I'm so happy to see another wolreeq enjoyer! Do you have a favourite thing or detail about your wolreeq?
HI THANK YOU FOR ASKING I AM SO HAPPY TO MEET A FELLOW ENJOYER i most definitely have one favorite detail ;3 the most basic of which is that my wol and lue-reeq are similar in so many ways.
when i first met reeq in the story and he says that he's on this cardinal virtue hunt to become the greatest hunter of all time, i was immediately like oh, that's just like tart! bc my wol also initially set out as an adventurer and scion in order to become the greatest hero of eorzea, haha. she was really wrecked by the events of post-stormblood, and being transported to a new world presents a chance to start over, so meeting a guy who is just like how she was in the past really rekindled tart's adventuring spirit
they are both also really dumb. i was howling when reeq was like "heyyy bestie it just occurred to me i forgot to ask your name lol didn't we become best friends sooo fast?" like buddy. my man. he is so lucky to have met my wol, who after saving thancred from praetorium thought she should introduce herself to him. bc tart thought thancred had been possessed by lahabrea the entire time lmao. anyone else and reeq would be screwed
they are both prideful people, too. i can't say the biggest example bc i should be writing that for my fanfic (head in hands) but there's also how their pride blinds them to the perils of their quest. tart in being the warrior of light has gotten herself killed multiple times, but still charges ahead and acts as a hero out of pride. she was also completely unaware of how her fame would get her targeted by people like teledji. reeq is similar in how he sees himself capable of facing andreia alone, right? yeah there's that, but also
if you did the lvl 80 role quest before liberating eulmore from vauthry and ran'jit, there's a line of dialogue in the role quest which gets altered to reflect the msq progression
Tumblr media Tumblr media
reeq is a skilled archer. he's been passionate at it since childhood, and he is good enough at it to successfully hunt dangerous beasts-turned-sin-eater on his own. he wants to be acknowledged with this skill, so he thought to be the greatest hunter of all time, by defeating the current greatest hunter of all time. but she's now been turned to an angel, and here in angel city the god-king of mankind has declared that angels are not to be killed or defeated. and reeq is somehow completely blindsided by this fact. he's 18, there's little possibility he remembers eulmore before vauthry became dictator... but what he definitely remembers are stories about how hunters were famous and admired. he lets his pride as a hunter blind him to the obvious outcome
these two jumped into their respective quests without thinking, only looking to the eventual outcome that they'd be famous. they're shallow, dumb, too prideful for their own good. they don't deserve to be the heroes. and yet out of sheer dumb luck, tart being hydaelyn's chosen one, reeq being born a male mystel allowing him to avoid being taken by andreia, they're the ones who succeed.
then again, despite their shallow reasoning, they do it all because they find out that this is their calling. reeq says at the end of their adventure that he's never felt more alive than when he's on this journey with tart. that was how tart felt when she joined the scions, too. they grow to have deeper motivations, reeq to uphold the warriors of light's legacy, and tart to support alphinaud's resolve. they find their passions and do their best to be proper heroes
that's not even everything but i'll stop here www i didn't set out to ship my wol with reeq because they're similar, but it ends up becoming one of my favorite things about them! i love finding (and making up) parallels so much. they're both just little guys who are so lame and kinda suck. but they get better wwww
anyway thanks again for your question, i love talking about wolreeq so much especially mine--actually i've made a post about what i love about wolreeq in general too. but i love mine more hehe (i made up a ship name for them: lighthunter) please talk to me about them some more, i am demonstrably so normal and hinged about wolreeq. also have pics

peel
(a silly ficlet based on a wolqotd about oranges. it's catboy tart here btw)
"back," tart calls out as he enters reeq's suite. reeq waves from the balcony, reluctant to leave the warm spot under the afternoon sun. tart joins him bringing a sack of fruit. "granson's staying over. be back tomorrow," he says.
reeq, laying down on the floor, looks up at tart sitting beside him. "i'll let the others know. what have you got there?"
"oranges. mayor sai said hi."
"that's nice of him. peel one for me, would you?"
"mhm."
reeq shifts his forearm under his head, hums happily. it's a nice day. there's no more work to be done, he's finished cleaning up the place and watering the houseplants, and he has a partner to peel an orange for him to eat. now that's what he calls living-
living like a spoiled brat, his conscience pipes in. reeq jolts awake and grabs tart's hand, holding the orange. "on second thought, allow me!" he exclaims.
reeq shakes his head at himself. he's supposed to have become a better person, someone that tart can depend on! but what's this, now? do not slack on your efforts in self-improvement, lue-reeq!
he holds the fruit with both hands. the skin is tougher than he thought, his fingers unable to find purchase to peel it open. he leans closer, presses it harder, and--
"gah!!" --splits the fruit open with force, its juice spat directly into his eyes. nice shot!
he runs off to wash his face. returns and curls up facing away from his partner.
tart pats his head affectionately, peeling the rest of the skin without effort. "want some?"
"i don't deserve an orange," reeq wails.
tart snickers at him, reaches over and pokes his cheek with an orange segment. "aah," he prompts.
reeq opens his mouth and eats it. the orange is ripe, bursting with juice and pulp. it quickly fills his mouth with--oh. "this is," he gulps, feeling his face involuntarily grimace, "really..."
he looks at his partner. the man is ecstatic, so very amused that he cannot hold his giggles back. his feet kick as he laughs and his tail thumps on the floor, shaking with glee. unable to wait for reeq to finish his sentence, he fills in with an exclamation:
"tart!"
tart only makes himself laugh harder. reeq shakes his head at him. it's so unfair, who allowed the warrior of darkness to be so adorable?
he purses his lips to appear serious. "be honest with me, now. did you pick your name only for a situation like this?"
tart tilts his head and smirks, "what do you think?"
"no, you don't have that kind of foresight."
"hey!" his long tail smacks reeq's back. reeq laughs, then lies down with his head on tart's lap. he looks at his partner and smiles. "want me to find one that's sweet for you?" asks tart.
"no, i'll have the first. i'm sure the taste will grow on me," reeq says lightly, "and you can peel the rest of them for both of us." the request earns him a kiss on the forehead, and reeq considers it his just desserts.

FFXIV Write Day 1 - Envoy
(AU: Canon divergence)
I come as the envoy of the Crystal Exarch, who wishes to exchange in martial knowledge between the Crystarium and Eulmore.
Well, of course saying something like that wouldn't work on Ran'jit. Neither the general nor Vauthry gave much mind to the Exarch's warrior, brushing her off to be assigned with Eulmore's city guards. The Exarch had told her that she should just go along with their bidding--he likely has predicted Eulmore's disinterested response--so she does. Makes a trip down the city's enormous staircase towards the guards' base at the Understory.
Lack of interest is good. Means it'll be that much easier to snoop around and gather information. Shame that she has to waste time keeping up the facade, too, but... nothing to be done for that. Keeping out of the general's eagle eyes is important, after all--
"Aha! So you've arrived, soldier of the Crystarium!" She's only cracked the office door open when the voice calls out. A young miqo'te man sits on the largest desk in the room. He pushes himself off with a huff, looking pleased with himself. "Welcome to the headquarters of the greatest military force in Norvrandt! We're glad to have you here," the man exclaims. He approaches her with a grin, and extends a hand.
She looks around the room. Empty save for the two of them. The young man is of stocky build, but has a boyish cut to his dusty blue hair. He stands about half a head shorter than her. "Is this... the Captain's office?"
"Er, yes? I just told you that." The young man's smile wavers as she sizes him up, then quickly adds, "Oh, no, I'm not the captain of the guards, if you're wondering. That would be my father. But I am his second-in-command, and thus, your partner for the rest of your time here!" He offers another handshake. "I'm the first squad leader, Lue-Reeq."
She takes it. "Ash-Tart," she tells him, because it's the mystel-like name the Exarch told her to use during her time there, "but just Tart is fine."
"Oh? Then you can call me Reeq too!" he says, excited. "Though maybe that wouldn't be necessary since I'm your superior... no, no, we're partners. It's better to be familiar," he muses to himself. Then to her, "Pleased to make your acquiantance, Tart."
She smiles at his exuberance. "Looking forward to working with you. So. What's it you guys... do?"
Reeq grimaces. "Currently? Not... much. Not that that's a bad thing, of course! Ever since Lord Vauthry rose to his rule, the sin eaters around the city has fallen under his absolute control. Eulmore has become the perfect city of peace. It's a great thing, really! His Grace does an amazing job of keeping this city peaceful."
The city of peace. That was what Vauthry said in their meeting, too, she recalls. Despite formerly being Norvrandt's greatest military force, Eulmore is now defined by its peace. Ran'jit, the relic of its martial past, said nothing to contradict his liege either.
That peace is certainly evident. Lue-Reeq explains the duties of the city guards and shows her around to their stations around the Canopy and Gatetown. They clearly don't have much to do. The officers are doing the bare minimum of their job, and most points in Gatetown are unmanned, and the majority of Eulmore's military force seems to have disappeared altogether.
Don't like it, she thinks. It feels wrong. Like when Ishgard play-acted at achieving "peace". As a part of the Vigils, peace just isn't where Tart belongs.
And it seems that the same applies to Reeq. He covers it up with excitement and praise for Vauthry, but his words ring false. He's the only one showing interest at the arrival of the Crystarium's envoy. There must be something more to this man.
Her suspicions are confirmed at the end of the day. When they return to the Understory, Reeq announces that their work is finished.
"Already? It's only one bell past noon." Good thing, though. She can start the recon early. "Then, thanks for your hard work today. See you--"
"Wait, you're really leaving first before your superior? We're not quite done yet, you know!"
Highbloods everywhere are the same, she sighs. "Sorry, Ser. What do you have in mind?"
Reeq motions her to take a seat at the side of the main desk. He goes over to the other side and settles comfortably on the seat next to the Captain's. "So, since I've fulfilled Eulmore's side of the deal for today, isn't it time for the Crystarium to do the same?" He tries to be professional, but a devilish grin can't help but sneak onto his lips. "I hear the Crystarium still does regular sorties to cull sin eaters around Lakeland, is that correct? Can I ask where you were stationed before? Have you killed eaters yourself?"
Tart nods. "Was at Ostall Imperative for a while," it's not a lie, really, "and yes. I have killed a few."
"Oh come on, no need to be modest, I want to hear all the details!" Reeq reaches into a drawer and pulls out a journal. "I have a few questions to ask, if you don't mind. But you must spare no details! This is the point of our arrangement, yes? So please, talk my ears off!"
His excitement is contagious. Tart feels herself smile as she discusses the few clashes with eaters she's had after coming to this world. Then continues with stories of her other exploits, disguised as sin eater hunts. She gets more animated as she goes on, in response to Reeq's rapt investment.
They're the same, she thinks. He doesn't belong in Eulmore's peace either. She didn't know she hungers for his interest, in her, in warfare, in her knowledge of it, until she has it. It doesn't matter if this exchange is a sham to Vauthry and the Exarch. It's real to Reeq, so being here is worth it. This is no longer a waste of time, Tart concludes.
Being the envoy who brings war back into the city of peace may be the best assignment she's had yet.

FFXIV Write Day 20 - Hamper
(A loose rewrite of the lv 76 physical DPS role quest, continuing the previous entries)
Tart got out of her sleeping quarters, shaking off a headache.
Slitherbough's caverns made for a fine living space, but she couldn't get comfortable enough to sleep in there. The fresh air outside felt better already. The sun had just risen, its rays dappled the soil below through the forest's shade. She made her way to a nearby creek, sitting at its bank.
No, more than discomfort, it was the previous day's conversation that stole sleep from her. She thought back on it grimly.
She'd gone to meet Reeq after finishing the Scions' business in Rak'tika, and it seemed that no progress had been made in her absence. It was a little concerning. Reeq limited his efforts due to a lack of funds, he said, but couldn't one take amaros to travel for a pittance?
Tart shook her head. It wasn't her place to doubt her partner. What mattered was that he persevered, despite others' doubts. Determination was a good look on him, and Tart was happy enough to see it even without a lead to their quarry.
Though that lead they did gain. Reeq had asked her to recount the vision she'd gotten on their previous excursion to Amh Araeng. She'd seen into Andreia's past, of her life as Renda-Rae the hunter--and Reeq told her then that he'd heard the same story before. Back when he was a child, from his former servant.
They'd gone to see the woman then, Miss Olvara, who was very happy to see her charge grown--her adoration for Reeq was quite cute, Tart thought with a smile.
Olvara confirmed the tale as Tart had seen. Renda-Rae had been a great huntress in life. She began her adventure with a pair of friends, though the two fell one day to the great beast Balam-Quitz. Renda-Rae swore vengeance on the creature with all her heart. Olvara then filled in that, though Renda-Rae had gone on to be a Warrior of Light, her oath still weighed on her heart, and one day she broke off from her fellow warriors to enact her revenge. Renda-Rae confronted Balam-Quitz in the Citia Swamps and slayed it, alone.
"Citia Swamps, then," Reeq noted. There was their lead.
Renda-Rae had been a hunter in life, and Andreia was a hunter in undeath. She slew beasts and monsters, turning them into her minions to sow chaos. Then, as in life, she seeked to kill a great beast like Balam-Quitz again. She would surely return to the Citia Swamps to do so. And that was where Reeq and Tart would kill her.
Great, Tart thought. Just need to kill her. She had no love for the fallen Warrior of Light. They were the villains of this world. They had doomed their world to a calamity. Hells, these Warriors of Light had tried to bring a calamity to Tart's world as well. And in the process, Renda-Rae had nearly killed Alisaie.
Tart had no mercy for one who would kill her friend. None especially for one who had distressed Alphinaud so gravely. She leaned over the river's surface, intent on washing off the thoughts that hampered her.
And yet. Her reflection on the water made her pause.
Tart remembered the hunter as she'd seen her last. Finding out that the efforts to save their world were futile, Renda-Rae had wept in silent despair. She and the warriors had sacrificed everything for it, and it was no use.
Now the Warriors of Light were cursed as villains. Now their corpses walked the dying star, undead abominations bending their past heroic deeds to cause more deaths. Now Renda-Rae had to be killed by the only person who remembered her as she had been, once.
Tart submerged her head in the river and screamed. She just had to kill Andreia. All would be well if she killed Andreia. Remember what she had done to Alisaie, to Alphinaud? Blackguard. Scum. Bitch. Just kill her and get it over with!
She took a breath and screamed again for good measure. When the bubbles ceased, she surfaced, shaking off the wetness from her hair--
Only to see Reeq rush toward her in panic.
"Light preserve, are you all right?!" he looked her over frantically. "You were in there for a long time, and it looked like you exhausted your breath--did you inhale any water?"
Tart shook her head. "No worries. I can breathe underwater."
Reeq's mouth hung open for two seconds. "That's not funny!" he yelled, though she wasn't joking. He ran his palm over his face. "Wicked white, I don't need this today. Please don't make this harder than it should be," he groaned.
"Sorry," Tart said quietly. She was, in truth, not the only person who knew of Renda-Rae as she had been in life--the same could be said about Olvara and Reeq, too. The woman had told the tale of the great hunter to her young master, though never revealing her name. And the boy grew up wanting to be just like that hero. So he stood here now, a hunter following Renda-Rae's footsteps. Having just found out that his hero and quarry were one and the same.
Tart stood up, leaning over Reeq to get a better look. He was a bit pale, his eyes were dark, and he inched away from her approach. She dared a question, "Does the identity of our target bother you?"
Reeq was still, frozen for a moment. Then he waved it off with a guffaw. "No, no, it's only... that I've never slept in a cavern before, so I had a bit of trouble going to bed! It gets awfully damp," he paused, remembering his position, "but! But, ahh, do tell Master--um, your Ronso friend. Please give him my thanks for allowing us to stay the night in the village. It was very kind of him."
Tart grinned. "Ask for Runar and tell him yourself."
"Ugh, well I suppose we'll be heading back to Slitherbough for our belongings, anyhow." He walked ahead of her--but stopped a few paces before the village's entrance.
"It's for the best, right?" he said. "If we kill Andreia, then she would stop creating sin eaters out of beasts and endangering people's lives."
"It is."
Reeq glanced at her and nodded. As he left, Tart made the decision. The woman she remembered was dead, this young man was living. Do it for the ones you can still help, right now.

thinking i'd repost my answer to this wol question bc it gave me a bunch of neat thoughts
from @.PeachyArts1031: #wolqotd I’ll never tire of “To be loved is to be changed” Our WoLs/OCs have all changed. But tell me- Who has your WoL/OC’s love changed? Who has grown due to spending time with your OC? An NPC? Maybe another OC even? What impact has your character had on others?
i'm vibrating w so much emotion abt how tart's love has changed lue-reeq but i shouldn't bc that's the point of writing fic lol. i will however indulge in thinking about how it doesn't even have to be my oc specifically. lue-reeq is always changed by the wol caring about him
his character development is incited by how despite the wol not having any incentive to help him whatsoever, they still care enough to seek him out when he's missing. it turns out he matters! beyond the money he can give his hirelings as payment, and the fame that his family would gain from his deeds, lue-reeq matters to someone!
reeq's flaw is that he just thinks of the destination and doesn't care abt the journey. who cares abt procuring bait, what matters is we catch the prey. who cares abt the virtue's past, what matters is we kill her. and this v obviously stems from how his father treats him: not giving a single shit about how reeq's doing, only if he's successful yet or is he still asking for allowance. who cares abt the hard time he's having, the danger he's facing, what matters is that he makes his father proud by being the best hunter. this ends up extending towards the wol in an awful way when they struggle w the echo. who cares abt their pain, what matters is that they're performing their job badly. they're keeping reeq from achieving his goals, *the only thing that matters*. no one cares abt lue-reeq, so he doesn't care abt anyone either.
this parallels renda-rae's outlook, though in her case it was born from survivor's guilt, and it wasn't that no one cared about her; she just didn't let anyone in out of fear. but the outcome is similar: she didn't care if she died, the only thing that mattered was avenging her friends. and then ardbert and the others had to be like WE CARE YOU THOUGH!!! so now it's the wol who has to show lue-reeq that they care him!!
isn't it neat that they're both changed by love. for renda-rae it's literally so profound that it influences her after death. andreia looks for her friends first bc the journey w them matters more than killing prey. reeq also changes bc he knows he matters to the wol. it opens his eyes to the value of the journey to get there, not just the destination. the effort he puts in matters to someone, even if it won't have the best result. so in contrast to his earlier behavior, reeq insists that he should procure materials for the wol. i think it's a good way to show his development, esp bc he's bad at it!! but it's ok bc he did it himself, and that's what wol taught him. reeq becomes a better person bc we care him :'D
i love the shb physical dps role quest soooo much. i know everyone says it's the weakest story of the bunch, but like we all agree it's still pretty good at least bc of the silly catboy's character development in it. and it brings me a lot of joy to think that said character development happens bc we show him some love for once!!
anyway fetch quest fantasy xiv gives me a character who does the fetch quest for me one (1) time and i'm insane abt him forever. i hope they do this again someday

FFXIVWrite Day 4 - Off the Hook
(AU: Canon divergence)
Tart scowls as she follows Reeq out of the Honeybee. Notably without a serial harrasser dragged out in handcuffs, despite the elezen being caught red-handed. "You said he's a repeat offender. Just gonna let him go?"
He shrugs. "What other option is there?"
"Dungeon."
"We don't have a dungeon to shove citizens into."
"Yes you do." Many of them, in fact, hide within the city's underground.
"Well, but we don't--hang on," Reeq eyes her carefully, "how do you know that? I never showed you around there."
Shit. She tries to creep away, but it only makes Reeq narrow his eyes. "Tart... have you been patrolling on your own?"
She nods slowly. Let him think what he will, if she argues then her cover may be blown. Though Reeq looks more concerned than suspicious.
"Why would you work more than necessary? It's not as if you need to, we barely have anything to do anyway!" He shakes his head. "I don't think I've ever seen you somewhere other than here and the training grounds. So you spend the rest of your time around Gatetown instead, working after hours?"
It's not like I have another choice, Tart thinks to herself. She's here to gather information on Eulmore's abandoned methods of fighting sin eaters for the Crystal Exarch, not to idle away. She chews her inner cheek. "Helping people is fun," she mumbles.
"Is that so?" Reeq hums, discontented. "Then, would you take me with you?"
"Huh?"
"If you say it's fun, then that means you're seeing some action, right? I don't want to miss out on that!" he exclaims.
Tart wonders if having a partner isn't more trouble than it's worth. "Hm. Then, if you can show some action to law-breaking citizens next time, I'll consider it," she tells him with a grin.
Reeq doesn't rise to the bait. "Riiight, I know you say that because most laws don't apply to the free citizens," he sighs, waving as he walks ahead. "Fine, go on your secret errands all you want, I won't pry."
Tart watches him leave, relieved in part. Though part of her does appreciate the offer, and wishes she can make good on it.
