfuray’s work in the form of a handsome young man, and over the course of a year, secretly wooed her. A year later, Kaiko was born.
Kanaloa was furious with Poseidon for going behind his back like this, and blamed Kaiko, casting a curse on the poor child. Kaiko’s pupils were gone, and he could no longer see. Despite this, Calfuray loved her son and hid him from the vengeful Kanaloa, moving from Moloka'i to Kaho'olawe and relying on Poseidon’s delivery of fresh water to live.
At ten years old, Kaiko’s life changed for the worse; Calfuray fell deathly ill after failing to boil water properly. They were too far away for any medical attention, and Kaiko had to sit and listen to his mother die in front of him for ten days.
With Calfuray dead, any charm Poseidon used to hide Kaiko vanished, and he was suddenly thrust into another war. Kanaloa wanted him dead. Poseidon needed this strong son…. So, of course, Poseidon whisked Kaiko away into his underwater palace, away from the vengeful eye of the Hawaiian Sea God. And there Kaiko stayed, although Poseidon insisted on upholding the rule of minimal contact with demigods.. So Kaiko was alone. The nereids played with him, but they were afraid to stand up against this child whenever he threw a tantrum.
Eventually, Kaiko demanded he be allowed outside of the palace. Poseidon gave in, and dropped his son off at Camp Halfblood to learn how to live outside of the water again.
