OUR FIVE FAVOURITE FRENCH RIVIERA BEACH CLUBS
If you’re visiting the French Riviera, you simply can’t leave without having experienced a long lunch at one of the many beach club restaurants along the coast. It is most definitely one of my all-time favourite things to do in summer.
There really is nothing quite like settling in for what you know will be hours, sitting in an absolutely breathtaking location, looking out at the ocean and the yachts, eating amazing seafood and sipping French wine…tell me, does it really get any better than that?
There are loads of beach clubs scattered right up and down the coast, but here I focussed only on the clubs that have a tender service for yachts at anchor. Also, given I doubt you want to read for hours, I had to whittle it down to my favourite five…(it was a tough call!).
 So, here goes…
 LA GUÉRITE, CANNES
La Guérite has been around for years, since 1935 to be exact, and it is definitely one of the coolest beach club restaurants on the French Riviera. It is set in an inlet on the island of Sainte-Marguerite, just off Cannes. After a long lunch here, you can easily see why the rich and famous have always flocked to this isolated gem of a restaurant.
It also happens to serve what I think is some of the best food in the area. Executive Chef Yiannis Kioroglou is Greek so the menu is heavily focussed on simple, delicious Mediterranean seafood. My favourite dishes include the open-cut grilled king prawns and the incredible lobster pasta; they are truly delicious and sum up everything that is good in this world!
Sundays are definitely a highlight, usually with a live band and a DJ later, but you can often find a live band on other days as well. If you’re after a quieter lunch I would suggest an earlier sitting but if you want a wilder vibe then things really kick off from 3pm.
Come here for: the amazing food, the secluded island setting, and some great people-watching and super-yacht-spotting.
ANJUNA BEACH, EZE
Anjuna Beach is an absolute institution on the Riviera, and you just can’t visit the area and not dine here! Entering Anjuna feels like you’ve somehow crossed seas and stepped into an island fishing village in the Indian Ocean…think aqua rescued wood, and white flowing dream-catchers.
Anjuna is known for its wild-fun, crazy parties where almost anything goes. It’s not uncommon to see an impeccably dressed 75 year old up dancing on the tables. If the party vibe is what you’re after then I suggest you come on a Saturday or Sunday. Be prepared to let a little loose and mingle with the eclectic crowd; once the band kicks off you’ll be up dancing and singing, sharing stories with strangers you’ll likely never meet again.
During the week Anjuna is back to a normal restaurant and beach club with the occasional troubadour band keeping things lively. The food here is simple and delicious Mediterranean fare. They offer a number of share dishes which are ideal amongst a group table…of note, you simply can’t not have the ribs…they’re incredible! They also have a really good selection of delicious entrees that are perfect to share around on a hot day when eating seems like too much work! The service here is top notch; they’re friendly and attentive and definitely on the ball.
Come here for: the incredible vibe, the eclectic mix of people (including a regular celeb or two),….and those ribs!
PALOMA BEACH RESTAURANT, SAINT-JEAN-CAP-FERRAT
Paloma Beach Restaurant is all about secluded serenity and incredible views. This place was designed for chilling, relaxing and soaking in the sounds and the sights. The setting for this hidden restaurant is down some steep steps, in a quiet little bay tucked around the super exclusive peninsular of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat. The restaurant has been here since 1948 and is run by a group who have a collection of great dining spots around Nice and Villefranche-sur-Mer.
The food here is focussed on seafood, with simple Mediterranean inspired dishes (are you noticing a trend here?). In my opinion they serve one of the best lobster spaghetti dishes on the Riviera, it is absolutely delicious…classic, without too much tomato sauce, and with a whole lobster tail perched on top.
Paloma loves families and bringing people together. It is a perfect location for a birthday celebration amongst friends or an anniversary or engagement occasion. When you sit looking out at the water and the beautiful houses tumbling down the hills of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat and Beaulieu-sur-Mer, you really do feel like there is no place on earth you would rather be. In fact, I had this exact feeling three years ago, sitting in this very location, and then and there, I made up my mind to move to the South of France and never leave!
Come here for: the incredible serenity and beautiful views, late lunch sittings that run until 5pm, and to fall in love once-and-for-all with the South of France.
 EDEN PLAGE MALA, CAP D’AIL
Eden Plage Mala has been around for a while, but this year they have really changed their game and they now join my favourite list. As the name suggests, this beach club is a secluded little paradise, hidden deep down, surrounded by towering rocky cliffs in a little bay in Cap D’Ail. Here Eden has created a serene escape, complete with a carp pond, palm fronds, natural wood and tropical gardens.
In terms of food, Eden has tried to mix things up a little. There are some Italian favourites like fritto misto and burrata salad, mixed in with some Asian and Hawaiian influenced dishes like Thai salad and ceviche. They also have a really great selection of salad bowls from across the world. A brilliant thing about Eden is that they have a menu available for yachts at anchor; just order from the navette skipper and it is with you in 20 minutes.
If you’re after a relaxing day in a beach club then Eden is a perfect place. They have lovely big round day beds for groups, and offer massages in their spa area. Under new management, Sophie and her staff are very attentive and lovely, which all helps to make Eden a beautiful and relaxing place to dine or spend the day.
Come here for: cuisine with a difference, to escape from the rat race, or for a day on your yacht with food delivered on board.
PLAGE DE PASSABLE, SAINT-JEAN-CAP-FERRAT
I would have to say, that of all the beach clubs mentioned here, I think Passable has the best view. Some may disagree, but to me, the crystal clear water and the view over to the old town of Villefranche-sur-Mer, awash with masses of bougainvillea, is second to none.
This beach club is a great all-rounder. They have a large restaurant with lots of seating and a large number of day loungers in the beach club. The beauty of this is that you can usually get a table at the last minute. The vibe here is no fuss; it is a simple delicious meal, in a beautiful setting and at a reasonable price.
The food at Passable is once again quite Mediterranean in style, but with an Italian bent. They serve delicious whole fish of the day, done very simply in the Italian style and also do a lovely spaghetti vongole. And for those of you with children, you will be pleased to know that they serve pizza.
The biggest draw card for Passable is that it is situated in one of the best bays to anchor for yachts; the bay of Villefranche-sur-Mer. Their navette service is super-fast, aided by the very lovely Jean-Michelle, and once you’re anchored here, there really is no need to visit any other bays.
Come here for: the breathtaking views, a simple, no-fuss lunch, and the perfect anchorage if you’re on a yacht.
 We are Wild Child Charters, offering day charters with a difference across the French Riviera on board our very unique Wider 42. For more information get in touch by visiting www.wild-child-charters.com
** Just a side note, you’ll notice I haven’t covered Saint Tropez here, that is because there is so much change going on with the beach clubs there that I don’t know it well enough this season.

SAIL 2018 - Valdettaro restaura Vera Mary, la goletta di Re Giorgio V - 2018
Tumblr media
FROM http://www.navigamus.info/2018/03/valdettaro-restaura-vera-mary-la.html

Top 10 Sailing Destinations in the World
                                                                                                   “I must go down to the sea again, to the lonely sea and the sky.
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by”.
-John Masefield
Sailing is that one activity which evokes extreme reactions from people. Some consider it to be their life force, whereas there are others who feel that they are forced to endure it.
Whichever side you may
https://www.catamaran-charter-greece.com
belong to, you’ve got to admit that all the sailing hotspots around the world have one thing in common-they happen to be the most stunningly beautiful places on earth. Deep azure waters that sparkle in the sunshine, the gentle summer breeze … I’d pretty much give away an arm and leg to set sail right now.
Since that, tragically, isn’t possible, let’s just make do with the best sailing destinations around the world. But before we get to those, here’s a little on what sailing actually entails:
Sailing is primarily a summer sport, with most trips being conducted from April to October in the northern hemisphere.Sailing enthusiasts tend to have their own vessel, but one may also rent a suitable boat.There are several companies that conduct sailing excursions, as well as rent out boats; you may do a quick web search to find such services in the destination of your choice.
Bay of Islands, New Zealand
When it comes to natural resources, New Zealand is one country that is abundantly blessed. The Bay of Islands is a major tourist draw, all thanks to the fact that it is undeniably beautiful. The bay includes about 150 pristine islands, all of which are thankfully bereft of the human touch. Not surprisingly, the area has one of the highest per-capita rates of boat ownership in the world.
?? What you need to know
A downside of being this beautiful is that sailing here will cost you a bomb. But expense or no expense, one always comes to the Bay of Islands with sailing on the agenda. Paihia is where you come to kick-start your journey, charter a boat, and set sail. Year-end spells summertime in New Zealand, and Paihia being a small town, accommodation needs to be booked in advance.

Fair Wind Charters
Zanzibar, Tanzania
Let’s be politically correct, lest we inadvertently offend geographic sensibilities-Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous part of Tanzania, in East Africa. Zanzibar is one helluva region whose exotic quotient only seems to increase with every visit. Zanzibar Town will be your hub when you arrive here, which is clearly a place beautiful enough to easily spawn a whole new write-up.
?? Do the

unmissable …
… by riding a dhow, a traditional sailboat to explore the surrounding archipelago, with its aquamarine waters and some incredible Instagrammy beaches.

One Ocean
Cte d'Azur, France
What can be said about a place that Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse were unabashedly in love with? Cte d'Azur is a dream destination, whether you sail or you don’t. Nice, Cannes, Saint-Tropez, Monaco … you’d be hard pressed to wonder if these places are more celebrated than the famous names who are routinely found lazing on their luxury yachts here, every summer.
?? Where to begin?
Assuming you aren’t chummy with Brad and Angie, or the likes, you can hire a set of sails from Antibes, Cannes, or Marseille, and chart your own course. Be warned-monogrammed boat shoes from LV are a must, as are those Jackie O shades, if you wish to blend in here.

Yachtico
Whitsunday Islands, Australia
When you come to the Whitsunday Islands, sailing doesn’t actually remain a top priority, all thanks to the wondrous expanse that’s below you-something that goes by the name of the Great Barrier Reef. Enough said? No, of course not, especially for those stickler-for-details ones out there. This natural marvel has the most awe-inspiring coral gardens, sea turtles, and a one of a kind array of fabulous fish species.
?? Don’t just sail here …
… when you can swim, dive, and snorkel to your heart’s content. Pay obeisance to one of Mother Nature’s most beautiful creations, which is the Great Barrier Reef. Sailing, coupled with other seaside activities is hugely popular here, so ensure that you plan way ahead of schedule.
For boat rentals
The Whitsundays
Greek Islands
The Aegean and the Ionian Sea are home to a massive 1400 Greek Islands, so you’re definitely in for a treat once you come here. And these are not just any islands that we’re talking about-you’ve got Santorini, Corfu, Mykonos, Crete, and the likes. As a premier tourist destination in Europe, Greece certainly has a lot to offer, whether on land, or at sea.
?? Something to remember
https://www.greece-charter.com
The northeasterly wind is a constant during the summer, so navigating the sails here can be a teensy bit of a challenge.
For boat rentals
islandsailing
Aegean Sea, Turkey
With Greece upfront, can Turkey be too far behind? Certainly not. What you’ll find here are pristine waters that are easy to navigate, and some of the best coastal resort towns in the world-Ku?adas? and Alaat?. What you can also do, is set sail along the narrow waters of the historic Bosphorus and dock in Istanbul, an ancient wonder in its own right.
?? Here’s what you should know
Sailing happens to be one of the best ways to experience Turkish destinations. So get aboard the traditional glet, and begin your voyage of discovery. Mind you, it can get fairly crowded here in the summer (April to October), so do your research well, and avoid getting fleeced by some smooth operators.

Happy Charter
St. Vincent and The Grenadines
Okay, it’s the Caribbean. The Caribbean. It’s like the area was designed with seaside activities in mind, with sailing topping the list. With almost 30 islands spread over 60 miles of calm, tropical waters, it isn’t a wonder that the Caribbean is counted among the best sailing destinations in the world.
?? Why the Caribbean rocks
With the helpful trade winds blowing constantly, an island perpetually in sight, gorgeous turquoise waters, untainted white sand beaches, what more can a sailor ask for?

Windward-Islands
Ha Long Bay, Vietnam
A bit out of the blue, the karsts in Ha Long Bay simply remind me of those rather cool floating peaks from Avatar. A look at the picture above, and I’m sure you’ll agree too. Ha Long Bay is one of the highlights of Vietnam, and finds a place in UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites.
?? Keep talking …
If the UNESCO status isn’t impressive enough, know that the calm and clear waters, combined with the exotic oriental appeal of this place will have you returning for more.

Indochina Sails
Newport, Rhode Island, USA
What can you say about a seaside town which is the former home of the America’s Cup? Well, for starters, it’s got to be an extraordinary sailing destination to have hosted the most prestigious sailing tournament in the world. Newport is all about sailing, and all things sailing.
?? The sailing capital of the world …
… is what they call Newport, and rightly so. The Narragansett Bay and Newport Harbor are bustling with sailing boats of all sizes. Along with being the capital, Newport is definitely the rightful home of sailing.

Adventure Watersports
Adriatic Coast, Croatia
Croatia may seem a bit far-fetched to those enamored with the more glitzy Cte d'Azur, but the Adriatic shoreline does have a few aces up its sleeve. Nautical tourism is one of Croatia’s major businesses, and you’d know why once you get here. The country’s coastline has about a thousand islands scattered, to make it an appealing sailing destination. Split or Dubrovnik ring a bell?
?? All hail the ‘new Riviera’
Methinks it’s a tad unfair to call it the new Riviera, simply because it’s not. It’s Croatia! And it’s breathtakingly beautiful in its own right. What you have here are tiny fishing hamlets, hidden coves waiting to be explored, and historical port towns. All of this sans the celebrity ruckus of the French Riviera. Win-win!

Russian billionaire buys world’s first private icebreaker
Tumblr media
One of the top 50 richest Russians, banker Oleg Tinkov, wants to present what he calls a first private icebreaker to the public next year, before the €100 million vessel sets sail to the Antarctic among other destinations.
Founder and owner of Tinkoff Bank, worth $2.2 billion, is going to show off the SeaExplorer 77, the newest addition to his pet-project, La Dacha, at the major global yacht show in Monaco as early as 2020.
After the presentation, the superyacht will head to the gems of the Indian Ocean, the Seychelles and Madagascar, Russia’s scenic Kamchatka peninsula and Alaska, before challenging its reinforced icebreaker hull in Antarctica in late 2021 and the beginning of 2022.
“It is yachting, but a completely different one,” Tinkov explained. “It’s about exploring, but not about drinking martini and showing off in Saint-Tropez.”
The ‘icebreaker’ cost the billionaire more than €100 million (US$112 million). The banker wants to enjoy it himself for around 20 weeks per year and plans to lease it for the rest for €690,000 per week.
The entrepreneur says he was the first to order such a vessel. In fact, it is an expedition yacht, which can break ice up to 40 centimeters thick and maintain autonomy at sea for up to 40 days. The 77-meter vessel, offering luxury accommodation for up to 12 guests in addition to the crew, also features two helicopter hangars, a dive center and decompression chamber, and carries a submersible, two snow scooters and waverunners.
Microsoft founder Bill Gates has already showed interest in the luxury sea adventure, and wants to have a three-week long charter, while a Russian businessmen from the Forbes list, whose name Tinkov did not reveal, wants to rent the boat for six months.

The Perfect Valentine's Charter Destinations
The Perfect Valentine's Charter Destinations
Love is in the air this week, and if you’re stuck for an original idea to celebrate Valentine's Day, why not consider a romantic yacht charter? Here are our top picks for an intimate, impulsive getaway...
1. Cote d’Azur Sipping champagne on the French Riviera is a failsafe option for old-school romance. Here, glorious natural beauty is counterposed by chic seaside enclaves buzzing with glamorous resorts and swanky restaurants. And why choose between the exclusive glitz of Cannes, the haute couture of Saint Tropez and the sumptuous eateries of Antibes when a West Med yacht charter can take you to all of them?
2. Italian West Coast A charter beginning at the Italian Riviera and stretching down to the Aeolian Islands will yield unbridled beauty. The Tuscan Archipelago is a rustic paradise crystallised in time, whilst Corsica’s rugged terrain blazes with year-round sunshine. Sardinia, meanwhile, is an arcadia of rolling hills dotted with lemon groves. The soaring cliffs, crumbling villages and cerulean sea of the Italian coast is the perfect joint experience.
4. The Caribbean and Bahamas A Caribbean or Bahamas charter is laid-back affair to be enjoyed at a different pace of life. Days are for languishing away, whilst evenings buzz with the infectious rhythm of the steel drum. Whether you’re cruising the crystal waters of the Exumas or enjoying the powder-sand beaches of the Leeward Islands, the region represents the perfect opportunity to put life on hold and simply get away.
4. French Polynesia The South Pacific is a less-chartered destination, but one which is gaining ground. White beaches, technicolour reefs and water of the most intense aquamarine make up the distinctive allure of these islands, however, whilst the famous overwater bungalows are the luxury honeymooner’s dream, the hibiscus-flowers-and-grass-skirt vibe of Tahiti, Bora Bora and Tonga makes for a real island-living experience.
5. Antarctica If you are one of those couples who consider Valentine’s a hallmark holiday, why not book a yacht charter that speaks to your unconventional nature? Antarctica is a near-deserted continent of hulking icebergs, glittering shores and striking natural beauty. On the itinerary is Deception Island, a collapsed volcano that forms a natural harbour, Paradise Harbour, a spectacular glacier befitting of its name, and Lemaire Channel, a narrow waterway snaking between Antarctic cliffs. One thing is for certain: it will be memorable.
Abaco, The Bahamas
Antigua, Leeward Islands
Tahiti, French Polynesia
Sardinia, Italy

We are about to take you aboard a beautiful catamaran chartered for the occasion. GET THE BEST DEALS FOR YACHTING IN SARDINIA AND SOF
If you’re looking for dreaming a little, follow us on this 14-day itinerary among exclusive locations, enchanting beaches, and a fabulous sea:
How to choose the right boat for French Riviera and Sardinia yachting itinerary?
We at Your Boat Holiday operate charters throughout the Mediterranean Sea as well as in exotic destinations such as the Caribbean Sea and Southeast Asia. Our experience has led us to know how to advise our customers on the right boat according to their needs, depending on whether they want to prefer luxury and comfort or an adventure holiday and maybe even more sporty.
In the first case, the choice falls on a yacht. There are various sizes but in general, they offer large spaces, luxurious interiors, and a wide range of entertainment such as water games, slides, and beach clubs.
Catamarans and sailboats, on the other hand, are slightly less comfortable, especially in terms of living spaces, but at the same time, they offer a more authentic seafaring experience. They are also very suitable for eco-sustainable holidays and have an eye on the environment by using the wind instead of engines.
Whatever your choice, what to do if you are not an expert skipper? Not being familiar with how to steer a ship is actually not a big problem. All rental boats offer the possibility (and sometimes the obligation) to have qualified onboard personnel who take care of everything related to the management of the ship: from navigation to cooking and cleaning.
Relying on their skills means spending a relaxing and safe holiday.
What is the best time for such a trip?
The summer season is certainly the ideal one to plan to navigate the Mediterranean Sea. In particular, the Tyrrhenian Sea offers its best between May and September, when the days are longer, warmer, and sunny and the sea temperature is very pleasant.
What will our yacht itinerary between French Riviera and Sardinia be?
Here is a brief summary of which destinations we are going to visit during our 14-day tour:
Our embarkation marina: French Riviera, Principality of Monaco;
Day 2: French Riviera, Cap d’Antibes;
French Riviera, Cannes and Lerins Islands – day 3;
French Riviera, Saint Tropez – day 4;
Sardinia, Stintino La Pelosa beach – day 5;
Sardinia, Maddalena archipelago – days 6, 7 and 8;
Sardinia, Porto Cervo – day 9;
Sardinia, Tavolara island – day 10
Sardinia, San Teodoro – day 11;
Sardinia; Cala Luna – day 12;
Sardinia, Villasimius – day 13
Sardinia, Cagliari – the last tour spot;
Everything’s ready? Make yourself comfortable, the journey begins:
Among the many places that are worth a visit on a sailing holiday on the Côte d’Azur, the most popular is certainly Monaco. A small autonomous state, or better, a small kingdom that extends for a few kilometers along the French coast.

Getting lost among the palaces and boutiques is very easy for those who visit it for the first time such as being bewitched by the splendor and luxury that inhabit this place. In the Montecarlo district, the heart of the city-state, typical examples are the casino and the renowned harbor with its luxurious docked yachts.
Antibes is a village famous for being an inspiration for the great Picasso. It houses a museum dedicated to this huge artist. Not far from there is the Cap d’Antibes promontory, dotted with small coves and crystal clear water beaches. A boat tour here is worth an entire vacation. It is a small peninsula that extends for a few kilometers towards the sea and offers remarkable landscape views. It owes its name to the very chic village of Antibes.
Cannes, famous most of all to be home to one of the most important movie festivals in Europe. It is a perfect town for boutiques and good food lovers. You can not miss a visit to the castle from which enjoying a breathtaking panoramic view of the shoreline.
The Lerins Islands, on the other hand, are a small archipelago made up by two major islands located a few kilometers off Cannes bay. The largest, Sainte-Marguerite island, houses the remains of a fort used as a prison where the famous “man with the iron mask” was imprisoned. The second, Sainte-Honorat island, is home to the Lerins abbey.
Saint Tropez, is a luxury and opulence synonym that sometimes results in ostentation. Examples are the numerous yachts docked to their quay seeming to compete with each other in size and color. This town is also famous for its clubs and nightlife as well as well-known beaches such as Bouillabaisse, Caneliers, Salins, Tahiti, and Pampelonne.
Often considered among the best beaches in the Mediterranean and even in the top ten of the most spectacular in the world, La Pelosa is one of the Sardinia symbols in the world as well as the place that made the town of Stintino famous, transformed from a fishing village to a renowned tourist resort, above all thanks to this natural masterpiece. Located in northern Sardinia, it is a must on a tour around here. It looks like a painting and a natural swimming pool made of white and very fine sand and Caribbean-colored water that just reaches visitors’ ankles for tens of meters.
The Maddalena archipelago is located on the north-northern coast of Sardinia, off the Costa Smeralda, in the stretch of sea between Sardinia and Corsica known as Bocche di Bonifacio. It consists of 7 major islands (La Maddalena, Caprera, Budelli, Santo Stefano, Santa Maria, Spargi, Rizzoli) and several smaller islets, bathed by a wonderful and transparent sea. One of the most evocative landscapes in the world due to its naturalistic value is under the protection of the Maddalena Archipelago National Park. Born in 1984, it extends over land and sea for hundreds of square kilometers.

The inlets create a myriad of landings, the colors of the sea are unique and the seabed is a diving paradise. Simply unmissable.
Porto Cervo is located in the north-eastern corner of Sardinia and is the realm of luxury holidays. It is an exclusive seaside village nestled among natural beauties where, during the summer, social events, parties, and sporting events follow one another attracting the international jet set. It’s easy to find yourself shopping with VIPs and celebrities here.
The marina, built in the 1980s, is today one of the largest and best equipped in the Mediterranean with about 700 berths, and home to the Costa Smeralda Yacht Club, a prestigious club that organizes international sailing regattas.
Not far from Porto Cervo is Tavolara, an island that emerges from the sea like a granite colossus dotted with greenery and Mediterranean scrub. An excellent destination for climbing lovers, Tavolara is a mountain 560 meters high, four kilometers long, characterized by impervious rocks and splendid chromatic shades like the green of juniper, rosemary, and mastic, in combination with the blue and emerald green of the waters around. The island is the fulcrum, as well as the characterizing symbol of an unforgettable spectacle: the marine protected area of Tavolara-Punta Coda Cavallo.
San Teodoro is a sunny Gallura village made up of elegant villas and flowery streets overlooking the turquoise sea of the north-eastern coast of Sardinia. Here you will be spoiled for choice among its splendid beaches: La Cinta, a thin and long stretch of golden sand embraced by the blue and crystalline sea, Cala Brandinchi, a white coast and waters similar to tropical paradises renamed, not surprisingly, Tahiti or the magnificent Marina di Puntaldia with its modern marina.
One of the wonders of the Orosei Gulf and the whole Mediterranean, Cala Luna is an inlet carved into the cliffs with an 800-meter strip of fine golden sand in the center that plunges into the clear blue sea. Its bottom, shallow in the first meters, quickly becomes deep and is appreciated by snorkeling, diving, and underwater fishing enthusiasts. The cove is protected by steep cliffs overlooking the sea, 300 meters high and bolted in some points, the destination of many climbers. To the north, the cliffs are dotted with five large caves: inside, as well as enjoying the shade during the hottest hours, you will see the sea enclosed in an ampoule.
Villasimius is the pearl of southern Sardinia, a dream tourist destination, whose population multiplies in the warmer months with the arrival of thousands of tourists. Its coast is made up of a ‘crown’ of beaches, interspersed with small cliffs and the Capo Carbonara promontory. On the eastern side of Villasimius, you can discover enchanting beaches like Porto Giunco, with the Notteri pond behind it, the habitat of pink flamingos, and other rare species of birds. From the top of the promontory that dominates the beach, where an ancient Aragonese tower stands, you will witness a panorama that you will hardly forget.
Glimpses of historic districts overlooking the sea, shopping streets, and panoramic terraces, including the inimitable bastion of Santa Croce, where you can spend romantic evenings after burning sunsets. Cagliari is the main and most populous city on the island, in the center of a 430,000 inhabitants metropolitan area as well as a gateway to Sardinia and a cruise hub in the Mediterranean.

Inspiration on the French Riviera
So much more than just a coastline, the French Riviera is dotted with hidden gems steeped in local history, excellent cuisine and artists hideaways, discretely located alongside the region’s world-renowned glamour. Head inland from the waterfront bustle to explore towns immersed in rich Mediterranean culture, where pristine vineyards hug hillside contours and an array of artisan activity provides endless appeal.
It is no secret that the evocative Cote d’Azur has long been a big draw for artists and some resulting masterpieces have changed the face of art as we know it. These favoured haunts have aroused such passionate vision thanks to the peerless blue skies and vivid hues of sun, a fact easy to appreciate when watching the exquisite light flicker across the undulating coastline. Dramatic, diverse and ultimately picturesque, this area is home to numerous “villages perchés”; ancient hillside towns packed with thriving communities, where secluded luxury blends with ingenuity. Such unique enclaves of inspiration indeed project an inimitable pull, ready to enchant and beguile the senses of those who come to explore.
Eze
Found 425m above the azure sea, countryside charm exudes from ancient Eze. Centred around the ruins of a 12th century castle, an intricate labyrinth of medieval streets bursts with craft boutiques and art exhibitions. Overlooking magnificent villas festooned with bright bougainvillea, the Jardin Exotique is a haven of tranquillity, not to mention a horticulturalists’ dream, packed with a multitude of cacti, citrus trees and tropical plants. The stunning Chateau Eza hotel, a secluded 400-year-old property and former residence of a Swedish Prince, offers a one-star Michelin gourmet experience on the elegant terrace, high above the sparkling Med. For uber gastronomic dining, the two Michelin star La Chevre d’Or is a world-famous delight. Filled with olfactory delights, the Galimard Perfume Factory and Museum in Eze captures the nostalgia of a bygone era with antique perfume bottles and delicate fragrances locked within a magical environment; an opportunity to visit should not be missed.
Cimiez
Behind the buzzing town of Nice, the historic neighbourhood of lofty Cimiez is calm and secluded, wafted by gentle sea breezes and blessed with incredible views. A town once favoured by glamorous aristocrats, a must-see is the magnificent 17th century mansion of Musée Matisse. Home to the master himself, several of his major works are on display – both art lovers and the uninitiated alike will be captivated. Another surprise is the beautiful 16th century Franciscan monastery, filled with hundreds of items of art, a small museum and immaculate gardens. For those wanting to get away from it all, the lovely Cimiez park is ideal for relaxing beneath the olive trees or a stroll around the fragrant rose gardens; where during summer evenings there are often music concerts held here.
Biot
Charismatic Biot, in the hills between Antibes and Nice, offers a niche of delicate creativity positioned within robust stone fortifications. Here the world-renowned La Verrerie de Biot showcases the mesmerising glasswork trade, with accomplished technicians using the secrets of earth and fire to create objects of beauty. To fully master this skill takes over eight years and craftsmen must be determined, artistic and capable in order to produce the Biot signature bubble structures; each item they craft is a completely unique work of art.
A captivating place both inside and out, the Musee National Fernand-Leger displays prolific Leger’s enthralling progression from post-impressionism through Cubism to Tubism. A powerful collection of large and bright art pieces commands their own space in order to be fully appreciated; being there is an ultimately feel-good experience. The garden hosts many of this important French artist’s sculptures and ceramics, while nearby are equally impressive murals and mosaics displayed across external walls.
Antibes
Within the magnificent 17th century Chateau Grimaldi in Antibes, impressively positioned on the site of the ancient Greek city of Antipolis, Musée Picasso pays exceptional homage to the radical Spanish artist. This chateau hosted Picasso for a short period, where he found his artistic spirit was inspired by the remarkable light found in this exquisite seaside hamlet. The museum’s curator allowed Picasso to use the top floor as his studio, resulting in an incredible 23 paintings and 44 drawings. Upon leaving, Picasso donated his work to the museum, stipulating all should remain there permanently. Regularly visiting, he gradually expanded the broad collection, donating numerous drawings, prints, paintings and ceramics over time. This seaside hamlet was the first museum in the world to be dedicated to Picasso’s work.
Saint-Paul de Vence
Situated on the Colline des Gardettes overlooking picturesque Saint-Paul de Vence, the Maeght Foundation is a world-leading private institution and modern art gallery. Designed by Josep Lluís Sert, a variety of renowned painters and sculptors collaborated with the Catalan architect to create a place where art, nature and architecture blend in perfect harmony. With diverse works of art from the 20th century and contemporary artists such as Georges Braque, Marc Chagall and Joan Miro, this exceptional site contains some of the most important collections in Europe.
Not just limited to simply visual delights, a reputation for culinary ingenuity sees visitors flock to the French Riviera to sample a variety of mouth-watering and colourful cuisine, further enhanced by the accompaniment of award-winning wines and local cheeses. An appreciation for food and fine dining runs in the veins of every French man and woman, with outstanding regional ingredients cultivated with pride; it is no wonder many illustrious chefs hail from this epicurean centre, their gastronomy revered the world over.
Mougins
Mougins, positioned between Cannes and Grasse, rises in a corkscrew of enchanting cobbled streets. The historic centre is awash with quaint alleyways adorned with fountains and statues, while artists’ studios blend into a backdrop of lush gardens. Having become known as a centre of gastronomy, Mougins is home to a myriad of magnificent restaurants, including those with Michelin stars, not forgetting their wonderful food festival each year.
A highly attractive aspect in the village are the trees that grow through restaurant terraces in the main square, creating their very own artistic imprint. At the heart is the picturesque Vieux Village, offering spectacular views over Cannes and Grasse with an international reputation for its gourmet cuisine, where great chefs such as Roger Vergé and Alain Ducasse managed restaurants. Firm links with the art world endures: Mougins has been frequented and inhabited by many artists and celebrities such as Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior, Man Ray and Winston Churchill, and now showcases 30 art galleries and museums. It’s most famous resident, Pablo Picasso, spent the last 12 years of his life living here.
Port Grimaud
Often referred to as “Little Venice”, relaxed Port Grimaud sits on the doorstep of buzzing St Tropez, superbly combining glorious Riviera beauty with the provincial charm found in Venice. This picturesque mini port offers diverse eateries serving high-quality cuisine to tantalise the taste-buds in a scenic setting. Head inland to the medieval city of Grimaud itself, where thriving galleries and studios have arisen in this charming location filled with motivation for painters, sculptors and writers.
Nestled just away from the glittering coastline, the inspired seclusion and unexpected experiences of these hidden Riviera charms are just a small step away from universal harbourside glam. As Greta Garbo once said, “I want to be alone” – discover the Cote d’Azur lesser-known spots where your wish may come true.
