Steam Hams anyone?
It’s the day before Hearth’s Warming Eve and after a great song, Twilight is doing the Twilight thing and panicking because she’s still got a lot to do and little time left. So AJ thinks of doing a Hearthwarming Helper to ease Twilight’s troubles. It’s basically a Secret Santa or in G5’s Case “Secret Canter” but with the ability to buy gifts.
So the episode splits into 6 short stories. Twilight, Rarity, Applejack and Fluttershy, Rainbow Dash and Discord, Spike and finally Pinkie Pie. Each one is interesting in their own way so let’s speedrun them...
Spike - He wants to get Rarity as his Hearthwarming Helper and first has to figure out which one has Rarity to trade. Some funny bits but he eventually gets her. Sadly, he spent so much time trying to find Rarity he forgot about what to get her. So he tried making her something but was so tired he fell asleep.
AJ/Fly - After trading with Spike, Applejack and Fluttershy head to Rainbow Falls to find a gift for their Secret Santa. But Fluttershy got scammed by Flim and Flam and spent all her bits on a doll that nobody in their right mind would want. So to save everyone else, they put up an act that gets the customers to avoid buying it, but now they’re stuck with giving said dolls as gifts.
Rarity - Rarity got Applejack and ordered a new hat for her. But the Post Office accidentally sent it to Sweet Acorn Acres instead. Rarity tries to get it but finds a colt who just loved the hat. Even though he knew she came to get the hat, she refuses to take it because it suits him better. And he even invites him to the Manehattan Fashion Week.
RD/Discord - Rainbow Dash has Fluttershy and she is a hard person to give gifts to (take my advice, money is the best gift). So when she got a Candle, Discord came to persuade Dash to get a different gift. His suggestion: a Winterchilla. Dash goes for it hook line and sinker but unknown to her, when it becomes nightfall they become Winterzillas. So a Winterzilla is heading towards the castle.
Twilight - Twilight got Pinkie Pie, so she thought it would be pretty easy. But after Spike says that the gift has to be extra special, Twily goes Twilynanas and begins focusing so hard on getting Pinkie Pie the Best Gift Ever. Her idea: Chancellor Puddinghead’s Pudding. During this time, Shining, Cadence and Flurry arrive knowing that Twily is going Twilynanas but knows its best to talk to her when she calms down. Too bad they weren’t paying attention to Flurry Heart.
Pinkie - And Pinkie Pie got Twilight Sparkle. She had matching hats for everyone but now that she can only give one gift, it has to be the Best Gift Ever. And who better than the Yaks to find the Best Gift Ever? Apparently the Gift Givers of the Grove. Luckily Rufforford got a map to them. At their cabin, they show the power to see the Gifts of Past, Present and Future and after seeing the cards at play, know the perfect gift for Pinkie Pie.
So when it comes time for the party, the Winterzilla is attacking, the Pudding is a Blob and honestly seems pretty tame compared to Black Friday. Fluttershy tames the Winterzilla as Pinkie’s Gift fixes the Pudding. It is wrapped up pretty neatly with a song that I think grew on me overtime. So overall, it is a fun holiday special with some nice cameos, good songs and fun stories. Sadly it can’t be canon, but maybe I could rewrite it with my Twilight in mind.

Card Shark 91: Winterzilla, Giant Gremlin
Hey there, friends! Welcome back to Card Shark! I’m still coming down from my win at the Harmony Tournament at Vanhoover Pony Expo (!!!) and I’m super motivated to bring you new CCG content! Today I’m looking at what may be the best Troublemaker from the newest MLP:CCG set - I thought it’d be fitting due to the chilly weather outside. Who knew Troublemakers could be so snuggly? Let’s take a look at “Winterzilla, Giant Gremlin!”
Yes, Rainbow Dash, everypony DOES know that winterchillas essentially become werewolves after dark, and knowing is half the battle. This is a 4 power Troublemaker that earns you 1 point when it is defeated. Not the most uncommon thing to see on Troublemakers, though I’ll admit it’s not my favorite since they can be fairly easy to defeat. Now, when the Winterzilla is turned face-up (it may or may not be formally uncovered), you have the option to pay 1 AT. If you do? You dismiss an opponent’s Resource! Simple as that! As the Set 11 cards were being released, it was teased there would be a practically colorless Resource removal card. Guess what? This is that card! And it is pretty great. You’re paying essentially 2 AT for Resource removal, which is nothing to sneeze at considering this card’s lack of color. As mentioned, it does grant your opponent 1 bonus point should they defeat it, but I would say that that bonus point is warranted considering how vital Resource removal is to players of any deck style and color(s), and you’ve got quite a few ways to make Troublemaker Faceoffs more painful for your opponent (with cards like Applejack and Twilight Sparkle, Soup Du Jour, Through the Ages, and Spooky Ruins, for example). All and all, for a relatively small Troublemaker, I love it! As a whole, I’m not a fan of low power Troublemakers that grant points with no in-Faceoff ability. I can make an exception for this one.
It’s called a gremlin for a reason. Generally, if a Troublemaker is going to have low power, I prefer the ones that may do something multiple times and have a longer-lasting effect. Wild Manticore is a good example of one of those. But this? Ehh... not so much. I’ll give it to the “turned face-up” aspect of the card - that makes it a lot more intimidating. Simply being “uncovered,” like Nightmare Moon or Tempest Shadow, Easy as Pie doesn’t grant that extra punch. But if your goal is to repeatedly unveil these things and get rid of opposing Resources, your opponent will quickly catch on. Of course, you don’t have to pay that 1 AT (it is a you may trigger), but let’s be real, there probably isn’t another reason you’re running this Troublemaker beyond the Resource removal. Grubber, Minion can do the same Problem safeguarding job just fine with 1 additional power and 0 bonus points. Am I calling it a bad strategy? Not exactly... I’m just saying that even with the support this card has, it may end up being predictable and avoidable. The 4 power, like I’ve said, also makes it an easier card for your opponent to defeat, and there aren’t a lot of cards that allow you to retrieve Troublemakers from your discard pile if you want to reuse a single Winterzilla copy. I hate to be this critical of a Troublemaker I really like - it’s a big fluffy beast that can get rid of Resources, and that’s beautiful! You just need to know the right time to release the big fluffy beast.
Here’s a few more cards that want some winterzilla snuggles:
*Pow, Loyal Henchpony. Due to the flexibility of Winterzilla, I’ve got a wide array of colors for you to work with! Let’s start with Orange. Pow here can keep a Troublemaker in play when they would be dismissed by turning them face-down. He also can’t be frightened, so if your opponent would spring a Prince Rutherford on you, they can’t hit this card with him. He’s like a better version of The Smooze, Creeping Crud, as he can stop the defeat of a Troublemaker multiple times and doesn’t exactly lose the same type of power by doing so. You may want to be careful when doing this, though - I’m not sure if Pow stops your opponent from gaining the additional point when they defeat your Winterzilla.
*Strawberry Sunrise, Morning Pony. One of my favorite Season 7 characters! The Pink/Yellow Strawberry can be Immediately moved to a Problem and turn a Troublemaker at that Problem face-down. What you can do with her and Winterzilla in this case is turn Winterzilla face-up, dismiss your opponent’s Resource, move Strawberry to the Problem (with Agile or not), and turn Winterzilla face-down again so you can repeat the Resource dismissal process. I like Strawberry better than Pow since she can stop the Troublemaker Faceoffs before they begin. However, it is a bit of a pricier move than Pow as Strawberry doesn’t have Swift to decrease her move cost. Watch your AT!
*Grogar, Tactical Consideration. One of my favorite cards to come out of Set 11, this Blue/Purple Grogar gives you the option to delay the reveal of one of your face-down Troublemakers for however long you please. I like this since it also gives you control over what Problem to reveal your Troublemaker at in case you or your opponent run something like Lacking Lesson Plans. You can also watch and wait until your opponent plays a Resource you know would be especially dangerous for you, so Winterzilla’s dismissal will be as beneficial for you as possible. Grogar isn’t a cheap Friend color req-wise - that’s 3 Purple and 3 Blue you need to save up - but his payout is worth it.
*Cerberus, Tartarus Guard. No White representation on this list, sorry. :( This Cerberus Troublemaker has been a popular one among certain competitive decks for its ability to turn another Troublemaker face-down (particularly Tempest Shadow, Easy as Pie), but that ability also works with Winterzilla. After Winterzilla turns face-up and you dismiss that Resource, you can play Cerberus and subsequently uncover it to turn Winterzilla face-down again. Should your opponent defeat Cerberus, they fortunately gain 0 bonus points and can’t stop Cerberus’ Troublemaker turnover. This is one you have to watch, though, as Cerberus explicitly says it must be uncovered to turn another Troublemaker face-down, not just turned face-up like Winterzilla.

MLP Post-Season 8 Adventures: The Return of the Phantom Ruby
*Meanwhile at Twilight’s Castle in Hearth’s Warming Eve, Delta joined with the ponies for some pudding, and he looks at the Winterzilla.*
[Delta Brony] “The Winterchilla, one of the most rarest creatures in all of Equestria, but this... is the Winterzilla. How did it came to your castle Twilight?”
[Twilight Sparkle] “Well, it was Rainbow Dash and Discord. But somehow Fluttershy found a way to tame it.”
[Rainbow Dash] “It almost ate the decorations.”
*Delta Brony eats a chunk of pudding and says...*
[Delta Brony] “This pudding is sensational. Did you made it yourself?”
[Twilight Sparkle] “Of course, with the help from Pinkie Pie and the magical recipe.”
[Delta Brony] “Ah, I thought it was green slime. So, when is big beasty gonna shrink down to its normal size?”
[Fluttershy] “The Winterzilla should be back to normal in the morning. He is so fluffy and cute.”
[Rarity] “You never gonna believe this. I met the ponies at Sweet Acorn Orchard. They were pretty nice.”
[Delta Brony] “Hey, one of my pals came from that place when I was a filly. Hope you had a great time there.”
[Rarity] “You should go there one day darling.”
[Pinkie Pie] “Hey, you want to have a snowball fight?”
[Applejack] “Heh. Since you mentioned it Pinkie.”
*Outside of the castle, they began their snowball fight.*
[Twilight Sparkle] “Heads up everypony.”
*Twilight throws a snowball at Rainbow Dash and hits her*
[Rainbow Dash] “(laughing) Hahaha!! good one Twilight.”
[Pinkie Pie] “Ok, Applejack is in my sights.”
[Applejack] “I got you now Pinkie Pie”
[Pinkie Pie] “AH HA!! (Gets hit by Fluttershy)
[Fluttershy] “Oops, sorry Pinkie.”
[Applejack] “Looks like you didn’t saw it coming. (Gets hit by Rarity)
**Applejack, Rarity, Fluttershy, and Pinkie Pie laugh at each other.*
[Delta Brony] “Oh, you ponies are in for it now!! HEY EVERYPONY!!”
*The Mane 6 look at Delta with a bunch of snowballs*
[Delta Brony] “Snowballs incoming!!”
*Delta hurls a bunch of snowballs at the ponies* that are laughing and some of snowballs hit them*
[Delta Brony] “Haha!! I am not done yet.”
*Delta Brony pulls out a snowball, but the snow fell off, revealing to be the Phantom Ruby, which teleports him out of Equestria*
[Twilight Sparkle] “(Gasp) DELTA!!”
[Applejack] “What just happened?”
[Twilight Sparkle] “Let’s ask your question with another. Was THAT the Phantom Ruby?!!”
[Delta Brony] “Up here!!”
*The ponies look up and sees that Delta is up on the top of the castle*
[Twilight Sparkle] “Hey. You might want to come down here.”
*Delta Brony flies down to reunite with the Mane 6*
[Delta Brony] “I can’t believe my eyes. I was about to throw a snowball, but turns out that the Phantom Ruby was covered in snow. How can it be here?”
[Twilight Sparkle] “The last time someone took hold of it, it was Princess Dark Matter. She lost control of it and she was sent to oblivion.”
[Delta Brony] “And now I have the Phantom Ruby in my possession. Do you know what this means?”
[Twilight Sparkle] “It means, you can teleport yourself to another dimension, etc.”
[Delta Brony] “It also has something to do with reality. It might be something useful for me if I get use to this. I’ll do a little research on the ruby and run a few tests.”

Things I Loved Most About the MLP Christmas Special
1.) Hasbro actually allowed the writers to make an anti-commercialism Christmas episode.
2.) A Hasbro show is actually allowed to poke fun at those silly “must-have” toy trends and how ridiculous they are. (Seriously, we now live in a world where a “must-have” snow cone machine is $299.99 and a pterodactyl drone is just under $100.00? That deserves all the lampshading it can get!)
3.) The winterchilla and Pistachio were really cute. Especially Pistachio.
TL;DR: The Flim and Flam parody bits were actually really subversive and funny for a toy company show, and Pistachio and Coco should absolutely meet up when he goes to Fashion Week. Also, Coco needs one of those couture cowboy hats in red.

Watching Best Gift Ever way too closely (fluttercord outlook)
I wanna start off by saying that it’s my favorite episode, especially my favorite holiday special.
Discord being surprised that Fluttershy got him anything, considering he wasn’t invited to the party.
THe GIFT ITSELF! It’s that one knitted teapot cozy, that she made back in Fake It ‘Til You Make It. Considering we know Discord can knit, I can only imagine that she tried it because she wanted to have another activity that they could both enjoy! (Also its adorable that Fluttershy can sew and cross-stitch, but has a hard time knitting)

4. Him being annoyed Rainbow Dash threw away Fluttershy’s gift for her (he probably didn’t know he’s getting something too)

It’s the BEST... GIFT... EVER!!! (Best... Gift... Ever...)
Its the day before Hearth’s Warming Eve and everyone is doing some last minute things.
The Student Six are indeed going home for the Holidays. Considering Gallus has no one to celebrate it, I have a headcanon that says he is going to rotate spending the holidays with one of them. Starting off with Silverstream since her holiday has the least preparation needed to participate. Also, shipping.
And if you’re wondering why Starlight Glimmer isn’t here, she’s gonna spend it with her friend Trixie. Will they go to the Crystal Empire to hang with Sunburst? Or Sire’s Hollow to be with Starlight’s father. Who knows? But as soon as those two pass by, we get our song.
Now comes the opening song, which I found quite enjoyable. They’re singing that its one last day before they could get everything ready for Hearth’s Warming, but its worded so you can actually use this for Christmas. So here’s some highlights...
The Pies and Apples are back together, and they brought along a Pear. It is nice to see them. But there is one more guest missing from this equation...
Sugar Belle is gonna join in the festivities. She is pretty close to an Apple after all. Say, I wonder how Marble feels about her?
Oh... By now you noticed that there isn’t a “Review/Rewrite” on this like my previous MLP reviews. I think the next story will focus on this special.
Is this a Home Alone Reference?
If you’re making a Christmas Special, it would be nice to reference your forefathers of Christmas Specials.
While I have not seen either movie, I do hope this is a reference to a Christmas Vacation and not Elf.
And Twilight is going, as this special coined the phrase, Twilynanas. She still has to decorate the castle because Shining’s Family is coming over and get everyone’s gifts. But Applejack calms her down and decided to make things easier for her...
With everyone’s approval (though Pinkie was reluctant), they decided to do a Secret Santa (Hearth's Warming Helper) so they only have to get one gift for the pony they pick. Twilight got Pinkie Pie, Pinkie got Twilight, Rarity got Applejack, Spike got Rainbow Dash, Applejack got Spike, Rainbow Dash got Fluttershy and Flutrershy Got Rarity.
I’m gonna split up the story telling by Gift-Giver for now. Starting with Spike, who wishes to get Rarity’s. He asks if its okay to trade, which AJ said it is if he can figure out who got who. Before he could fully ask, she didn’t get Rarity. He tries Twilight and Pinkie, but eventually Fluttershy sort of agrees to trade. He spends the rest of the episode until the climax trying to make a gift for Rarity.
Pinkie doesn’t know what to get Twilight. She had gifts for everyone that matched each other, but one gift alone can’t be matched up. So after a talk with her sisters, she decides to go to the ones who would be BEST GIFT GIVERS: the Yaks. This one is fun so I’ll get back to this.
Fluttershy has the Batman dilemma: what do you get for the person who doesn’t seem to want anything? So while Batman decides cash (because who wouldn’t want money?), Rainbow Dash gets a Candle. Discord arrives to ensure that she gets something truly great for Fluttershy: a Winterchilla. I’ll point out a reference from these two later, but that boils down their story.
Fluttershy and AJ goes to Rainbow Falls to get their gifts. But Flim and Flam are there and tricked Fluttershy into buying a cheap doll that they say is the must have gift of the season. The two eventually save others from buying more of it but they are stuck with those gifts. Though AJ seems to enjoy stomping on Flim and Flam’s schemes.
Back with Pinkie Pie, the Prince reveals a secret to her: the Yaks are best at everything except one thing: Gift Giving. But Prince Rutherford gives her a map to the best gift givers known. We’ll get back to her later.
Rarity ordered a gift for Applejack. But due to a mailing mishap, it is sent to a completely different Farm. Not wanting to deal with the Postal Service (and I don’t blame her), Rarity decides to go to the farm herself. Muffins, meanwhile, you know works at the Post Office because despite all the windows there’s only one worker and they’re taking a break JUST WHEN YOU NEED THEM!!! This is why everyone does things online now. We’ll get back to Rarity soon.
And Twilight, thanks to Spike, is going Twilynanas to try to figure out the best possible gift for Pinkie Pie. Then it comes to her...
PUDDING! Specially Chancellor Puddinghead’s Pudding. It was made after the founding of Equestria and was considered Legendary. But its not in his book, but a spell book she found after 4 hours of researching.
Thing is she lost track of time and Shining and her family arrived. Daww, Flurry Heart looks so cute! But as you expected, the decorations aren’t up yet.
They pretty much know she’s obsessing over something, and once she is done they do talk that they could have helped with her Hearth’s Warming Helper gift instead of her going Twilynanas. But as her pudding is cooking, Flurry puts some more ingredients when it has to be specific.
Pinkie’s Quest to find the Gift Givers is complete. They introduce themselves and reveal to us and reveal that they’re similar to the Ghosts of Christmas Carols. One knows your past, one knows your future and one make sure the present is retained. So they got the perfect gift needed for Twilight. And they also give her a riddle.
G.I. JOE!!!
Back with Rarity, she finds the farm but they mistook it for themselves. This inspired their son to really go after fashion. After lunch, he was willing to give it back knowing it wasn’t for him, but she lets him keep it and also promises to make him her guest at Fashion Week.
And when everyone reunites: the pudding becomes the Blob and the Winterchilla becomes a WinterZilla when the sun sets. Long story short, because you got to see it, Fluttershy tames the Snowzilla and Pinkie’s Gift for Twilight is what fixes the Pudding.
In the wrap up, Rarity told AJ about her gift going to someone else, when AJ says that her father told her sometimes the hat chooses its wearer. So while she may have a dozen or more, they are still special to her.
Discord’s gift to everyone is destroying those dolls. And no one was upset about it.
He also reveals to Dash that he set up the whole WinterZilla thing so Fluttershy can be the hero. Dash was about to complain, but seeing Fluttershy happy made her not go on about it.
And Spike’s gift is an incomplete song. Not a fan of it, not because of Spike’s singing (I do like him singing) but because the lyrics are meh to me. Even when everyone else jumps in. But we do see a montage of other families celebrating.
So it seems Starlight and Trixie are just celebrating in her Wagon.
Daww, they’re still doing the Pie Family Traditions.
This is nice.
Our Future Fashionista got a gift that, while not fashionable, shows his parents respect his choices.
Happy Snilldar Fest!
And Flim and Flam are going home with a bunch of unsold dolls.
Carols, carols, carols, carols, carols!
Overall, a fun holiday special. Lots of fun stuff to see and each one had a story going for them. And Shining Armor shines. He actually does stuff in terms of a character and as a soldier. Even if it isn’t Christmas, check it out when you can.
