Collector's Edition: Reviving that Love
Let's have an assortment of mature, (mostly) fluffy, coupley Revival fics, shall we?
This list only scratches the surface; but hopefully it's enough to soothe a particular itch.
**Note**: Another Revival list I've done is Beefy Revival Mulder (and Other Muscular Mentions)-- perfect pairing to this, I believe.
Loose chronological order below~
@oohnotvery/the_eternal_optimist's Always Wanted
But he has a key to her place, because they’ve always had keys to the other’s place, even in horrible times. It arrived in the mail one day, sealed tightly in a bubble-wrapped envelope, addressed from her to him with a handwritten note that he hadn’t even bothered to read before crushing it up in a ball and tossing it into the trash can. Several hours later, in a fit of frustration, he had fished the note out of the trash and shoved it, unread, into a kitchen drawer.
Breakup Mulder realizes Scully has been waiting for him.
@aloysiavirgata’s (Ao3, WBM, Gossamer, LJ, Alt. LJ)
Si Hoc Legere Potes, Liberaliter Educatus
"It was very important to Deputy Director Skinner that you two meet with me. He felt that you needed some guidance before you could resume any kind of professional partnership."
I grit my teeth. You're a dead man, Skinner.
S10 Mulder and Scully run laps around the FBI recruitment therapist.
I need a fic with Scully's stolen dog Dagoo, and her wearing a Knicks tshirt.
“This is the one I ripped a piece off of for Boggs, Scully. This isn’t just my Knicks shirt. This is my favorite Knicks shirt. I’ve been looking for it!”
She pulls Tesla closer. “Stop violating the fourth amendment, Agent.”
“Stop violating the eighth commandment, Doctor.”
Post The Weremonster Mulder and Scully debate dog names and Knicks T-shirts.
What's your Mulder and Scully Thanksgiving sex headcanon?
"I'm going to die," she mumbles, her eyes half-lidded in tryptophanic stupor.
Mulder and Scully are stuffed after dinner.
@flukemen?/@pinebluffvariants/scienceandmysticism/contradictiontonature's (Ao3) Tie (prompt #1)
“Hello?”
“You know it’s me.” He did. “What are you doing?”
“I’m shopping. And I hope you’re using your bluetooth.” He could tell she was driving from the white noise over the sound of her breathing.
Mulder uses Scully's expertise to pick out a tie.
@hemisphaeric's (Ao3)
"Mulder you need new clothes"
The next day they decided to go into town and do some shopping, after Scully had had to tell Mulder for the tenth time he needed clothes and that no, he couldn’t wear those old ones just to seduce her.
Scully helps Mulder pick out new suits for his new job.
Let me carry some of the pain for you
Suddenly warm hands were touching him but he didn’t react. He couldn’t react, feeling so distant from everything. Scully was speaking, he recognized her voice, but not her words, those were like a white noise in the back of his head, which was so loudly screaming.
“I am better Scully, for real” he didn’t realize he had started talking at first, but he couldn’t stop, tears fogging up his vision.
Mulder panics, thinking Scully will leave him again.
touch.
Things had changed again in the last period though, she had come home; she had been spending time there with him more and more frequently. He understood her necessity to take things slowly, to test the territory before diving in head first, but he felt ready for it.
Mulder is glad to have Scully back.
Mulder, Scully and Elon Musk
She pushed him away and swatted at his arm. “You woke me up early to talk about Elon Musk??”
Mulder wakes Scully early for Elon's rocket news.
grumpysimon's Morse Code
He asks you for a pen. The genius always loses things. Your coffee comes and he spills a little on the napkin. He taps on the table. Morse code, maybe. You’re too tired to figure out what he’s saying to you in secret. You say his name and that smile is more crooked than ever.
Scully secretly loves Mulder's obsessive passion.
@baronessblixen/Baroness_Blixen's
Belong
He closes his eyes and counts. What will it be, he wonders. The sound of a car or their creaky door?
Another minute passes before he hears the soft squeak behind him.
Mulder tells Scully he's "done okay without her."
A few months after they're back on the x-files, Mulder's notices that his neck and shoulders are sore.
Mulder feels better and promises - with a wink - to do the same for her, she just needs to ask. She doesn't ask but Mulder knows her feet are sore a few days later, after hours of walking around. He silently starts massaging her feet while consorting in his hotel room, half-empty take-out containers on the bed next to them....
Mulder doesn't replace his chair-- which is just fine, because Scully becomes his masseuse.
Mulder giving Scully a foot massage
“Exactly. My feet hurt and I need a break. I’m not…” She trails off again as she massages her foot.
“Not young anymore?” Mulder offers and her head shoots up like a rocket, her eyes shooting daggers.
“Not used to it anymore.”
Post Ghoulie Scully's high heels finally catch up to her.
There's No Place Like Home (Ao3)
He loves her stubbornness. Once, she told him that she fell in love with him because he was stubborn. Well. That was the pot calling the kettle black. No one is as stubborn as his Scully.
AU-- Nothing Lasts Forever Mulder brings an injured Scully home.
Growing Old (with You) (Ao3)
“Just wait til you’re my age,” he jokes.
“55 looks good on you.” She proves her point with a kiss on his nose. “I can only hope to look as good as you when I turn 55.”
“You will. And I will remind you of it. If I’m invited to your birthday, that is.”
“You’re always invited to my birthday.”
Scully drops in for Mulder's 55th, assuring him his aging concerns are overblown.
A Study in Chemistry
"I didn't know you cared for this kind of movie, Scully." Mulder, sprawling on her bed, in her motel room, looks slightly disgusted at the small screen where two generic actors share a truly boring, less than passionate kiss in a typical, cheesy Hallmark Christmas movie.
"I don't," she says, returning her attention to the case report they're supposed to be working on. Despite his words, Mulder's eyes are glued to the movie and Scully can't help but smile.
Mulder and Scully bridge the gap between them-- and all because of Hallmark and memories.
Surprises Are Best Served Ice-Cold - Chapter 1
They both start towards each other at the same time, laughing.
“Mulder, I don’t remember how to stop,” she says, trying to get her skates under control.
“I’ve got you,” he says calmly and she hopes he’s right because she loses her balance, stumbles the last few steps towards him and crashes right into his chest, knocking him to the ground.
Mulder surprises Scully with a frozen over lake for Christmas.
A Day in May (Ao3)
Mulder puts on cheesy Christmas music and turns down the lights, creating a mood. They share a cup of sugary hot cocoa with mini marshmallows and whipped cream. When Scully raises her eyebrows at the cream, Mulder dips a finger in and deposits a blob on her nose.
“Live a little, Scully.”
And she does.
Mulder forgoes sleep to help Scully decorate their tree on Christmas Eve.
Night Out
"I can't breathe." Mulder is pouting. She wants to be angry with him - all of this is his own fault, after all - but he looks so miserable and yet so adorable that she feels sympathetic. She strokes his cheek and smiles at him.
"I'll make you make some soup."
"Are you sure I'm not dying?" he asks again, coughing. She offers him some tea and he sips it noisily.
Mulder gets sick after a night of Squatchin.
@wtfmulder/@momdadimpoppunk‘s (Ao3)
post-Plus One
“You reasoned your doppelgänger out of existence,” he says flatly. She smiles against his bare shoulder, nodding.
“She was a very reasonable woman.”
He laughs softly, the rumble of it caressing her cheek.
Post Plus One Mulder and Scully catch a few winks.
ficlet; twenty-six years
On her side of the desk, he has procured for her a plain blue baseball cap, a skinny caramel macchiato, and a not-skinny blueberry muffin.
She sits down as he hums and types away at something, taking a bite of the muffin and putting the cap on her head.
Scully always guesses which anniversary Mulder is celebrating.
fluff 🤢
They’re packing up the basement just one last time. They both learned early in life that saying goodbye is so much easier when it’s a choice, and the moment holds no bitterness, no fear.
Post Revival Scully finds flowers she'd once given Mulder in their basement office.
@myassbrokethefall's untitled rm9sbg93zxjz post-ep
Scully had chanced to see a picture of a blobfish on the internet some months ago and he wasn't sure he had ever, in their years and years together, seen her laugh so hard. It was one of the best things that had ever happened to him, frankly, watching the outsizedly hysterical reaction of Dana Scully MD, his serious scientist partner, to a picture of a lumpy, slimy, theatrically frowning fish on the internet. He had brought it up at every opportunity for weeks, renamed the wireless network at the house Blobfish Cove, found a way to work a reference to it into a meeting with Skinner, once printed out a picture of it and left it on Scully’s pillow, and watched in utter delight as she got the helpless giggles every single time. (Even the Skinner time. He hadn't even asked, just looked wearily at some point behind their heads for a few seconds before sighing and continuing on.)
AU-- Robot episode Mulder dreamed up the whole thing.
@onpaperfirst's (Ao3) Honey Hi
The doors slid open and Mulder wrangled a cart from the corral.
“They set up the little rooms and it makes you feel like you’re at home,” she said. “It dulls your senses. You forget you’re in public. And all of a sudden you’re in the middle of a fight about which rug matches the couch.”
“Let’s not fight in Ikea, Scully. It’s so bourgeois.”
Part II to Home, Home, Mulder and Scully's romantic life is examined through the lens of perfectly balanced humor... and their IKEA trip.
@ghostbustermelanieking's (Ao3) bearing north (Ao3)
“The cops out front will stop him,” Mulder says comfortingly.
She nods. Her skull is still pounding, but she feels limp in his arms, safe. “I tried to fight him off,” she says. “I almost did. But he got angry and shoved me into the pool. I hit my head.”
Mulder takes Scully home after she's injured while pursuing a perp.
"You’re beautiful, you know that?” (Ao3)
She turns her eyes up to meet his, burning blue eyes in the night. “You’re… all I have left now, Mulder.” Names are left unsaid between them, but they all register in his brain, like a knife. “I think my leaving was for the best, but I’m ready to come back. You’re my family, Mulder.”
Scully proposes to her Mulder.
@settle-down-frohike's Headcanon: It started after her first disappearance, on a flight to nowhere North Dakota.
It started after her first disappearance, on a flight to nowhere North Dakota. She was flipping through a dossier and he was dozing, as per usual. She heard a mumbled version of her name and threw a distracted “Hm?” his way without glancing up. “Scully.” Firmer, more forceful this time. She looked over, annoyed, and spat “What Mu-“ and realized he was still asleep, but fitfully so.
My Struggle II Scully hopes she can comfort Mulder once more.
@lilydalexf/LilydaleXF 's My Andromeda
He looks back at the road and answers honestly, "I didn't watch many shows. The ones I really wanted to see I wasn't allowed to watch. Except after excessive begging."
"And on nights you could successfully sneak into the TV room after your parents fell asleep." It's a statement, not a question.
"You know me so well, Scully."
Mulder and Scully imagine a night of stargazing.
Eternity Awaits

"You don't want to freeze together?"
"Not on this decrepit couch I don't."

Mulder said Push a third time and they both groaned with the effort of heaving the massive piece another three feet, barricading it firmly against the bedroom door.
“What does this,” he gasped, “remind you of?”
Scully, drawing in deep gulps of air, pushed herself up on her elbows, propped on the edge of the chest. She did not say the fleeting thought that had gone through her head: maybe it was not a bad thing Mulder had not been present at the birth of their child.
“Um,” Scully said.
“Yeah,” Mulder said. Panting out, “Towers of furniture.”
Post This Mulder and Scully move their furniture back into place.
The Scully Treehouse of Horror
The automatic taps don’t turn on and off for him. He’s invisible to its sensors. The alarm, on the other hand, blares every time he walks in the door. Sometimes, even, once he’s inside the door and has been for some time. He’ll get up at night for a drink of water and Scully gets jarred out of postcoital bliss by the klaxon siren of intruder alert, intruder alert, Mulder cursing at the sink in the kitchen, yelling for Scully....
If she yells back for him to punch in the code, he does the wrong birthdate or botches the spelling of Queequeg. More often than not, she pads out in bare feet, tying her robe, entering the right code, filling the glass with cold water, sleepily herding a grumbling Mulder back to the warm bed.
Scully's house hates Mulder; and she loves him all the more for it.
Lapsed_Scholar's Wake-Up Calls
On their way into work, his phone rings. It’s just a wrong number, and the other commuters don’t really take any notice, but Scully arches her eyebrow.
At her questioning look, “Do you recognize this theme?”
“Vaguely. Should I?”
“It’s our theme song, Scully! And I think it suits us. Kind of spooky.” A beat. “Don’t you remember our movie?”
If possible, her eyebrow climbs higher.
Mulder always ratted he and Scully out to people-- and still does now, years and years later.
@slippinmickeys/SlippinMickeys's
Prompt: ballet slippers, chocolate pudding in a can, Wyoming
It was like a Carlton Varney fever dream; like a brothel with aspirations. Mulder actually paused in the doorway and leaned back out to double check the address number on the side of the house.
“Wow,” Scully said, daintily setting down her suitcase a few feet inside the door. She wanted to make a joke, but Mulder looked appalled.
Mulder books a truly terrible vacation spot.
Prompt Drabble Collection - Chapter 12
“I want something I can’t make.”
It was Day 18 of self-isolation and if you looked at quarantine like the stages of grief, they had rolled easily past panic and guilt, skipped loneliness altogether and were deep in the grip of isolation.
Scully shot him a look.
Mulder and Scully are sick and tired of COVID quarantine.
Prompt: Mulder & Scully vacation Christmas/Hanukah at the Quonochontaug cabin post season 11
“When was the last time you stayed here?” she asked, wrinkling her sensitive nose at the smell of dust, of mildew.
One suitcase on the floor at his feet, one still in his hand, Mulder closed the door behind him, his face ponderous. “Overnight?” he clarified. “I think I was nineteen?”
Post Revival Mulder and Scully spend the New Years in the old Mulder summer home.
outsquatchin94's Joy to You and Me
“Those hipsters… But Scully, that was such a look. Also, I hate to break this to you, but I’m quite sure it’s in the back spare room somewhere in a box.”
For a moment, he thinks she’ll spring off the couch and go find the offending object. She doesn’t though, she only smiles a little.
“I think we turned out okay in the end, even without the sleeping bags.” And Mulder has to agree with her.
Mulder and Scully discuss her old jacket.
@msrafterdark/msrafterdark's A concept : slow dancing on an ill lit front porch late in the evening while it’s thundering and maybe just starting to rain?
When they’re like this again, as though no time has passed, the pleasure of the familiarity is so good it almost hurts her. To have him well again, to be safe and wanted and in his arms is only made sweeter by the fact that the knocks and falls they have taken ultimately only made them stronger.
Mulder and Scully, the Unremarkable House and dancing.
@tofuttim's Comfort and Chaos (Ao3)
The rain pelted relentlessly against the windows of the small cabin. The night air was cold, but inside the cabin, a fire and a shared bed with Mulder kept her warm. The sound of the storm thrusted her thoughts back to the beginning.
The beginning of forever.
Scully asks Mulder what he remembers about their first case.
@defnotmeyo's (Ao3) The Cost of Living is Just Right
The beds are wrapped in white and light grey sheets with sky blue pillow cases on the spare pillows. The tables all look like something you would have seen on the Jetsons.
It takes a bit of time for Mulder to feel comfortable at Scully's apt.
Ingot Silver
“Birthday time, huh? We could go uh,” he licked some sauce off his finger as he moved a dish over to the sink, “we could go squatchin’.” He turned and winked at her.
Mulder learned plans an evening dinner for he and his Scully.
the “before i even needed glasses” line
Then, on days he doesn’t hate himself (and those days are multiplying and growing closer together all the time), he remembers he has a son, healthy and alive. He has the love of his life and while she’s not home yet, her toothbrush is back in his bathroom.
Post Cathedral episode Mulder isn't letting his homie get away ever again.
It really looks like Mulder when youre seeing two of everything.
“Mulder… you… you hurled a raccoon down our stairs.”
He shrugs, sheepish as ever.
“Like… you hurled him.”
“It was for Daggoo!”
A raccoon holds the Mulder-Scully household hostage.
I always laugh at that bit in detour where mulder is like “if ur lucky u get seventy-five (75) yrs. if ur rly lucky u get eighty
She refrains from rolling her eyes, instead slides in front of him and slinks an arm around him, patting that soft of his oblique threatening to turn into a love handle.
“Charlie has a decent head of hair,” Mulder mumbles.
“Charlie is four years younger. And you made it passed 50, Mulder. You won.”
Scully reassures Mulder he still looks gooooooooood.

“What, Mulder?” Scully shot up onto her elbows with her heart in her throat. “She’s just what?”
“It’s fine. She’s fine, Scully. She just looks like a he.”
Her jaw dropped. “What are you—are you sure?” Their slippery, pink baby covered in layers of vernix and blood mewled in protest as Mulder lifted the tiny bundle away from the comfort of his warm chest and pointed wide-eyed between its legs.

Collector's Edition: Cars and Conversations (Part I)
Mulder and Scully have traveled a lot a lot a lot during their years in the basement-- surely, they had pretty cool conversations on the road?
Loose chronological order below~
@wexleresque/hellsteeth's
stars
As he climbs into the passenger seat of his father’s Lincoln, Fox yawns. The dashboard clock reads 5:03 AM and the smug tilt of his mother’s lips suggests that the early hour is the result of considerable negotiation. The tires crunch on the driveway and his mother waves at him absentmindedly from the porch as they depart. She doesn’t make a habit of smiling, but in the dark, Fox thinks something close might be on her face.
The drive is quiet this morning, save for the news on the radio and the whistle of the wind through the cracked window. Sunflower seeds sail over the glass and Fox takes a few out of the bag, chewing on them for something to do.
“How’s work, Dad?” he asks as they pass Fall River.
Young Mulder is tossed back and forth by his begrudging parents.
the fbi basement bulletin board - Chapter 5 (Tumblr)
“Hm. Well you probably don’t need a medical professional to tell you this, but if you keep moving it around, it’s going to take longer to heal. You need to rest it.”
“Noted, doc. And you just missed the turn, by the way.”
S1 Mulder is bad at directions-- especially with a sprained wrist.
Local Radio (Tumblr)
Driving out to a little town in Indiana hadn't been in the original plan, but the business of Memorial Day weekend had removed flying as an option. They needed to reach their destination within 24 hours. So here they were, en route to another place that didn't even warrant a dot on the map (you've seen one, you've seen them all, he sometimes thought to himself).
Mulder is amused at a crazy radio station (and at Scully's reaction.)
Christine Leigh's (Alt. Ao3) Maybe?
"Okay, here we are." Maggie said this as she pulled off the highway and onto the road that would take them into Democrat Hot Springs. She was surprised that there wasn't more traffic. This town, if she remembered right, was supposed to be some sort of a resort area. Five more minutes, and they were in the parking lot looking up at the familiar sight of the neon arches, and that's all that mattered.
Captain Scully is back from deployment; and Maggie senses something is off with her youngest daughter.
@thatfragilecapricorn30's (Ao3) Tell Me You Love Me - Chapter 1
“How do you know where I live?” he asked.
Scully’s cheeks reddened; she was hoping he wouldn’t notice or find her actions inappropriate. “It was, uh, it was in your personnel file. I wrote down your address after you called me at home after the last case. I figured I may need it at some point.”
Mulder smiled. “Just trying to see if you’ve been spying on me.”
Post Deep Throat Scully can't shed her keyed-up nerves after driving Mulder back home.
@scullywolf's (Ao3)
Eve
Her eyes narrowed. “How far up north?”
“California’s a big state, Scully.”
“I’m aware of that. How far?”
He decided there was probably something very interesting over in the corner that merited staring at while he answered. “About 300 miles. Give or take.”
Eve Mulder sheepishly wakes Scully.
Red Museum
Sure, the old man wasn’t a member of the church, and similarities between him and Brother Andrew were all but nonexistent, but the cryptic “There’s something I’d like to show you,” with no further explanation, was enough to set her mental warning bells chiming. She was a grown woman, with a gun, but that didn’t mean she loved the idea of jumping into some random stranger’s truck after only the briefest of exchanges. Mulder joined her at the truck’s window, an unspoken question on his face.
Red Museum Scully communicates her anxieties to Mulder without a word.
Demons
The car company rep agreed to come and pick her up, and she sat down on the curb for only a minute or so before getting up again to pace off her nervous energy. A hundred horrible scenarios played themselves out in her head; at least ninety of them involved Mulder getting into car wrecks of varying degrees of seriousness. In order to keep herself from panicking, she tried to focus on the task at hand, which only made her angry that she was even in her current position in the first place.
Demons Scully has to call in a new rental car.
Drive
“All I’m saying,” she said pointedly, “is that it could be worse. We could be crammed in a room right now with a bunch of other agents, and instead we’re at least driving around through what you have to admit is some fairly scenic farmland.”
Mulder spared a moment to mourn their lost office.
Drive Scully appreciates being out in the field with Mulder again.
Dreamland II
"...Mulder, I’m not proud of how long it took me to realize what was going on. I was about ready to drag you in for an MRI. Some sort of delayed-effect brain trauma from your trip out to the Queen Anne was the only thing I could think of to account for your dramatic change in behavior. Only it wasn’t you at all–”
“Well, you believe it now, and that’s all that matters. Now how do we fix things?”
Dreamland II Mulder and Scully catch up before heading back into the fray.
@cactustree's (Ao3) Fast Times and Slow Drives
She startles when she feels a warm hand on top of hers, and her eyes snap open as though jolted by an electric shock. She looks over to find Mulder studying her, his eyes darkened with concern.
“Watch the road, Mulder,” she murmurs, pulling her hand away from his.
“What’s wrong, Scully?”
Post Genderbender Mulder banters away Scully's apology with facts.
@h0ldthiscat's (Ao3, Alt. Ao3)
Survivor
She swats him away with one of her small hands when he touches her head and helps her into the car, but the look she shoots him lacks her usual antagonism, and the purse of her lips doesn't quite convince him that she's annoyed.
"Do you want another one of these before we hit the road?" He shakes a half-empty bottle of Gatorade at her as he slides behind the wheel, but she shakes her head once, firmly, and presses her lips together in a thin line, making them even whiter than they are.
Post Darkness Falls Mulder drives them home.
7. things you said while we were driving
She shoves the sunshade back up and clears her throat. “Can we go?”
He notices for the first time that her eyes are wet, that her chin is quivering despite her best attempts to control it. Remorse and guilt wash over him as he remembers an offhand comment from earlier in the week that explains her makeup, her nicer-than-usual suit, the set of her jaw.
Post Never Again Mulder's remorse soothes Scully's feelings.
Can I ask for a fic tonight? :)
“Was the drive okay?” she asks.
Mulder jerks his head back to the still open door and says, “Ask your son, he drove.”
William appears in the doorway, duffel bag slung over his shoulder, tawny hair in his eyes. “It was fine, Mom.”
“Good,” she says, shooting daggers at Mulder with her eyes, daggers that say she can’t believe he let their son drive in a snowstorm....
AU-- Revival era Scully is not pleased Mulder let college age William drive back in a snowstorm.
@crossedbeams’s (Ao3) I-Spy
‘I love this song!’ I explain, whizzing the twizzler I have pilfered from Mulder’s junk food haul around in some vaguely rhythmic pattern. I love music I just lack the skill set to express that love very elegantly.
Mulder chuckles at my enthusiasm and cranks up the volume, ‘I never would have had you pegged as a Clapton fan’.

The thing was, it was next to impossible to see out the windshield.
Scully loved thunderstorms. Having spent a large portion of her youth in San Diego, they were still a novelty, even after years on other, more weather-prone bases and college campuses, and if she'd been home, she would have pulled up a chair next to her window and curled up there with a mug of tea, watching the light play in the sky and the water ping sharply against the glass.
However, as a driver she was cautious, and with Mulder, well, she had a reputation to uphold: He was the engine. She was the brake.
S1 Scully drives through a storm, donuts and a dozing partner included.
@brownies-and-tea/browniesandtea's Collect Call
“Mulder, it’s too late.” Scully sighed and leaned against the rain-streaked window of the car.
"I can't believe you're thinking fondly of that awful motel."
"I'm thinking fondly of a decent night's sleep." she stretched across the passenger seat.
S1 Mulder pursues a lead with Scully, from car to phone booth.
Ten's Learning to Breath (1/2)
In the elevator the women leaned him against one of the walls and kept talking to him, worried that otherwise he would go back to sleep and start sliding to the floor. Dana asked him questions, like his name and address, to keep him alert. She was relieved when she received the correct answers.
They got him into the backseat of Maggie's car, careful not to bump his head. Dana immediately raced around the car and got in the back herself. She fastened his seatbelt and watched as he leaned back against the headrest. He was asleep again before Maggie turned the key in the ignition.
AU-- Post One Breath Scully, Maggie, and Melissa are shocked at the state of Mulder's apartment.
J. C. Sun's Car Ride
My partner is next to me, as he always is, but for the first time in months, he's wearing his glasses. They make him look like an owl: a giant, somber six-foot owl perched in the driver's side seat. However, I doubt any owl has ever rolled his shirtsleeves up to the elbow and cradled a book in his lap, or chased the paranormal for a living. Nor do I think any owl has ever looked quite like him: the slightly twisted nose, the clear hazel eyes and the annoying, annoying little lock that, even now, droops across his forehead. It takes a wrench of will to resist the urge to reach out and to smooth it into place.
Post Firewalker Scully is bonded to Mulder now.

He is still just standing there, the sleeves on the turtleneck he didn’t need to wear pushed up at the elbows. She is suddenly, vividly aware of the car, of the hot metal and the smell of rubber in stagnant humidity. Duane Barry’s trunk smelled like a spare tire. Her mouth goes cloth-gag dry.
“Can we?” she asks. She waves her hand at the road ahead and wonders how she’s so sure of this: He’d have known what she was asking even if she hadn’t.
“Sure,” Mulder nods. He looks relieved. He grabs their flashlights from the glove compartment and hands her one, and the flood of Pfaster’s headlights behind her eyes softens and clarifies into two beams that will never outrun her. And they walk.
Post Irresistible Scully confronts Mulder on his bubble-wrap method of protection.
if you weren't so
She tilts her chin up at him, at the usual angle, and finds that the geometry between them is the same.
“I need to talk to you,” she says. “Something’s happened.”
Behind him, his not-wife drags a recliner over the threshold in reverse, yelling at the houses that all look like hers.
“I have to talk to you alone.”
She says “alone” like she always says it and wonders if she meant to do that. There are days when she’s sure she could leave him in the dirt and still wind up in a room with him at the end of the world. As they slip behind the truck, she's gripped by the idea that to Joanne Fletcher, she is the woman Mulder shouldn’t be with.
AU-- Dreamland II Mulder and Scully try to find a way back to each other.
theramblinrose's Irresistible - Chapter 5/Chapter 6
“I didn’t know when I’d hear from you,” Mulder said.
“I’m at the airport,” Scully said. “I’ve got a car. I’m driving in. I just wanted to call before I left.”
“Anything wrong?” Mulder asked.
“No,” Scully said. “Honestly—everything’s feeling pretty right, Mulder.”
AU-- Irresistible Mulder and Scully are juggling their new relationship, a surprise pregnancy, and the fallout from the nefarious Pfaster.
eponine119's Same Old Fight
-Turn it back, he'd insisted, his knuckles white on the steering wheel with the effort of keeping the car on the narrow twisting road, This is making me jumpy.
-I don't know why I let you drive.
-You didn't have any choice.
-Mulder, pull over and let me drive.
-No.
S2 Mulder rescues Scully after their blowout fight almost ends with an explosive conclusion.

Walter Skinner's 'From Left Field
"But I don't see why Skinner should care about the book. It didn't mention *him*, and it didn't even use our names." Scully stood in front of the bookcase, scanning the shelves. "We didn't divulge anything classified; I'm sure the reading public thinks the whole think is a joke."
"But they had the nerve to claim I ate *twelve* piece of sweet potato pie!"
She pulled the book down. "Skinner's going to complain about your eating habits?"
"But I *hate* sweet potato pie, Scully. You know that, remember? I turned green at the gills last Thanksgiving, when your sister-in-law offered me some."
Post Jose Chung's From Outer Space Skinner has his thoughts on the book.
Sweet Home D.C.
"But the reception . . ." She looked out the window at the 1 AM darkness. "I think we both need to get some sleep. Turn the radio back on if you want to."
He did.
<< . . . Sweet home, Alabama . . . where skies are so blue . . . sweet home, Alabama . . . Lord, I'm coming home to you . . .>>

“We’re not lost.” Mulder shot her a look then turned back to the road, correcting for the drift. “We’re directionally challenged.”

They have perfected the art of car eating. The driver orders and pays and hands the greasy bag over to be unpacked. The passenger unwraps the driver’s burger. They share fries.
When he pays she asks for the bare minimum and nothing too expensive. He orders extra large milkshakes and pretends he doesn’t see her stealing sips. They compensate for each other. Ketchup has not been spilled in years.
Mulder realizes he loves Scully.
Starbuck's (FFN) Wake Me When We Get There
"Shouldn't be much longer, Scully."
She made no acknowledgment, lying her head upon the seat once again. He continued driving as she drifted in and out of consciousness. White line. White line. Yellow line.
"Wake me when we get there, Mulder."
Mulder keeps the volume down so his partner can sleep on the long drive home.
@wtfmulder/@momdadimpoppunk's (Ao3) drabble; pay no mind
Scully paces around the car, branches and leaves snapping quietly under her weight. But she’s not angry, not at all, or nervous. She occasionally bends down to steal a sunflower seed from him and pauses to crack it before continuing her little loops.
Mulder and Scully find their own ways to entertain themselves when the rental car breaks down.
@incidental-ao3/incidental's Febuwhump 2023: The Truth is Out There (And the Fic is In Here) - Chapter 18
“No, Mulder, I should be keeping you awake, you’re the driver.”
“But I am awake,” he argued reasonably. “So there’s no reason for you to torture yourself when you could catch another few hours’ rest.”
“Don’t be dramatic, it’s not torture,” she scoffed. He smirked.
“Could’ve fooled me,” he said. She scowled sleepily.
Scully tries not to fall asleep, and Mulder ruminates on life before lights.
@mulderbabe77's Taco Stands and Regrets
He pushed down a little harder on the gas pedal.
“Are you gonna throw up?” He gulped, hoping to hear a no.
“Nope,” she answered and for a moment he almost sighed with relief. “The other thing, I think,” she finished, grimaced again and held a hand to her cramping stomach.
“I’m on it!” He sped the car up a little more.
Ten minutes later they could see the exit just ahead. Mulder was shifting uncomfortably in his seat.

They’d do this sometimes. Drive. They were always driving, it seemed. But when it was dark like this & he was scared like this, or tired like this, or just utterly numb like this, it was different. The curve of the road up ahead could feel like a whole conversation; the silence, an opening, & they’d both sit there, like staring at a sterile wound.
Mulder and Scully help each other decompress on long, long car drives late into the night.

“We helped keep the Germans from getting Thor’s Hammer.”
“Mhmm,” Scully hummed, turning the corner.
“It was Einstein, Scully. We protected Albert Einstein.”
“That was very good of us to do.”
Mulder and Scully, driving: hot ladies, aliens, cheek kisses, Triangle rambles, and Millennium contentedness.
Thank you for reading~
Enjoy!
**Note**: I am a "separate the art from the artist" person through-and-through; but my lists will no longer be featuring writers that have blocked me-- tooooooo much drama has been kicked up over that issue.

Mulder Was a Father, Even in the Desert
Tumblr media
I don't consider S9 canon; but--
S9, for all its illogical decisions and out of character moments and just... clown circusery in general, did at least one thing that was thought provoking:
Mulder was holed up with Gibson out in the desert; and most likely filled-in for that fatherly role Gibson didn't have. He'd have to teach him to shave, probably scold him about reading those thoughts, explain to him the bigger philosophy of adulthood, and be in awe of a growing pre-teen's strange wisdom of the world (especially through the filter of adulthood pressed so early on a specially gifted boy.)
And furthermore-- he was a father figure to a child older than Scully had ever parented. Emily died too early for Scully to mother; and William was adopted out before he was a year old. Scully had her nephews and her godson; but there would always be that "hands on" element that she never had. She missed older childhood while Mulder missed the parental firsts-- pregnancy, birth, baby milestones, toddlerhood, etc.
Mulder and Scully are patchwork parents, filling in each other's gaps and becoming a strange but stronger quilt for it.
Shoutout to @wtfmulder and @markwatneyandenesemble's headcanons compilation post that touched on this topic, making me stop to think.

X-Files Collector's Edition: Valentine's Day, the Platonic Way
It's Valentine's Day-- let's see how that day evolves over the course of Mulder and Scully's lives, separate and together.
Loose chronological order below~
Maidenjedi's Discovery
""I've been having dreams. I think I'm remembering what happened to my sister that night. I think I'm remembering her abduction, Diana. And I think this room might have some answers for me."
Diana had worked with abductees in her graduate studies, and the occasional case in the Behavioral Science division brought with it the usual implant stories. But she didn't believe in that sort of thing....did she?
She wasn't sure, now. She knew her partner to be a stable person. He could get obsessed with his work, tuning out the rest of the world while he focused on the profile. It was what made him stand out in Violent Crimes and gave him a reputation in the Bureau as one of the best field agents available. Reggie thought the world of him, and privately, so did Diana.""
Mulder excitedly tells Diana about finding the basement; and she digs around with him until it strikes midnight.
@wtfmulder/@momdadimpoppunk's (Ao3)
are those space pants (Ao3)
""So someone has not only arrived to work ridiculously early (or ridiculously late, considering the time he left), but they put a bunch of effort into sticking it to good ol’ Spooky Mulder.
He opens up his little Valentine’s Day card quickly, snatching his hands away as if the thing could snap his fingers in two. ‘YOU’RE OUT OF THIS WORLD, VALENTINE,’ it reads.""
S1 Mulder assumes the Valentine's card on his desk is mocking him. He's surprised it was a joint effort between Scully and Melissa.
@mappingthexfiles/Apostrophic's
The Patron Saint of Doomed Stakeouts
""She tried stretching her legs. Even at her short height, the brake pedal left her no space. “Switch places with me. I’ll trade you my soda,” she said. That’s how desperate she was. The offer was cruel, Mulder a foot taller.
He had leaned his seat back, a 45-degree angle. “Just slide the seat back.”
“Then I can’t reach the pedals.”
“Isn’t that the whole point?”
“And that’s when this guy shows up, takes off down the street?”
The look Mulder gave her said that of all the things in their life, a UFO landing in front of them would be more possible.""
Mulder is chafing on a boring Valentine's stakeout. Scully is a trooper; and the two of them banter back and forth to keep sane.
@suitablyaggrieved/ScullyLovesQueequeg
Unnamed
""The anger doesn't come out of nowhere. It happens after he catches a glimpse of Scully sitting quietly with a cup of coffee and reading. She's absorbed in her own world. She wasn't expecting the company, despite the fact that it's a Saturday afternoon in February--Valentine's Day to be precise. Around her, couples make eyes at each other, whispering sweet nothings to each other, and Scully is oblivious to it all.
So, what am I doing here? Mulder thinks to himself. They don't celebrate Valentine's Day--Scully because she is single and Mulder because he doesn't believe in it. But the anger is slowly building, the longer he watches Scully sitting alone.""
Mulder's sense of right burns that Scully is alone on Valentine's Days. He shoves himself into awkwardly celebrating; and is relieved she understands and goes along with it good-naturedly.
Something's Gotta Give
""I don't know if I should go out at all tonight..." Scully mused idly.
"Then don't. --Actually I don't really care. Don't listen to me. Go out with Pendrell or something." Mulder said, though not in an unkind way. His tone suggested in difference, though his body language was akin to frustration, as he jabbed the keys on his keyboard. "It's none of my business what goes on in your personal life."
"I'm not going with him." Scully said, sinking in to her chair that she kept beside Mulder's desk. He glanced over quickly, but resumed his frustrated typing.""
S3-4 Scully is bombed with chocolates for Valentine's Day. Mulder descends into jealousy and eats her candy. Scully asks him on a not-date, teasing him with his words from earlier.
Stephanie Lutz The Gift
""And now it was Valentine's Day. The most romantic day of the year. And her last romantic conquest was on his way to the psych ward. Which was where, half the time, she felt her partner belonged as well. <You really know how to pick 'em, Dana Katherine,> she muttered, yanking open her closet door just a bit harder than necessary. She pulled out a black skirt, black blouse, and a black jacket for good measure. For just a moment, she considered dying her hair black as well, but a soreness on the skin of her lower back reminded her than perhaps she'd done enough impulsive redesigning to last her a while.""
Post Never Again Mulder surprises Scully with a new desk for Valentine's Day... and an Elvis tie for himself.
Lolabeegood's (mulderscreek) My Funny Autopsy
""Really, there's..." she started as she walked towards the man holding the box "maybe they're from my mother."
Dana Scully slid off her surgical gloves and threw them into a nearby trash bin. "Thank you," she said as she took the box.
"If those are from your mother, I'm setting you up with this great guy on the third floor." Agent Flores called over to her.
Dana Scully opened the box and saw inside, a dozen perfect burnt orange tulips. They looked exactly like the color of her hair. She knew tulips were not in season, and wondered why her mother spent so much money on her for Valentine's Day. She still smiled though; her mother remembered that tulips are her favourite flower. She reached for the card and, opening it, didn't see her mother's handwriting but Mulder's chicken scratch.""
Cancer Arc Scully spends her day slicing and dicing good-naturedly with other pathologists. Mulder fetches tulips and food for her meds.
Pattie's
The Cupcake
""I know. When I found out Patterson had become, well, what he had become, I was too wrapped up trying to put myself in the killer's shoes. Which brings me to another subject. What about you?"
"Me? I'm fine, Mulder. As long as we do our jobs and the sun still rises, I'm fine. Don't worry about me. Maybe I'll be finished reading these messages before you get back." She smiled. That was a good thing.
"Ten minutes. Tops." He grabbed his coat and left Scully to her work.
Post Grotesque Mulder realizes that Scully feels left out for Valentine's Day. He gets her a little cupcake to celebrate.
(This fic is out of order chronologically; but the below story HAS to follow the cancer arc stories because that maxes the hilarity.)
Amore, Philadelphia Style
""Doesn't it bother you, Scully? This whole thing could start over again when we get closer to their agenda, unless someone comes up with a way to prevent that."
"We don't know that, Mulder. So, some day I will be able to remove it without developing cancer, and until then, there's still a lot of work to be done."
Mulder sat in resignation. He wasn't going to get them the day off to celebrate life as he had planned, but there was a pressing case that did need their attention. He grabbed pictures from a folder and passed them to Scully after she sat in the chair in front of his desk.
"Valentine's Day Cards, Mulder?""
Scully and Mulder celebrate her remission in the usual style: with a case. It takes a comedic turn when Mulder touches a pheromone tainted card and performs a nice little dance number for his partner. She whips out the cuffs for his own good.
Thalia D'Muse's I Lay a Rose Upon Your Grave
""Fox Mulder held the red rose in his hand, the thorns biting mercilessly into his skin. He ignored the pain, focusing all of his attention on the tombstone directly in front of him. He wiped a stray tear that had begun to make its descent down his cheek. He opened his mouth to speak, his voice low and thick with emotion.
"I...I'm sorry it's taken me so long to visit you. I should have been here sooner, but...well, you know how life has a tendency to overwhelm you. You more than anyone know what it's like to live a life against the odds, always wondering what's around the next corner. You had such courage in the face of adversity. I admire you for that.""
Mulder visits his first love's gravestone-- if his love were more tied to an icon than an actual person. Scully is not impressed to visit Elvis.
Enjoy!

X-Files Collector's Edition: The Crack Fic Life of One Fox Mulder
The crack fic continues.
I love all of these so, so, SO much-- Mulder crashing in on Scully at all hours of the night with his portals of love, clawing up Skinner's desk when transformed into a fox, laughing with Doggett over the Beverly Hillbillies black oil case, baffling Scully with his atrocious hair care choices, Teletubby-suiting into Area 51 with Scully, having a cheapskate for a mother, troubadouring after his S8 return, and more-- that I cannot recommend them enough.
Loose chronological order below~
Ao3: holograms - Works | Archive of Our Own
holograms's What the Fox
""Out of what she blames as compulsiveness to comfort, she pets him, taking special care to rub behind his ears.
He seems to like that. He lays his head in her lap, which is fine, it wouldn’t be the first time (she thinks of dark nights in forests while he sleeps with his head in her lap and asks her to sing), but he definitely didn’t purr before.
“This is weird,” she says, and he makes it even weirder by licking her hand.  “Gross, Mulder,” she mumbles, and wipes the fox saliva on his back.""
S5 Scully is stuck with a petulant Mulder (who's been cursed into fox form) while trying to locate the Greek goddess who cursed him (after he mouthed off to her.) The blend between real Mulder and his fox form is staggeringly impressive; and the belly rubs and subtle humor gets me EVERY time.
@spooky-nerd's (Ao3) You Send Me
""She questions him at length while they eat. "What were you doing when it appeared?" He notices that she seems to have conceded the point and wonders if she actually has come to believe him or if she is just biding her time until she's able to come up with an explanation that more neatly fits into the careful, rational confines of her worldview....
"Where did it appear?"
Right in front of him this time. All he'd had to do was slide his feet off the couch and jump in. That gets a reaction from her.
"You didn't think to investigate first before you just ... leapt right in?"
He shrugs and gets a devastating eye roll and head shake combination plus a mutter which is either 'some head of lettuce' or 'so impetuous', both of which he finds incredibly offensive.""
S5? Mulder is portaled into Scully's house over and over and over. Frohike tries to be intercessor; and Mulder uses his heartsick love for good by rescuing his grumpy lady love from a beast dog on a case.
syn's Careless Wishes
""Pendrell came in the room, with Melissa draped over his neck like a living boa. "Forget it guys," he sniffed disdainfully. "She's about a good a cook as she is a doctor."
Deep Throat and *X* winced.""
AU S5-- Scully decides it's a grand idea to bring her dead loved ones back to life with a wish potion; however, Melissa, Pendrell, X, Deep Throat, and Queequeg return to clutter up her apartment and insult her life choices.
eponine119′s Dreamland
““Hundreds of people every year fall pray to all manner of delusions - believing they are Napoleon, Joan of Arc, Cleopatra...even Elvis.  And they believe in UFOs, too.  Mulder should not  be taking this seriously, I thought.
"We're close to Dreamland," Elvis told us.
"Is that your house?"  The sarcasm stung in my mouth.  Graceland, Neverland, Dreamland...why were they looking at me like that?
"Area 51," Mulder said with relish.
Suddenly, I wanted to go home.””
AU Pre-Dreamland Mulder drags Scully to Las Vegas and finds old man Elvis. She is promptly dumped as Mulder chases after his obsession, apparently losing 6 days when they’re both captured by Morris Fletcher and his goons; and Scully nearly loses it several times while being swamped by reporters and Yappi (who secretly terrifies her.) This is the one and only time Kersh, Diana, and Jeffrey Spender actually help the duo (and the Bureau) out of a pickle.
Scully's-_laughter's Restricted Area
""How’s the autopsy going, Doc?” Mulder winced internally.
Scully proudly held up the metal blob, smiling.
“I was going for a human heart, but this laser is harder to control than it looks. It resembles Antarctica though, don’t you think? On the map?” She handed the piece of metal to him. “Might make a good key chain.”
Mulder looked like she just gave him an alien with a bow on top. Then he scrambled to put his key ring through the hole. He had no idea what Antarctica looked like on the map.""
AU-- Post Dreamland II Scully is dragged into TLG and Mulder's "raid Area 51" shenanigans... in Teletubby-tech bubble wrapped suits. There are, indeed, lasers; but what's more bothersome is Morris Fletcher's pee stream.
@wtfmulder's (Alt. Tumblr, Ao3) Neuro Nonsense (Ao3)
""After he found Scully on the floor of his apartment, covered in blood but no wounds save for the psychological ones, everything else was kind of a blur. When he collapsed to his knees beside her, she clung to him so desperately he didn’t know what to do with himself. So he simply held her, urged her to wash herself off, and drove her to the hospital.
When she stepped out of the shower she gave him an odd look, almost judgmental and pitying, but he assumed it was just her processing what happened. She was understandably subdued on the car ride to the ER. She wouldn’t look at him. He decided to give her some space and let her come to him when she was ready.""
Post Milagro Mulder misreads Scully's shock for PTSD. Days later, his 7-in-1 hair treatment is mysteriously replaced.
Alelou's (Xanadu) Continuity Serier 01
""SCULLY: Mulder, I didn't think you were all that fond of your family.
MULDER: It's really strange, Scully. Ever since Mom died, I feel much closer to her. I'm not sure why. I'm beginning to think it was really Connecticut I didn't like, not her. In North Carolina I feel much more connected to the whole family thing.
SCULLY: Mulder, why is your mother buried in North Carolina when your family never lived outside New England?""
AU-- Post All Things Mulder can't reciprocate, revealing his brain disease. Scully immediately turns it into an IVF discussion; and the transcript-style fic continues dissing and lampshading all the other horrendous S7 decisions.
Sab/Sabine/iamsab's Spooky Action At A Distance
""I'm Fox Mulder.
"Agent Mulder, I'm Dana Scully. I've been assigned to work with you," she said, in that way she had of refuting all of my hard-fought beliefs with one toss of her green hair. But I wasn't going to back down, not now, not ever. I'm a private eye. And I'm red-green colorblind, which is part of the reason my eyes are so private. One's red. The other's green. I think. How should I know? I'm colorblind.
"Mrs. Stevens, bring me a cup of coffee, and a towel so the lady can dry off from the rain," I shouted through the misted-glass door, forgetting that I didn't have a secretary or a misted-glass door. Mrs. Stevens returned seconds later and handed me an iced tea.
"Thank you, ma'am," I said, with a tip of the fedora. Mrs. Stevens straightened her stocking and exited through the misted-glass door I still didn't have. I gestured for the dame to sit down.""
Mulder is a quick talkin' noir detective-- slick and cool, living in grays and blacks-- while Scully lives in reality and observes his insanity.
Part 2 is below--
@seepunkrun/Punk Maneuverability (Ao3, Gossamer, DreamWidth)
Spooky Action Bonus Fun Hour
""The case was just like all the others except it involved time travel. I wore my best red/green, green/red, red or green tie. It was the same color as Scully's red-green hair, but it was all grey to me.
The rental car was black. It was a convertible. At the airport I pulled up to the curb alongside the dame in the skirt. Scully frowned and told me not to call her a dame, but she got in the car all the same. I knew she would. She's Scully.
Scully told me she knew who she was.
I told her I wasn't talking to her.""
Part 2 to Mulder's noir detective insanity: Mulder tries to convince Scully they are in the grips of alien time travel shenanigans, dragging her back to Oregon to get revenge on CSM. No revenge is had (or any clear goal or plan for that matter.)
jeri's (mulderscreek) X-Fools 1/ 2/ 3/ 4/
""The head honcho, whose human form reminds me disturbingly of Bill Clinton, speaks up. "Your skills are not needed presently, that is true. However, there's always the possibility that they may be needed in the future." Great. Happy happy joy joy....
^*^*^
I'm led to the control area of the ship; the bridge, I suppose Trekkers would call it. PseudoClinton motions for me to sit in Kirk's chair. I do, though I'm very wary right now.""
Within AU-- The Alien Bounty Hunter did not, in fact, want Mulder; but they form a nice little alliance by using Mulder's reinvigorated brain powers to spy on Krycek's plans. The aliens have a lot of compassion for Mulder, getting him in touch with Scully and FINALLY getting him to clue into his impending fatherhood. Oh, and the head alien, in payment for Mulder's good behavior, asks only one more thing from him: a shrubbery.
Alicia K. s (Alt. Gossamer, FFN) Guitar Hero
""Why does Mulder have a guitar?"
Skinner sighed. "He brought it with him. When the admitting nurse tried to take it from him, he protested. Violently."
Scully watched as Mulder competently strummed the acoustic guitar and sang. He looked happy as a clam.
"That's not Mulder," she announced. "Mulder couldn't play the guitar if his life depended on it.""
S8 AU-- Mulder is returned from his abduction unharmed but armed... with a troubadouring guitar. Scully's annoyance grows when he celebrates her announcement with a song; but it grows even stronger when he keeps TALKING in verse.
David Stoddard-Hunt's Pret' Near Midnight
""Mulder," Doggett said, taken aback by a sudden thought, "if Ms. Drysdale's uncle was like those men we encountered on the oil rig in the Gulf, then he woulda had the ability to infect other people without losin' the contagion himself, like with, uh, like how you found, early on."
"With Krycek," Mulder supplied sourly.
"Yeah," Doggett said mildly, "like with him. That would help to explain a lot of things, for me anyway, about, uh, out west."
"Hollyweird," Mulder snorted.""
S9-- Ellie Drysdale of 'The Beverly Hillbillies' fame calls up Monica and Doggett for help. Doggett and Mulder nearly split their sides laughing until Scully shuts them up with the fierceness of her wrath. Once they're sorted into better behavior, the gang realizes that the black oil was behind old man Drysdale's success the whole time.
Enjoy!
