The Life And Style of Betsy Bloomingdale "Peanut butter on little toasts with crunchy bacon — you'd have a mouth full of peanut butter and you were trying to talk to Jimmy Stewart,” - Robert Bloomingdale, Producer and son of Betsy Bloomingdale. When Tom Ford bought the estate of the late Betsy Bloomingdale in December 2016, L.A. society gave a sigh of relief. The William Haines’ decorated home was the place the widow of department store heir Alfred Bloomingdale reigned as Hollywood's top hostess until her death at age 93. Mrs Bloomingdale legendary monthly dinner parties included regular guests the Reagans, the Annenbergs, Kirk and Anne Douglas, James and Gloria Stewart and Rinaldo and Carolina Herrera. These dinner parties were intimate affairs for 24 people max. In late March 2017 the totems of Mrs Bloomingdale’s gracious life went to auction at ‘Christie’s' - nearly 300 lots auction online from March 30 to April 6; 173 more in New York on April 5. On the block were Haines' furniture, fine art and the plates used to serve such memorable dishes as avocado with crème fraîche and caviar. Another signature bite? Peanut butter and bacon hors d’oeuvre. On these occasions Mrs Bloomingdale’s young son Robert would hang outside with the parking guys, directing Rosalind Russell and Michael Caine by flashlight. Mrs Bloomingdale did her own grocery shopping and recorded every detail — decor, seating, what she wore — in handwritten diaries. "People used to do that. And she had something to write about.” - Denise Hale, wife of Director Vincente Minnelli and friend of Betsy Bloomingdale. #neonurchin #neonurchinblog #dedicatedtothethingswelove #suzyurchin #ollyurchin #art #music #photography #fashion #film #words #pictures #neon #urchin #entertaining #interiordesign #williamhaines #peanutbutterandbacon #couture #hollywood #hostess #theartofdining #betsybloomingdale (at Holmby Hills, Los Angeles) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBP8_cmgRs-/?igshid=u25sr55ioydo

#Repost @thedevotedclassicist with @repostapp ・・・ The Holmby Hills home of department store heir Alfred Bloomingdale and famous hostess wife Betsy has been purchased by Tom Ford who reportedly will restore it. The 1928 house was remodeled in the Neo-Regency style, now often referred to as Hollywood Regency, by architect A. Quincy Jones in 1957 with interiors by former silent film star William Haines. Antique doors and other elements were provided by Haines along with custom made furniture which will be sold at auction in April. See previous post for Living Room. William Haines (January 2, 1900 – December 26, 1973), c. 1930. Photo c/o @gettyimages. William Haines, who was born one hundred and seventeen years ago today, was a Hollywood star whose career was cut short when he refused to deny his homosexuality. After his film career, Haines and his partner Jimmie Shields established a successful interior design company. At fourteen, Haines ran away from home, accompanied by his boyfriend; the pair ran to Hopewell, Virginia, where they worked in a Dupont factory and ran a dance hall (which likely doubled as a brothel). By 1919, Haines made his way to New York City, settling into the evolving gay community of Greenwich Village. He was discovered during a “New Faces of 1922” contest, sponsored by the Samuel Goldwyn Company, and he traveled to Hollywood in March 1922. Between 1924 and 1932, he was among Hollywood’s top-grossing stars. He is best known for roles in “The Midnight Express” (1924), “Brown of Harvard” (1926), and “Way Out West” (1930). In 1926, Haines met Jimmie Shields; the two spent the rest of their lives together. In 1933, Haines was arrested with a sailor at a Los Angeles YMCA; Louis B. Mayer, head of MGM Studios, demanded that Haines end his relationship with Shields and marry a woman or his contract would be terminated. Haines chose to stay with Shields, which effectively ended his acting career. In 1935, the couple started careers as interior designers; support from friends like Joan Crawford, Gloria Swanson, Ronald Reagan, and other Hollywood icons helped make the endeavor a success. In 1936, after a neighbor accused the men—without any basis—of propositioning his son, a group of about 100 white supremacists dragged the couple from their home and beat them; no charges were ever brought against the attackers. William Haines died of lung cancer on December 26, 1973; he was seventy-three. Haines and Shields—who Joan Crawford described as “the happiest married couple in Hollywood”—remained together for life. And, a few months after Haines’ death, Shields took his own life; his suicide note read, in part, “I now find it impossible to go it alone, I am much too lonely.” #HavePrideInHistory #WilliamHaines

Hugh Allan (born November 5, 1903; here with June Marlowe in "Wild Beauty" (1927) was probably one of the silent screen most handsome leading men; if not one of Hollywood’s. Hugh was the ‘All American Hero’; to his leading ladies (not to mention some men) he was completely irresistible. • Today he is almost completely forgotten except to the most ardent film fans. We first wrote to him in 1991. Surprised by knowledge of early cinema, considering our age (we had just turned 19), Hugh wrote back; a correspondence began, during which we would ask him about the greats of the silent screen, and he would respond. On Rudolph Valentino, he said, “He was a good guy. We first met in the showers at the Santa Monica Swimming Club”. • Hugh made his big break in 1925, after Mary Pickford took a shine to him and cast him as her leading man in "Little Annie Rooney". “That she would consider hiring an unknown like me left me aghast,” he wrote. However, his lack of experience showed, and before long he was fired off the film. Not wanting to ruin his reputation, Mary arranged to it that he was let go due to an accident on set. Hugh was photographed with his arm in plaster; the press took the bait. Hugh was replaced by William Haines. “Billy was a fun guy; but he tried his best to seduce me. I didn’t want to hurt his feelings, so let him down gently that I wasn’t gay”. • In 1926, he was signed to First National Pictures, where his films included: "Dress Parade" (1927) with Bessie Love, as Herbert in "Annapolis", "Beware of Married Men" (both 1928) and the serial "The Tiger’s Shadow" (1929). • Hugh retired in 1929. Later he became an immensely successful businessman as President and CEO of the Dover Lift Company based in Memphis. He married in 1932 and had four children. In February 1997, aged 93, and in declining health, he took himself to his study, pulled a gun from the drawer and shot himself. He died instantly. • • #iusedtobeinpictures #hughallan #leadingman #hollywood #silentscreen #handsome #1920s #heartthrob #marypickford #williamhaines #gay #gayactor #rudolphvalentino #firstnational #suicide #memphis #actor #star #littleannierooney #bessielove #santamonicaswimcenter https://www.instagram.com/p/Bq5JdKihupB/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1tzk34qt8ly3v

The Life And Style of Betsy Bloomingdale “She had this kind of joie de vivre that made her seem at times very Pollyannaish. At the same time, she was elegant, like a cross between Babe Paley and Lucille Ball.” - Bob Colacello, longtime friend of Betsy Bloomingdale and ‘Vanity Fair’ contributor. You would not have called her camera shy. In more than half-century in the public eye, Betsy Bloomingdale courted photographers, drawing them into her orbit with a come-this-way cocktail of glamour and fizzy good cheer. Mrs Bloomingdale was 93 years old when she died in July 2016. The social doyenne, philanthropist, fashion plate and widow of the department store heir and ‘Diners Club’ developer Alfred S. Bloomingdale would be remembered as the last of a tribe, adept at elevating the social civilities — entertaining, dressing and the rituals of seeing and being seen — into something of an art. The effervescence that defined her, often masking a formidable perfectionism, helped place her on intimate footing with royalty, corporate titans, show-business luminaries and politicians. Her devoutly chronicled, decades-long friendship with Nancy Reagan won her the sobriquet “First Friend”. Mrs Bloomingdale, born Betty Lee Newling in Los Angeles to Australian émigré parents, may have relished the comparison. True, she made a near fetish of documenting the manners and mores of the European elite. She meticulously jotted in her diary the menus, table settings, seating arrangements and furnishings of the Rothschilds, Princess Ghislaine de Polignac, São Schlumberger and their patrician like. Yet, as admirers point out, she rarely took herself too seriously. Her sense of fun was reflected in the most elegant little hors d’oeuvres, peanut butter and bacon, that where served at every dinner and, more visibly, in the clothes she wore. #neonurchin #neonurchinblog #dedicatedtothethingswelove #suzyurchin #ollyurchin #art #music #photography #fashion #film #words #pictures #neon #urchin #entertaining #interiordesign #williamhaines #peanutbutterandbacon #couture #hollywood #hostess #theartofdining #betsybloomingdale (at Holmby Hills, Los Angeles) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBP85AmgDks/?igshid=mvpet630badt
