Hi !!
I'm such a big fan of your artworks, especially Rozin. (They just mean so much to me, I can't get them out of my mind..) and I would love to ask you this,, What are your thoughts that Rokus' companions in the novel are both Gyatso and Sozin? I would love to see how their characters to be fleshed out and what they were like before especially Sozin. I'm simply so filled with ectasy and excitement for his upcoming book since he's one of my favorites aside from Aang and Kuruk.
Hiiii thank you so much! I’m so glad that you enjoy my art, it always makes me so happy when people tell me that :)
But also I am SO GLAD that you brought this up because there’s so much POTENTIAL THERE. Roku’s gonna be dealing with Sozin, his best friend from childhood, and Gyatso, who is described as a bit of a nuisance but we all know they’re gonna be besties. There’s the potential for an interesting dynamic- Roku's past life as Sozin's BFF competing/conflicting with his new life as the Avatar. There's also Sozin fighting to stay Roku’s friend, his past fighting to stay in the present, and Gyatso being as lovable as he is, the future slowly becoming the present and pushing the past farther back. I foresee some jealousy on Sozin’s side mayhaps, and maybe some frustration on Gyatso’s side because “Why is this Fire Prince being so MEAN TO ME I’m LITERALLY the AVATAR’S BFF!!” I can't get my thoughts in order rn because I have been doing Work and my brain is Dead but I understand and share in your excitement 100% :)
but the idea of jelly Sozin was actually was so juicy that I wrote a lil thing about it I hope you don't mind :)
“And here is your room,” Sozin said with a smile, pushing open the door and revealing the inside with a grand sweep of his arm. “I made sure nobody came in and moved around all of your stuff; the dust on the floor is 100% natural!”
“Wow, thanks,” Roku scoffed, unable to keep a smile off of his own face. “I’m so glad. Thank you, Sozin, I do appreciate the gesture.”
“Right…” Sozin’s smile softened and he peered up at Roku through his eyelashes, his cheeks darkening. He’s always been the shorter one, and he seemed even shorter now that Roku had hit yet another growth spurt. “You know, I really missed you. I’m glad you’re home,” he said quietly, as if he was afraid that someone would overhear.
Roku bowed his head so he could look down at his best friend, a similarly soft smile on his lips. “I missed you too,” he whispered back. “It’s weird not seeing your dumb face every day.”
Sozin turned away, worrying his lower lip between his teeth, his grip tightening on Roku’s door. “Roku, I-”
“Wow, this place is awesome!” Gyatso crowed, narrowly missing bowling Roku over as he basically crashed into his back. “Hey, do I get a room too? Is it near Roku’s? Oooh can it be near that little pond I saw earlier? It’s got these turtle-ducks and-”
Sozin’s eyebrow ticked and he shot Gyatso a look that Roku had dubbed the ‘annoying teacher’ look when they were younger, reserved for prissy professors obsessed with dates. “Yes, I will see to it that you are given appropriate housing,” he forced through gritted teeth, removing his hand from Roku’s door and holding it behind his back. Roku tilted his head minutely, surprised—what had caused his mood to change so drastically?
“Cool!” Gyatso stopped using Roku as a wall and poked his head inside of his room, his eyes wide. “Woah, is this your room, Roku? It’s so fancy!”
Roku sighed, bringing a hand up to rub at his temples. Great Agni, Gyatso, calm down for once in your life. “I’m sorry, Gyatso can be very energetic. You come to love it, though. Now, what were you going to say?” He prompted, returning a smile to his face.
Sozin’s face froze and his shoulders tightened. “I… nevermind. It was stupid. I’m glad you’re back, Roku, and I’ll see you later,” he replied curtly. Then he turned around and walked off, one of his hands curled into a tight fist behind his back as the other gripped his wrist.

WIP Wednesday Thursday Friday!
tagged by the lovely @thesandsofelsweyr ♥
tagging @ftl-faster-than-life, @roipecheur, @enak-s, @waffleinator-inator, @vexic929 (I tagged at random no pressure & please everyone do this if you feel like)
Excerpt from the next chapter of Spellbound.
«Ravager, Willow and Jericho reporting for duty.» Grant announces, standing before Slade’s desk with his chin high and both arms behind his back. Rose and Joseph are right behind him. «The mission was a success, but if I may, we should plan the next steps very carefully. We collected some potentially concerning data.»
Rose is vaguely smiling, which is not concealed by the mask covering only half of her face. And her older brother has to somehow sense it given the slightly annoyed twitch of his wrist, but he doesn’t comment.
«Brief me about this concerning data, Ravager.» Slade replies as he quickly skims through the report he's just been handed.
Grant does, explaining in detail that there’s been finds of Element X, leading his team to speculate that there could be plans for another alien strike in the foreseeable future. He effortlessly skims over irrelevant snippets and produces pictures and samples of everything they considered worth taking note of, while Rose taps her foot and crosses arms on her chest, losing the upright stance and looking like she’d love to be out in the summer day. It is a beautiful day outside, to be fair. The Justice League Headquarters are bathed in light.
«The matter will be passed to more experienced members of the League.» Slade declares, albeit knowing the kids won’t be happy. «You did a good job so far and you will be assigned another soon. Unless…» He places down the report to eye his kids. «Unless you would like to enjoy the rest of your evening.»
Grant is looking defeated, Rose perks up, and Joey pulls down the upper part of his suit to uncover his face.
«Before this oaf says anything,» Rose starts, playfully pushing Grant out of the way. «Yes. Rest of the evening. Enjoying ourselves.»
«I suppose we’d like that, yes.» Joey adds before his older brother can complain. «Nice to see you, Pop. You should take a break and enjoy the nice weather as well.»
«Can I say my piece…?» Grant huffs, not pushing Rose back though. «I agree on not involving these two children in whatever the next steps are, but I’m experienced enough. And I possess first-hand information. It would make no sense to exclude me from the following operations.»
«That’s a good point.» Slade nods. He likes his eldest’s attitude, even if he could use a little less eagerness for his own good. «But some decisions aren’t mine to make. There is a protocol regarding high risk threats.» He does have an idea of making it so Grant gets involved this time around, so that Slade himself can supervise the next steps of his training, but he can’t say that to the kid. He’ll make it so it will look like another Leaguer decided it. «Taking breaks is part of the job anyway. As your brother suggested, I'm going to take one myself.»

20 Questions for Fic Writers
Mar tagged me in this. Thank you Mar <333
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
22
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
358,837
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Owls....for now and the foreseeable future. Other things in the past but....owls. Owls and nothing else.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
There's Sunshine in Your Smile
Atlas and the Avid Reader
A Little Change
An Exercise in Understanding
Girl Talk
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I don't, I'm sorry!! When I first started posting on ao3, I answered every comment I got, but as more came in, I realized I was running out of ways to respond and it felt like I was just copy and pasting "thank you so much omg!!!" again and again and it felt awkward and disingenuous. (I meant it tho!! I did!!)
Also I never have any idea how to respond to long essay type comments that were picking the fic apart and highlighting everything they like about it. I ADORE those comments!!! They make me happier than anything else on earth but HOW can I respond to them?? A one liner thanks feels cheap and meaningless, but a long ramble about my own stuff feels arrogant.
So I just stopped replying to comments altogether. But listen please listen!!! I do read them!!! I read every single one of them and I love and appreciate them with all my heart!!! Thank you so so SO much to anybody who's ever left a comment on anything I've written!!!
6. What’s the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
I don't really write angsty endings. I guess atlas and pages both ended on a bit of a bittersweet note? Maybe.
That one ducktales fic Fearless left off on a kinda angsty cliffhanger, only because I never finished it. So it's technically an ending
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Man I dunno most of them are kinda open ended (or unfinished) I suppose A Little Change ended on a sickeningly sweet note. Like disgustingly sweet (because I was 19 and stupid and had no concept of subtlety) Penniless Promises ended with a marriage proposal.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
No the only hate comment I've ever gotten is this one
Tumblr media
It kinda annoys me. I consider your first hate comment to be a special milestone in your fanfic writing history. I've been waiting years for this. And then I FINALLY get it but I have no fucking idea what it means.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
I've written bits and pieces over the years but I don't post any of it. I think the last "smut" I posted was weird werewolf knotting shit in like 2017
What kind? Fuckin uhhhhh. It's always very fluffy. Usually there's nothing weird going on. Sometimes there's monsters involved but the monsters are usually massive sweethearts who just want love.
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
No
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Yes. A few times. And it's always fucking wattpad. At one point, somebody put my fic through Google translate and reposted it in Spanish. I would have been completely unaware if somebody hadn't messaged me about it.
The process of getting them to take it down was a fucking circus. Their ability to use Google translate suddenly vanished the moment I contacted them.
Tumblr media
I reported it and had to go back and forth with Wattpad support because the fic was IN SPANISH, so they just kinda glanced at it and were like "This is not the same thing that you wrote. These are different words. Spanish words." I was losing my MIND!!!!!!
They took it down eventually. Anyway...sorry I went on a tangent, I just think this is a funny story. Moral of the story is there are probably several stolen fics on wattpad and run through translators, and we have no idea. There might be more of mine on there but honestly I do not have the energy to be monitoring the stupid site. I hate wattpad so much its unreal.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
As we have just learned from the above story, yes :D!!
But also yeah, some people asked permission to translate my stuff and post it with credit. Sunshine has been translated into Spanish and Ukrainian!
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
No I can barely manage to write them myself
14. What’s your all-time favourite ship?
Tumblr media
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?
Undocumented Events of March 23rd. I might update it at some point in the next five years. But I had so many chapters planned that it will probably never reach the ending at the pace I'm going with it. But I love the jungle book husbands. I get back to them at some point in time
16. What are your writing strengths?
Word disease is the worst fucking thing ever but it CAN be a good thing in some circumstances. A huge meaty chunk of a fic. Something to dig into. Having a lot to say can lead to a lot to write. And the more you write, the more likely you'll get some quality stuff in there.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
I repeat. Word disease is the worst fucking thing ever. And when it's coupled with a complexity addiction, UGGH!!! It's a blight on my life. I can't just write a simple straightforward fic, without getting carried away and the ideas just get bigger and bigger. Suddenly I'm implementing more elaborate concepts, scenes that need to be handled delicately. Everything takes absolutely all of my brainpower because I'm a neurotic overthinker who can never just RELAX and write something fun. And I WANT all of it. I want to execute all the plans that exist in my head but then I get overwhelmed by how big and complicated everything has gotten and I get burned out. Which is why things so rarely get done.
I'm a perfectionist. A horrible terrible one. I struggle to write ANYTHING without carefully constructing every individual line of it. Which makes progress so slow and tedious. I get scared to even START fics because I'm afraid I'll make myself feel awful again if they don't turn out good.
My grammar is very imperfect but I'm working on that.
I can be very unnecessarily wordy and take forever to get to the point. I've reread my own stuff and even I have difficulty following it because the sentences just have so many bells and whistles for no good reason. I completely forget a huge chunk of vocab and don't realize they are simpler way to phrase things.
My attempts at executing believable emotional scenes often fall kinda flat. Writing drama is hard but I'm amazed by some people's capability to master it so I'm chipping away at it, hoping to get better.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
I don't really have any thoughts at all about them. Literally none.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
I'd like to say it was Trolls but it was actually Hetalia when I was like 14. But I do everything within my power to distance myself from Hetalia, so I like to say it doesn't count. But....need to be honest.
20. Favourite fic you’ve ever written?
Currently, at this point that I am at, the ones I used to be the most proud of now feel like they were a waste of time. I'm sure that will change again in a few months. How I feel about my own stuff is never consistent. The way that this question is phrased implies a forever favourite. Something I loved then, I love now and will love in future, and that is just never the case.
But also I don't wanna be an Eeyore about it, so I'll say a trance, a dance, a romance perchance?
I really do love my fairy Willow. She's so special to me :D!!
Tagging: after writing this whole post, I now feel very weird tagging people specifically and being like "HEY YOU! Look at this post I made <33" This is like a don't look at me post. BUT I do have lots of writer mutuals. And writer followers. If you're one of them and you see this....you!!!! Tag youre it!!!!

Ugh, I really need to start actually appearing consistently on here... Time both passes by too quickly and crawls too slowly. It's confusing. But that's life for ya, I guess. Sorry if my constant disappearances are annoying and/or worrying.
First of all, I'm very sorry for your loss. Regardless of the relationship you two had, death is hard to deal with. I've also lost a family member several months ago and all I can offer you is the knowledge that it does get easier to accept as time passes, even if it still hurts. I hope your road to regaining inner peace and balance won't be too long and bumpy. Please stay strong and remember to take care of yourself, at least to the best of your abilities. Sending you virtual hugs, if you'd like them <3
On a lighter note, the drop rates in Nu:Kani are driving me up the wall. I both want to save my contracts for the next Eiden banner (which is a long ways off, yes, but I am still salty he refused to come home and will now expect that he will be stubborn until the very end each time) and am in desperate need of more SSR cards. Shielders and all-enemy attackers, specifically. So far I've pulled like 40 times on the Olivine/Yakumo banner and have gotten pretty much nothing, save for some SR shards. But at least I've progressed in the story chapters, currently slowly going through the Solaria one! Haven't actually read the stories just yet, but the desire to see my boys Garu and Karu is strong. I might come crying to you about them in the foreseeable future, because I'm a sensitive bitch and really want the pups happy and safe ;-;
— 💛
Time is an enigma and I don't like it. I need it to be Saturday forever. Specifically the Saturday right after a pay day. Everyday. Infinite money hack.
Thank you. I'm still not sure how I feel, but I am functioning. I'm not sad so much as I am in a stupor every now and again, but living my normal life is getting easier because of how little contact we've had in the last 10 years anyway. That's a plus, I guess?
I AM SHAKING NU:C! OLIVINE WON'T COME HOME! REI AND KUYA ARE UP NEXT! I AM SCREAMING AT THE DROP RATES HATING ME! I WAS TRYING NOT TO WHALE THIS TIME BUT I WILL HAVE TO AT HIS RATE! WHY ARE THE GACHA GODS SO CRUEL!!!!

HOLY SHIT!!! A lot of things happened in this chapter!!! Where do I start?!
1- Esmérelda is a b@#&!
2- Buttercup lost her powers TWICE!
3- Mike is bi! YAY! xD
4- Drama between the sisters! :(
5- Esmérelda is a bitch!!!
6- Him and Esmérelda are aware that Brick doesn't get affected by Esmé's influence!!! 😱
7- Poor Buttercup! My heart broke for her in this chapter! 😢
8- Butch is the best boyfriend Buttercup could ever asked for! 😭
9- ESMÉRELDA IS A BITCH!
10- Brick can see the future??! 😦
11- The Blues finally made up! YAY! xD
12- Blossom finally told her sisters about her heart attacks. I'm glad.
13- Brick started to put two to two together, but he's still not making a move!!! C'mon, Brick! Do something!!!
14- ESMÉRELDA IS A FUCKING BITCH!!!!
Phew! I think that's everything! xD You really know how to write villains, Madamefist! First, Melvin, now Esmé. Seriously, I'm starting to hate her more than Melvin. The Reds didn't get a lot of focus, but I was glad that Blossom told Brick about what the Professor said to her. My heart also broke when her sister ganged on her when Esmé accused her. It was really hard to read. :(
But I can't but just noticed Brick's new "ability" if you will call it that. He now can dream about the future? Can foresee the future? Similar to Him? Hmmmm... it's quite interesting, I have to say.
But man, the ending, with Him appearing and telling Esmé to kill Buttercup... I'm both scared and excited for the next chapter! This chapter was worth the wait for sure. But I do hope you update within a month, I really want to know what will happen next!!!
You take care now. 😄
Okay.. 1 - Yes, you are correct 😂 2 - Poor BC 😭 3 - Yay Mike 💖💜💙 4 - I think we need to refer to number 1 for this one.. I didn't enjoy writing them being horrible to each other I gotta admit! 5 - Yes, that is very true 6 - Yes - they know stuff Brick doesn't - wouldn't that annoy him! 7 - She's going through it.. You wait till the next chapter 🫠😬 8 - 😬😬😬 9 - STILL VERY TRUE. 10 - 🤔🤔🤔 11 - Yay blues 💙 12 - About time really..! 13 - He needs to trust his gut more doesn't he... 14 - YESSSSSSSSSSSS 😆 Thank you so much! I don't know what it says about me as a person being able to pull off writing evil well, but I'm gunna take it as a compliment either way 😏🤣 The reds will take centre stage soon - I worry about my fics being tooooo red sometimes. They are my favourites to write, but I do love the greens - struggle with the blues (but that doesn't mean I don't love them) - but gave myself a little personal goal to try & write them better/more in my Choices/Prophecy fics. I'll do my very best to get chapter 8 up within the month 🫶

Help, I ran Garden of Salvation with some clan mates and i'm Experiencing Great Sadness about the Kentarch 3 again.
I haven't been following you since shadowkeep, and was wondering if you had some theories about what happened, because a lot is left unexplained, specifically about Lisbon-13's motivations. The story from Yardarm-4's perspective shows that something is influencing them before they accept power (stasis teaser?) from the darkness. Do you think they really had a choice? Do you think he was influenced in his decision to kill them? If so, why? As a test just for him? Presumably he's still out there somewhere, and I can't tell from the lorebooks whether Rekkana let him kill her first or not. I just feel so bad for them, they all loved each other. Yardarm probably took the power in the first place to help get them out safely. Do you think it'll ever get concluded? The whole lore series seems interestingly close to what happens with Shayura, just sort of in reverse.
Kentarch 3 fireteam and the whole story on the Garden of Salvation armour and the associated weapons and equipment is amazing and very interesting, I agree. I haven't talked about it before but it's a good thing to revisit every so often! I think there's still a lot we don't really understand, mostly due to not fully understanding the power of the Black Garden.
In short for the general audience, Kentarch 3 was a fireteam that consisted of Yardarm-4 (Titan), Rekkana (Warlock) and Lisbon-13 (Hunter). They went to explore the Black Garden at the behest of the Warlock order called the Cryptochrons which Rekkana was a part of. This order got exiled some time after Osiris for dabbling in prophecies. Cryptochrons were formed around a Oneiromantic Circle and led by a Sibyl (or multiple sibyls; or Sibyl was just a name of one member, it's unclear). Oneiromancy is the practice of interpreting dreams to predict the future and sibyls were ancient Greek female prophets and oracles.
I didn't think this would get long but it did so the rest under the cut:
The Cryptochron order continued operating after its exile and Rekkana received a prophecy from them that revolved around a fireteam learning about the Black Garden and retrieving from it a Vex relic of some sort. The relic is the exotic weapon Divinity and the lore tab on it details the prophecy they were chasing:
"And after any other Cryptochrons they learn of. But your path is more dangerous than most. The Circle has foreseen many fireteams following in your footsteps. You can find the knowledge the order seeks at the Tree."
"Can? Not will?" For the first time, Rekkana sounded concerned.
"The Circle has had limited success in piercing the veil that surrounds the Black Garden, so the order offers no certainties. They say that a group of Guardians will discover secrets about the origin of the Black Garden at the Tree. The Oneiromantic Circle foresees no reason why it will not be the Kentarch 3."
"Nor can I. But…?"
"There is another thread in the tapestry, entwined with this one. The Vex, or some fractal faction of them, worship or honor a… divinity there."
"The Black Heart? It was destroyed."
"Yes, but this is something different. An object. Something like a sacred relic. It is important to the Vex for reasons that we have not yet fathomed. The Circle has determined that it is dangerous—"
"A Vex weapon?"
"Perhaps," the Sybil sounded annoyed at the interruption. "Rekkana, the Circle concluded that it is a danger to you."
"To me? But then, why send me on this mission?"
"When the Circle dreamed of the object, you were beside it."
They agreed that, should they find this object, Lisbon should be the one to carry it. They did find it and he was indeed the one to carry it, as is shown later in another lore tab detailed below.
We know that Lisbon-13 killed the rest of his fireteam because they got corrupted by the Black Garden, something happened to their Ghosts (they all just dropped down and started losing their Light) and then turned on him. He was being hunted and he really had no choice. But he couldn't live with it. In Beyond Light, he's shown trying to kill his Ghost in order to stay permanently dead because he couldn't bear the burden of what he did to his fireteam, even though his actions were justified and he acted in self-defence.
But before he managed to do that, he was faced with his own doppleganger, just like the YW at the end of Shadowkeep. In the end, Lisbon didn't kill his Ghost because the doppleganger offered him power and Lisbon (presumably) chose to take it: his wish was simply to make himself forget about his fireteam (and Rekkana specifically, whom he loved). It's implied that he accepted and after that, we have no formal information what happened.
The outcome of what happened to Kentarch 3 is somewhat known, as detailed in this ship lore. The Vanguard knows Lisbon killed the other two, they're not sure when they lost their Ghosts and they have not found anyone's body, not even Lisbon's. But we know from the lore that came out after that Lisbon accepted the deal with his doppleganger and we have no idea what that entailed. Is he still in the Black Garden? Was he killed? Replaced? Just memory-wiped and sent back? Something else entirely? We'll explore at the end.
I'm pretty sure the voices they heard talking to them were also their own dopplegangers. And it's somewhat implied that they made some sort of a bargain and accepted "new powers" that came "from the wrong side." There's only one description of it:
Her fist glimmered and quaked with an unfamiliar power. She only had to release her grip, and that energy would rip through him, burning without fire.
That's Rekkana attacking Lisbon. It's never fully explained what it is, but it could very well be some sort of prototype Stasis in my opinion. Or some other Darkness power. Not sure why the Black Garden would give them this, which is why I think they simply harnessed the power of their dopplegangers. This is something that's been mentioned a few times in regards to Darkness: duplication. Same is present with the Taken as well (Taken psions duplicate). I mentioned the duplication theme being discussed in Clovis' journal before too.
Honestly, I can't make any definitive conclusion, but Kentarch 3 definitely found something horrifying in the Black Garden and fell to its influence. They also reference doing the puzzles to get Divinity, which they got and Lisbon used it to kill the other two.
Garden of Salvation raid ends with a Pyramid scale opening up and leading us down into the area with the Darkness statue. I think this could've easily been some sort of a lead into the future of Destiny and the powers of Darkness. Kentarch 3 may have accidentally received this power early on or were perhaps some sort of a test the Darkness did on Guardians before offering them Stasis for real.
It's an interesting story and yep, it does mirror Shayura's fireteam and how the story is told! Each member of the fireteam tells the same story from their own POV on armour for that class. I'll link all of them in order, roughly how I think it's best to read each POV:
Rekkana: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 Yardarm-4: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 Lisbon-13: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
I like how the armour follows the same name pattern: Righteousness, Exaltation, Transcendence, Ascendancy and Temptation.
Associated Garden of Salvation weapons also have some tidbits of lore that might help, namely:
Ancient Gospel Hand Cannon:
"These forces have existed forever, but only one of them speaks to us." —Rekkana, Warlock of the Kentarch 3
Sacred Provenance Pulse Rifle:
"These gifts were not made for us, but we were meant to have them." —Rekkana, Warlock of the Kentarch 3
Zealot's Reward Fusion Rifle:
"Why not use these gifts we've been given?" —Yardarm-4, Titan of the Kentarch 3
I would really like to learn more about them, and specifically Lisbon because he might be able to actually tell us what happened. He or his Ghost, Piri, who managed to survive last we've seen her. I think the Ghost might be able to give the most accurate version of events. It's interesting that Lisbon was very much against whatever power they received and that was the reason he abandoned his fireteam, which made the other two consider him a traitor to their friendship.
Very intriguing lore story that could possibly be mentioned again in some form. Also as a brighter note, yes, Yardarm literally flew into the Black Garden with an entire ship and crash landed inside. On a less brighter note, we've never seen the remains of a ship in there (to be fair, Black Garden is huge) and it's somewhat implied that they entered through the Vex Gate on Mars which puts the timeline of when they got there into question. The Vex Gate on Mars that led into the Black Garden was destroyed in the Red War. The new gate showed up on the Moon in Shadowkeep (and you can't fly a ship into it because it's in a cave).
An additional note which answers certain things when it comes to Lisbon's fate that I hinted at before: in order to acquire the quest for Divinity, you have to go to the Moon to the Vex Gate for the first time. The gate will open up and a Vex mind will come out. This giant Vex minotaur is called Zeteon, Redemptive Mind. Upon killing this minotaur, you receive "Divine Fragmentation" quest. Details of the quest here. You pick up a Vex core that has strange readings coming from it and you have to decipher it by running it through various Vex technology. Once fully completed, you have to go into Garden of Salvation, do the Divinity puzzles and the weapon will drop from the extra chest at the end.
Why am I mentioning this? Well. Zeteon, Redemptive Mind drops a core that contains information about how to get Divinity. Lisbon was the member of the fireteam that held Divinity and used it to kill his fireteam. There's a quote from Lisbon on the weapon called Accrued Redemption:
"I should never have let it come to this. Now each arrow is a penance." —Lisbon-13, Hunter of the Kentarch 3
Divinity's perks are called Judgement and Penance.
Basically, I believe that whatever deal Lisbon accepted that made him forget his fireteam, free him from the suffering and redeem him ended with him being converted into Zeteon, Redemptive Mind. It's the reason why this Vex in particular had the pieces needed to construct Divinity again. Lisbon was the last person who had it. Becoming the bearer of parts needed for Divinity was both his Judgement and his Penance.
Final note because I love ancient languages being used for the names of things in Destiny: "Zeteon" most likely comes from Greek "zeteo" which means:
to seek, search after, look for
to inquire into, examine, consider
to strive for, desire, wish
Probably tied to Lisbon's search and desire for redemption for what he's done. I think that wraps up his fate quite nicely, although tragically.

There’s a warm spring just outside the monastery. It’s hidden in the mountain, a few miles away from the castle walls and yet you find that it’s too close for comfort.
Every bright and loud fanfare that announces the prince’s coming and leaving echoes off of the hills and pours through your peaceful respite. It’s just enough to make you grumpy.
It’s one of those mornings again, and you find yourself floating in the hot spring, eyes open towards the sun, wishing you had more patience with the dear prince you call your best friend.
Your robe is heavy across your torso, floating around your bare legs as you ponder your plans for today. That is, if the prince doesn’t come visit you.
That would be wishful thinking, though. You don’t have to close your eyes to know that someone has blocked the sun. With a sigh, you sink your body beneath the warm water and submerge, blinking the water off of your lashes. “Alex, this is sacred ground.”
“I know,” the prince replies, squatting down to see you. “I tied my boots around my neck, see?”
You stare at the boot he’s proudly holding up, then shift your eyes to his bare feet. “Why are you here? This is my day off.”
“Excuse me for wanting to see my best friend,” Alex sneers mockingly, rolling his eyes. “Listen, are you coming back to the castle tomorrow?”
“We literally have an augury lesson at one in the morning,” you say. “So, yes.”
“Good, I’m going to disprove all of your theories.”
“They aren’t theories, Alex. I read patterns for a living, alright? I know what I’m talking about.”
“It’s not science.”
“Neither is your father deifying your grandfather,” this time you mock him.
He holds a steady gaze, lips quirked into a cheeky smile. “You’ll tell me about the night of my coronation again, right?”
“Because it warned of extreme change,” you say, voice level. “Yet I can’t figure out what’s going to happen. There’s something the stars aren’t telling me, and I have to figure it out to protect you and the kingdom.”
Alex’s eyes are a deep brown that you could probably get lost in, if he wasn’t such a little shit. “Protect me, you say?” He’s flirting now, eyes alight with the thought of annoying you, and if this spring wasn’t so important to you, you would’ve yanked him in already. “Didn’t know you cared that much about me, Y/n.”
Your robes are clinging uncomfortably to your body, accentuating the lines and curves — or lack thereof. “Hand me my towel and look away please.”
Alex closes his eyes and turns his face away, holding out the towel. “Learn anything divine from your swimming trip?”
Alex holds the towel out like a makeshift screen, and averts his eyes while you dry off and change into the clean robe he brought you. As annoying as he is, the prince is thoughtful, and he fills in the places where you lack.
“I was reflecting,” you say, buttoning the front of the robe. “It’s good for you; clears out your soul.”
Alex tosses the towel over your head and ruffles your hair. He chuckles at your protests; taunts you with warmth in his eyes. “You’re so spiritual.”
You glare at him. “I’m an augur.”
“Right,” Alex says, holding the now-wet towel close to his chest. “But you take it so seriously, sometimes.”
“I hate you,” you say, no venom in your words.
“I love you, too,” Alex says. He leans forward, almost as if to kiss your forehead, and then remembers that you’re on sacred ground, and kissing is forbidden.
Still, the very thought of what he might’ve done sends an unwanted flutter throughout your chest.

Wax drips onto the closed letter. You dip the silver stamp into the dark purple puddle, leaving the royal seal behind.
Inside is a letter to your family. It’s a prophecy you’ve received just for them. Despite them disowning you for your gift, you still find it important to warn them of upcoming woe. Like now, for instance, when you wish to warn them about the upcoming rainstorm that could ruin their crops if they don’t take precautions.
You rub your temples and blow out the candle, leaving you in silent darkness.
Your room is on the highest tower of the castle. The turret is small; a circular room with a circular bed and a circular desk and a glass, circular ceiling that showcases the stars to you each night. There’s a telescope standing against the window, a chest for your clothes, and the writing desk you’re seated upon. However, your bathroom is a few stories down, near the bottom of the tower and closer to accessible plumbing.
The door behind you bursts open, and you know it’s the young prince and his lack of basic manners when it comes to privacy. Your privacy, anyway. “What is it, Alex?”
“I’ve been waiting for you in the tower for an hour now, silly,” Alex’s words get softer as the light from the corridor pours in, and he can see what you’ve been up to. He stills, smile faltering. “You had another vision of them.”
“I wish they would stop,” you mutter. If you clench your eyes tightly enough, you can will any tears to suck back into your head. Then you can suffer through a headache, like you always do. You’ve had this “gift” since you were a little kid; you know the ups and downs of using it.
Not that it gives you much choice sometimes.
“Are you drinking the–“
“No,” you snap at Alex. “Look, suppressing them only makes it worse. Prophecies become... darker. I see things I can’t unsee. I have to allow them through.”
Alex has a hurt look on his face, but you can’t tell if it’s because you snapped at him or because he doesn’t want to see you in pain. You selfishly hope it’s the latter.
“We can talk about something less harsh on the mind.” Alex sits on your chest, avoiding your bed. It’s another sacred place for you, same as the monastery grounds. Alex knows the rules of being a seer; the ancient laws you practice. He’s read the same books as you — if just to understand you better. He’s the most loyal friend you can think of: the only person in the entire kingdom who has never questioned your beliefs.
“I can’t stand the thought of them getting hurt,” you admit. “And with the vision about your coronation... I’m so scared this kingdom is going to crumble and it’s going to be because I couldn’t prevent it.”
Alex fiddles with his necklace. It’s a rune, one for protection. You used to wear a similar one beneath your robes, but with your fear of something happening, you’ve made Alex promise to wear it.
“It’s not your job to keep the kingdom from crumbling,” Alex relays. “All you need to do is tell me what you see. Then I hint to my father ways to change the kingdom. After that, it’s up to fate.”
You bite your lip. “Fate has a tricky way of playing its own hand.”
“Then it was never in your hands in the first place, yes?” Alex speaks honestly, but there’s a bit of cheek to his voice that eases your nerves.
You smile sadly. “Your father is too prideful, Alex. I can see it; the ravens, they flock the castle whenever he makes a speech. He wants to become a god. He wants something that’s impossible.”
“He deified Grandfather,” Alex quips, no emotion backing his voice. “Like you said earlier. It’s just to start the tradition, so that when he dies he’ll become holy, too.”
“I told him it was wrong. I told him that the stars foresee ruin if he stays on this trail of pride.” You cast your eyes down to your family’s letter. “No one believes me.”
“I believe you,” Alex’s soft voice urges you to look at him.
He’s quiet. The rune is resting on his outstretched palm and he’s looking at you. “Do you think I’d take these lessons and wear these trinkets if I thought you were wrong?”
“Maybe you do it because we’re friends,” you say. You're well aware of the fact that the prince is the only person in the entire kingdom who advocates for your beliefs. But with the rest of the realm against you, you can't help but think that deep down, he's making fun of you, too.
"You sure do worry a lot for someone who can foresee the future."
You choke out a laugh and run your hands down your face. "I'm sorry, Alex. I'm so sorry. I just– I feel like if I can't prevent every bad thing I predict, then it's my fault when they happen. I wish I was ignorant to omens."
Alex tuts. He pouts at you, dragging his lower lip between his teeth and holding it there for just a beat too long. “Let’s skip lessons today. You should rest.”
“Alex—“
“Ah!” Alex stands up. He begins to unclip his cufflinks from the hem of his sleeve before he passes you a coy glance. “That’s Prince Alexis to you, and if I say you should rest, then you should rest.”
You grumble, but inwardly you’re thankful.

There’s an altar, rectified in the middle of the castle courtyard. Though it was once a place of healing — a place seers would go to cleanse their minds — it is now standing in ruins.
You lay down your offerings anyway. Dried rose petals, and a few copper coins saved up. You wait with the objects until a few crows come to diligently take them away. To where? You don’t know. You’ve never asked.
Alex’s father plans to take down the altar and replace it with a shrine of himself. The knowledge of change reeks the air with a foul scent only you can smell.
It’s as if the entire kingdom is rotting and you’re the only one who knows.
You lift your hood off of your face and continue your walk throughout the court. Those you pass politely ignore you, though some choose to sneer at your mannerisms. The king has them wrapped in his prideful rule, and your heart aches for them.
There is no freedom in serving man. This much, you know.
You find yourself in the tower, waiting for the prince to come in time for his lessons.
“Father says he wants me to study more practical subjects,” Alex relates to you.
He’s lying across the balcony floor, and you are perpendicular, with your head on his stomach. You feel every breath he takes, and something about the closeness comforts you in a way you refuse to analyze.
“I’m not sure what else you could learn,” you say. Your eyes are stuck on a chip in the balcony railing. Stone that hardly cracks, and of course your foundation is crumbling quicker than your resolve. “You have lessons from dawn till dusk.”
“And you’re the only tutor I care for,” he says with a flippant sort of tone. “I don’t know what I’d do if I saw you less. I already wish I had more time with you.”
You’ve spoken to nuns and monks and those who swear off love in servitude to the one they worship. Most admit that it’s a lonely existence, and a torture to make up for their sins. You understand that true love must be as sacred as an old god, and to worship another person would be the greatest act of devotion. For how else do you serve a creator than by worshiping the created?
You don’t think kings are meant to be worshipped. No one with that much power should be revered with such ignorance.
But a prince is different. To worship a prince alone, in secret, for just yourself... perhaps that is the most spiritual devotion of all. Perhaps it is the most torturous.
Hearing Alex’s words makes your heart yearn for a future that can never be. You don’t need a vision to tell you that his father will soon grow tired of you. Of course you will soon be sent out of the kingdom, and Alex will forget about you in time.
You know this without a doubt in your heart, and yet Alex still clings to these moments with you.
You’d do anything to keep him safe.
“Where will I go?” You ask. “Where will I be accepted?”
Alex’s breath hitches; you feel it. And you know what he wants to say — you know what lingers at the tip of his tongue.
With me.
Tumblr media
Your family sends back the letter, unopened. You try not to cry about it, but the truth is that you feel more alone than ever. Surely you are the last of your kind, and no one cares in the least about what you have to say.
Except maybe Alex. Lovely, beautiful Alexis. He could no sooner harm a butterfly’s wing than deny you your beliefs.
But Alex is not king. He is merely a prince, and the king does not like you. It’s a miracle you’ve lasted this long.
“You fill my son’s head with nonsense,” the king paces back and forth in front of his empty thrown.
You hide your hands in the sleeves of your robe. “Your Majesty, I only relay what I see. I fear your kingdom is in danger.”
“And you think it my fault? Tell me, what if the stars told me to deify my father? What if I am following my own visions?” The royal cackles. “You have no sensible argument. All you have are silly dreams and lies to propel your own agenda. I will not have you spoiling my son’s brain.”
“Your Majesty—“
“I forbid you to speak on anything of the sort from hence forth. The altar will be torn down, and any peep from you regarding these readings will result in instant banishment.”
The sentence hurts more than it should, considering you aren’t being willed to die. You’re quite lucky in this sentence, considering you can still see Alex. Though, a part of you cracks and splinters to think of suppressing your visions.
The vision of Alex’s coronation still remains. You fear for the prince’s life. You fear the king will have something to do with it.
How do you tell the boy you adore that his father may be his downfall?
How do you get him to believe you?
Tumblr media
The warm spring only gets hotter as the seasons change. You sink your head under, and the heat of the water burns your closed eyelids. Your head is killing you; pounding from holding back your emotions: your tears.
The monks don’t even worship the same as you. They lend you their springs and advice, but they aren’t the same. There are no other augurs in The Rapids, so no one else really knows how taxing the job is.
More visions come to you when you’re stressed, so you try your hardest to calm yourself. The water scalds your skin, but it distracts your mind enough to keep the visions away.
It’s all the same. All the visions are the same — Alex gets crowned king and overturns the deifying decree. And only days later, he’s assassinated, and the regent — his father — takes back the throne.
As the old proverb goes: pride cometh before a fall, and the king certainly has enough pride. You just don’t want Alex to get caught in the fall.
“You’re so predictable.” Alex’s voice is warbled.
It takes a minute for the water to release from your ears.
Surfaced, you can see Alex crouched by the bank, careful not to fall in. He’s got that same gentle smile — thin, rouge lips and eyes that seem to shine when they look at you. Alex never judges. He never makes fun of your methods. He’s simply there for you, and your heart longs to be there for him as well.
“This place is sacred,” you blurt. Seeing Alex’s face in the light of the sunset just makes you think of your visions. What would a world without Alex even look like? You aren’t sure you want to find out.
You start to cry, and Alex holds a hand out silently.
He helps you out — holds out the robe for you. His boots are around his neck, and you focus on the thinness of his ankles while you clothe yourself.
“You can’t hold me.” You say plainly.
“I know,” Alex’s voice is watery. “Let’s get you back to the palace, yeah?”
“Yeah,” you sniff. “Okay.”
Tumblr media
“I’m not dead.” Alex lightly scratches your arm. Up and down. Up and down. “I’m not going to die.”
Your shoulders are braced against his side. You keep your gaze on the white smoke rising off of his incense cone.
This is his room, and his bed, because those aren’t sacred. His bed can be slept in and snuggled in and kissed in and loved in. He has scratchy cotton sheets and incense that is too old to really smell like anything.
He’s a prince with messy documents surrounding his desk and curtains that haven’t been dusted in days. Some days you wonder if the entire castle has forgotten about him. You don’t want to bring it up — don’t want to ask — but it flummoxes you.
You reach for his hand and stop its motions. “I’m sorry I bring you into all of this.”
“I want you to bring me into everything,” Alex slurs. He’s staying awake for you, and you know it. He rests his temple against your head. “I don’t want you to keep anything from me.”
You hum. His body is warm against yours. Too warm, to the extent where you know you’ll wake up in the uncomfortable sort of sweat that comes when a child falls asleep on you, or when you fall asleep without the window open.
Something heavy squeezes your chest. It feels like your ribcage is sentient — hugging and pressing into your lungs until it’s nearly impossible to breathe without an uncomfortable stutter.
Alex falls asleep quick, so you don’t worry about him noticing.
You settle against him and breathe through your nose. The feeling will pass — it always does. You feel this way whenever Alex reveals something so vulnerable to you. You reckon it’s something to do with the tenderness of his voice, or the earnest squeeze of his hand.
There’s a need to protect him. You want to be there for him, more than anything else in the world.
Tumblr media
Stripped of your job — the altar torn down — you resort back to your first and foremost activity: Alex’s best friend and (unofficial) advisor.
In this position, you’re confident in your abilities. You know just as well as anyone that you’d rather die than see the prince harmed in any way.
You’re kicked out of the tower, and your telescopes are left to dust. The king locks the door personally, ardent in his attempt to keep you away from any visions that might harm his reign.
You stay in Alex’s room, on a spare bed mat near the fireplace.
Of course, Alex has offered his bed, but you refuse to bother him any more than you have to. And now, with your rituals forbidden, you need a place to privately gather your thoughts.
The flames lick the stone furnace and you lie still. You watch them dance and close your eyes, hoping to rest without any visions or nightmares.
But the nightmares come, and they’re always the same.
When you wake in a fervent sweat, you know that only one thing will keep you from fearing Alex’s death. So, you crawl beneath his scratchy sheets.
You don’t snuggle into him or bother his slumber. All you need to do is know that he’s here. You rest your smallest finger against his bare arm and fall asleep to the sound of an owl hooting outside the window.
Tumblr media
On the morning of Alex’s coronation, fog rises from the earth. You see it as a sign: this day will be confusing and blurred.
Alex is just excited to have cooler weather. The blistering heat has been plaguing the kingdom for days, so to have a day of fog and hollow wind sounds like heaven to the prince.
You wear your runes beneath your robe, and the weight of them is less than the weight of knowing you’re dead if you’re caught. But you need them; need this day to come and go without blood and tears.
Alex cannot see you. He’s far too busy with final rehearsals and receiving guests from far and wide.
You stray beyond the castle, into the square, where traders and travelers have set up shop in the hopes of making a profit.
There’s a sign. Fortunes Read Here. It’s tacked over a purple curtain, and you can see amber light shining through a thin slit. Like maybe someone is in there. Like maybe you aren’t alone.
You walk in.
Disappointment smacks against your ribs like a heavy wave against jagged rocks. It’s a scam. A boy no younger than yourself is sitting behind a table, with a green sash tied over his forehead. There’s a mystical rune of some kind that looks like a portal, and it’s tacked to nearly every surface you can see with dripping green paint. The place looks like that of a madman, and you fear you’re about to be mocked.
“Hello,” he says. He doesn’t offer a name. The blues of his eyes flicker from time to time with a shimmery purple, and you think it’s a trick of the light.
“Are you going to laugh at me?” You sit across from him. “Once I leave, are you going to think of me as just another gullible customer?”
“Can you not tell the future?” He says, and he grabs the crystal ball and tucks it under the table. “I can sense it. You want answers, genuine answers, not some promise of success.”
“Who are you?”
“Karl,” he says. “I’m from the village of The Rapids, but you know, magic is looked down upon. I doubt anyone would believe me if I told them what I know.”
You trace the lines of the rune. Your brain fogs, but as you repeat the motion, it clears up, and you suddenly see Karl, clear as day, standing in a crowd and watching Alex make a speech. “You’ve been there? You’ve been to the future?”
“Look closer,” Karl mumbles.
So you focus on the details, and you can see the black banners of mourning, and the redness of Alex’s eyes. “Oh. This is his grandfather’s funeral. This is the year before I became Alex’s tutor.”
“Walk closer.”
Unsure what he means, you continue to trace the rune, and imagine yourself walking through the crowd. Only Karl moves instead, so you pause your tracing and look at Karl.
He’s got his eyes closed, and his eyebrows furrowed. “Why did you come here? What did you want to see?”
You brought me here, you think of saying, but you wonder if this is what Karl can do. If he can travel to the past and show people what he sees. “I- I suppose I want to know why he was deified. Was it a plot?”
You trace the rune again, and Karl walks over to the king, where he stands apart from the podium. Even though his son is giving a heartfelt speech, he’s not listening at all. Instead, he’s talking to one of his trusted advisors.
“I will make a wonderful god.”
“Prince Alexis hates the new creed,” the advisor observes. “Surely he’ll overrule it once he is king.”
“Yes,” the king says. “Well, I suppose we’ll just have to make sure that doesn’t happen.”
You gasp, and even Karl seems winded as you stop tracing the rune.
He places his palms on the table. “So that’s what you wanted to find out. A regicide plot.”
“I have to find Alex,” you mutter. You stand and rip one of your runes off of your neck. Intuition. “Here, take it. You should go.”
“I can’t go into the future,” Karl warns. “I don’t know what’s going to happen.”
“No,” you think of Alex’s words. “None of us can predict fate. I have to go.”
You run out of the tent, and when you look back, it’s gone, left with nothing but a dirty sign labeled Fortunes Read Here.
Perhaps it’s past tense now.
Tumblr media
Your purple robe billows behind you as you rush into the castle in search of the prince.
The staff says they haven’t seen him, the lords are already drunk off of mulled wine. His own tailors are running around, fearing they won’t be able to dress him in time.
So he’s gone, and that means you’re too late.
Or rather, maybe Alex is smarter than you give him credit for, and he’s gone to the one place his father won’t go.
You head up to the tower.
He’s there. Of course he’s there. And he’s in only part of his ceremonial clothes, leather pants and a cream-white collared shirt. He’s leaning his palms against the stone railing and staring out against the wind, like he’s waiting for it to speak to him. Tears slip down his cheeks and drop into the air.
“Alex…” You wrap your arms around his soft waist, squeezing tight to try and convey how thankful you are that he knew to get away. “Your father… He’s—”
“He poisoned my breakfast,” Alex whimpers. He grabs blindly for your arms, and at the touch of your skin, he folds in on himself; shifts around to face you, and buries his face into your neck. “My taster… He thought my taster was out. But he wasn’t. Now he’s dead, and the counsel are trying to figure out what to do with my father.”
“Alex, I’m so sorry.”
He cries harder, and you think your hug must feel weak compared to the comfort he so clearly needs right now. “I have to go tell the lords and the staff. We have to postpone the coronation until everyone involved is apprehended.”
You think of what he does when you feel alone. He visits your spring, and he takes off his shoes. He takes you to his bed and scratches your arm. He kisses your head and hums old lullabies from his childhood until you fall asleep.
So you grab his hand, and you pull him down the few stairs where your old bedroom lies. And you bring him toward your bed, but he stops you.
“It’s sacred to you,” he hiccups.
“You’re sacred to me,” you finally decide, and you let him crawl under your sheets.
You untie his boots and pull them off of his feet, along with his socks. Then you take the blanket and pull it up to his chin. You kiss his forehead and crawl in next to him. And you scratch his arm, up and down, and you hum old lullabies from your own childhood until he falls asleep.
While he’s asleep, you trace the moles across his cheeks and close your eyes. Suddenly, it’s like Karl’s tent, only you can see into the future, not the past. And you aren’t Karl, you’re Y/n.
The sun is bright on Alex’s back, skin tanned and warm. You’re swimming with him in the spring, and all that is sacred to you is him. All that matters is him, so he can float in the spring, and he can kiss you on holy ground, and if he can’t be deified in the kingdom, he can be deified in your soul.
And when you stop your motions, you’re back in your bed. Alex is there, sweet Alex, snoring softly and snuggling into your warmth, like you keep him safe. Like your visions aren’t the ones he believed in at all.
He has always believed solely in you.

i was thrilled to see your post about the new TMWFTE because it is indeed hard to find other people who have read the book or even know about it since it's not that popular. i mean it can't be exactly unpopular if there's several film adaptions of it but it's not like harry potter books that you can find from basically any bookstore in almost every country. i live in finland and i had to do some serious work to get my hands on a copy.
when i first watched the 1976 movie i didn't know about the novel and i was just very confused but also intrigued. when i found out that the movie was "based" (i put that in quotations because apparently nicolas roeg wasn't even going for a movie adaption of the novel but rather took inspiration from it and did his own thing) on a novel i was basically obsessed with finding a copy and reading it. now it's been a few years since i last read the book so i can't remember all the details but i do remember absolutely loving it and i should read it again to refresh my memory.
in a way i do understand filmmaker's need to put their own spin on things but i don't understand why they can't do so within the existing plot and characters. like write your own damn story if you're not going to even loosely follow the plot of the source material.
and YES it is so frustrating to watch the 1976 movie because bowie is absolutely perfect for the role! i don't mind the movie in itself because it's a weird 70's flick which is right up my alley but after reading the novel and knowing what it could have been it gets a lot harder to accept nicolas roeg's creative decisions. the cookie scene IS hilarious tho. 😂 i actually really like the aesthetics of the movie but i might be a bit biased because i love 70's style so much. i totally agree with you about the anthean costume design. i think it looks cool and surprisingly modern even by today's standards.
holy shit this is getting so long i'm sorry. 😅 just one more "quick" question: if someone gave you a bunch of money and told you to make a new TMWFTE movie what would you do? like who would you cast and what kind of music and locations would you use etc.?
btw after a very quick google search it seems that the 80's version is a tv movie and not series. sorry my bad!
Okay I have way too much to say so I'll put it under a cut
I remember when I was searching for the book I wasn't even able to find one until they just happened to re-release it in 2017 and I got lucky. I did this weird thing where the first time I read half the book, watched the movie, and then finished reading it, so I think if I had just watched the film first I would probably hate it less, but who knows. Last month I reread the novel so it's still pretty fresh in my head - the movie I haven't seen for years though.
I didn't know that Nic Roeg's intention was just to make an "adaptation", so that does explain a lot, but idk I just think that's annoying. I think the movie is inaccurate enough that they could have just written any story without attaching the novel's name to it but whatever. The problem is that the changes they made just make no sense and I'm going to rant about why.
The main plot in the novel is that Newton comes to Earth to build a spacecraft that will travel to Anthea and bring the rest of his people back. They destroyed their planet, wiped out two other species (which is never even touched on at all even though I thought it was one of the most interesting parts of the book), only about three hundred Antheans are left so there’s really no saving it anyway. Then, the plan was for the Antheans to live amongst the humans and attempt to help them with their superior technology and intellect in the foreseeable nuclear war. In the movie they change it to Newton building a spacecraft to take water back to Anthea which never made any sense to me. Because like… eventually the water would run out again right? What’s their future plan, to just keep siphoning water from Earth until neither planets have any left? Doesn’t sound like a good plan from what’s supposed to be an extremely intellectual species. It just makes no sense to change it.
And I don't think the characters are interesting/like-able enough for you to get really attached to them. Apart from Newton, we know practically nothing about any of the other characters. All we know about Bryce is that he’s divorced (in the novel he was a widower) and has a daughter and that he’s a fucking creep. All we know about Mary Lou is that she used to ride on trains as a kid and that she has no problems with fucking a married man. Mary Lou is just annoying. Not a single thing her character does improves the story or makes me want to watch it. She’s whiny, all she cares about is herself and drinking, she throws fits for no reason. She’s a mess, there is just nothing enjoyable about her at all. And why change her name? I don't understand the point of that. The only reason she’s there is for the romance plot-line - which, again, adds nothing and wasn’t in the book at all. Betty Jo in the novel was Newton’s housekeeper and friend, there’s no reason to add her as a love interest WHEN HE HAS A WIFE AT HOME HOLY SHIT. Betty-Jo takes interest in Newton, but it’s evident he either doesn’t notice or doesn’t care so she doesn’t try to pursue it any further. The romance and sex scenes were just pointless fan service - an excuse to see David Bowie’s dick and that’s it. (Also how does Newton even have human sex in the first place when his genitals are artificial? I never got that either).
When it comes to Bowie's acting, he doesn’t pull off the wry, almost witty side of Newton at all. In the book Newton could have an attitude. He talked back to the doctors experimenting on him. He could keep up in a conversation. The only part of Newton Bowie really plays into is the mysterious, other-worldly aspects of him, but of course he pulls that off well because that’s just how David Bowie is whether he’s playing a character or not. I need more from his acting, more from the character, otherwise he doesn't give me much reason to sympathize with him at the end of the movie. I'm more sorry for the rest of his people than what happened to him.
Nathan Bryce is almost as unlikable as Mary-Lou, which doesn’t make any of his scenes enjoyable to watch either. And he betrays Newton too?? What was the point of that? His interest in the novel was in figuring out what Newton was up to, whether his suspicions on him being an alien or not were true, and making sure Newton wasn't planning on taking over Earth. He’s a great character in the book, pretty much the only other friend to Newton besides Betty Jo, and the movie just ruins it completely. Like, almost all of the characters are intolerable, so it doesn't make the movie enjoyable at all. I think if the script had actually been written well and the characters flushed out a little more beyond like one whole personality trait a piece (if that) then all of the actors probably would have done a significantly better job.
In the tags of my last post @silver-fawnx added this and I wanted to touch on that while I'm at it because it can serve as a good conclusion to my ranting lmao.
Tumblr media
As to why people love this movie so much I genuinely think if it didn’t have David Bowie, this movie wouldn’t be that memorable at all nor would it have become a cult classic. Because, really, what about this movie stands out beyond David Bowie? It’s certainly not what Rip Torn or Candy Clark are most remembered for. It’s not like it had a mind-blowing soundtrack or revolutionary cinematography or anything. It’s a bizarre, poorly-written seventies sci-fi that happens to star David Bowie and that’s about it. If anyone else played Newton it wouldn't have been nearly as iconic. Or I could be being way too harsh and completely wrong, I don't know, it's just my thoughts on it.
Now I'll answer your question sorry I kind of went off there. If I were to make my own version of TMWFTE, I think I'd probably have most of the filming be done in Kentucky for the authenticity. For the scenes in Anthea I'd choose some cold, barren area like the arctic deserts in Greenland. I'd get Brian Eno to do some weird ambient music for the score.
Casting is hard though, because all the people I'd want to cast are way out of age range. I had a hard time deciding this and I'm still not 100% sold on my choices but: For Betty Jo, if I were making it thirty years ago I'd go with Kathy Bates, but she's too old now, so instead maybe Melissa McCarthy. For Bryce I'd go with Jude Law. For Newton I'd pick Australian actor Kodi Smit-McPhee (who I honestly never heard of before today but he looks like he fits the physical description really well). For Farnsworth... idk Danny DeVito maybe.
I'd focus way more on the Antheans and their culture. Like how they function (the novel talks about how Newton's digestive system works, how he can only eat certain things, how he can handle cold temperatures because Anthea is farther from the sun, how the difference in gravity ways him down, I just think things like that would be interesting to focus on). I'd have far more of it take place on Anthea, like maybe we could see more of the aliens beyond Newton and his family, explore a little on the past wars that they had in the, or on Newton preparing for his journey to Earth. Like stuff about how the Anthean society used to work compared to what is barely left of it by the time the story starts; I think that would be cool. Also, I'd show more of Newton’s patents/inventions and how they work. And, finally, I would absolutely make sure the scene where Newton dips his fake fingernails in some water solution and then claps them off is in the movie. Idk I just always thought that part was so interesting.
Thank you for (once again) letting me rant about all this, I needed it 😂

You (Part 2)
Now you see me, now you don’t!
Part 1 | AO3
Felix Graham De Vanily was, in his own humble opinion, special.
He was smart.
He was composed.
He knew exactly what to say and when, and he could make people see exactly what he wanted them to see.
He wasn’t his cousin, after all, almost identical looks aside. Adrien never knew when to speak up, or when it was better to stay quiet. Never knew how to hide his thoughts and keep his - utterly unrealistic, when it came to his father - hopes in check. And he might be smarter than Felix gave him credit for, but all that intelligence left him as soon as his friends were concerned.
That was what all his flaws boiled down to, really.
Adrien made the fatal, unforgiving mistake of caring too much. Always had.
(It was what Felix liked about him, deep down. Adrien was genuine, in everything he felt. Felix envied him for the ease with which he made friends.)
But.
Felix wasn’t like Adrien at all. He was too smart to care for people - his mother aside - any more than he had to. Mundane distractions. Friends, crushes - all things that would only deter him from his path in life: high above the crowd, always the center of attention, yet unreachable. Playing everyone, but gone before anybody noticed.
It was a glorious but lonely road. No, scratch that. It was a lonely but glorious road. Much better.
He didn’t need anything or anyone.
He was the sole and solemn genius of the family.
He was a magician, who didn’t need any fancy jewelry to work miracles - just the right distraction and disguise.
He was-
“Ow!”
Groaning Felix looked at the little bite marks on his finger.
“Were you even listening?! Or did you just wait for an opportunity to stab me in the back?”
The black and white bundle of fur and betrayal on his lap meowed and swiped at his hand, now out of reach.
“I knew you couldn’t be trusted.”, he grumbled and shoved the traitor off of his legs, but couldn’t help but smile when he smugly licked his nose - as if to say: I'd do it again. “I raised you too well. Now, where was I?”
He sighed.
“Ah, yes. I don’t care for anyone - please stop scratching that ear, honey, it’s not healed yet - because I'm just too smart for that. So it’s utterly impossible that I, Felix Graham de Vanily, am in love with Dupain-Cheng. Got it?”
His cat, the little bastard, answered by knocking his pencil box over and started to chew on a pen. Felix narrowed his eyes.
“Oh? You dare doubt my word?”
With quick fingers he stole his cat's spoils and placed it out of his reach.
“Quite bold for a creature without opposable thumbs, hm?”
Insulted, the poor, thumbless pet retreated to his laptop and laid down on the keyboard - causing the screensaver to give way to the last opened tab. Which was Marinette's Instagram page.
“Wah!”
Hurried to hide the proof of his interest - as if she might somehow appear in his room if he looked at her picture for too long - he shooed his pet away and closed the tab. Said pet meowed smugly and, upset about being chased away from two spots already, sat down on his pillow. Great.
“You did that on purpose!”, he accused his cat. “But that tab proves nothing. It was merely a passing interest in her admittedly wearable work. It has nothing to do with any confessions - faked confessions, or that she can apparently recognize me in disguise, or the very neutral fact that she is cute, by some people's - not my own! - standards.”
His cat blinked. And sneezed onto his pillow.
“Bless you. Now move, or I’ll use you instead of a bunny for that hat trick I’m working on.”
Sighing, Felix let himself fall backwards onto his bed, grabbing the fleeing cat and burying his face in the fluffy fur.
“Oh, to be a cat!”, he wailed into his involuntary comfort pillow. “With no troubles except how to best annoy his owner.”
The poor animal hissed and escaped his grasp, saving himself from the bitter fate of a comfort pillow.
“Run, you uncaring monster.”, Felix sighed, “Leave me to my worries. Which don’t include Marinette at all, by the way.”
He sat up and watched as the little traitor turned to sulk on his dresser.
“Stop looking at me like that. Even if I had a short bout of interest - possibly even infatuation! It’s already all but cured.”
He nodded to himself, ignoring that the disinterested cat had begun cleaning his leg instead of listening.
“School's closed, after all!”, he hummed, scrolling through the news on his phone. “And social contacts are to be reduced to the bare minimum. So I’m not going to see her again before this passing interest has... well, passed.”
As if in response to his words, his laptop started to ring and the monitor lit up with the picture of blue, blue eyes and a smile that could melt the stars off of the sky. Not that he paid attention to such things.
“Oh no, no, no!”, he panted as he fell out of his bed and stumbled towards the computer. “Incoming Skype call?! Oh, come on!”
The ringtone repeated itself and Felix jumped.
“What am I gonna do? What am I gonna do?”
Panicking, he looked at his pet.
“What the fuck am I supposed to do?!”
The addressed party blinked. And went back to licking his nuts.
“Argh! I am surrounded by incompetence!”
Taking a deep breath, Felix straightened his vest and cravat - just because he was staying at home for the foreseeable future didn’t mean that he would dress any less professionally.
“Who needs your advice anyway. I can do this.”
He straightened his back and sat down on the chair in front of his desk.
“I am Felix Graham de Vanily, the best actor in all of France and the United Kingdom, not in love with Marinette Dupain-Cheng, and I can totally answer a Skype call.”
Before he could think again, he pressed the green button.
“Mademoiselle Dupain-Cheng!”, he greeted overly enthusiastic. “We meet again.”
“If you can call it that.”, Marinette laughed with the voice of a goddamn angel. She was wearing a white, polka-dotted pajama top, was illuminated by early-noon sunlight falling through some sort of window in the ceiling, and her hair – was – down.
If this was some sort of cosmic test, it wasn’t fair.
“To what do I owe the pleasure of your virtual company?”, he said quickly, trying not to think too much about how her hair looked even softer than the fur of a certain cat. Then, for good measure, he added: “Miss me already?”
Marinette disappeared  for a moment, before returning with a sizable stack of papers.
“As much as I could do without my favorite pain in the neck, we have a school assignment to do. You know, since school is closed?”
She leaned in and he held his breath.
“Did you even notice? I haven’t seen you last Friday.”
What was he supposed to answer to that? Oh, I noticed alright! It kept me from embarrassing myself by avoiding you, because my brain got all mushy ever since you fake-confessed to me pretending to be my cousin?
Ha! Fat chance.
“Aw, worried for me?”, he improvised, as usual, by being sarcastic. “Let me soothe your concern for your favorite pain in the neck: I merely got tired of cosplaying Adrien. I'm a very busy man, you see?”
She rolled her eyes and somehow managed to make it look cute.
“Of course you are. Well, hopefully not too busy for a presentation on marine biology, due next week.”
He blinked.
“Excuse me?”
“You know, the one Adrien and I are supposed to do?”
Felix Had Questions. For example:
“How was I supposed to know that?”
“Don’t tell me you didn’t hack into Adriens E-mail account. I saw you present homework that you couldn’t have known about if Madame Mendeleiev hadn’t emailed you, as Adrien.”
She raised an eyebrow, in a way that could almost be described as playful.
“Plus, you seem the type to do that.”
He scoffed and crossed his arms, as if it would hide his racing heartbeat.
“First of all: No, I am not breaking into my cousins account. I may like to prank him - or rather everyone, really - but that goes a little far. Secondly, that Lila girl was only too eager to do homework with Adrien-Me, so I could keep up with every assignment once I could get her hands off of me.”
“I thought a magician never revealed his tricks?”
True. But he had wanted to see if she would get jealous. Which she didn’t. Which was expected and totally fine by him. He didn’t care anyways.
Lucky for him, Marinette wanted to tease him more than an answer.
“Well, I hope your work ethic is better when it comes to presentations. I'll send you the materials!”
A click later, his laptop alerted him of One New Email, containing no less than twenty-two pages of material. He raised his eyebrows.
“Not to crush your little illusion of me as a hard-working student, but that looks like awfully tedious work. What makes you think I would voluntarily do homework meant for Prince Charming?”
The sassy little smirk she'd shown him during their battles of wit last week returned.
“You mean, aside from the fact that, once school is open again and Adrien is back, your little trick with pretending to be him will be revealed? And that I’m your best chance not to be chased out of town by a very angry Chloé Bourgeois? Not to start with Alya, Rose and Juleka, who still haven’t forgiven you for that stunt you pulled the last time you were here.”
Sound argument, he had to give her that.
“Pah!”, he said, just for the sake of irritating her. “So what? It’s not like it was my idea to move to Paris anyway!”
That was at least partially true. His mother had insisted to come back to France, mostly because she wanted to keep an eye on Gabriel. But he hadn’t been against it either.
It wasn’t like he had friends in London anyway, and in Paris it at least didn’t get boring, with all these butterflies and superheroes. Plus, he wouldn’t admit it out loud, but he had missed Adrien. That boy could use a little family - once Felix was done pretending to be him.
Marinette hummed and tapped her chin impatiently.
“Well, then see it as the prize you promised me after our little insult-match at the Trocadero.”
“Wait, wait, wait!”, he held up his hands. “I already settled that score, didn’t I? You confessed to me, remember?”
“I practiced confessing to Adrien with you, you mean.”, she reminded him with a raised eyebrow – Ouch, by the way – before leaning back in her pink chair. “And that was because you talked me into it. I never told you what I wanted, did I?”
Well, fuck. Not that the prospect of working with Marinette was that unpleasant, but in his current state of emotional confusion, it would only be detrimental. He needed an out, an excuse!
“Why would you want to work with me anyways? I would have thought you'd jump at the chance to do something with Prince Adrien of Dreamland. Why settle for the pain in the neck?”
Marinette sighed.
“Adrien is still recovering from his flu, and given the current, ah, global situation, I thought it would be better to put his health first. Besides, you're my favorite pain in the neck.”
“I'm flattered, darling”, he said, trying not to sound like it was as true as it was, “but-“
“Oh my gosh!”, Marinette interrupted him with a shout, and suddenly her eyes dominated the entire screen, as if she were mere millimeters away from her own computer. “Felix! What is that?!”
“Huh?”, he made, eloquent as usual. He turned around, just in time to see his traitorous cat jump from the dresser right onto his lap. Apparently, now that Felix had someone else to talk to, the little bastard felt neglected.
“You mean him?”, he asked, turning back to the screen with the cat in his lap. An inhuman squeal came from the other side of the line and Marinette sacked back into her chair, which spun around its axis, like, three times in a single second.
“Felix Graham de Vanily!”, she said with all but glowing eyes. “Show – me – the cat!”
Since her voice made absolutely clear that it had been an order and Felix had always had a strong survival instinct, he obediently held up the little monster. Who let out a plaintive little “Mow”, but otherwise submitted to his fate.
“Oh my gosh!”, Marinette repeated, “He's adorable!”
“You think?”, Felix said dumbly, at a loss for how to react to this sudden change in situation.
“I do! I do! What's his name?”
“Uh...”, Felix thought, debating whether a lie would save his reputation. “Uhm...”
“Don’t tell me you named him Felix Junior!” She turned towards the cat in false exasperation. “Did he name you Felix Junior?!”
The cat that was most certainly not named Felix Junior meowed in his feline confusion.
“No, of course not!”, Felix snapped back, sinking into the chair as if it might have mercy and swallow him.
“Then what's his name? What, for God’s sake, is this pretty little kitty called?!”
What had his life turned into?
“'dini.”, he mumbled, hiding his face behind the cat.
“What? Speak louder!”, Marinette demanded, and so he accepted his fate.
“Houdini!”, he groaned in embarrassment. “I named him Houdini, alright? I was eleven!”
For a moment, the line went quiet. Then, inevitably, Marinette burst out in laughter.
“For real? I can’t believe it!”
Sulking, Felix turned away from the screen, but immediately Marinette stopped.
“No, no, no! Bring Houdini back! I love his name, okay? Give him back!”
“You're not telling anybody of him, got it?”, he hissed, cheeks as red as Ladybug's suit. Marinette snickered.
“Of course, I promise. Houdini will be our little secret, alright? Now bring him back!”
Satisfied, Felix turned the chair back towards the laptop and placed Houdini on the desk. The curious thing didn’t hesitate to lounge onto his keyboard and examined the camera, much to Marinette’s delight.
“Oh lord, he's so cute!”
Felix sighed and leaned back.
“Believe me, he knows.”
“He looks just like you!”
At that, Felix spluttered and jumped up again.
“W-w-what?!”
Internally already setting up the equation: “Marinette thinks Houdini is cute, and Marinette thinks Houdini looks like Felix, then Marinette thinks Felix is cute?” he was about two seconds from fainting.
“He's got a little tie, see?”, Marinette giggled on, ignorant of the thought-spiral she'd sent him into. “Just like you!”
Oh. She meant the patterns of his fur, which admittedly looked a little like he was wearing a tie. Of course.
“Who's the most adorable thing in Paris? You are!”, Marinette continued with her shameless adoration of that undeserving little brat, who currently Mow-ed happily at the screen. Pah!
“Just so you know, he bites people for fun.”, Felix badmouthed his own pet, absolutely not because he was jealous. “You can’t trust him. He'll act sweet, but as soon as you're not looking he's got your fingers between his sharp little fangs!”
“Eh, I can handle it.”, Marinette shrugged and immediately went back to admiring Houdini. “You're a good kitty, aren’t you? The best, the best! Yes, you are!”
“No, he's not!”, Felix insisted through clenched teeth. “He's moody and arrogant! Nobody likes him, that's why I took him in! He thinks it’s fun to hurt people, he holds grudges forever and he's incredibly annoying when he's bored!”
Wait, was he still talking about the cat?
“You just like him because he looks all cute and innocent, but if you knew him, you'd never even want to be in the same room as him.”
Marinette had gone quiet on the other side, and Houdini narrowed his eyes at him in betrayal. Then she shrugged.
“If you don’t want him anymore, I'll take him in.”
“What?!”
She would have to pry the little shit out of his cold, dead hands!
“Did you not listen to a word I said?” he asked, trying not to let on that he didn’t actually dislike Houdini.
Marinette smiled.
“Sure. But I still think he's a good kitty.”
“But why?”
She hummed, pushing her stack of papers aside so she could put her elbows on the desk. Resting her chin on her hand, she looked up in him.
“Most cats are. You just got to give them a chance to come out of their shell.”
“But... But he's mean!”
“Maybe he's just lonely. Maybe he needs some friends, and then he'll learn to be nicer. I can wait.”
He was not blushing!
“Why would you want to? There's lots of better cats, you could just pick one of them right away.”
“Yeah, well, I want Houdini. All cats deserve a chance. Even the meaner ones.”
She smiled down at the black and white loaf that purred on his keyboard.
“In my experience, peop- cats only show their best sides if you give them a chance to open up. If you're too quick to brush them aside as hopeless, or mean, you might miss out on the most wonderful personalities underneath. And I think Houdini is one of those.”
And then, because the universe just wanted to see him fall, she winked at him. Jesus Christ!
“Anyway, I'll give you some time to read through the material I sent you. Message me once you’re done, we've got a lot of work ahead. Bye!”
Before he could realize what she had said, the window blanked and closed on him. Disappointed that his fan had vanished, Houdini meowed and returned once again to Felix' lap.
“Bye.”, Felix stammered belatedly. What had just... How could she go around just saying things like that? And then hang up?!
“Ugh, Houdini!”, he lamented. “Look what I have become!”
Reduced to a beetred, stammering, weird-cat-metaphor-using fool!
The cat gave a smug “Mrow” and headbutted him in the chin, but Felix didn’t have it in him to complain.
“Fine,” he sighed in defeat, “you win. So what if I like her?”
Houdini purred.
“You do too, don’t you? Bet you'd bite her anyway.”
He purred on, unperturbed.
“Knew it.”
He sighed once again.
“She's right, though. You are a good kitty. Deep down.”
Houdini meowed and licked his finger, just where he'd bitten him earlier.
“Well, now you're just sucking up to me! Two-faced little demon. Mwah!”
He pressed a small kiss to the top of his furry head, then rolled the chair closer to the desk and opened his emails.
“Alright, then.”, he tried to motivate himself, “let's show Marinette what a good kitty- what a good person we are and do our homework.”
At that, Houdini promptly stood up and jumped onto the bed, leaving him alone with twenty-two pages of reading material.
“Bastard.”

Bonus:
Ladybug, crashing through Felix' window: Felix Graham de Vanily!
Felix: Ladybug?!
Ladybug: I have it on good authority that you own a good kitty! It is crucial for the safety of Paris that I pet him right this instant!
Felix, remembering her right hook: ... sure?

2, 8, 14, 17, 18, 22 and 24 (yes I'm awfully curious)
(for this ask meme!)
Lol that’s indeed a lot but I’m fine with that, I asked for it %D
I shall put it under a cut. Alright let’s go
2. Most nostalgic game
Uh probably everything for the GBC since that was my first “console”. The first actual console my sis and me had (we usually shared everything) was the good old PSOne. I played Link’s Awakening and of course Pokémon Blue and later Gold. Pokémon Snap also has a special place in my heart.
We also had GameGear before, but I never played on it, actually.
8. Favorite song from a game?
ONE. ARE YOU KIDDING ME. ONE??????Are we even talking about song songs (like, with vocals and lyrics) or just music? In either case, here’s a list. Please add Chikai/Don’t Think Twice to it now, too.
14. First console?
Accidentally just answered that.
17. Place from a game that you’d like to visit?
Monsters will eat me because I’m just a middle-aged NPC, but yeah, sure. This is now a “coolest locations from videogames” question, right? Right.
In no particular order:-PLAY MYST/RIVEN/EXILE AND TELL ME THERE’S A SINGLE PLACE YOU WOULDN’T GO TO, GOSHEXILE HAS TO THIS FUCKING DAY MY FAVOURITE ENVIRONMENTS IN ANY GAME EVER, NOT GONNA LIE, PLEASE PLAY IT, IT IS SO FUCKING BEAUTIFUL THIS NEEDS CAPSLOCK-everywhere you can climb in an Assassin’s Creed game (really wish the optional bit in the Maya temple in III would have been longer, I luved it)-the Cetra village from Final Fantasy VII, and Cosmo Canyon (please don’t ask me why I pick the CREEPY places)-just everything in Final Fantasy IX because it is all so beautiful sobs I luv this game so much *sheds a single tear*-some places in X looked pretty rad, too, forgot the placenames lol-Traverse Town from Kingdom Hearts-Nia Khera, Fennmont, and all the cities in Auj Oule in Tales of Xillia. Not exactly my favourite Tales game, but it had by far the most beautiful cities-I still haven’t played Horizon Zero Dawn, but it looks fucking rad
If anyone has suggestions of games with amazing locations, please direct me to them, thx
18. Place from a game that you’d like to live in?
Actually I just wanna be an indoor catIdk put me in any of these beautiful places
22. Games you want to play?
Have I mentioned I still haven’t played Horizon Zero dawn because I’m an idiotI started a few hours of Child of Light and actually love dit, but never finished, whoopsI’d love to actually PLAY Tales of Destiny and Rebirth, but since I doubt Bamco will finally do me the favour to localize them for Europe, that will probably remain a dream. So I guess the only thing I’m gonna play in the foreseeable future is Kingdom Hearts III.Always wanted to try Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross, too, but the latter never got a European release, either, so…I wanna replay Final Fantasy IX for the 2089327th time. And Zesty.
24. Have you cried over a game?
Surprisingly, I don’t think I ever did? Surprising because I VERY EASILY cry when watching movies. I even cry about movies I don’t even like. I’m an emotional mess. However, Aerith’s death wrecked me so much I kept babbling about it at school, and none of my classmates had even played the game, and they all were very annoyed with me, lol.

Tumblr media
Fair warning, I am in fact terrible with faceclaims and that won't be a thing. So, moving on.
First, my main pitch for characters I want to see and the entire reason I did this one on Ian's account. Onward background characters! Specifically these!
Tumblr media
Okay, technically most of the background characters in Onward don't even have names. Most of Ian's friends (eventual friends to be fair...awkward child) weren't that big of a part of the movie. But! The best thing about background characters is they're great for new ideas!
And Onward is excellent in demonstrating body and ethnically diverse characters, and expressing people with disabilities and mental illness in accessible and realistic ways. (Listen, I could write a whole thing on this and why I love this movie because of it.) Canonically there's a lot of room for diversity; one of the canon kids uses crutches for mobility, we have this cute scene with an elven girl who is deaf;
Yeah...pictures and videos aren't great because it's literally a very short moment in the film; the two girls on the left, pink shirt.
(In case you were wondering, in the movie she's signing to her friend that Ian is cute. Plots? Maybe?)
Now, there are background characters with names too! And backstory to some degree; mostly from the Onward books that were published since the movie release. (Yes I own them, if you need info. Yes...I realize my fandom nerd is showing here.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sadalia Brushthorn! (AKA will be my ongoing wanted connection pitch for a while.)
Movie canon she was one of Ian's friends by the end of the story, post movie she's a bigger part of the books and ends up being one of Ian's best friends. Journalist, reporter for the school paper, enthusiastic type.
Plot-wise I've been wanting someone around from Ian's past that used to know him, although he was nine when he moved so it would be an earlier childhood friendship (or something like that)
There's also the literal troll who was a bully; Gorgamon. (Ongoing wanted connection pitch #2 for the foreseeable future)
Tumblr media
Listen, I think that would also be amusing for a plot if Ian had to deal with one of the people who used to mess with him showing up in town. It could be a great enemies to friends thing! Or just let him stay a bully and Ian can suffer. So many options! Plus we have no troll characters so new lore possibilities!
So, things that comes along with these ideas:
A very anti-Magick Detroit. Because Ian's canon is very influenced by how horrible Magicks were treated. I've referenced this some on-dash but there is much more depth to it that I'm going to be addressing soon and it would be interesting to have someone else from that setting and their views, even if they were only there briefly themselves. I will say the established on-dash canon is rough though, discrimination and dehumanizing concepts are involved. Basically this is a very strong reference to intolerance of magic that is very contrasting to Swynlake. (And one of the reasons Ian had an emotional breakdown. So...not light subject matter.)
Past ties with Ian! Somehow. But I want some sort of connection; clearly this is the main reason for my selfish plea here for these characters.
Magicks that aren't fully human! Unless you want to go that route of course, which is also fine. But it would be interesting to see cyclops or fauns or even trolls around.
Detroit accents? Maybe? Tbh this is the funniest thing about Ian because that is a rough af accent and I find it hilarious for Ian so that's just a bonus really. Obviously these character ideas could just be Detroit transplants from elsewhere.
Me annoying you to plot things! ...well, okay, maybe that isn't a plus. I am highly enthusiastic about this tho.
Now to non-Onward related ideas.
Sid! (Toy Story)
We had a Sid so very briefly, and I need this character back around! More specifically I need him, selfishly, while Zero is still in Secondary (though tbh that might be for a while...urgh) because I have truly extensive plot ideas involving this specifically. Plus Sid has so much potential for both angry teen vibes and tragic backstory! I need to see this, I want this very badly; I love Sid as a character and he's such a dynamic personality. Perfect for playing a character that can cause trouble without it being on scale that carries as much repercussions as adults deal with.
Jack (The Nightmare Before Christmas)
Selfishly, I need this. I also need someone to do this because if they don't I will 100% pick up Jack after I close a character. Because I have so many ideas and I still deeply miss playing Jack. Most of these ideas center around mediums, reincarnated ghosts and dark magic so, hey, if you want some really weird concepts for this? I've got so many, Jack was a full fledged concept before I had to duck out of the group forever ago due to illness and I will happily throw these possible ideas at someone.
Or not; really I just want Jack around somehow (because omg I will pick him up again and no, I'm not doing that for a long time but my willpower is in pain here) and I will make some sort of connection with Zero somehow if somebody picks him up.
Pascal! (Tangled)
The skeleton references magical tattoos and such and that's a great idea if someone wants to go with it? But also. Another character with color based magic around? Of course I want that. Plus I've always liked Pascal. Isaac would quite willingly be best friends/old friends! Yes! I just really want to see this character around, I love the potential concept.
Peter Pan (Peter Pan)
I had a pile of plot ideas with our original Peter so far as Ren, and would love to resurrect these. Plus the High Fae are a weird bunch, hard to get bored around them honestly. I would love to see another of the cousins, and one Ren grew up so close to, in play! This is a wildly open concept for a character and I think having Peter around would throw a bit more of the childish chaos into the bunch. (Not that I'm saying Peter needs to be younger, just...the character lends to a more free-spirited vibe?) So, yes, bring Ren their other cousin.

Andy D: Very cool! Is this for some work on that UtaPri stuff?
Joshua: It is.
Andy D: Then I will be plenty happy to stick around since ,after our classes, we all play Shining Live to see how well we can do on the songs but I want to see how this detective works his magic
Joshua: Very good! *Turns the the other person in the room* Alright so you want from 2018 to 2019 but I said I would give you to 2020 right?
Someone: Correct
Joshua: Alright...let's get busy!
So...we are already through nearly the first two months and we have had
Lost Alice
Shining Live (English Version)
Trois
Ultra Blast
And soon we are going to have forest of lycrois...correct?
Someone: That is correct. Kind of surprised that Ultra Blast wasn't put in the game around its release cos Lost Alice and Trois was
Joshua: True and I had hypothesized that "Ultra Blast" ,the QN Single to come out and the HEAVENS single to come out would all be in the game around the time of their releases and put in the campaign. I got thrown a little bit of a curveball when I found out that Ultra Blast wasn't put into the game so that I was wrong on...this now makes things interesting for later on in the "game timeline"
Someone: How so?
Joshua: Alright dig it
HAD they put in the song for STARISH then the QN song would have been in...this would leave some fans to wonder IF KLab was going to put in HEAVENS as the game progressed. Since they didn't do it (at least for the foreseeable future) then they can use the "Well we didn't for them" excuse which is annoying as all get out
The thing is though that doesn't rule out HEAVENS being in the game...it just puts it off further IF they are going to do it
Someone: Alright...explain the difference
Joshua: Sure!
IF the STARISH single (Ultra Blast) and the QN single were put in then there was a chance that HEAVENS would get put into the game around the Fall when their song comes out and we know this didn't happen.
SINCE they weren't then we can assume right now that IF they are to be put in it will be closer to around the time of the movie because of the way the releases work for story songs which is about one story a month. THIS would put them off to next year (if at all) because of the way the songs worked in the game
Someone: I think I'm getting this...so basically right now because of the fact ONE single out of three wasn't put in then the debut for HEAVENS in the story would be pushed back
Joshua: Right but now we have to think about this too
June for UtaPri is an interesting month. We have the 8th Anniversary of the franchise and we have two dates for HEAVENS debuts
6/6 - The debut of the trio in "Crystal Time"
6/27 - When they came back at the Triple S as a 7 person.
These two dates are from S2 and 3 and we know this for a fact because we can look up the dates of the episodes. What would be interesting to see is if they got put in around THEN but that might not make sense to some fans so we are looking further off...how much further is dependent also on the release calendar for when we get to S1 songs which I discussed before correct?
Andy D: You did and you think that would be July/August give or take
Joshua: Correct. So we take all this info which I haWe have ve been writing on my board here and lord do we have a puzzle to put together...BUT IT GETS BETTER!
Someone: How so?
Joshua: Alright...dig this
We have Shining Live and that is out BUT Broc is supposed to eventually release 3 more games for the VITA Ports
Debut
All Star
All Star After Secret
Broccoli is porting these games over to the VITA so that people can play those games on that system and earn trophies along the way...this makes sense since Dolce Vita still has to come out and that game's release date is TBD also
Someone: That game is also supposed to be HEAVENS' debut correct?
Joshua: That is correct but its running into an interesting situation because you see this is nearing the end of February and the movie comes out next year. You got AT MINIMUM 3 games to release between now and then and one is supposed to have HEAVENS in it. Now its POSSIBLE that the game comes out BEFORE 2019 but there has been no announcement on that yet so trying to get an answer to any of this is hard...really hard!
Andy D: So what is your best guess for any of this?
Joshua: Right now? THIS
We know that the QN and HEAVENS singles come out this year on dates TBD and we have the 8th Anniversary coming. THAT will be important because you figure when that comes we PROBABLY have to get this information
A Movie release date (We know the year but not month and day)
A release date for at least Debut if not that and possibly the AS games or Dolce Vita
The HEAVENS site will at least be up till the movie is past...we know that for sure but one BIG thing Broc should announce is whether or not they plan a 5th season and if SO...eh that could be interesting if they are planning that for 2020.
Someone: Because the movie is in 2019 right?
Joshua: Right and ramming them together isn't the best idea. They did that kind of with Revolutions and Legend Star and it made no sense and it REALLY made no sense because I would have had it where S3 was in 2015 (which it was) but then Season 4 would have been in 2017 and the movie STILL could have been in 2019 or even if they wanted to they could have given it the time to breathe like this movie is and put that on the 10th Anniversary
Andy D: What did you make about Agematsu's tweet about the series living on forever because "That was the original author's wish"
Joshua: THAT threw me because I think a lot of people were expecting either Season 4 for the Anime to be the end at this point and now the movie. This leads us to a big thing about the TV site
Someone: You mean the fact that it still has Season 4 as a visual and the re-direct for the movie?
Joshua: Yeah...see the thing that I'm trying to figure out is...IF Season 4 was the last season then after you did the redirect to the movie site you could probably let the TV site just go and not renew it for another year. Now the site is still up RIGHT NOW and that is probably going to be there till at least 6/24 but the question will be this
Do they renew the site and if they do then WHY?
Andy D: Well if they do its because they have a plan for a 5th season right?
Joshua: That's true but then the next question is this
Is the season with just STARISH?
Is it a STARISH/QN season?
Is it some deviation from what they have been doing and do something with either QN on their own or HEAVENS on their own?
Someone: Well one would think that with STARISH hitting #1 they would continue with them...the thing is where can their story really go?
Joshua: The writer in me tried to figure that out for a while...season 2 actually made me go "Okay...so they won this competition so where do we take the story?" Then they did Seasons 3 and 4 and lately I became more vocal about how that story was wrote and people hate me for it trust me
Someone: Well you spoke your mind and you really should be applauded for it. It was interesting to see how they tried to get the stories of QN developed in their episodes but HEAVENS was kind of...eh?
Joshua: Basically. Its like sitting in a room and you KNOW where the story SHOULD go but they did everything to convince you that you should want STARISH to win the competition...oddly when S3 happened I didn't start to "hate" STARISH but "resent" is more of the way I look at it
Someone: Well didn't Sailor Moon have kind of a similar problem back in the 90s?
Joshua: Yeah and then they did a Live Action version which in a way "fixed" the problems because you were able to develop everyone proper and give them stories and see how their characters went...even MINOR characters in a way got to have their time in the sun (not that Naru or Motoki were "minor" but you get the idea) so the story felt less of a fatigue factor in my opinion
Someone: I think I get it...so you think they didn't develop other characters properly and that makes it harder to embrace them correct?
Joshua: Right. It also doesn't help that the writers couldn't take a "hard left" and figure out another way to get where they wanted. This is just an opinion of course and I know this isn't where this was supposed to go but you get the idea
Someone: I do! I think the final question then is...what happens to HEAVENS come after "Dolce Vita?"
Joshua: That fate is in Broc's hands sadly. Its like they knew there is a base for HEAVENS right now but its tiny so they have to go where the money is...hell the English Version of Shining Live has more downloads than that twitter has followers but what can you do right?
Alright...did I satisfy your want for answers today friend?
Someone: You did and I appreciate your help and to your friend here it was a pleasure to meet you sir and have a great day
Joshua/Andy: Same to you and have a wonderful day
