Turning negative space into positive thinking

Taking inspiration from culture, We Launch brand consultant Rachel Dean paid a visit to the Chelsea Arts Club in London to look at the work of Donald Smith.

They say ‘the devil is in the detail’ and that is certainly true of Donald Smith’s latest exhibition at Chelsea Arts Club. As a former Chairman of the club and now a Trustee of the private members club, it was fitting for the exhibition to take place in a setting that is so special to the artist, a home from home.

The club’s billiard room was adorned with the artists mesmerizing collection entitled Colour Space. The abstract paintings feature bold lines of vibrant colours meticulously applied using oil paints across a stretched linen canvas. Whilst hung together as a collection, the colour palette of each painting was distinctly different, taking inspiration from the artists’ observations – whether the serene colours of Kerala through to the vibrancy of Delhi.

The dynamic lines zig and zag across the canvas both creating and revealing new shapes and spaces. However, it’s the use of the negative space which plays as much of an intrinsic part in Donald’s work, with the base colour of the canvas forming a crucial part of the overall colour palette. It’s this use of negative space which is also skilfully applied in the creation of brand marks such as FedEx and WWF.

If the word abstract mean to withdraw something from something else, then I think the lesson here is to shift our focus from the positive to the negative. Looking into the void of art and design to discover new shape and forms to depict a new reality. This was a fantastic exhibition that inspired me to look further at how negative space flows through all aspects of branding (such as in the iconic FedEx / WWF and NBC brand identities).
