12 - 24/52 “Gundam: The Origin” Volumes 1-12 By Yoshikazu Yasuhiko

Gundam, come for the big robot fights, stay for the geopolitics and morality studies. Gundam: The Origin is a retelling of the original anime run of the show written and drawn by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko- who was an original character designer of the show. It follows the original plot fairly closely with the same big beats occurring sometimes in different places and some parts that were skipped over in the original being looked at more in depth. Collected in 12 hardback volumes the series looks stunning in beautiful art with color pages at the start of every chapter and even a few at the end of some key chapters. The story itself might take a while to get going for you if this is your introduction to the series. Amuro can start off as very hard to like as he slowly matures throughout the series, how much of that change is growth and how much is trauma can be debated. 

The members of WhiteBase vary from lovable and easy to root for to distant or annoying. It feels genuine in the way that there are so many people lumped together, many just civilians doing their best with little to no training. The antagonists get a lot of focus and development which adds weight to the battle scenes. Which range from cinematic showdowns to messy, hectic and chaotic. This is certainly not a series for everyone, the technical, mecha, and battle aspect of it tends to draw one crowd. While the politics, character studies, and otherwise heavy moments tend to draw another. But if you find yourself somewhere in the middle- man it can be a good time. 

If you’re curious about Gundam, this may be a good jumping in point if you’re interested in something a little (but not excessively so) more in depth than a typical shounen series. But if you’re mostly just in it for the Mechs and fights (no shame!) this might drag a bit much for your taste.  I wasn't positive how to count this for my goal, but ultimately I decided to count each of the 12 volumes as one book. As each edition comprises of two of the original tankobon books put together occasionally with extras like interviews or bonus chapters. Each took about the time it would take to read a graphic novel in the same vein as "The Magic Fish" which I read earlier this year so this felt right to me.
