It’s kind of crazy to me the cheating storyline is so debated because at the end of the day it’s not even why belly and Jere broke up? Like she said yes to his proposal and even if she was 129388274 feet in denial up until the wedding day like the cheating was never the cause of her denial. To me, the cheating’s biggest purpose is actually for Conrad. Without it he would have never confessed. And like even if it can be debated since belly and Jere were in a fight/broken up blah blah like it resonates with Conrad because it’s a direct parallel of their dad’s actions and how their dad treated Susannah. And I think this is reason why it’s so important to the 3rd book because in the past two books Conrad is grieving yes but he’s also very mad at his dad for cheating on his sick mom. His actions are a reaction to BOTH their parents. Like this is a boy who quit everything he liked because he was so scared of being like his shitty dad and he based his decisions on not being like his dad. And then he goes and discovers that his own brother did what their dad did to their mom to the girl they both loved!!!
Like it’s not “JH made jeremiah cheat to make him look bad against Conrad for the audience” its really “she made Jeremiah cheat because it’s quite literally the ONLY ill act that will make him look bad TO Conrad.”Because Conrad would’ve kept the belief that he was undeserving of belly for the rest of his life and kept sacrificing b/j happiness for his own if Jeremiah didn’t cheat.
For this reason alone I feel like it would be in the show. However they didn’t make it clear Conrad knew about his dad cheating, so it could go either way. But yeah these are just my thoughts :)
YES. this is exactly everything I've been trying to say. Thank you for articulating this point so well. SAY IT LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK.
I could never really understand why Belly accepted the proposal, but she was really desperate to prove that she didn't still love Conrad because of how everyone else made her feel about being with Conrad. I don't understand why people have such a hard time understanding this and why so much of this fandom has such a hatred for the third book and Jeremiah cheating specifically. I have never seen so many people mad about one little plot before. I can only assume that people didn't actually read the book even though they act like they have. Honestly, for me the cheating thing wasn't the worst thing Jeremiah did in the 3rd book. He was a total and complete ass the entire book, and he had such hatred for Conrad it was actually so sad. Yeah, I just don't understand why everyone is so stuck on the cheating. for me that wasn't the worst thing he did or the deal breaker.
I 10000% agree with you. Conrad couldn't let Belly be with a man who would treat her the way Adam treated Susannah and especially not his own brother who should know how awful it is and how deeply it can hurt (and he obviously did know and recognize this bc he felt super guilty, bought her the cheap bracelet and then proposed after she found out). I also think Conrad saw himself as not good enough for Belly and when he found out Jere had done that, he finally realized that he wasn't as bad as he thought, it made him realize that Belly should be with someone who truly loves her and would never do that to her. Because his immediate response is "I would never do that". he literally tells Belly "I never even looked at another girl when we were together" and you know she also understands this and knows how bad it is, but she doesn't want to admit it or admit that she still loves Conrad and would rather be with him. Up until that point, Conrad was going to be the best man and watch them vow to love each other forever from his brother's side. He was opposed to the engagement from the start and thought it was a mistake but he was the only one who didn't say a word to Belly about that. He just helped her plan the wedding AND he went out of his way to convince Laurel to go to the wedding and be there for Belly. He was trying so hard to be okay with it. But like you said, as soon as he hears Jere and his friends talking about having sex with Belly and Jere cheating, he runs out of the bar and immediately finds Belly to tell her, and he goes from "I hate this wedding but I'm gonna help and not influence Belly's decision in any way" to "we could run away right now and be together" and finally confesses his feelings. I think everyone is completely missing this point when it comes to the cheating storyline. I just don't get how you could read the book and then say "oh the story would be fine without it". But nothing else they could come up with for Jere to do would be the same, it wouldn't be enough to get to Conrad. I've thought about everything you said here before and it really is such an exact parallel of Susannah and Adam and idk how people haven't figured that out/seen that yet.
I feel like it's kind of implied in the show that Conrad does know about his dad cheating (which is why he can't stand to be around him in the show). Everyone can believe what they want, but I choose to believe they are following the third book and we will see Jeremiah cheat and then eventually get to see the whole scene on the beach of Conrad telling Belly how he feels about her and them arguing about Jeremiah cheating.

I feel like if they really wanted to the people who control the tsitp tv show could stretch it into like 5 seasons.
Spoilers for book 3
Season 3, We obviously have the belly × Jeremiah wedding fail. It ends with belly signing up to study abroad.
Season 4, belly is in Spain and having a long distance love triangle with conrad in the states and a new Spanish guy, who is obviously in Spain. Every episode or every other episode belly gets a letter or package from conrad. It ends with her finally writing conrad back.
Season 5, no love triangle just belly and conrad reconnecting and then dating again. It would be cool if belly came back to the US for Steven and Taylor's wedding or something. But season 5 ends with belly and conrad getting married and a little epilogue. Also the last song of the series would be Lover by Taylor Swift

What I really want to see of Conrad in TSITP S3
His conversation with Laurel- I felt he would show this incredible vulnerability when he says "I just want her (Belly) to be happy."
When he confesses, he doesn't ask her to "run away" or "be with him", he tells her that he never stopped loving her, but if she still wants to be with Jere, he won't stop her.
I feel the reason why he would hold back is because he knows he's not ready or worthy of her and he's under the idea that Jere is ready and worthy that is until he hears about the Cabo incident or anything that is proof that Jere and Belly are attempting to salvage their crumbling relationship (I don't know if they're going to use the "break(up) double paradox" ("we were on a break") storyline- I honestly feel they could make a plotline where Belly gets an opportunity to play pro volleyball and Jere in an attempt to do long distance, proposes? Or Jere, simmering with the fact of Conrad and Belly's Christmas at Cousins, says some next level shit that really hurts Belly and in an attempt to apologize, he proposes? IDK I guess I'm okay if they do adapt the storyline, but I feel at this point, it's a rather cliched plot device)
I would hate if he would put a "drunk" excuse- maybe if he takes back his feelings like when they said goodbye in the motel in the s2 finale, that would be interesting.
Taylor and Conrad's convo- I feel Conrad should stand up for himself because I hated the way Taylor thought that he was purposely playing around with Belly's feelings (maybe it was true in the book, but I hope it's not the same thing in the show)
His goodbye scene- I really hope they have this Pacey "you're off the hook" monologue inspired declaration or Fleabag's "it'll pass"
They show him having friendships with other women- platonic relationships which really makes Belly jealous (it's just me, it's not necessary)
Conrad fans, what are your fan requests for S3?

I realllllyyyy hope the show doesn't go the same route with belly and jere's relationship as the book does especially because they made Jere bisexual and the "bisexual people are cheaters" trope is so harmful. Plus I feel like the Jere in the show would never hurt belly like that. Communication king!

Disclaimer: I love Jeremiah so pls don't hate on me for this post I just think that if Jelly stans can claim Conrad is so toxic ( and more toxic than Jeremiah) and the better choice they should be able to handle the truth about just how Jere is, was, and can continue to be.
You know it's so crazy to me that no one talks about how canonically Jeremiah stole Belly’s first kiss even though she literally told everyone just seconds prior not to kiss her because she didn’t give them permission. (“Hey, I’m a person you can’t just kiss me without my permission” and “Permission not granted to either of you”) in Book one (Chapter 28-pages 175-179) when Belly was 14 (which means Jeremiah being 14-15ish knew what he was doing, i don’t want to hear any excuses for him). Taylor was visiting and everyone was playing truth or dare and she dared Jeremiah to “Kiss somebody in this room right now” thinking he’d kiss her (her being Taylor). He responded “Easy” leaning towards Belly and kissed her. This here is Belly’s exact inner dialogue; “Before I could answer he kissed me right on the lips…I tried to push him off ,but he kept on kissing me, for a few more seconds. I pushed him off again, and he leaned back into the couch, as casual as can be…I couldn’t believe Jeremiah had stolen my first kiss like that. I had been waiting, wanting it to be special……….He had only done it to make Taylor jealous not because he liked me……My lips were no longer my own. They had been touched.”  Do with this information what you will but it's 100% cannon that Jeremiah is a douchebag and basically doesn't care about consent. There were two other people in that room he could've kissed just to get his dare over with(Taylor and Steven) but instead he kissed Belly without her consent and proceeded to kiss her while she pushed him away.

TSITP Season 3 prediction 🥁🥁🥁
I think they do the classic book-to-movie move and stretch the third book into two seasons OR to completely off script or something. Because the pacing of the plot that we have right now just does not lend itself to the book 3 timeline. Can you really see Belly and Jeremiah as they are right now planning a wedding? (I know the point in the books was that it moved fast/they were too young, but come on!)
Otherwise, I think we'll get one season of Belly x Jeremiah (remember, now we have details during the school year and not just summer- this entire season took place over the course of a few days) and then a fourth season of Belly and Conrad finding their way back to each other. I think THATS the big "things could change" vibe that Jenny is alluding to.
More importantly, I need Taylor x Steven to stay a thing and I'd like another appearance by my main man Cam Cameron, please and thank you.

Girl, no you did not. This part made me soooo angry bc miss girl how do you say that being distraught and emotionally distant (and not just without reason, but bc his mother was dying/dead) is anywhere near comparable to getting cheated on. Like maybe it’s just me being compassionate with a fellow “I would rather die than let others know my feelings” person, but I don’t see Conrad’s behaviour as such a terrible thing. Like yes, she deserved better but he’s done most of the things that he did bc he wanted better for her and didn’t want to hurt her further. And she is literally willing to forgive cheating but draws the line at being emotionally distant while going through the death of a parent?

the ending (part 1)
Tumblr media
Summary: This is how I imagine the story should end if there was a season 4 and/or book 4 or expanded epilogue to the books. This is taking place a couple years after Belly and Conrad's wedding and it is kind of a mix of the show and the books with some extra added things. It's based on this.
Warnings: none that I can think of, except this is basically one giant spoiler, if you have not read the books, I would recommend proceeding with caution because there are SPOILERS AHEAD. otherwise this is just overloaded with cuteness and all the Belly and Conrad married couple content the books didn't give us.
Word Count: 1783
Sunlight streams through the windows, illuminating the whole house in a way the sun only does in the summer. Everything is ready, and everyone will be here soon. I take one last walk around the house, making sure everything is in its place, that everything is perfect. It has to be perfect, just like Susannah would have done it. There's vases of blue hydrangeas that Conrad helped me cut from the bushes outside scattered throughout the house, and the kitchen is stocked with cereal.
I look up at the pictures on the mantle, Conrad and I on our wedding day; Conrad with Jere and Steven; Taylor and I; a group photo of all of us and Laurel; one of Con, Susie and I on the day Susie was born; and a Fisher family Christmas portrait that Conrad absolutely hates; and in the center, a shot of Susannah and all of us kids from the last summer we spent with her here. I smile, reaching up to gently touch the frame with my fingertips. Susannah would be so happy we're having a big Fisher-Conklin family summer at the summer house again.
I open the sliding door and step out onto the back deck, looking out at the ocean and feeling the sun warm on my face. It's warm but not too warm out, and the sky is clear and blue. A perfect Cousins beach day.
"It's a perfect Cousins beach day," Conrad says as he comes outside behind me, shutting the door very carefully and quietly.
"Yeah," I laugh, looking over at him fondly. "It's like you just read my mind."
He chuckles and then he's silent for a long moment as he takes in the view in front of us and the sunshine. "It feels like my Mom is here," He says softly, and I can see the sadness momentarily flicker in his eyes.
I lean towards him, putting my arms around him gently. "Susannah would never miss a summer in Cousins."
"No," He smiles, burying his head in the space between my shoulder and neck, "she wouldn't."
I'm suddenly aware of another person who is also, at this moment, missing. "Con, where's Susie? Did you check on her?"
"She's sleepin' like a baby, Belly," Conrad replies, with that smirk on his face that has always driven me crazy. "She timed her nap perfectly, she should be wide awake and well rested by the time everyone gets here."
"I should go get her ready. Knowing my mother, she will be here exactly on time," I tell him, starting to untangle myself from his embrace. I would stay in his arms forever if it was up to me.
He laughs, thinking this over. "Oh yeah, Laur will definitely be on time. Jere on the other hand, will absolutely be late. Him and Steven both." He turns to watch me open the door and head back inside. "Do you need help with Suz?"
"No, I've got it under control Con. Can you just do one last check and make sure we didn't forget anything?" I ask him.
"We already checked, like, four times, Bel, but you know I'll do anything for you," He can't keep the smile off his face as he follows me inside, stopping to kiss me for a moment, soft and slow. He smiles against my lips before he pulls away slowly and reaches out to push my hair out of my face and tuck it behind my ear, letting his thumb brush against my cheek gently. "I love you."
Hearing Conrad Fisher say those words to me will never get old. Even after all these years, I still get butterflies and blush like a little girl every time he says it.
"I love you too," I smile at him, stealing one last kiss. It feels like getting the last word, getting the last kiss before I go upstairs. I have to kiss the smirk off his face, smooth out his lips, remind him that he's mine. Even though I know no matter how many times I kiss that smirk away it always comes back.
Upstairs, Susie is laying in her crib, just waking up. When she sees me she sits up, reaching out towards the bars on the side of the crib. Her blue eyes open wide, looking up at me and daring me to take longer than five seconds to pick her up. She has her father's eyes and his attitude. It takes me longer than five seconds to cross the nursery, so she pulls herself up, shaking the bars and making fussy, grumpy baby noises, devolving into crying. "Ma-ma!"
"Mama's got you, Susie," I say, lifting her out of the crib and holding her close to me, her little head resting on my shoulder. I rock her gently to soothe her, and her fussing slowly calms down. "I know, I know, it's hard to be a baby."
I lay her down on the changing table and play peekaboo with my hands, earning a smile and the sweetest little laughter from her. As I change her diaper and get her dressed in the pretty little baby sundress I picked out for her to wear today, I can hear quiet thumps and thuds from Conrad downstairs. He's opening and closing cabinets and doors, and moving things around. I smile to myself, knowing that despite him teasing me, he really is doing a final check. I know he wants this summer to be just as perfect as I do. Susie was born at the very end of last summer, so this is the first summer of her life, her first summer in Cousins. I know she won't remember it, but I want it to be special for her anyway, just like Susannah would have.
Susannah would be so happy that there's another little girl in the family, a Fisher girl. She'd be even happier to know that the nursery is in my old room, the one that was once Susannah's childhood bedroom. And she'd be absolutely thrilled that Conrad and I have made the summer house our home. It's my childhood dream come true. For me, this house has always been my home. Living here is like an endless summer in some ways, although every season in Cousins has its charm, especially winter. Waking up every day in this house with Conrad Fisher, I've never felt more at home.
I carry Susie downstairs, now that she's dressed and freshened up. Conrad is in the living room, refolding a blanket and fluffing up pillows on the couch, and his face lights up and breaks into a smile the second I walk in. "There's my girls," He smiles, giving me a quick peck on the lips and taking Susie into his arms. "Look at my pretty baby, all dressed up," He coos to her.
"She's all ready for her first summer," I say, smiling at the baby, "aren't you, pretty girl? All your favorite people are going to be here any minute."
"Yeah, you're so excited to see Uncle Stevie and Uncle Jere, aren't you?" Conrad says, still cooing in his baby-talking voice. "And Grandma Laur-" He's cut off by the sound of a car door shutting outside, and we hurry over to the door together to peek out the window, and speak of the devil, my mother is smiling and carrying some of her bags to the porch. When we open the door, my mother is standing there beaming at us. I don't think I've seen her this happy in a long time.
"Hi Laur! We're so happy you're here," Conrad smiles sincerely at her, moving in for a somewhat awkward hug since the baby is still in his arms. Susie is smiling wide at her, showing off her four little teeth.
I hug her next, and she squeezes me tight. "Belly, it's so good to see you. You're glowing, bean."
"Thanks Mom," I smile at her. "Now put your bags down and make yourself at home. Conrad will help you carry your things in."
"I'm holding the baby though, so I don't know if I can," He says teasingly, smirking. I know he was going to do it anyway, without anyone ever having to ask; he's still the same old Conrad who is all about duty and doing the right thing. But he likes to joke and tease, even when he's fooling no one. Or at least not fooling me.
"Don't worry, I'll take her off your hands, Connie," my mother smirks right back at him, reaching out and taking the baby into her arms.
Conrad chuckles and calls out, "Thank you, Laur!" as he walks toward the door to carry her bags in just like I knew he would from the beginning.
I look back over at my mom and smile. She's smiling at Susie and Susie is smiling right back at her, listening wide-eyed to everything my mother is saying to her. "I'm so glad you're here, Mom," I say to her.
"Me too," She smiles, "I wouldn't miss Susie's first summer in Cousins for the world. Susannah would never let that happen." She looks at Susie, who lets out a little laugh. "She would have loved you, Susannah Laurel Fisher."
Conrad comes back in then, arms full of my mothers bags and sets them down with a thump. "Geez Laurel, did you pack your entire house?" He jokes.
"No, I just packed the essentials, plus I stocked up on all the good bulk stuff at Costco. We should have everything-" My mom looks at all her bags as if she's remembering something. "Oh shoot, I completely forgot my diet Coke."
"Don't worry Laur, we've got you covered. We made sure to get some for you," Conrad grins at her.
"You must have had to drive so far to find it. I used to always complain to Susannah about how they don't sell it here," My mom says.
"Oh it was no problem. We wanted to make sure we had everything for everyone," Conrad assures her. "Speaking of everyone, the others should be here any minute now."
As if on cue, we hear a car pulling up outside. When we all move towards the door to peek out, we see Steven emerging from his car with a big grin on his face.
I guess now I know how the boys felt at the start of every summer, waiting for us to arrive. This is the hardest part, all the nerves and anticipation and waiting. Thank goodness the waiting will be over soon. Jeremiah and Taylor shouldn't be far behind Steven, and once they get here the summer can officially begin.

I had originally planned on writing the whole thing as one long one shot, but I decided to just do it in parts so you can get a glimpse at what I've been working on. I hope you liked part 1. stay tuned and please let me know what you thought of this and if you want to read more!
