Ashoka's Lion Capital at Sarnath 250 B.C.E. Carved out of a single block of Chunar sandstone and measuring 2.3m in height, this magnificent highly polished sculpture of Mauryan art is the best known piece of ancient sculpture in the country, and simply has to be seen to be believed. It was mounted on top of a tall pillar at the site where Buddha gave his first teaching, just outside Varanasi. In modern India these four lions are an iconic image, found on all government documents, coins, banknotes and passports. It was adopted as the official emblem of India after independence in 1950. How beautiful is this set of 8 amulets depicting the Ashtamangala, or Auspicious Symbols found in Buddhism (most prominently Tibetan). The symbols are: The Conch, symbolizing the call to Dharma, awakening devotees from the slumber of ignorance. The Endless Knot, symbolizing the unity of all things. The Fish, symbolizing the freedom and fearlessness of sentient beings, similar to fish in the water. The Lotus, symbolizing the manifold facets of enlightenment in its many petals, as well as detachment from the world of illusion, as the lotus rises above the mud. The Parasol, representing the protection of all under the Dharma. The Vase, or Pot, symbolizing the health and wealth that follows from the teachings, as well as the limitlessness of the Dharma, as a Pot that never empties. The Dharmachakra, or Wheel of the Dharma, the 8 spoked wheel representing the Eightfold Path of Buddhist practice. Lastly, the Victory Banner, representing the triumph of the Buddha over the hindrances to enlightenment. #tibetansacred #sacredsymbols #ashtamangala #auspicioussymbols #buddhism #tibetanbuddhism #tibetan #theconch #theendlessknot #thefish #thelotus #theparasol #thevase #thedharmachakra #wheelofdharma #victorybanner #buddhistjewelry #amulets #buddhistamulets #shop #shopsmall #nyc #unionsquare #jewelry #gift #beadsofparadisenyc (at Beads of Paradise NYC) https://www.instagram.com/p/CJJ0MleBNRJ/?igshid=9mg6uyo3v8b9

#Repost @khyentsefoundation ・・・ Happy #Chokhor #Duchen! 🎉 . Today is one of the four major #Tibetan #Buddhist holidays that commemorates the day #Buddha #Shakyamuni first turned the Wheel of #Dharma at #Sarnath by teaching the Four Noble Truths. Many #Buddhists celebrate today by visiting holy places, performing life releases, and focusing on virtuous practices, as it is said that the #karmic results of positive activities on Chokhor Duchen are multiplied ten million times. 💫 . On this #auspicious day, we would like to invite you to join the meritorious effort by supporting Lighting the Mahabodhi (@lightingthemahabodhi) and the Kumarajiva Project (link in bio), two KF initiatives to uphold the dharma for generations to come. May all beings benefit! 🙏 . . . . #dzongsarkhyentserinpoche #djkr #chokhorduchen #wheelofdharma #buddhistteachings #buddhistholyday #buddhistholiday #kumarajivaproject https://www.instagram.com/p/B0uWB_uA8EpKWK_HEpQgQYNb2Awxss7YHmUJE80/?igshid=y74ffvik7fka

After he had attained enlightenment, as a result of requests Buddha rose from meditation and taught the so-called first “Wheel of Dharma.” These teachings, which include the Sutra of the Four Noble Truths and other discourses, are the principal source of the Hinayana, or Lesser Vehicle, of Buddhism. Later, Buddha taught the second and third Wheels of Dharma, which include the Perfection of Wisdom Sutras and the Sutra Discriminating the Intention, respectively. These teachings are the source of the Mahayana, or Great Vehicle, of Buddhism. In the Hinayana teachings, Buddha explains how to attain liberation from suffering for oneself alone. In the Mahayana teachings he explains how to attain full enlightenment, or Buddhahood, for the sake of others. Both traditions flourished in Asia, at first in India and then gradually in other surrounding countries, including Tibet. Now they are also beginning to flourish in the West. Buddha’s teachings, which are known as “Dharma”, are likened to a wheel that moves from country to country in accordance with changing conditions and people’s karmic inclinations. The external forms of presenting Buddhism may change as it meets with different cultures and societies, but its essential authenticity is ensured through the continuation of an unbroken lineage of realized practitioners. Buddha’s teachings are said to be like a precious wheel because, wherever they spread, the people in that area have the opportunity to control their minds by putting them into practice. #Buddha #buddhism #buddhist #TheWanderingBuddha #Oneness #awake #enlightenment #awaken #wheelofdharma #dharma #life #mind #karma #FourNobleTruths
