Witset, BC (No. 1)

Witset (formerly Moricetown) is a Wet'suwet'en village in Central British Columbia, Canada on the west side of the Bulkley River on Coryatsaqua (Moricetown) Indian Reserve No. 2, and on Moricetown Indian Reserve No.1. The current village was built during the early 1900s. Evidence of inhabitants date back to around 5,500 years ago.

The original name of the village was Witset. It was abandoned after a rockslide that prevented salmon from reaching the canyon. Witsuwit'en people then settled in Tsë Cakh (Hagwilget) and referred to the old village as Këyikh Wigit (often spelled Kyah Wiget).

It was renamed after the pioneer missionary Father Adrien-Gabriel Morice, who named the village after himself, and was admonished by the church for doing so.

On May 5, 2018, the community officially reverted to its original name, Witset. The community’s name now means something akin to “first” or “the people of the first village.” The name change came about in part through the work of Wanda Nikal, a Wet'suwet'en woman who organized a petition over the issue. In September 2017, the Band Council voted in favour of the name change.

She is very much a fan of ocean life and wants to be a marine biologist when she's older!

She can rant for hours about sharks! her favourites are great whites!

There is a choice to make whether I pursue a web based approach or create an app interface. There is advantage and disadvantage to both, considering Pantones existing eco-system, the target audience, accessibility and usability

Web

Pros

No onboarding required

Less hurdles a user has to go through to engage in the experience

May be used in a more creative and productive mindset? On your laptop, with the mindset of creating a project or piece of work, rather than on your phone amidst scrolling and messaging.

Cons

No relationship, easy to close the tab and forget it ever existed

No commitment, may mean fewer repeat users

No reminder its there, e.g widgits & notifications

Would it be it's own website? Part of Pantones? If its own website, may get low traffic. If part of Pantone's, potentially less area to play with brand identity and creating its own visual style.

App

Pros

Commitment, streak, personalisation, wigits, notifications. Options that make the user more likely to keep returning to the concept.

App powered by Pantone, could have a very individual identity

I want to expand my abilities in mobile/tablet UX design, more so than Web, although I enjoy both.

Could create an opportunity for more positive screen time, for Gen Z who may use it to procrastinate and scroll on their phones

Cons

Would it interfere with existing app, Adobe Studio? If another app, needs a very individual identity, similar to how Pinterest have the original app, and 'Shuffles' by Pinterest:

Outcome

I think I am going to create an app interface. The key reasons are to hopefully create better customer retention. I also think I can make an additional app in the same space as Pantone Studio, because they will offer such vastly different services. This is also a niche solution for a small target market, which could have an entirely unique visual identity, while still keeping colour at the forefront.
