The time has come– I am going to take the plunge this season and build a wildlife pond. I live on rental property, but am fortunate to have a landlord that says we can do anything that doesn’t require a permit 🙂I have compiled research and have settled on a spot in front of my (1 year old) mini-wildlife-meadow to set up the pond. It is east facing and gets around 6 hours of sun from early morning- mid afternoon during the warmer months.
I understand if you are scratching your head at my investment in the gardens on this property because it is not mine per-say, but the benefits are for the natural world and in turn, myself. Seeing the growing strength of an ecosystem is pure return on my investments, imo. And honestly, how long should gardening-enthusiast-millennials wait to enhance the shrinking natural world while looking at the housing market in discouragement. It all depends on one’s values I suppose!
There are a few families with young children in my neighborhood too, and if I can cultivate a little curiosity and interest in their growing minds about our local ecosystem, the act of building a wildlife pond is invaluable.

Spring is in the air. My local Peregrines look like they are soon to nest. The Grey Herons are also nesting. Marsh Marigolds are flowering in my pond, a real sign of spring. I came home this evening to find a little hedgehog drinking out of the pond. By the time I got my camera he'd moved, but then I spotted another one! They are about the size of my hand so they might be adolescent. I love the little snuffling piggy sounds they make.
