despite this, the lack of information and compassion the average housed person displays towards the homeless is astounding. there is so much misinformation and outright lies that are accepted as common knowledge; so many pervasive, hurtful assumptions people hold about what causes homelessness, how we should be treated, and how to "fix" our problems. the scorn you are meant to hold for the unhoused is belied even by the everyday language we use. you are meant to abhor and pity the homeless. in a capitalist world, it is meant to be the worst, least respectable thing you can be. if you don't scorn and fear us, where's the motivation to stay unlike us? if you aren't terrified of losing everything, what else would keep you going back to shitty, abusive jobs? if we weren't forced to keep accepting sub-par wages and exploitative practices, where would all those record, extra, massive profits be coming from?

in truth, yes, becoming homeless is extremely traumatic. I've been chronically unhoused for over a decade now, and i still have nightmares and stress dreams about having to pack up my things and leave my current spot on short notice. being homeless is not something that anyone should ever be subjected to against their will. and yet, it is ALSO not the worst thing you can be. this is a sentiment I've been pleasantly surprised to find is shared by many homeless people.

the homeless are many and varied, and for such a diverse, massive category of people, its amazing how much we end up having in common, how similar our stories sound in the end. i see a lot of articles talking about statistics on homelessness, posts that express empathy for the homeless, but rarely do i see posts from and about homeless people themselves. not only do we want to share our own experiences, we want to share the experiences of other homeless people we meet, too.

our secondary reason for sharing is no less important: being seen is survival for us. neither of us can work conventionally due to a complex web of chronic illness and neurodivergency. i've had some success selling my art online in the past, so we're hoping to continue to do that, perhaps open up ko-fi subscriptions, and-- ideally-- sell art at fests and art fairs in the summer months, as well. while we're figuring that out, 100% of our survival expenses have come from donations-- usually from friends, frequently from kind strangers-- and very occasionally from an actual art sale or commission. figuring out which art supplies i can keep with me on the road has been a big challenge.
