So they turned my soft healing slice of life romance drama into a murder mystery for reasons. If I had a nickel for every time this has happened you’d be shocked at my pile of nickels really.

Seeing this ongoing trend of romance kdramas having a boring thriller and murder plot makes me appreciate well written ones even more, like You Are My Spring

You Are My Spring (2021)
Tumblr media
Enjoyed this drama a great deal. The funny parts were very funny, the soft center of the OTP romance was good. Other parts were very uneven.
The (*spoiler*) evil twin murder arc, with creepy stalker vibes, and a surprise third act villain who is The Real Murderer, was a bit much. It didn't mesh well with the (slightly) more realistic main plots. The tonal shift caused problems for me, and I ended up skipping most of the scenes of the murder arc. I understand the point the writer was making with this, but the arc just wasn't enjoyable to watch.
Overall the show was a well-written romcom, meshed with a dramedy, with a murder mystery bolted onto the side. It can make for a jarring experience and I can see how this would cause problems for some viewers.
What Worked
The humor was amazing! It reminded me of more western sitcoms/dramedies where the characters are wittier and zanier than real life, and I enjoyed every moment of it. The characters were all fun and interesting. All of the friendships were fun, and funny, and caring. The mother (Mun Mi-ran played by Oh Hyun-Kyung) was amazing and I enjoyed her interactions with the other characters. I even liked the way English was used to show certain characters being frustrated (though some actors had better English delivery than others).
What Didn't Work
Sometimes the show leaned a little too hard on the cute factor. Especially all the adorable child actors who got more screen time in some cases than was really needed. Some of the adult characters were too over-the-top and turned grating. The scenes were never long enough for this to be a drag on the whole show, but it was noticeable. The entire murder-mystery plot didn't land for me, but it wasn't terrible. It ended up being net neutral and mostly a waste of time. Note: I do think some of this was due to filming restrictions forcing alot more 1:1 scenes, so it's kind of graded on a curve for me.
The Performances
Seo Hyun-jin as Kang Da-jeong. The only show I saw her in before this was Black Dog and my feeling on her performance was very mixed. She is so much better in this role, and I think she is just a very good comic actor (with some range), and the writing in Black Dog did not play to her strengths. I loved her in this role, and I'll be looking for more of the rom-com type roles she's in.
Kim Dong-wook as Joo Yeong-do. I liked him in this role, and would have a hard time seeing other people doing this, but I didn't completely mesh with him like other leads. He played sympathetic very well, and did okay with the funny, but I had trouble with the "noble idiot" arc his character was on, and some of that was the writing and some of it was the performance.
Yoon Park as Chae Joon/Ian Chase. He did a good job being menacing and creepy. He played the tortured past pretty well. I never felt sympathetic to the character. I don't think this was primarily a performance issue, the writer put themselves in a dilemma here as the character's actions (or at least what the audience sees of them) were so egregious that it's very difficult to win back sympathy. But it might have helped to have a more charming actor in place, or else letting the actor be more charming in his performance.
Nam Gyu-ri as Ahn Ga-yeong. I loved this character. They rode the edge between funny/zany and completely bonkers with her, but the actor kept it on the right side of the line most of the time. I think the few sad scenes were well done (though not her strengths), but this was a case where the writing and the casting worked very well.
Oh Hyn-kyung as Mun Mi-ran. I loved this actress so much. The character was a great mix of strong, funny, sad, and no nonsense toughness. I know she's had a long career, but I would love to see more from her.
Park Ye-ni as Heo Yoo-kyung. It's rare that a side character played by a rookie actor gets my attention, but she was just really funny! I wish they'd given the character some kind of arc, but I still loved to see her on screen.
Hwang Seung-eon as Jin-ho. Another good performance with a character that should have gotten more screen time (at the cost of the kiddos or some of the other best friend antics). Not a standout, but still interesting to watch.
Everyone Else. There were some weak links in the writing / acting (a few of the kiddos—especially the English speaking ones, the Canadian doctor, the "lovey-dovey" couple), but the rest of the cast did a good job. The detectives managed to ground the (completely bonkers) murder mystery, the friend characters were fun, the nameless villains were suitably despicable, and even the fake TV show was silly and fun.
TL; DR:
An enjoyable show that is thoughtful at places and very good at comedy. I had trouble with a few of the arcs and situations, but still solid and a good watch.
