Skywings !

i have ONE skywing oc their name is Waxwing and they’re soooo dear to me

when they were a dragonet, their village was destroyed by the war for the rainforest, which left them with no home and no family.

so they kind of grew up everywhere and nowhere, travelling between settlements and tribes as they went. eventually they settled in a village on the edge of the icewing kingdom, and were taken in by the matriarch there, an ice/mud hybrid named Jackrabbit. and her nephew, Permafrost, acted as an older brother/mentor figure to Waxwing, training them to be stronger and helping them to solidify their goals.

the thing about this young dragon is they have this idea in their head that they have to save everyone, as a leftover from losing their whole village way back when. they’re also incredibly reckless and self-sacrificial at times. but their main goal, the thing they begin to strive for in their time with Permafrost and Jackrabbit, is to put an end to the current war being waged all over pyrrhia, and to (hopefully) unite the tribes.

once their training is complete, they go and get their nose in the business of just about every tribe, and find out something terrible. Queen Mirage, #1 instigator, is incubating an egg. a magic egg. one imbued with the attributes and abilities of every tribe, the dragonet inside intended to be a weapon, to help Mirage take over the world.

the main story, on Waxwing’s side of things at least, begins when they steal the egg and take off toward the rainforest, getting quite attached to the not-yet-born dragonet on the way.

currently, i’ve been trying to figure out a design for them, and here are some color tests i’ve done (based on a cedar waxwing bird. none of these are at all set in stone)

it’s like a fundamental law of nature at this point that i will become emotionally invested in whatever the hell charlie slimecicle is up to. this has been the case for years

if u still want ppl to ask u about jrwi characters,,,,, can u yell to me about chip I wanna hear about my boy. idm if its like. headcanons or just generally what u think of him or whatever

!!!!! he’s human. he’s SO human. but he’s not human in a human way. he wields his humanity like an otherworldly creature. like something not human. he loves and cares so fully and wholly that what would have been just a sneaky, tricky rogue, is instead a hero, with power and love to share and give.

and thus i think it’s REALLY interesting to think about a story in which he ISNT human. i’m a very big fan of nonhuman entities that are, at their core, driven by their humanity, and i love playing around with chip as something like that.

there are fun things scattered throughout his story in riptide to go off of in this way. the options i have had floating around in my head are these (this is a very incomplete list and new ideas are always welcome)

chip has always mirrored the people around him, and i find that very intriguing. a very interesting way to push that idea further is to make him a changeling, molding himself into his own perceptions of the people he admires/has admired. arlin, reuben, jay, gillion, there are a lot of possibilities. and his more recent canonical forging of his own identity, can be extended with him coming to terms with his changeling identity, and revealing his true face and name to his friends.

i also really love when characters fall easily into certain vague roles. in this case, gillion as the moon, jay as the sun. pretty straightforward. right? but then, by that basis, where does chip fall? in one version of this, he’s the earth. metaphorically speaking, as the story takes place on mana. but he’s earth. solid ground. grounding his friends, holding them together and keeping them from rising too high as to forget what they’re here for. gillion, the chosen one, jay, forseen rising to greatness, and chip. i will now remind you that he knows celestial, the language of spirits and the gods. now why the hell does he know that? every other language he knows, he knows for an easily explainable reason. except celestial. and so, in this idea, i think he wasn’t born in the usual way. we never find out who his parents are, so who’s to say they’re human? perhaps, with gillion so aligned with lunadeyis (or however her name is spelled,) and jay aligned with aster, he is a middle point. a bridge. not chosen by either, but created by both to keep gill and jay’s feet on the ground, to bring them together and push them forward, motivate them, and comfort them when they might split apart. a god-born “human” with an unassuming demeanor but with great connection to fire, and the ability to motivate and empower one person, or hundreds.

this one has the same base inspiration as the second, chip knowing celestial and therefore having something UP with him, and chip being the third to gillion and jay’s very thematically satisfying space theme. but this time taking it in the opposite direction. gillion, the moon, jay, the sun, and chip? the stars. fiery, burning balls of light and fire and hope. in this version, he may look human, but just below his skin is power far greater than in canon. for he is one of two things: an aasimar, a child of a human and a celestial being, or a celestial, an angel, himself. this actually lines up very well with dnd as it stands, as his inexplicable fire magic can be explained by either being, or being connected to, an angel. and i’m just saying, in dnd there is such thing as a firemane angel. no idea what that thing is supposed to do story-wise, but i quite like angels, and chip has fire, so……….. think about it. cool, right?

ALSO. i’m literally always open to asks about my thoughts on things. i’ll never be bothered, i have a constant itch to talk about stuff and a little directional nudge is always appreciated.

well they have those big ol toe claws, yeah? which could do some serious damage. however what most people do not consider is the fact that velociraptors are. not big.

and i've seen people take on living dinosaurs (birds) MUCH bigger than that. the key? a shield. what're they gonna do? nothing. i'd block em and there'd be nothing they could do about it. and once i've blocked it with my shield i use my weight (there's no way i'm not heavier than this silly bird-looking thing) to pin it down and boom. problem solved. i have won. and then we become the very best of friends

broooo it’s literally my favorite game rn. i will never cease. y’see, the way i play videogames is i will get obsessed with a particular game for somewhere between like a week and a couple months, and then forget about it for the rest of the year. currently i’m probably nearing a month being into wolfquest again. ALSO. this is kinda my first time getting really into it since i was really into classic edition back in 2018. very fun 👍. honestly it’s a game i’d just really recommend tbh. why am i saying all this

unfortunately i only have the one mostly figured out sandwing, but she’s the greatest so it’s fine. her name is Queen Mirage and she wants nothing more than to Take Over The World, and her current plan involves her rogue rainwing gf Hummingbird (who’s whole thing is making Evil Deals and selling poisons + weapons,) manipulating other dragons into murdering all the current queens in order to destabilize things. these evil women are very special to me <3333

seawings

i’ve probably got the most developed story with my three main seawing characters, Urchin, Oyster, and Horizon. (important things to note: all my ocs exist in a hypothetical future about a generation and a half after the last wof book, borders are tense and the seawings have basically hidden in the sea the whole time and don’t leave often) (also Urchin and Oyster are pretty close, Oyster having repeatedly protected Urchin from their mom)

Urchin and Oyster are the two oldest children of Queen Otter, but the biggest issue here is her heir, Urchin, is transgender. and Doesn’t want to be queen. Oyster? is also transgender. she’s also always kept to herself, and has been pretty closeted her whole life. and Urchin only realizes himself when he meets Horizon (they/them,) a mysterious loner who dresses him up and helps him figure out his identity, Urchin regularly sneaking out of the palace to go hang out with his hot boygirlfriend who validates his gender identity.

but uh-oh, Urchin hasn’t seen Horizon in a while, he’s wondering where they are. they don’t have to worry too long, though, as pretty soon he finds them. killing his mom (due to orders from Hummingbird but he doesn’t know that yet.)

and now things are different. Horizon is gone, and the pressure is on Urchin to be the new queen. and like, his mom was hella transphobic and generally just unkind to him and his siblings, but it’s still a bummer, y’know? so he’s not doing great. so basically the day he’s supposed to become queen, he quickly shifts attention to Oyster and declares that she’s the rightful heir to the throne and also implies that he’s making her queen now, much to the confusion of just about everyone, and he just up and leaves. he leaves the palace, he leaves the city, he even leaves the seawing kingdom for the first time, with a couple goals in mind, mostly to find himself for real, but also to track down Horizon so he can yell at them for a while.

and yell at them he eventually does. as well as make some interesting friends along the way.

You’ve probably answered this question before, but what are your favorite jrwi riptide (or any campaign in general) episodes and why? :D

my favorite riptide episode is #82, moonlight, storm, and sea. it is so so so special to me and everything leading up to is was honestly just the most exciting the campaign has been in my opinion. yeah ¦]]]]]]]

and my favorite apotheosis episode is all of them and my favorite blood in the bayou episode is all of them and my favorite prime defenders episode was the one where they were hanging out with cantrip, xavier, and alan and they were all just buddies hanging out and playing mario kart irl

what riptide ships/friendships are you most insane about?

oughhhhh huuge fish & chips enjoyer, me. moreso in fanon, though. it’d be really cool to explore in canon HOWEVER that would definitely detract from a lot of very important other elements of the story, namely jay, and would ruin the balance of the campaign for sure. but yeah they’re soooooooo. y’know? i do think they should kiss again.

tbh i do just like shipping chip with people. playing with riptide characters like dolls. mostly chip. and i think captain jasmine drake could fix him.
