"Can I identify as intersex if I have no intersex traits?"
"I want to be intersex but I'm not."
"Can I transition to be intersex?"
Questions and feelings like these aren't uncommon. The short answer is, well, no, you can't identify as or transition to be intersex. And, reasonably, many intersex people get frustrated and tired of perisex (non-intersex) people asking them this. But wondering these things, especially if you are experiencing distress or dysphoria over them, is completely okay. I would just like to say that I, as an individual, am okay with any questions of the sort and encourage them, but please do not go around asking any intersex person you find these sorts of questions.
Being intersex is an experience that one is born with or develops over time due to their own natural body and not by the influence of things like being on HRT for trans+ reasons. Some examples include being born with different genitalia than what's acceptable in the widely-spread understood (but false) binary model of biological sex, or experiencing different levels of hormones that are commonly associated with only one of the binary sex.
A lot of people, before realizing they're intersex and have intersex variations in their body, want to be intersex without fully understanding why. I used to be like this. I use to desperately wish that I could be intersex, as it would explain why my body was the way it was, and explain the experiences that I had had for so many years. It turned out I was intersex, and this explained why my body was different from other's!
However, if that isn't you, that's okay. Still, you can't label as intersex. Intersex is more of an experience than it is a label you can simply choose or not choose to be. Although, yes, people who fall under being intersex do not have to call themselves that if they don't wish, much of society at large will still consider them intersex. It is an important term for many to have as it allows them to find community, resources, and explanations to their lived experiences in bodies that are naturally out of what many consider "the norm".
However! The good news is there ARE labels and communities for individuals who "want" to be intersex. (Although avoiding the phrasing wanting to be intersex is important as one cannot become intersex, thus the phrase is generally accepted as offensive.)
Let me introduce you to the term altersex.
Altersex is an umbrella term that can be defined in a few different ways, although I'll be using a personal definition, as many definitions online are unreliable.
Altersex - An umbrella term to describe having or wanting primary or secondary sex traits/characteristics that do not align with the binary sex model that a significant portion of society has adopted. It is primarily used by those who are not intersex and are trans+ and wish to or transition specifically to have a body that does not fit the aforementioned sex model. It can also be applied to fictional characters whose sex is not intersex but still doesn't match the binary sex model and/or human binary sex model.
The term absolutely is open to individuals who wish to use it to explain how their body has changed due to trans+ transitioning or due to being intersex! It's simply not as common, but anyone can use it. An example of someone who might use it in that way could be a trans+ person who has been on testosterone HRT and experienced clitoromegaly because of it, and wishes to have a label/term/community that explains and expresses how they no longer fit binary sex standards.
Some common examples, feelings, or reasons as to why someone would label as or fall under the altersex umbrella includes:
Someone who was born with a vulva/vagina, but wishes to have mixed sex characteristics and wants a vulva as well as a penis
Someone who desires to remove all external genitalia of theirs (gender nullification)
Someone who wants to have genitalia that is nonhuman, such as fantasy genitalia like alien genitalia
Someone who wants to have breasts but have a penis
There is an infinite number of ways to be altersex! Again, it's an umbrella term. Some common queer identities that might align with altersex experiences though include:
Being bigender
Being genderqueer
Being cisgender but desiring to physically transition (significantly seen with femme gay men/achilleans and butch lesbians/sapphics)
Being xenogender
Being nonbinary
Being gendernull
Being genderfluid
Being multigender
Being genderfucked
Being both transmasc and transfem or FTMTF or MTFTM
Of course, that isn't exhaustive! Moving on from that, here are some labels underneath the altersex label.
Salmacian. Salmacian is a label I see most commonly and I think is most relevant to this post. Salmacian refers to one who desires to have mixed sex characteristics. People with salmacian or salmacian-adjacent experiences often do ask if they can transition to be intersex, as there is not much awareness around the label and community. Salmacian is one of the most common altersex experiences. Aphrodisian is an alternate but less commonly used term. Salmacian is also incredibly common of an experience amongst bigenders, and vice versa. Other more common alternate terms for it are bigenital, bisex, or ambisex. Here is a link to some salmacian resources!
Xenogenital. I think xenogenital is what I see most next to salmacian. Xenogenital is a broad term that refers to anyone who desires to have nonhuman sex characteristics or traits. This is very common among those who are xenic/xenogender and those who are otherkin. Some examples include:
Wanting alien genitalia
Wanting animal genitalia (often referred to as faunagenital)
Wanting plant genitalia (often referred to as floragenital)
Wanting genitalia that can change, morph, and/or retract (often referred to as morphisex)
Wanting cyber/digital genitalia or mechanical/robotic genitalia (often referred to as cyberex and machinex respectively)
In conclusion...
Although, no, if you are not intersex, you cannot become or transition to become intersex. Some people wish or desire to be intersex because it explains their intersex experience without them realizing, but for many people, this isn't case. And that's okay! Altersex is a label/term/community that embraces anyone who wishes to have or currently has genitalia and sex traits/characteristics that don't fit the commonly used binary sex model. Altersex has labels/terms underneath it, such as salmacian/bigenital and xenogenital, which are most common.
Additional notes
Some people claim being altersex is inherently intersex. This is completely wrong! Wanting to have a body that fits how you feel and makes you happy in it is not wrong. The only thing that is intersexist is if you phrase or frame being altersex as "desiring to become intersex", as intersex is a lived experience and something you cannot become. If you realize that you are altersex, and people try to give you a hard time for it, ignore it. If it's online, simply block them.
You also never owe anyone information about your body, regardless of what they try to tell you. You do not owe strangers information on if you are intersex or perisex. On if you are altersex or not. Even people you know are not owed this information. Just like how you never have to explain your queer identity to someone, even if they feel like you owe it to them, and even if you know them, you don't. You are you, and what parts of you you share with others are up to you!
I believe that the intersex and altersex community have a lot in common and many shared experiences. I think that, not only do the two communities relate to each other, but, in some cases, people will be both intersex and altersex at the same time.
If anyone has any questions, sees any errors with this post, etc., please let me know! I'm always happy to correct or edit wrong information/typos, and I'm always welcome to any questions that are in good faith. I am not open to discourse about debating the validity of any labels, identities, or experiences. I am not open to debating intersex experiences. My blog is primarily for intersex people, but it's absolutely welcome to anyone with any questions, especially to intersex-adjacent experiences.

Redesign of the salmacian flag
[Image description: The first image is a flag with three vertical stripes, slanted diagonally. The first and third stripes are dark green (or "dark greyish harlequin"), the middle stripe is purple (or "moderate violet"), and dividing each stripe is a thin pale gold (or "very light amber") stripe. In the middle of the flag is an o with a horizontal line on the top right side. Inside the circle are two wavy lines, similar to an almost equal sign (≈) or the Aquarius (♒︎) symbol. The second image is the salmacian symbol by itself, in black. End ID]
Green represents aspiration towards having mixed genitals, and the normalization of genital non-conformity; yellow represents euphoria from having mixed genitals, and raising awareness of salmacians’ existence; purple represents the fusion of different sexes, and individualistic personal autonomy. The flag’s central emblem, the “Sign of Salmacis”, consists of a lowercase sigma for “salmacian”, with waves to represent the sex-transforming Salmacis Spring of mythology.

Introducing the Altersex Swag Tournament!
Do you have a blorbo you love that's totally altersex? And swag about it too? Then this is the tournament for you!
(Psst. Don't know what altersex means? I found these links off Google that can help explain)
Here's the rules:
Submissions must be 18+ (or equivalent for nonhumans).
Submissions should desire, or happily have, a sex configuration that is not perisex (or equivalent) for their species.
Note - being intersex alone does not make a character altersex.
No real people, even if you think it'd be funny, with only two exceptions - "fy00sh, the Pollrunner" and "You, the Voter".
Headcanons accepted so long as they don't disrespectfully contradict canon (to be judged on a case by case basis - postcanon Jade Harley would count for example).
Some notes:
My pfp is the salmacian flag simply because I'm salmacian and think it looks cool. Non-salmacian entries are absolutely allowed. nvm im using a bowsette pfp now
Depending on the number of submissions I get, I may split them into smaller brackets (salmacian bracket, angenital bracket, and so on).
I'm also running @stachebracket so I'll be keeping submissions open here until finals wrap up over there, unless I get so many submissions over here that I can't handle it, in which case I'll let y'all know.
Unlike the first-come-first-serve way I held stachebracket submissions, over here I'll be basing who gets in on who gets the most submissions, so don't be afraid to submit someone you think has already been submitted.
Some characters I'll be submitting for sure are Salmacis from Greek mythology, postcanon Jade Harley from the Homestuck epilogues, and Rose Quartz from Steven Universe. Not that they're guaranteed a spot, to be clear.
And with that, here's the

just saw someone crediting me for coining xenogenital and clicked through to a post where i indeed mark it as i coined it, and
i completely fucking forgot that i did
doubly hilarious given i was just thinking “i bet all these definitions focusing on Imagination are just same phenomenon as quoi and originally it was more nuanced and could indeed fit Transition” (answer: yes)
apparently i originally described it as Conceptualizing and linked it to alien… whereas now i would emphasize it as a Relationship To Body and that it should be understood as agnostic about physical transition/modification, but certainly not understood as Unaltered or as Just Fun Fiction Narrative (nor about “always a dream, alas, definitely physically impossible, mustn’t get hopes up, let’s preempt any innovation and always specify it is hopeless wish”)
which of course is the whole. issue. and probably requires more intentional careful pushback (but also, is simplification and flattening just inevitable)
how do we open up the cognitive space to think about “hey, some people have genital setups that don’t occur naturally”
(without activating dysphoria and anti-trans cooptation along the lines of “-plasty surgery results are never ~real~ genitals”)
and this is where eunuchs and nullos are obvious but often forgotten examples. assumed archaic, or always only coercive. no thought about changes in healthcare experience or needs (eg risk of osteoporosis after gonadectomy unless on a hormone therapy; i wonder what preventative care some folks may still need and get denied because it’s tied into assumptions about organ inventories; how much does disgust reaction activate and prevent life-saving care)
but even then, how do we avoid the sort of “male / female / neuter” trinary?
i’ve been about removal (literally, blockers-and-ectomies) of sexed organs and tissue and traits, and it’s led me to yearn for transmutation into something visibly notably unrecognizable
and i don’t know what “not penis, not vagina, not a smooth doll crotch either; not scrotum, not labia, not smooth skin either” looks like, still — even as i literally have it, lmao.
like… how does this visually, conceptually (there’s the original word i used again) register? and how do we create the possibility to register something new? something possible. literally able to be noted/noticed.
i think a lot of xenobio designs focus on the physically humanly impossible for the foreseeable future - prehensile, especially.
probably all of this is very directly tied to phallocentrism. and it generates a binary yes/no, where further details are irrelevant (beyond coercive intervention to reinforce and reify that binary).
and anyway for all discussion there’s this looming spectre of “it’s sexual harrassment to discuss your own genitals, tmi inappropriate predatory creepy, can’t hide behind the veneer of fictional and have to be explicit (anything less gets misunderstood and elided back into penis/vagina/neuter) so that makes it real life sexual boundary crossing” - when uh how does one “get consent” to arguing with a paradigm of what can/does exist
mm. i threw this in my drafts for two weeks trying to think further and/or encourage myself to Formalize this into a bigger Plea For Paradigm Shift Around Genital Reality, and i hope i’ll be able to articulate that better in the near future but i’m gonna share this now as is

If you haven't added them already and its not too much trouble I would love to see xenogenital and apothigenital flags added to your flag cc. Sidenote: Is there a list of all the flags you have added thus far? I'd feel bad asking for something you've already done.
Howdy! They've not yet been added, so I will do them tomorrow when I get the chance, as it's getting late here for me! ✨
Also there is! In the original, non-request flags, all the flags can be found under the Read More, which is hopefully obvious fdsjklkfdslj, but for the requests I've got a screenshot of all fulfilled requests on the ModTheSims page, that I update every time I get a request! Though for sake of ease, I'll post it here for you pardner!
Tumblr media
Your two will be added when done as well!
Also, just because it's long, here's every flag in the main file!

Have you seen the people on Twitter making 50 thousand look Tweet threads about how being altersex “fetishizes” being intersex 😭 God forbid you don’t want a traditional transition
I haven't seen those specifically because I rarely use Twitter but I know what you're talking about lmao
For one it shouldn't matter whether or not someone wants to transition for a fetish. But also the way people think that "no one could possibly want non-traditional genitalia for Good and Pure reasons, it's a curse you most be born with" is good for intersex people. Hell intersex people CAN BE ALTERSEX, especially people who want to return to genitalia they had at birth that was changed against their will as infants. There absolutely are intersexist altersex people but to call an entire group fetishizers for simply having genital dysphoria/euphoria is so unhelpful to intersex people. Like there are far bigger issues than salmacians just existing (also, people can work on unlearning intersexism, whereas these people want salmacians to either stop existing/be dysphoric forever because of their discourse-poisoned idea of what "fetishization" means)
It's also fucked up because I know that a LOT of salmacians felt guilty for years for wanting a salmacians body because it is so heavily sexualized, and the only place they ever saw it was in porn. r/salmacian has a ton of posts from people saying "I thought I was a weird freak for wanting this & that it could only exist in hentai but now I realize it's actually normal and attainable". It's so deeply fucked up to shame people away from transition that could radically improve their life for some bullshit identity politic "activism".
I've said it before and I'll say it again: the idea that non-traditional genitalia is not only natural, but can be desirable to possess, is only good for intersex people. The idea that non-traditional genitalia can ONLY be for people who were born with it is just. stupid. It creates this vibe that it's like, a burden you must carry rather than something you can choose to have or keep because it's normal and can be just as nice as traditional genitalia. Intersex people and altersex people can and should be friends & allies.

Xenogenital
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Xenogenital is a form of altersex referring to individuals who wish to have nonhuman sex characteristics and/or genitalia, or individuals who prefer to conceptualize or imagine their sex characteristics and/or genitalia as alien or otherwise nonhuman. This can be any form of sex characteristics that are not normally found in humans. Imagining oneself with alien sex characteristics may reduce disconnect, dysphoria, or cause euphoria for the individual.
The term is commonly used by xenic and otherkin individuals, but anyone can use it, as not all xenic and otherkin people are xenogenital and not all xenogenital people are xenic or otherkin. This term could also be useful for non-human alters within systems.
Systems who identify with this may also call themself aivotsex. One who identifies as this may also fit the diffxeno label as well.
Subsets
This term is very vast in nature, and holds many possibilities for how one may visualize or desire their genitals, however some specific subsets exist and are listed below.
Astrogenital: someone who desires space-related genitals.
Cyberex: someone who desires a sex that is digital.
Faunagenital: someone who desires animal-related genitals.
Floragenital: someone who desires plant-related genitals.
Machinex: someone who desires a sex that is robotic, mechanical, and made of mechanical/robot pieces.
Morphisex: someone who desires sex traits that are able to morph, change, and/or retract.
The xenogenital flag was designed by Tumblr user fathermartinarchimbaud. The alternate flag was created by an anonymous wiki user.

blech i just wish it was easier to find and have consented-into discussions about medical transition that isn’t “penis/vagina/both” and also didn’t stop at “neither”
which is the main reason why keywords can be helpful imo, but only if there is shared knowledge to search them, and they don’t get diluted/morphed into something else (like fictional-impossible-only), and the searches don’t get clogged up with endless flags + lists + one-off affirmations with zero practical discussion
i’d also love broader discussions about paradigms of physically possible bodies
but of course dysphoria and medical trauma and intersexism and transmisia and exorsexism all make this quite charged and potentially fraught, without carefully cultivated trust and negotiated shared language somehow
and then there’s censorship and structural barriers

The rectangles, from top left to bottom right, are: bright purple, pale purple, pale orange, bright orange, bright orange, pale orange, pale purple, bright purple. In the center where the pale rectangles meet is a very small black plus sign. End description.]
Faunoxen (or faunoxen+, if typing): An umbrella term and combination of faunagenital and xenogenital. We are aware that faunagenital is a subset of xenogenital but wanted to create a new term 1) to be a standalone adjective that can be used to refer to someone like “they’re faunoxen” and 2) that presents the two identities as equal and interconnected since the known conception of the “alien” is based off of what we know of biology and how it works. In other words, this is a form of dysphoria/euphoria that is connected to speculative biology.
With the popularization of aldernic and varsex as terms, this is likely a  bit outdated, but for nostalgia’s sake we made it anyway.
