Chapter Summary: Flash Fic #4. She finds him in a coffee shop.

8:27 a.m. Gilded Bean (Flash Fic #4)
The bustle of the coffee shop encompassed him in a pleasant haze.
Sipping his coffee, Oliver scrolled through his email on his phone, enjoying the relaxing slant of his shoulders caused by the chatter behind him, the footsteps of people hustling to the counter, the distinct sound of beverages being crafted. It complimented the busy downtown street outside the window he faced, the people rushing by, cars stopping and going, the sky clear for once, letting sunshine spill on the world.
He savored it, knowing he would be going back to his quiet office for the board meeting in thirty minutes.
Pinpricks of anxiety slithered over him.
Oliver sucked in a breath and quickly looked up at the busy world. His fingers tightened around his coffee cup, so hard the top nearly popped off. He fixed his eyes on signs of life - the strands falling from a woman’s braid, a man digging in his back pocket, a dog prancing by on a thin leash, the woman walking it staring at her phone, a dent in a passing car, a man talking to someone in the backseat of another car, pieces of hair sticking to the corner of someone’s mouth, a woman’s lips as she sang along to whatever came out of her headphones.
He clung to everything before him, holding it close, despite being outside of all of it.
A chime told him he had fifteen minutes to get back to the office.
He didn’t move. Instead, eyes not straying from the mosaic of life, he set his phone down and rubbed his thumb along the ridge of his index finger. The motion soothed him enough that he settled, his heart rate slowing. He calculated how long he could stay until he had to run back to the office to make it in time.
Six minutes.
Ten if he really booked it.
“Hey.”
Oliver froze.
For a split second he wondered if he was imagining it. He’d heard her voice enough over the last several months, whispering through his thoughts, and dreamt about it even more than that. It had become a permanent fixture in his mind during those days drifting on the ocean, memories coming to life, haunting him until he wasn’t sure if he was praying for death or for her.
A hint of her perfume sliced through the smell of coffee.
Oliver breathed it in, deeply, as the warmth of a person sitting down next to him fully registered.
Holding his breath, he turned.
His heart slammed into the floor.
God, she was a sight for sore eyes. She looked the same - her hair back in a high ponytail, dark-framed glasses, bright pop of color on her lips, her earrings exactly how he remembered them - but she was different, too. Calmer. Softer. A casual confidence made the air around her shimmer.
She was stunning, even more than he remembered, and all he could do was stare as the full breadth of how much he missed her hit him square in the chest.
“Felicity.”
A hint of a smile touched her lips and the quiet beauty of it shredded his insides.
“Don’t think I’ll ever be used to that,” she said with a little laugh.
Oliver huffed out a noise, something caught between a chuckle and a grunt, mostly because he felt like he should acknowledge her words somehow. And because his voice was gone.
He stared at her, his mind whirling.
He hadn’t seen her since the bluff last year, their bluff, a few weeks after he’d been found in the North China Sea. She’d found him on the cliff’s edge, staring at the water crashing into the rocks down below. To this day, he still didn’t know if he would have jumped, but then it hadn’t mattered, because she was there. And the second she touched him, he’d fallen apart, collapsing into her arms, breaking under the weight of all of it.
… the Gambit flipping in the frenzied sea, going under… terrified shouts for help from the crew before the ocean tore them away… his father shooting the captain in the face… propping himself on the edge of the raft, telling Oliver it was the only way before putting a bullet in his own head… Oliver’s frantic screams as he fought the rough ocean waves to get his father’s body back… the sea sweeping his father away, so far away, taking the gun with him… floating, for days on end, so many days, knowing he was going to die… hoping for it… wishing for it… so much that when the shadow of the freighter appeared, he finally felt a modicum of peace knowing it was all over…
But it wasn’t. He was still alive.
And the world was unchanged, unaffected, unaware.
She was the only one who knew what had happened out there. The words had come tumbling out in a fervor of raw emotion, running together, his tears blurring the edges until he was nothing but a sobbing mess that she held together all through the night.
Then that was it. They went back to their separate lives - her to a life that didn’t involve him, and him to continue his life with McKenna.
Except here she was, in all her beautiful glory, glowing with all the light he’d taken for granted.
“Hi,” he whispered.
It was all he had.
Her brow furrowed and he watched that familiar line appear between her brows. It always announced her troubled thoughts, no matter how hard she tried to hide them. His mouth went dry. Was she regretting sitting here? Did she wish she’d turned and left instead? They didn’t have much of anything to say anymore, did they? Not now. Not after everything. But the thought of her walking away again sent a white hot knife slicing through his gut and Oliver opened his mouth to beg her not to leave, even though he knew he didn’t deserve it…
She didn’t leave.
With a tiny whisper of his name, Felicity grasped his hand.
Choking on a surge of emotion, Oliver’s eyes dropped to where she touched him. How many times had they touched? In how many ways? Hundreds. Thousands. It was countless, and yet it felt like the first time he was feeling her skin against his. She was as soft as ever, and so damned warm. It wasn’t until this moment that he fully appreciated just how frozen he still was at his core.
His fingers curled around hers, his heart cracking when she held him back.
His phone chimed.
Oliver started, blinking rapidly, only realizing in that moment that tears had been filling his eyes. He swallowed hard as he glanced at his phone.
Five minutes.
“Damn it,” he breathed.
She tugged her hand out of his and the loss carved a jagged hole in his center.
“I have to go, too, actually,” Felicity said, sliding off the barstool. Her front grazed his arm in the miniscule space between them before she stepped free. She offered him another smile. “It was good seeing you, Oliver.”
“Yeah,” he replied.
Absently. Automatically. Blankly. Just going through the motions.
Which was all he’d been doing, wasn’t it? For months now. Floating through life, doing what he thought he was supposed to do, filling shoes he felt woefully inadequate in, going home to someone who barely pierced the surface of his heart.
And he was doing it here, with her.
He didn’t want to be numb anymore.
Oliver surged off his barstool, towards her. The coffee shop was busy, people loitering in line, baristas yelling names, glasses hitting tabletops, utensils hitting plates. All of it was suddenly so viciously clear that it hurt his ears, but none of it mattered as he looked at her.
A thousand words hovered on his tongue. None of them came out, nothing but…
“Thank you.”
“Yeah,” Felicity said, her smile warming. She grasped his bicep and pushed up onto her toes to kiss his cheek. Oliver’s eyes slammed shut and he instinctively leaned into her, his heart damn near ricocheting off his chest plate when she lingered for a second longer than necessary. Her lips moved over his stubble as she said, “Of course.”
As if it was a given.
As if he deserved it.
Oliver let out a ragged exhale and pressed his cheek to hers. She paused, but she didn’t pull away, like he thought she would. Like she probably should. Instead her hand tightened on his arm and then she pressed back, a stuttered breath dancing over the shell of his ear.
They lingered there, caught in the in-between, suspended between the past and the present, and a future that didn’t exist.
He knew nothing about her life anymore. He didn’t know what she had been up to. He didn’t know what she did with her time. He had specifically gone out of his way to avoid looking her up, because it was a closed door that needed to stay that way.
But she was also here, right here, right before him.
“Felicity,” he whispered, his hands finding her elbows, tentative, unsure.
I miss you.
With a ragged gasp, Felicity slid her arm around his neck and tugged him into her.
Relief shot through him and he sagged into her arms.
They hugged each other, tight, grasping, clinging so tight it hurt. Her nails bit through his jacket, a whimper he hoped he wasn’t imagining slipping out as she used her hold on him to yank him down closer to her. He pulled her flush against him, burying his face in her shoulder, and then her neck. The lapel of her jacket got in the way and he nosed it out of the way so he could breathe in that unique scent that was all Felicity. She smelled so good, so perfect, and something deep inside him slid into place, a missing piece he hadn’t realized was missing. A piece he hadn’t wanted to admit was missing. Because he needed it, like the air in his lungs, and the thought of living life without it for even one more second had him gasping her name again and pulling her in even more.
He had to leave. So did she. They had lives to live, lives that didn’t involve each other anymore.
But neither of them moved, not until someone bumped into them, breaking the moment. Even then, when they parted, they lingered in each other’s bubble, so much flying between them that he didn’t know where to begin thinking about it, much less talk about it.
They did finally part, though, and went their separate ways.
But they didn’t say anything, because they didn’t have to.
This was enough.
It had to be.

[MCLUL] Sunset - NathanielxCandy
Hello, hello. Finally back. I got back to you with something romantic and a bit cheesy. I thought now would be the perfect moment to post it because the next episode will be up soon and we all know what happened to Nath in episode 15. So it is time to cheer us all up!

A cool breeze enveloped me and made me tremble slightly. Immediately I began to miss the warm rays of the sun. I wasn't a big fan of hot weather, but I definitely didn't like the cold either. It was best for me on warm days when the sun was hiding behind the clouds and only warmed my skin at moments.
Unfortunately, today was not that day. Thermometers showed an extremely high temperature, and on television they warned against heat and short-lived droughts. Some weather events have even called today the hottest day of the year. But now, when the late evening came, and with it the sunset and the temperature drop, I began to regret that I had listened to Nathaniel and had not taken any sweater with me.
Warm arms wrapped around my chest and I felt a wide torso hug to my back. A familiar fragrance immediately enveloped me, and I instinctively snuggled into the figure behind me.
„Unfortunately, we don't have any blankets in the car.” Nath muttered straight into my ear, causing me to shiver again. „But if you want I can hold you close like this whole evening. That way you won’t be cold.”
„I think I will gladly agree to your offer.” I replied turning my head so as to hide half of the face in the hollow of his neck.
From where we were standing we had a very good view of the sunset. The sky was shimmering with many colors, but orange, pink and navy blue were most visible. A perfect combination. The way they reflected in the water and created a beautiful mosaic was magical. It was a picture that I would like to leave in my memory for the rest of my life. Me, Nathaniel, amazing sunset, peaceful ocean, sand under our feet and palm leaves above our heads.
I gently stroked his arms, which he still had wrapped around me, to draw his attention, but Nathaniel didn't move or say anything. I looked up to see his face better. It was clearly visible that he was debating with himself inside his head. The wrinkle on his forehead was even bigger, and his lips were tight in a narrow line.
„What are you thinking about?” when he heard my voice he bowed his head down and looked at me. Immediately a smile appeared on his lips, which I returned.
„You, angel.”
„Me? What about me?”
„About how amazing you are. That you never judged me. You helped me as much as you could. You stood by me when others left. You kept me alive.”
„Nath, we talked about thi—”
„Shh.” he silenced me. „Let me finish. I want to say that I am the happiest man on earth thanks to you. I came out of two shitty situations because you supported me. I couldn't have done it without you.”
Tears welled up in my eyes. Despite the fact that a lot of time has passed since those events, I still do not like to remember them. They remind me of pain and suffering.
„I love you. And always have. So I wanted you to be safe. There’s nothing noble in that.”
Nathaniel did not deserve such a crappy life, so I was extremely happy when he managed to leave his father and his shady businesses behind him. However, I cannot say that this victory was my merit. I only supported Nath, he came out of it thanks to his strength and good will.
„What you did then was what I needed.” he said hugging me tighter. „And I am very grateful for that. But actually there is one more thing I want to ask you for.”
„Hm? What is it?” I asked, surprised.
Nath lowered his head so that his lips touched my ear. It was an extremely nice caress.
„Be mine.”
Huge smile appeared on my face.
„As far as I know I've been yours for a long time.”
The blond shook his head smiling charmingly. He took one of the hands surrounding my chest causing me to shiver with cold again.
„No, not like that. I want you to be fully and legally mine.” his voice was soft, but a little trembling. „In return, I will be yours.”
The sun has already hidden behind the horizon and has given way to several stars. When I turned to Nathaniel with the misunderstanding written on my face, I noticed that the beach lights were on to add more light. But probably even without the light, I would see what Nathaniel had in his hand, which he slowly took out of his pocket. A ring. A beautiful silver ring with a small diamond.
„I-I—”
„Be my wife.” he said slowly. I could sense his nervousness. Suddenly, I was nervous too. „I promise to make you the happiest woman on earth. I will love you and protect you everyday.” Nath took my hand in his. „Just please, say yes.”
„Yes.” I didn't have to think long about the answer. It was obvious. „Yes, of course! Yes!”
I threw myself into his arms with many emotions. Happiness. Surprise. Excitement. Everything mixed in my head and came out in the form of tears and sobs. Nathaniel grabbed me efficiently and hugged me tightly, burying his head in the hollow of my neck. He was also crying.
We went through hell together to finally be able to create our own version of heaven and live happily ever after. I will remember this sunset for the rest of my life. These beautiful colors, quiet waves and sweet words of Nathaniel.
„I love you. So much”
„I love you too.”

OUMOTA WEEKEND DAY #3 - nightmares (& bed-sharing & comfort)
About nightmares and how they define us.

Momota wakes up from the nightmares with a hydraulic press, a maniacally laughing bear and the rocket that takes him to the stars and then straight back to hell.
His eyes snap open with an accompaniment of a startled half-sob and half-whimper that tears itself out of his throat. For a long moment he just stares at the bare ceiling above his head, disoriented and in a daze, images and sounds from his dreams still bright and loud in his head.
In a frantic panic, he extends his arm to the side, worry and need of comfort swelling in his throat until his fingers brush against something familiar, something undeniably human and he lets out a barely audible sigh of relief.
Ouma's here, he tries to reassure the heart hammering wildly in his chest. Everything’s fine.
Except, it really isn’t.
His breath is loud in his ears, labored, and he can tell that he’s on the verge of hyperventilating.
He furiously blinks away the last traces of sleep and looks at Ouma’s much smaller form curled up next to him and was actually sleeping quite peacefully. He knows that Ouma has his own share of nightmares and all of them undoubtedly much worse than his own.
Momota got lucky. With the personality he got, with the execution, hell, even with how quickly he adjusted after the game ended and was released from the hospital, he had been deemed completely healthy within a few short weeks. Ouma? Not so much. He was never lucky, despite what his name would have suggested. Not with the personality they gave him, not with how lonely they made him out to be. Too smart for his own good, too paranoid to trust. And his death… so utterly gruesome and cruel that it quickly made its way to the top of all The Most Painful Danganronpa Deaths lists that Momota’s seen when he dared to check the Internet shortly after being released from the hospital.
It’s actually one of not many nights where he sees him sleeping peacefully curled up in a tight ball after swallowing three sleeping pills on top of his usual medication.
Momota closes his eyes, but it quickly proves to be a mistake.
The traces of the nightmare are still lingering beneath his eyelids, a sickly pale and scared face of a dying boy moments before the descent of a death trap, moments before all there is is a strangled final scream and a mosaic of blood splattered onto the floor.
Even as the memory of the scene starts to fade slowly, the sounds - the crack of bones, the splash of blood as it hits the floor and the last choked up gasp that gets drowned out by the whirring of the machinery - remain, as real as if he was standing right next to the press once more.
The room feels suffocating.
With one last shuddering breath Momota starts to untangle himself from the sheets, careful not to wake Ouma up, knowing how little sleep he usually gets. Once he successfully manages to free his arms he throws away the blanket and with one last glance at Ouma’s sleeping face stands up on slightly wobbly legs. Blindly, he finds the wall and tries to navigate his way to the door in the near-complete darkness of the room. He snatches his coat from where he dropped it the night before and slips his arms into the long sleeves.
He opens the door to the balcony and steps out, feeling the cold gusts of early spring wind against the skin of his bare feet, goosebumps rising on his skin. It’s still pretty dark outside, the first touches of dawn painting the sky with rosy tint of blues and oranges, the fog still hanging low in the air and coiling around the nearby buildings.
With a shaking hand Momota reaches to the small pocket of his coat and fishes a box of cigarettes out of it, humming approvingly when it turns out to be almost full. He pulls out one of the cancer sticks and pushes the box back into his pocket. He brings the cigarette up close to his face and reaches for the lighter that he always kept in a flower-pot on the windowsill, so it is there whenever he needs it. Momota puts it in his mouth, the bitter taste already burning faintly in his throat and inhales lightly while holding the flame of the lighter to the tip. Soon enough dry fumes reach deep inside to wrap around his lungs and the pungent smell carries to his nose, familiar and comforting, wisps of silver-grey smoke curling and dancing before his eyes. He leans against the balcony barrier, watching for a moment as the curls of smoke drift into the chilly morning air.
He closes his eyes and tries to clear his head, throw out all those nagging thoughts away, so they won’t haunt him anymore.
The tendrils of smoke continue to float above his head, coiling and shifting until they fade into the thin air. There’s a sense of solace that you can only really see in the early hours of the morning before the city wakes up again with its noises and foul smells.
He’s on his third cigarette when he hears the shuffling from inside their little apartment.
“...Momota-chan?”
The voice sounds small, disoriented and still heavily laced with sleep.
“Shit,” he mutters quietly, blindly reaching for the ashtray lying on the windowsill.
By the time he slams the balcony door shut Ouma is already in the living room, crutches in hands, legs trembling and wobbling and bending as they struggle to support his weight.
Momota feels a painful strike of guilt piercing through his heart and hurries to his side.
“Here, let me help you.”
Ouma flinches when Momota’s skin brushes against his, just like he always does, but doesn’t protest. He passively lets Momota wrap his arms around him and support his weight, too used to it to protest even though he hates this forced dependence.
Slowly they half walk, half shuffle to the kitchen. Once there Momota carefully lowers Ouma onto one of the chairs, ignoring the smaller boy’s little huffs of annoyance and scrunched up in distaste face.
Momota moves to rummage through their cupboard, cursing Ouma’s extensive tea collection under his nose. For him it’s all the same.
“You smell like shit,” Ouma’s nose wrinkles in disgust at the acrid smell clinging to his skin like a heavy layer of perfume and Momota lets out a short breathy laugh and flicks him on the forehead.
“Yeah, yeah,” he says distractedly and turns to the faucet to pour water into their small red kettle, filling it to the brim.
When he turns back Ouma’s eyes are closed, little fists clenched and resting against his thighs. His useless useless legs. Momota quietly busies himself with the task of making him tea, just the way Ouma likes it.
A few minutes later he carefully puts a slender elegant cup before Ouma, one of the few things he has left of his grandmother. The real one, not the warm tender lady he remembers from his memories.
“You have another interview next week,” he starts slowly, carefully, his eyes never leaving Ouma’s frail figure.
“Uh-huh,” is his only response as he holds the cup in his hands delicately, blowing so it would cool off faster, the leaves of his favorite jasmine tea coloring the hot water with a rosy shades of gold. His expression is unreadable, only the slight tremor of his hands and barely-there furrowing of his eyebrows betraying his inner emotions.
It’s always kind of surreal - watching Ouma bounce back to his in-game persona, all wide smiles and carefully shaped lies and sharp words that know precisely where to strike for it to hurt. He slides the mask on his face as if it’s a second skin, teasing and taunting and then falling apart in the warmth of Momota’s arms once the act is all over. It’s even worse if he actually has to interact with any other participants, almost as if it’s pulling out some bitter and darker side of him. Sometimes it’s hard to separate the two - the Ouma he knew in the killing game and the one he sees every day, struggling to carry the broken pieces of his past self. There’s a sense of dissociation to it, the difference between what is true and what is false grew so thin and fading to the point that he can’t even tell them apart.
He’s not much better, really. Momota from the game is so vastly different from who he was before applying to Danganronpa. And yet neither version of “him” feels real, making him feel like he’s floating somewhere in between, disconnected from both and unable to find the energy to care to find an answer. He rejects the Momota from before the game but he can’t be the person Danganronpa molded him into being either. So he clings to Ouma as if he’s his lifeline and out of some sick sense of guilt - for being so stubborn, for killing him - burning inside him with an overwhelming intensity.
He remembers Harukawa’s accusatory tone when he told them that he’s staying with Ouma instead of joining them as soon as the hospital staff deemed them ready to leave, her blood-red eyes gleaming with something like betrayal. She demanded that he tells her that he’s just joking and once he admitted that he was serious and that it doesn’t change anything between them she scowled and left without a word. Saihara’s reaction wasn’t quite as violent as hers but there was confusion, so much confusion as his eyes widened and he stammered a surprised “are you sure, Momota-kun?”. And Momota smiled, offering the widest smile he could muster, the muscle memory making it easier to make him look like the Momota that he knew and assured him that he knew what he was doing. Saihara didn’t seem very happy with this response but he didn’t pry, simply nodding in understanding and waved him goodbye.
And so Momota stayed by Ouma’s side. Somehow they managed to find a fickle sense of comfort in each other and for now it is good enough.
Momota presses his lips into a thin line and turns to the kitchen counter, pulling out ingredients and items that he needs to make them breakfast, muscle memory guiding him through the motions once more.
“You don’t have to go, y’know,” he drawls while lining the eggs up on the counter with one hand and turning the stove on with the other.
He doesn’t have to look behind to know that Ouma shrugs.
“If I don’t go they’ll cut off our money,” he says emotionlessly. “And then we’ll have to go to work.”
He says ‘we’ but they both know that he’s nowhere in a state that would let him do that, making all the responsibility fall on Momota’s shoulders.
Danganronpa representatives are willing to offer the participants money as long as they continue to perform the duties included in the contract such as participation in interviews, attending events and doing whatever they could in order to maintain the hype of their season.
Momota is popular, especially now that the excitement related to the fifty-third season is still fresh, but not nearly as much as Ouma. The little liar quickly won the hearts of fans from all around the world. This meant more responsibilities, more interviews, more photoshoots, more events… more everything.
With Ouma’s slow recovery they cannot afford to lose the money, even if there’s something dirty about taking it from Team Danganronpa’s hands.
Momota’s fingers twitch, hands instinctively curling into fists and rage coiling in his chest. It’s in moments like these that old Momota breaks through the surface with all his raw emotions and recklessness. But even then it feels muted, unable to reach that passion from before.
“Momota-chan cares too much,” mumbles Ouma, making Momota snap out of his thoughts. “Like the big dummy that he is.”
“I'm not,” grumbles Momota cracking the eggs into the frying pan.
“Nishishi,” laughs Ouma and it’s the single most fake thing Momota has ever heard. He almost voices this thought out loud, words already forming at the tip of his tongue but he bites his lip before they have a chance to escape.
“Remember that you have therapy later today. I’ll drive you.” He says instead.
He reaches for one of their sharpest knives and starts to cut the carrots, keeping an eye on the sizzling eggs the whole time.
Ouma hums tunelessly.
“I’m not going.”
The knife slips out of Momota’s hand and grazes the skin, a scream that is more surprise than pain escapes his lips. The droplets of scarlet blood instantly form where the knife pierced the skin, dripping on the carrots and the marble surface of the kitchen counter.
“FUCK!”
Ouma observes the whole ordeal with passive expression, fingers tapping against the smooth surface of the kitchen table.
Momota rises his hand to suck the wound, the bitter taste of blood immediately flooding his tongue. A deep scowl twists his features and he levels his gaze with Ouma’s. The eggs are burning behind him, long forgotten.
“Like hell you’re not.”
Ouma doesn’t even blink.
Momota groans. He doesn’t feel like fighting Ouma, not over this.
“Why the hell not?”
“Momota-chan is a horrible hypocrite,” he mimics his mannerism from the game, smile creeping on his face. It doesn’t reach his eyes. “He makes me go to therapy but he stopped going to his.”
Momota frowns. “It’s different.”
Ouma’s face goes blank. Momota knows this look. This is a look he can’t win with.
“If Momota-chan doesn’t go to therapy then I’m not going to mine even if he drives me,” he says. There’s a sense of finality in his words, despite the childish pout that adorns his face and crocodile tears that start to gather in the corners of his eyes, his favorite guilt-tripping weapon. “I’ll just sit there for an hour and not say a word and then we lose the money we could spend on something better and then we’ll have nothing to eat and the-”
“Fine,” spats Momota through gritted teeth. “Fine! I’ll go.”
Ouma smiles brilliantly.
Resigned, Momota turns to save the rest of their breakfast with a heavy sigh.
He isn’t the person who he was in the game. He isn’t even the person who he was before the game. Neither is Ouma. He would like to say that they’re survivors but it doesn’t sound right, not yet.
He only hopes that they can get there one day. No matter how long it takes.

Mosaic
(No actual mosaics involved in the making of this...)
This ask is amazing and my heart grew two sizes writing this. I went on a bit of a break, so that’s why this took so long, but thank you so much for sending me this!!!
Warnings: Language and fluff
Jason was always your favorite muse. You had so many sketches, paintings and pictures of him that it almost seemed like you were obsessed. Maybe you were a little bit. Painting him was just one of the ways you coped with your feelings for him, so of course you had a lot of them. Some, you made from memory and some you recreated from pictures. It was hard to catch him on camera though because his best moments were when he didn’t think about being watched. When he relaxed and smiled or was lost in his own thoughts he had this ethereal beauty that you couldn’t help but paint.
Jason was always confused when you told him you painted him because he was beautiful. He viewed of himself as rugged and intimidating and thought that didn’t leave room for beauty. Your portfolio full of paintings of him begged to differ.
The idea for the painting came when you were going through your closet one morning. You had a bunch of your clothes and accessories thrown out on you and Jason’s shared bed and you were sorting through what you wanted to get rid of. Jason, who had been out the entire night before on business, came into the room about an hour into the process.
“Oh hey, did you want to sleep? I can move all this out into the living room and finish up there.”
“Nah, I’m gonna take a shower and then I’ll hang out in here with you. I don’t feel like sleeping right now anyway,” he explained. You gave him a look as he gathered some of his own clothes to wear after his shower. Jason felt your gaze and paused, turning to attempt to calm your worry. “It’s fine. I promise I’ll get some sleep later.” Though it was reluctant, you nodded and watched him head into the bathroom. His sleep schedule was something he rarely managed on his own so you were usually the one telling him to take his ass to sleep. He was usually stubborn about it, but you could tell the extra rest helped him out a lot.
After you heard the water from the shower stop and Jason returned to your bedroom, he flung himself onto the bed and settled among your piles of clothes. You could tell by the dark circles under his eyes and the way they fluttered halfway closed that he was sleep deprived.
“Jason, you look exhausted,” you said, throwing another shirt into the donate pile. He watched you with tired eyes, still keen on staying awake despite how much he really should be sleeping.
“I know, I’ll sleep soon. I just want to hang out with you for a while,” he responded. “You help me fall asleep after all this Red Hood shit.”
“I hope you’re not comparing me to something that puts you to sleep,” you teased, giving him a look. “You make it sound like I'm boring.” Jason laughed, rubbing at his eyes.
“No, not boring. You’re like a warm bath or something that’s relaxing,” he smiled. “Speaking of warm baths, can we take one tomorrow?”
“Yeah, whenever you wake up from your hibernation we can take one. I just got a cool bath bomb the other day.”
“Yesss,” he cheered, rolling over onto his back. He went quiet for a while as you folded your clothes and you hoped he probably fell asleep. Of course, he never let your worrisome heart rest that quickly.
“When did you get this?” You glanced over at his question and noticed him holding up a wide flower crown with pink and red roses adorned with plastic leaves.
“I forgot I had that. I think it was for a costume one time and I never wore it again.”
“You should, it’s cute,” he mumbled, turning it over in his hands. You smiled, pausing folding momentarily to check your buzzing phone.
“I’ll have to find an outfit that goes with it,” you replied. Jason placed the bright crown on his head absently, returning his attention to the pile of accessories he had been looking through. That was when he idea for your painting was born. The moment he put the flower crown on, you could see it: warm colors and sunrises in his eyes. You were eternally thankful that you’d picked up your phone at the right moment because you quickly snapped a picture as secretively as you could. Jason, probably too exhausted to notice, hummed to himself as he sorted through your things. If only he knew how beautiful he could be without even trying.
The painting took months to finish. You got a bit ambitious when you started it so you made it way larger than you normally did. You didn’t want Jason to know about it, so one day while he was out you bought a huge canvas, gathered all of your paints and brushes, and brought them over to Wayne manor. There were plenty of unused rooms there and you knew nobody would mind if you stashed your painting there.
There were only a few times a week where you could actually work on it, so the process went by slower than you would have wanted. It was kind of nice hanging around the manor though. Bruce came by occasionally while you were painting to see how it was coming along, silently admiring your work. Duke and Damian came by more often, keeping you company while you painted. In a way it was kind of a way for you to bond more with Jason’s family. They all loved the painting even when it was in it’s rough stages and were all interested in hearing about Jason’s reaction after it was done. Dick had even asked you to record the whole thing so that he could watch it later (A request that you politely declined). When you felt like giving up on the whole thing because you were frustrated, they were what helped you keep your resolve, so you were very grateful to them.
When the painting was finally finished, even you were in awe. It was a gorgeous oil painting of Jason, his eyes casted downwards and covered by long lashes. The flower crown rested on the top of his head just as you had photographed it and you used mixtures of warm colors and accents of purple to make it resemble a sunrise. Everyone was absolutely transfixed by your work and you just couldn't wait to share it with the man who inspired it all. You just had to wait for the right time to sneak it into the apartment.
Jason was rarely out during the day and you really weren't keen on moving it in at night, so you had to wait until the opportunity arose. Thankfully, once Bruce found out why you were waiting so long to take the painting home, he found a way to distract Jason and allow you to sneak it in.
Duke and Damian were the ones to help you take it out of the manor and into the apartment. It was big enough to cause you problems carrying it up the stairs on your own so they helped you carry it into the building. They were both dropping subtle hints that they wanted you to paint them next and you couldn't help but be amused by it. Once it was finally in your apartment, you set it up in your bedroom where you could lead Jason to it. Then, you called Bruce to let him know that everything was et up and he could send Jason home again.
When Jason finally made it home, you were pacing back and forth to keep from driving yourself crazy. When the door opened, you froze in your tracks, watching him walk in with wide eyes.
"Hey," he said, locking the door behind him as he shrugged off his jacket. He noticed your surprised expression and paused. "You okay?"
"Yeah, I'm fine. I have a surprise for you, though."
"A good surprise or a bad one?" He asked as he came closer to you, his eyes watching you cautiously. You reached out for his hands when he was close enough, taking them and leading him towards your bedroom.
"I'm guessing it’s a good one," he chuckled and you winked over your shoulder. Once you were to the door, you paused holding it closed behind you so he couldn’t see inside.
"Are you ready?" Jason nodded, smiling, and you pushed the door open. You stepped into the room and to the side where you could watch his reaction as he came in. His eyes caught on the painting immediately and he froze. You weren't sure what kind of reaction Jason would have to the picture, but his silence was driving you crazy. Even though everyone had told you the painting was beautiful, you honestly weren't sure if he'd like it or not and it was impossible to tell.
"Wha...when did you do this?" He said quietly, stepping closer to the picture. You could see his eyes gliding across the picture as he took a closer look at it, his hands ghosting along the edges.
"I finished it a few days ago, but i’ve been working on it for months. I kept it at the manor to keep it a surprise...Do you like it?”
“Do I like it?” he asked, turning around to look at you. “Y/n, there aren’t even words to describe how incredible this picture is. I...I don’t know how you do it...”
“Do what? you said, silently cheering to yourself that he liked it. As much as you appreciated everyone else’s input, his was the only opinion that you were fearful of.
“This...painting me like this. It’s...obviously me, but you make me look better. I don’t know how to explain it.”
“I didn’t do much. I painted it based on a picture I took of you,” you explained. The picture was still saved on your phone, so you quickly pulled it up and handed him the phone so he could see for himself. “I didn’t want to be cliche and only make it my lockscreen.”
“Yeah, but this must have taken you ages,” he responded, meeting your gaze again with soft eyes. “Why would you go through all this trouble just to paint me?”
“Because you’re so beautiful when you’re smiling and happy, but you never get to see yourself the way I see you. When you see yourself, you only see pain and anger, but you’re so much more than that.”
Jason’s expression was unreadable for a moment as he processed what you said. Then, his eyes fluttered and he was suddenly rushing towards you. You were startled by his sudden movement, but you relaxed once he gathered you up in his arms, lifting you off of the ground and burying his face in your neck. Jason’s sudden embrace brought a huge grin to your face. You were so glad he liked the painting and that you got to show him what you see when you look at him. There was so much love in your heart for him that you felt like you would combust if you didn’t share it.
Jason spun you around before he settled onto the edge of your bed, hs face still hidden in your neck. Though he was hiding from you, you could feel the sudden wetness against the skin of your neck.
“Jay, are you crying?” You asked softly, your hand moving to soothe his hair. You laughed a little when he shook his head but refused to show you his face. His arms held you tight against him as he found words.
“God, when you say things like that I don’t know what to do. Nobody’s ever said anything like that to me before,” he mumbled. You smiled, bringing your hands down to rest on his shoulders.
“Look at me, Jason,” you prompted. He hesitated, but looked up, finally meeting your eyes. Jason rarely cried around you, so it was a bit shocking to see the glistening in his eyes when he looked up. You slid your hands to rest at the base of his neck and kissed him sweetly. “I will always believe in you because you deserve the world and I’ll tell you that every day until you believe it.”
Of course, as soon as you said that, Jason closed his eyes and immediately buried his face back into your neck. You laughed at his response, but you were entirely serious. Even though you hated working on it at times, you were so glad you committed to finishing the painting. If it could make him feel this loved and appreciated, it was all worth it.

King of Anything - An Escaflowne Fanfiction
A/N: Because I can never stop when I’m having fun, I decided to continue this fic. Right now, I’ve about 13 Chapters outlined but who knows what all I still come up with. If you prefer to read on FFN, you probably know how to find it there.
A huge 'Thank you' goes out to Meghanna Starsong, my sharpest and friendliest critic, who has once again been instrumental in assisting me with this outline (which is still under construction).

Act 1, Chapter 2
In which Van finally gets his coffee but Escaflowne disapproves.
Fanelia's raven-haired king took similar, if not more, care whilst slipping out of the palace this time. His disguise was, once again, pivotal to the success of this little excursion. Granted, it was only the second time he was perusing it but it seemed as though the scheme could be a way of offering him a much-needed breather from now on when necessary.
Someone cleared their throat and it sounded as if amplified through a can due to the nature of the source, then hollered against the marble floor and walls. The sound demanded immediate attention and emanated clear disapproval. Van froze in mid-step down the deserted hallway just outside the royal apartments. Ah but of course. He had nearly forgotten the grouchy sentry who now never was too far away.
Almost like a puppy, he usually followed Van around unless otherwise instructed. Turning, the king peered at the robot who had stepped away from his guard post. Van was already mildly annoyed because for the better part of the day he had been trailed by hordes of foreign and Fanelian members of the royal council. Sure, he usually had a daily agenda anyway but this week was especially busy for various reasons.
The sentry in question, Escaflowne, had been in every ruling king's possession since the early days of Fanelian history. Purchased from the mysterious and elusive Ispano folk, the machine was a masterfully crafted protector and weapon. Considered a patron deity way back when, now more like a champion of Fanelia, Escaflowne had been rebooted again. Much unlike other melefs here, Asturia, Freid, Zaibach, or other countries south of the Big Seas, Escaflowne was unique.
The machine was tied to the king of Fanelia through a blood pact. To operate, it required the heart of a dragon. A drag energist had to be obtained by the worthy heir and that meant hunting and slaying one of the beasts. Escaflowne could only be activated this way and his service always ended, well, when the king ended. While other melefs were nothing more than drones, programmed to defend or perform manual labor, Escaflowne had a life and intelligence of his own.
"Going somewhere?"
Much to the occasional dismay of his master.
Escaflowne's eyes glowed in what seemed like amusement through the slit of the robot's helmet. While he had resembled a knight in traditional Fanelian samurai armor in some shape or form for generations before, his appearance had been thoroughly updated by the Ispano prior to this activation.
It was part of the service agreement to keep him under a lifetime warranty and up to the newest standards of Ispano technology. Improvements had been made which increased Escaflowne's degrees of freedom, allowed for more variety in his end effectors, as well as extended reach, payload, and repeatability.
"In a poor disguise unlikely to fool anyone, no less."
Together with an update of his behavioral characteristics befitting a more modern Gaea.
"Your father would highly disapprove."
And his internal memory storage, which had been expanded through another chip to add on to the centuries of knowledge stored away inside of him.
The machine towered over any human by a good three feet. His chassis was covered entirely by Ispano white, metal armor in mostly rectangular panels. The updated look still incorporated two diamond-shaped receptacles for green energists on each shoulder and one octagonal receptacle for the main energist on the left side of his breastplate, where a human's heart would be. This energist was the special one, the one Van had collected from the corpse of the dragon.
Escaflowne stood a few feet away from him, scowling as Van resumed on his way. Despite the king's current mood, it was good to have Escaflowne back. The last time the sentry had been in operation was during his father's reign over the country but it felt different now with him being the one to command it.
He still wasn't completely used to this monarch gig, burdened with decisions which affected not just him but everybody else in the kingdom. Although there were enough resources for advice in the form of an eager council -too many resources at times, really- he always put a great deal of thought into the consequences for each decision. Sure, he had been educated and prepared well for years but now it was real. It had felt different when Balgus was the steward of Fanelia, bound to rule within the tight guidelines set by ancient laws until the rightful heir finally claimed his throne.
"No need to follow," Van answered courtly and as an afterthought he added "don't wait up," while tossing his suit jacket with the Fanelian crest on the breast pocket towards the robot. Escaflowne's arm moved in a circular motion type to reflexively catch the garment. While it wasn't uncommon for patriotic people to sport the diamond-shaped insignia with the dragon wings on clothing items, it would probably be better to not wear it right now.
The king's daily attire had finally been given a major overhaul. Pomp and gaudiness had been toned down which allowed for more relaxed-fitting suits. Especially when it came to the damn tight collars and the amount of embroidery, as well as more dark colors instead of screaming, royal red. While Van casually made his way further down the hallway, Escaflowne's steps and robotic voice echoed behind him. "I'm compelled to inform you how absolutely terrible of an idea…"
Closing the heavy fire door to the emergency exit behind himself, the machine's last few words were muffled considerably. While Escaflowne's primary objective was to protect the royal family and Fanelian citizens from harm, the robot's programming was still slaved to Van's commands. He sighed in relief and descended the old, slightly uneven stone steps of the narrow staircase. The main structure of the palace was still original but plenty of renovations over the last decades had altered the overall appearance just like the rest of the city.
Old-town Fanelia close by the palace and the palace itself were reminiscent of the ancient, historical architecture the most. The core structures of most buildings were made from solid stone cut from massive boulders by stonemasons in centuries long past. In centuries long past when men rode into battle on the backs of Yerkle and no walls protected the citizens from the fury of dragons native to this part of Gaea.
Now, many, many lifetimes later, the original houses and storefronts had been modernized with materials such as glass and steel whenever alterations or renovations were performed. As the largest structure, the royal palace still remained the focal point. Built atop of a high plateau, the natural terrain of the mountain slopes it sat on was enforced with another protective, metal layer which doubled as the last line of defense for those inhabiting the palace. Luckily, the armament hiding inside the casing had never seen the light of day since it had been installed by Van's great-grandfather.
A bit further outward from old-town, the foundations of the first wall were still visible in some places as a concentric circle closer to the palace. The wall had been torn down several times to make room for a prosperous, growing city to provide more space. Each time it had been relocated, it had been rebuilt with upgraded materials or updated as time passed and more modern ways for defense emerged. Further north-east, a tall mountain range with sharp peaks enclosed the city from the back like a natural barrier.
It took a while for Van to make his way out of the palace although avoiding people who were more accustomed to seeing him in a less formal state proved to be suspiciously easy. Nobody seemed to even pay attention to him. Turns out, Escaflowne's worries were very unfounded. His disguise was downright impeccable! As he strode across the courtyard, a radio blared pop music from the guard post not far off.
Royal security guards were hardly alert, talking to each other about upcoming plans for days off and some such stuff. One of the larger men in royal crimson enthusiastically tapped his booted foot to the beat of the music and mimicked the female singer's voice with his own high-pitched falsetto. It made Van cringe a bit.
The courtyard was fairly wide, originally intended for military formations back in the day or ceremonies such as coronations, parades, weddings, and whatnot. He was passing the round, blue and white flower mosaic in the center of it shortly after. The one he'd kneeled on while being crowned king not long ago. That ceremony had also been annoyingly stiff and followed a bunch of ancient rituals. Really though. Were other kingdoms still so backward too when it came to all this?
It'd been a while since he and Merle had last gone on any diplomatic trips but he was pretty sure the heir of, say, Egzardia wasn't required to wear a full-on armor complete with helmet and cape at their coronation. On the other hand, there was also a good chance they didn't consider a razor-sharp samurai sword to be the ruling symbol of their monarch. The sword itself and the art of wielding it in training, Van had always appreciated but actually using it in combat, to kill something, was so very different than anything could have prepared him for.
The royal sword was an heirloom passed down through generations and the thought of holding something which tied him to the long line of kings before him filled Van with pride. The sword was, without a doubt, his most valuable possession.
Thing is, it should have been Folken's. His brother, who had for some reason failed at passing the rite of dragon slaying. Even after tossing the issue around in his head for years, Van couldn't figure out what had happened. There'd never been any rescue missions or search parties either. On this quest, the heir to the throne was on his own. If he died, he died. Not the best odds considering what they were up against but customs wouldn't allow someone to rule if they weren't worthy.
One would think this whole ordeal with Escaflowne, slaying a dragon by hand, and the energist made zero sense. Why would a king well-versed in mortal sword combat need a machine such as Escaflowne? Kind of pointless, right?
Wrong.
Apparently, the Ispano had been instrumental in ensuring that Fanelia was well guarded before a wall had first been constructed. A king responsible for protecting his citizens needed a badass sidekick after all. Before him, Escaflowne had been under his father's command. The robot remembered Van from the time he'd been active then but after Goau Fanel was taken by a deadly disease, Escaflowne went into a temporary idle state until Van awakened it with the new energist.
The sentry had recognized him immediately after activation, had memory storage devoted to Van and all their interactions but now, due to the upgrades and change in ownership, the mood between them was something else. Maybe it was also due to the altered settings in Escaflowne's software or whatever it was the machine operated on now. Obviously, Ispano technology had made progress in the last years again but what the robot's inner workings looked like, only they knew.
For the most part, Van supposed Escaflowne's endoskeleton was made similarly to the melef drones which guarded armored mining convoys traveling beyond the wall each day. So yes, people did go outside daily but it was only specially trained workers who stayed on established and guarded routes. Nobody in their right mind would deviate from that.
Thankfully, it had been weeks since the last dragon incident outside. Even then, those drones programmed to protect the armored vehicle convoys had been able to take care of it. Dragons were fierce but not immortal. They favored the climate in this part of Gaea and only very few strayed into other regions.
For this reason, Fanelia was home to the only dragon graveyards on the charted globe which made it the prime exporter for drag energists. Since a good part of Gaean technology operated on this power source, the small country of Fanelia was a critically important member of international trade proceedings.
That's also why so many countries had diplomatic reps residing in Fanelia. Good relations with the only source for drag energist power was essential.
Van never understood why his ancestors had chosen to set up camp here so long ago before modern technology was even a thing. Who builds a city in the most dragon-infested piece of this continent? His people, apparently. Sure, history books had been shoved under his nose just as soon as he'd been able to read. Not that they weren't interesting but a bit more freedom to choose other material would have been nice every now and again.
But there was no use in griping about it now. His heritage, the throne, while the general public and the paparazzi made it seem all kinds of extravagant, required a great deal of self-sacrifice. The only reason Van really never griped about it too much was that he truly cared for his people. His pride of country, even though dragon-infested, prevailed above all. And, of course, the love for his adopted sister.
Merle had joined the family when Van was so small he couldn't recall a time without her around. Not that he wanted to. Sassy and opinionated as she was, his sister was an anchor to normal life in the palace. A palace so big it sometimes felt like he'd get metaphorically and literally lost. He even still felt this way now as a man in his early twenties.
Actually, he felt like that especially while passing through the massive wrought iron gate, the entrance and exit which lead to a wide staircase flanked by two sets of elevators on either side. It was the main and only convenient way to get on and off the palace plateau. People were already lined up to leave after a day of diplomatic games at court. Men in suits carrying briefcases and women in modest dresses and heels with large purses.
Some looked tired but happy to leave, waiting to get to their homes down in the city, the royal court only a place of business, unlike for Van. After all, the king worked and lived here. That's why he needed a bit of a break. Some time to himself. Right now!
Nobody ever took the stairs, especially not up. Except before there were elevators, of course. It took about five minutes of walking to get all the way down and climbing the stairs was an entirely different workout altogether. Van didn't mind, especially not because it meant his chances for being recognized by an observant council member were pretty much slim to none. Again, not that anybody was even looking. They probably all thought he either worked here too or was the stuck-up son of a diplomat. All the better for him.
The only area where he encountered a few people again was towards the bottom where pedestrians sometimes liked to hang out. The narrow cobblestone streets of old town around the palace were popular with hip, young people for taking pictures, sometimes with the palace way up as a backdrop. Some of them liked to sit on the stairs to eat ice cream or drink a cup of coffee from one of the chains along the small square. A cup of coffee like the young man he was passing. A sub-par coffee served in a disposable to-go cup.
Van wrinkled his nose. Nope, he needed the real thing. A coffee brewed from freshly roasted beans that didn't come from an industrial-sized machine made to satisfy the craving of hordes of people every day. Good coffee required love and care in preparation and was served in a ceramic mug. A rather large one, if at all possible. Could he have gotten a stellar cup of coffee in the kitchens at the palace? Yeah, sure but it defied the purpose. He just wanted to feel carefree for a bit and that wasn't going to happen up there.
In that quaint shop not too long ago, he had gotten a very homey vibe and that wasn't just because the young woman behind the counter had basically halfway undressed him as if it was their shared home they'd been in. Van's steps slowed a bit at the thought and he paused at the mouth of the familiar, narrow alley. So full of drive to get there and redeem the promise of a cup of that steaming hot nectar of life had he been that he had forgotten all about the rather…scandalous incident weeks ago.
Some mad luck it was that nobody but him, her, and Balgus seemed to know about it. It would have been the headline of the month and he hated being on the cover of those paparazzi magazines.
Too late for second thoughts. The air was already redolent with the rich aroma of dark roast, the scent stealing out through the cracked door of the little, old coffee shop only a short distance away. It was enveloping Van, beckoning him closer to the source. The dark magic spell was just too strong. He wasted no time in making his way there albeit still wary of what would happen if she was really there again.
The little bell Balgus had abused so violently gave a bit of a muted ding when he entered. There was a small crowd of other customers this time but sure enough, a mop of short honey-colored hair was visible behind the heads in front of him. Not a long line but a few people, just like him, obviously still appreciated the slow pace of a little mom and pop coffee shop like this. These people didn't rush through life but instead took the time to sit down and enjoy the simple pleasure of savoring a cup of fresh brew.
The line moved only slowly but it didn't bother anyone as everyone patiently awaited the careful attention given by…what was her name again?
"Hitomi!"
Right.
"Hey, Yukari," Hitomi cheerfully greeted a redheaded woman in green scrubs in front of Van. "Nice of you to stop by. Do you just want the usual?"
"Yes but make it a triple shot of espresso, pretty please. I need it badly," the woman named Yukari responded while stifling a yawn with the back of her hand.
"You got it," Hitomi promised and got to work.
Van could see a bit better now. She looked just the same but was in a pair of jeans and a white shirt under the green apron. His palms became a bit sweaty and the cheek she had administered the impressive slap to tingled all of the sudden. Damn. Maybe he should leave.
Of course, right at that moment she turned around and placed the large cup and saucer in front of the redhead on the counter and saw him. Her eyes flickered to the side briefly, then widened in recognition.
Yukari liked to stop by the little coffee shop Hitomi worked at on the way home whenever she could. They didn't always have the same shifts at the teaching hospital. Of course, having a hookup for the best coffee money could buy was an incentive to come here above all.
Hitomi turned away from the back counter and served her friend but then almost dropped the cup when she saw who was standing behind her. What in the seven hells…
Her eyes widened and her brows shot up. Was this really?
Yep, it definitely was. No other than the king of Fanelia, incognito again and looking like a young business professional in dark navy slacks and a white button-down shirt with sleeves rolled up to just under his elbows. He was next in line after her best friend and roommate. With his raven hair disheveled and wearing the same mirrored shades again, he looked too effortlessly handsome to be completely inconspicuous. Hitomi's heart skipped a beat when he raised a finger and placed it on his lips, motioning for her to keep his presence a secret.
His lips. The sight made her heart skip another beat and her hands went cold. All of this happened in a matter of seconds so Yukari seamlessly accepted the cup from Hitomi before she squealed so suddenly it forced Hitomi to direct her undivided attention back to her.
"I almost forgot!" Yukari trilled full of excitement. "Amano's brother will be in Fanelia later this week and you won't believe it but he said he could get us into the Mystic Moon!"
The Mystic Moon was Fanelia's hippest and most extravagant nightclub. It was named after the phantom moon visible in Gaea's sky behind its smaller twin. Neither of them had ever been there because it was nearly impossible for normal folks to get in. It was a ritzy place for rich people and kids of diplomats to party the night away.
No wonder Yukari was excited. It wasn't that Hitomi didn't like to dance or go out to party. She did. But the thought of spending a well-deserved evening trying to unwind and have a good time in the company of people she wouldn't normally have anything to do with made her feel a bit weird. Not like they were likely to schmooze with Fanelia's high-society. These people could probably tell from a mile away that their clothing wasn't name brand and that this definitely wasn't their normal stomping ground.
Well, at least she'd have Yukari and Amano. After the day she had walked in on them making out, they had finally declared their relationship status as official. The fact that they were all roommates luckily didn't have to change even after that. They had known each other long enough but walking in on them practically piled on top of each other had been an unexpected shocker.
Yukari's now-boyfriend, Amano, who was one year their senior, had been in Fanelia already a few months before they came and started college. He had been an accomplished athlete in Asturia and gotten multiple offers for sports scholarships from colleges around Gaea, then ultimately chosen to move to Fanelia and pursue an education in engineering and whatever else that entailed.
Although Amano and Allen were twin brothers, they had always had different styles and interests so Hitomi and Yukari never got to know him well. Especially not after moving halfway across the continent. Allen had opted for a completely different line of work and was now the head of security to Asturia's princess, Millerna Aston. If Allen was going to be here, that meant princess Millerna was likely the reason for his upcoming presence.
"We need to talk outfits later tonight!" Yukari was already beginning to scheme.
"Sounds like fun," Hitomi lied successfully and watched Yukari nod and motion to a table in the corner.
"Don't want to hold up your line. I'll be right here, reviewing a few pages in our beloved tome of anatomy while you work." Yukari said while already moving towards it.
Hitomi held her breath when her friend turned and nearly bumped into the tall man behind her. She briefly looked at him and smiled while shuffling past him. "S'cuse me."
"Ok great," Hitomi acknowledged her friend while already face to face with the dark-haired man who had been patiently looming behind her best friend until now.
That. Smug. Look on his face. Okay, maybe it wasn't intentional but he clearly came off smug. It was actually, probably just the sunglasses. Hitomi couldn't tell what he was really looking at and that bothered her. He did, of course, have a good reason for hiding though. So what. The reigning monarch wanted some coffee. No big dealio.
Dragonshit.
Of course, it was a big deal. Why was he here again of all places?
Oh drat, that's right, Hitomi remembered. Again, all this took place in a fraction of a second. Before he could even speak, she turned towards the back counter and filled one of the large mugs to the brim with piping hot coffee.
"Black, right?" Hitomi said while sliding it across the counter towards him with as much of a neutral expression as she could muster. "On the house," she said and it unintentionally may have come out a bit rude. Good thing nobody was paying attention because she clearly wasn't good at pretending like this was an absolutely normal transaction.
"Thank you," the disguised king said with the hint of a warm smile. Fine, maybe he really hadn't intended to come off smug but seeing him again right here made her remember the incident in such clarity as though it had only just happened yesterday.
The way she had shamelessly unbuttoned his shirt as if he was just a regular guy off the street. His warm hand on top of hers while stopping the bleeding on his wounded, upper arm. And then, of course, sitting on his lap, and….and…
Their encounter, although brief, was something she'd probably never forget.
It was so crazy she'd never even told anybody about it. Yukari was her best friend but even she would have laughed. Yeah, right. The king himself, waltzing into the shop disguised as a commoner. Recounting Hitomi's own clumsiness would have definitely checked out but then, the picture-book accident, like a scene from a silly rom-com. She probably wouldn't have believed it either.
For a while, she'd even convinced herself that it hadn't really happened. Not until she had found one of the paparazzi magazines Yukari loved so much open on the coffee table a few days later. It was turned to a page that had several pictures of 'The Most Eligible Bachelors on Gaea' on a double-page spread.
Undeniably, it had been him. His stature, the hair, the dark skin, and of course the garnet red eyes. Unique, garnet red eyes that were at this moment hidden to the world by only a pair of sunglasses. A pair of sunglasses attached to the very man standing right on the other side of the counter, still offering her a gentle half-smile.
Hitomi took a calm breath. He actually hadn't been completely insufferable even after she had, very deservedly, defended herself by slapping him so hard it'd immediately left a searing, red mark. Not a permanent one, as far as she could tell, thankfully. Come to think, did they still execute people here?
Now that she thought of it, the way to dispose of severe offenders in Fanelia was to ban them beyond the wall. But really, that hadn't happened in decades. It was a severely antiquated form of punishment. Eaten alive by a dragon? Probably not the law of the land anymore. Although…
"You're welcome," Hitomi finally forced herself to say as casually as possible. A side glance at Yukari confirmed that her friend was anything but attentive anymore after a, no doubt, hectic day at the hospital. Some days, patients demanded a whole lot of energy besides the free care they provided.
The tall, dark, and handsome man in front of her finally accepted the mug and was about to walk away but then reached into his trouser pocket. With a smooth movement, he dropped a crisp, folded bill into the tip jar full of coins and then found a seat at a tiny table on the far side. He sat sideways in the chair, leaning his back against the wall and propped one arm up on the table to hold the mug possessively even while he wasn't drinking.
Hitomi decided she'd try not to care that king Van Fanel was casually sitting on the other side of the room although this course of action was, naturally, sure to compel her to care even more.
Leaning against the wall behind him, he looked like his eyes could be closed but Hitomi thought she saw him tilt his head her way every now and again while she served a few more customers and then busied herself with some cleanup. Admittedly, she caught herself sneaking some glances here and there too. Okay, maybe more than just here and there.
Hey, nobody in their right mind would blame her if they knew what was up. It wasn't even just because he was the king of all Fanelia that she caught herself looking. He was, as previously mentioned, also very easy on the eyes. Especially with his shirt off.
No! Not that! Any thought but that!
Hitomi quickly ducked behind the counter and cupped her flaming cheeks in cool palms. She almost fell over backward when Yukari's head appeared from above.
"What are you doing down there?" Her friend asked.
Hitomi quickly snatched a clean rag from the pile on the little shelf next to her. "Just looking for this," she said weakly while it dangled in her grasp.
"Ah. Well, I'm gonna go now. Amano and I will get dinner started. Should be ready by the time you get home," Yukari waved briefly while Hitomi straightened back up.
The redness on her face was still present but what was there to do about it?
"Cool. I'm going to close at six," Hitomi said despite the nervousness.
"Say, " Yukari finally asked. "Are you okay?"
Her façade had obviously been not as convincing after all. Was she okay? Hells no, the king of Fanelia was sitting mere feet away. Was Yukari really not seeing that?
"Yes! Of course," Hitomi answered almost a bit too fast while her disobedient eyes stole a glance at the raven-haired man not far away.
Yukari briefly narrowed her eyes but then turned and walked towards the door. "You're such a weirdo sometimes. Later!"
Hitomi breathed a sigh of relief when her friend left. There was no telling what would have happened if Yukari had found out just who was sitting by the wall, now idly playing with the handle of the mug. It was astonishing that she hadn't recognized him right off the bat.
Yukari was one of those people who loved gossip about high society and read magazines published by the paparazzi during lunch breaks. Was the king's disguise really this good? No. No, it absolutely wasn't! Now that she looked at him again, it was totally obvious. Anybody should be able to tell. Who was dense enough to not recognize somebody just because they decided to sport a pair of glasses and mess up their hair?
Turns out everybody, including her, actually. She hadn't recognized him the first time either but attributed it to the fact that she didn't follow the high society news and never made it a point to sift through papers or magazines looking at pictures of 'The Most Eligible Bachelors on Gaea'. And if, then most certainly not the royal-blooded kind. The kind like the man gaping in her direction now.
Big yikes. She had been caught looking directly at him. A gigantic sweatdrop formed on the backside of her head when she noticed that Van was staring right back at her. How long had she been gawking? Seconds? Minutes? This was mortifying. She began to panic a bit when he rose from the old, worn chair and sauntered right up to the counter.
Without much ado at all, he placed the empty mug before her and said "thank you for the coffee," then pushed it a bit further her way before adding quietly, so that none of the last few people in the small room could hear, "I apologize for bothering you."
Great, now she felt bad. Hitomi reached out instinctively and groped for the empty coffee mug, staring at her own reflection in his shades while distinctly remembering what his eyes had looked like up close. Her fingers brushed his warm hand but he didn't hurry to retract it.
At least he had good manners and was nice enough to bring his dishes back. Further confirmation that he maybe wasn't such a bad guy after all? Less of an enigmatic, royal pain than Yukari's magazines depicted him to be. In the pictures she did see every now and again, king Van Fanel looked untouchable, serious, and rarely smiled. He was always wrapped in an invisible cloak of admiration, adulation, and respect and that showed in his demeanor. The demeanor of a royal who never let his guard down.
So much unlike now. Right now, in this cozy, friendly place he looked like he felt…comfortable. Like he was able to let his guard down for at least a short while. Maybe that's why he was here. He had said something along those lines after the…incident. Gods be damned she really needed to stop calling it that. It had been a kiss. His lips had been on hers, full on.
Then, after she'd delivered her retribution, he'd apologized and it seemed to have been sincere. After that, he had justified his desperate course of action. Hiding from his guards and wanting to be alone for a minute had been the very simple reason for that shorted circuit in his brain. Something about wanting to feel normal and not like the fate of all Fanelia was going to be resting on his shoulders soon.
Well, now it was. The weight. Resting on his shoulders. But he was carrying it well enough so far she was aware. Even she had read the announcements and news articles about his coronation not long ago and seen him in the ceremonial armor. A bit olden-timey but a guy like him, emanating that kind of swag, could probably look good in anything.
There they were again. Uncalled-for thoughts that would lead nowhere although he wasn't making any haste in retrieving his hand from under hers, or was he? She chanced a glance there.
The woman's eyes flickered to their barely touching hands and it made Van snap out of this frozen moment in time. Although the effect of the delicious coffee had him on high alert, the spellbinding power of the honey blonde's green eyes was stronger.
This situation was quite unusual. He felt so at home in the little coffee shop, had enjoyed sitting there by himself, sipping some hot brew out of an old, overused mug scratched inside and out from stirring spoons and endless use.
It was exactly what he'd needed but he hadn't bargained with being quite so captivated by seeing her again. It was really him who was to blame for all the awkwardness. If he hadn't used her so shamelessly, stolen a kiss just to hide his ass, they wouldn't be in this situation now. Maybe sneaking out of the palace wasn't such a good idea after all. It only caused trouble.
Maybe Escaflowne had been right. Not that he'd ever admit that of course. Not out loud, at least. Van finally and carefully retrieved his hand and offered the woman another hint of a smile. He hoped it looked genuine enough to convey everything he had just thought about because there wasn't really ever going to be a chance to talk about it again.
Van forced himself to leave but he could still feel the ghost of her touch on the back of his hand when he began to climb the palace steps. Rubbing the tingling spot across his trousers, he shook his head. Why was this bothering him so much though? What exactly was his problem?

Curses, Curses. Chapter 14
Now that Kyle’s curse has been broken, he intends to find a way to break Kenny’s. No matter that the guy has been dealing with it for years. However long it takes, whatever he encounters, Kyle is determined to stop the universe from trying to boot Kenny off the face of the planet. Even if he has to face it head-on.
Karen popped up at Kyle’s shoulder once his day was over, all smiles and flyaway brown hair.
“Hey,” Kyle closed his locker, hefting his backpack over his shoulder. “Sorry I didn’t drive you guys to school today. Car problems, I ended up walking.”
“Kenny told me, Kyle, it’s okay!” The girl actually looped her arm with the older boy’s, smiling like sunshine up at him. “He says he can look at it for you, I just have to keep you from going home too soon. Want to walk with us?”
Kyle tsked his tongue, but walked arm-in-arm with Karen easily. “Kenny doesn’t have to look at my car,” He said. “I can get it looked at. Besides, he works at a gas station, not a car shop.”
“He worked at one last year,” Karen explained as they more or less forced other students to move so they could walk side by side down the high school hallways. “Kenny’s worked almost everywhere. He’s good at everything.”
Kyle couldn’t help a smile as he nodded slightly. Kenny was loved very much, of course, by his little sister. Karen had grown, but her love of her brother never wavered. If anything, she seemed to worship the middle McCormick.
As for the oldest, Kyle never asked where he moved to when he stormed out. He doubted even they knew.
Kenny was waiting at the bottom of the stairs, and laughed when he saw the two.
“Are we off to see the Wizard?” Kenny asked with a grin. “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz?”
Karen laughed and looped Kenny into their line. The three of them strode outdoors.
“Did your dad get your car started, babe?” Kenny asked, from over his little sister’s hair.
“Nope.” Kyle shrugged. “I’ll get it looked at, Ken. I know you work today.”
“Not until later,” Kenny lifted his chin, eyes sparkling. “I’ve got time.”
Kyle pressed his lips together to hide his smile. “Fine.” It did give him a great excuse. Kenny didn’t seem to own a coat, despite the fact Karen clearly had a newish one, and if he even looked at the car he’d have a reason to buy Kenny something without too much of a fuss. Kyle eyed his worn sweatshirt. Something insulated and warm.
Karen wanted to stick around while Kenny looked at the car, but insisted she was fine outside. Kyle ran in to grab his keys off the coffee table.
“Hm? Is your car working?” His mother absently called from the kitchen.
“Kenny’s going to look at it, Ma.” Kyle glanced up. “He knows what he’s doing.”
“Little Kenny?” That tidbit was enough to get his mother’s interest. She poked her head out to go over to the window and peer out.
“Ma.”
“And his sister! Why are you making them stay out in the cold, Kyle?” His mother more or less started shoving him towards the door. Kyle’s sneakers slid against the carpet. “Go, go, go. Tell them to come inside and have some something warm to drink.” Sheila finally let her son go, stumbling a couple steps. “Kenny isn’t even wearing a coat, look at him!”
Why did he think his mom was going to be a problem?
Kyle stumbled outside, where Kenny was listening to his sister chatter with a soft smile on his face. Fucking. Cute.
“Hey,” Kyle called over. Both siblings turned to beam at him. “My mom wants to know if you want to come in and get something to snack on afterwards.”
“Yeah!” Karen fistpumped, scarf flying.
Kenny caught the keys tossed at him, shooting Kyle a flirtatious smile and a wink. Kyle shook his head.
“Watch me work my magic, Broflovski.” Kyle swung the keys around on the keychain.
“Waiting with bated breath,” Kyle deadpanned as Karen bounded over to sit beside him on the front stairs.
Karen leaned her head against Kyle’s shoulder, looping arms again. Kyle found it more sweet than strange. He loved Ike, having a younger sister would have been nice, too. Kyle sat next to her and smiled over at the mechanic, who was whistling as he pulled up the hood.
“I’m going to make you a new hat,” Karen suddenly said.
“What?” Kyle asked, looking down at her.
She reached up to touch his worn, often-restictched ushanka. “I learned how to knit. Your hat’s all falling apart, Kyle. You still like green?”
“Green is great,” Kyle said, a touch bewildered. “Thanks, Karen.”
The girl hummed happily and went back to watching her brother.
“It’s a battery problem,” Kenny called over to the duo.
“What magic!” Kyle teased with a grin. “Astounding! A battery problem, who could’ve guessed?!”
“Yeah, yeah,” Kenny waved at him. “Laugh at the poor man slaving over the car hood. Laugh it up, I might change my mind.”
“Want me to help push it into the garage?” Kyle offered the asshole. “So you’re not standing out in the cold?”
“Mmm… Maybe.” Kenny leaned over the hood. “My hands are freezing off my fingers.”
Gloves. Gloves, too. Something waterproof and lined.
FWOOM
A crackling noise, then a sudden feeling of mild irritation. Fucking Assholes. Then peace, calm. He and Karen just stared out at the street, where they’d been watching cars go by.
It was nice that Karen liked him. He’d always gotten along with her, though. Kenny was fiercely protective but of course, he trusted Kyle to be alone with her. He’d look after her if Kenny wasn’t around.
The affection Kenny offered typically wasn’t said. Kenny offered physical love, but didn’t say a whole lot other than cheesy nicknames. Relying on Kyle, trusting him with his sister, however, that and Kenny hanging off him every few seconds made it apparent he cared about him.
Kyle was fairly certain he loved Kenny, honestly. Might have even before the whole curse fiasco.
Something sharp, like pain, pierced into Kyle’s mind. A memory, a jab of something he should already know.
The blood drained from Kyle’s face.
“Kenny?” Kyle sprung up. It was like now could see something, like he’d been blind in one eye. “Kenny?”
“Kyle?” Karen was staring up at him, a mildly puzzled, content smile on her face. “What’s wrong?”
Kyle stared.
Kenny.
The car.
Curses.
No.
Kyle flew towards the car, wind whipping against him. He felt like he as running in slow motion. Everything felt foggy, slow.
The world flew back into focus the next second.
Kenny was lying on the concrete, eyes open. Bits of metal stuck into his face, his sweatshirt, making it look as if he were dirty. Liquid from the car seeped into his shirt and splottled his skin. He was bleeding. From wounds and from his orifices.
“K-Kenny…” Kyle fell to his knees beside him, the cold concrete roughing up his knees through his jeans. “Kenny?”
He was so still. So very still. He’d never seen Kenny like this, devoid of color and movement. Everything that made him Kenny.
“What’s wrong, Kyle?”
Kyle didn’t even register her voice at first, frozen in horror. Kenny was pale, unmoving, a look of surprise frozen on his face. He hadn’t even heard him cry out…had he screamed? Kyle cupped his face, cold under his fingers. How long had he been dead and he hadn’t noticed?
Oh God. Dead. Kenny was dead.
A whimper slipped past his lips. Dead. Kenny had died. Kenny was killed.
“Kenny…” Kyle kept repeating his name, vision blurring. His shaped, cold face against his fingers. No pulse. He’d just been cuddling last night, he was warm and vibrant and here he was cold and white and dead, dead, dead.
“Kenny’s busy. He’ll be back.” Kyle slowly lifted his eyes to see Karen watching him with that vague smile, unbothered by her brother’s corpse or by Kyle’s jeans soaking up his blood.
Kyle looked back down. Beautiful mosaic eyes stared up at the clear sky, dead as glass.
“…Kenny.” He brushed his thumbs over his cheeks.
“I’m glad you’re dating Kenny, Kyle.” Karen went on, happily pulling her scarf over her lips. “You make him so happy.”
“Please don’t do this, Ken. Kenny, please.” Kyle leaned over him, feeling himself shake. He might be sick. “Please. You fucking dick don’t you dare…Ken, Ken, please.”
“He liked you for a while, you know.” Karen’s voice was soft. “Since we were little.”
“Kenny. Y-you better come back. Soon.” Kyle was shaking so hard his fingers tapped over his cheeks. “Kenny, can you hear me? Don’t you dare…leave me here…you better come back. Right now.”
“He loves you so much, Kyle.”
“Kenny!”
“Don’t cry, Kyle. Everything is fine.”
“Don’t you fucking leave me, Kenneth McCormick! FUCK!”

Model’s: Thank you for the awesome job y’all did this cycle! It’s not easy to put yourself out there and be judged, even for fun, and all of you did an amazing job this cycle! No matter who wins (cuz I don’t even know at this point lol – math time!) I hope you are all proud of the job you did, because I am! Congrats to all of my Cycle 7 models for being wonderful!
Judges: Just as it’s not easy to put yourself out there to be judged, it’s not easy to be the one doing the judging. I’ve been a model and a judge, so I know both are hard in different ways. To have to be fair, and analyze each image, sometimes having to nitpick because all of them are just so good! Y’all have a hard job and I thank you for doing it and making it look so easy! Thank you, Cycle 7 judges, you’re amazing!

Kusuh Valentione: This is a pretty spot on take of Takaya. The color filter and screen effect work nicely together and the pose and angle do work in your favor. The background looks wonderful in this picture and actually sets the mood for your whole entire set. All in all this looks like in belongs in the world of Persona. I've really enjoyed looking at your photos this cycle and have seen how much you have grown and you took the judge critiques and used them to your advantage.
Doki Kodoki: I remember being a teen when the first .hack// game came out and I loved every minute of it. Sadly that's my only really knowledge of the franchise but I've always been drawn to the art style and overall feel of the series. Without even glancing at who you were cosplaying, your picture instantly reminded me of .hack and I was happy you brought two "MMO" worlds together. I wouldn't have thought of this outfit and it works so well! The background and the staff give me a stronger vibe more than anything else.
Rivienne Cotrlaint: I have to admit I haven't ever heard of this character nor the anime. But you worked it out and made the picture your own. The songbird outfit works well for the outfit your trying to capture in the picture and the dark background gives that extra eeriness. I think my favorite part of the whole picture would have to be the lanterns in the background. I'm instantly drawn to them and the background.
Noesis Phobos: So while this was not trying to be an exact replica, you make it your own and it looks totally awesome! I love the shadows and the mystery of the picture. The brightly lite background complements the red shade and the shadowy figure rushing off. This is creating a unique but also staying true to the original type of work.
Stephen Fairbrook: It's a case of who wore it better, but I have to say you both rocked these photos. The Joker pictures were two of my favorite because while they are both of the same character, the bring their own unique looks and feels to them. I'm loving the ledge shot with all the people down on the lower floor. Makes the photo look busy with minimal effort on your part.
WoW Wie: Harley is one of my favorite DC comic characters. While at first, I didn't like this photo that much it grew on me and you can see Harley and Joker's dysfunctional relationship in this picture. I really like the outfit and thought you did a wonderful job.
