OPENING THURSDAY. “Perle Fine: The Accordment Series” 2/13/20, 6-8pm. Perle Fine’s connection with Minimalism is clear. Kathleen Housley states in her seminal book, “Tranquil Power: The Art and Life of Perle Fine:” “Close in age and in temperament, Fine and [Agnes] Martin shared many similarities, one being that their art was routinely described by critics as ‘atmospheric’ and ‘classic.’” The two artists appeared together in a group show at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1962 called “Geometric Abstraction in America.” Perle Fine’s grids are set apart from minimalist tendencies by using colorful lines, planes of color, and sweeping brushstrokes. Housley states: “Fine’s unique strength was, and always had been, her use of color.” #perlefine #fine #9thstreet #9thstreetshow #9thstreetwomen #womenofabstractexpressionism #minimalism #colorpainting #asl #hanshofmann #hofstra #hamptonsartist #guildhall #accordment #accordmentseries #chelseagalleries #openingnight #artinstallation #openingreception #thursdaynight #galleryhopping #nycart #womenartists #womenartdealers #berrycampbell (at Berry Campbell) https://www.instagram.com/p/B8agUGyFq7B/?igshid=eba0ed2np4vy

Reposted from @berrycampbell CHARLOTTE PARK. Born in Concord, Massachusetts, Park studied from 1935 to 1939 at the Yale School of Fine Art. She met James Brooks while working at the Office of Strategic Services in Washington, D.C. during World War II. The two moved to New York City in 1945, where Park studied privately with the Australian artist Wallace Harrison. Brooks and Park soon became part of the circle of Jackson Pollock and his wife Lee Krasner. They rented a studio space that had been occupied by Pollock in NYC, and then joined Pollock and Krasner on Long Island. They stayed first in Montauk, but after their studio was destroyed by a hurricane in 1954, they moved to The Springs, East Hampton, which became their full-time residence. In the late 1950s, Park explored collage, concurrently with her contemporaries Krasner and Conrad Marca-Relli. It all starts here ! While working on my abstracts, I’m realizing that my process has been more color driven. I start with picking the colors that I’m attracted to most and then let them guide me intuitively. Also lately I rarely start with the end in mind, I just go with the flow and it’s more #artplay ☺️💕 . . . Do you’ll start with the end in mind or have a more go with the flow process ? 🎨👩🏽‍🎨 . . . #artflow #artflowsessions #colorlove #colorlovers #ihavethisthingwithfloors #ihavethisthingwithcolour #colorsplash #colorfactory #art #seattleartists #seattleartist #abstractartist #womenartists #womenofabstractexpressionism #abstractart (at Bellevue, Washington)

JANICE BIALA “Untitled” 1959, oil on paper, 10 1/2 x 11 1/2 inches. Signed and dated lower right. Provenance: Private Collection, Maryland] Janice Tworkov (1903-2000) changed her name to Biala to differentiate herself from her older brother, Abstract Expressionist Jack Tworkov. The artist-siblings, Jewish immigrants from Poland raised on the Lower East Side, lived divergent lives. Janice Biala moved to France during the interwar period, where she socialized with some of the leading writers and artists in Europe, including Picasso, Matisse, Gertrude Stein, and Brancusi. There she embraced the modernist innovations of synthetic cubism, making quiet cityscapes and interiors that emit the gray light of Paris. Biala's first exhibition was at the Passedoit Gallery in Manhattan in 1936. She exhibited at the Stable Gallery in 1954, 1956 and 1961. In the 1970s and ‘80s she was represented by the Gruenebaum Gallery in New York and in the 1990s by the Kouros Gallery, and is currently represented by Tibor de Nagy, New York. “Biala was a painter of impeccable taste and remarkable intelligence, She had an intuitive feeling for composition and her orchestration of color was, at times, breathtaking." Despite her love of Paris, Biala never gave up her United States citizenship. She was at home everywhere. ”I never have the feeling of nationality or roots,” she once said. ”I always had the feeling that I belong where my easel is.” [See JaniceBiala.org] #janicebiala #biala #womenofabstractexpressionism #abstractexpressionism #abstracted #nycart #paris #provincetown #1950s #stablegallery #womenartists #berrycampbell (at Berry Campbell) https://www.instagram.com/p/CD5RCjdFNHZ/?igshid=17p6cylvf1zaw

“Night Ride,” by Harriette Joffe. What at first appears to be an abstraction devolves into an image of horse and rider—or maybe it’s the opposite. Joffe often incorporated women and horses into her work as reciprocal images of beauty, grace and strength. #harriettejoffe #artonpaper #interiordesign #artadvisory #abstractart #womenofabstractexpressionism #femaleartist #womenartists #womenshistorymonth #abstractexpressionism #paintingoftheday https://www.instagram.com/p/CpRdaQusdBB/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Late in her career, the artist Harriette Joffe embarked on a series of works in watercolor on Yupo paper and inspired by the reflections, swirls and eddies in the Connecticut River near her home. Although ostensibly abstract, you can frequently make out a female shape or part of a horse’s body. She chose Yupo paper because of its translucent qualities—the colors darken and lighten and seem to move as the light changes and presumably how she experienced the moving, changing nature of the river. These works are exquisite and we have examples from the “Riversong Series” available. #harriettejoffe #contemporaryart #interiordesign #artadvisory #artonpaper #abstractart #femaleartist #womenofabstractexpressionism #paintingoftheday #abstractexpressionism #womanartist #femaleform https://www.instagram.com/p/Co6F_UWtkIU/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
