#we have freedom of religion

is it just me or is "the bible says it's wrong" like the stupidest political argument ever? like literally the first amendment exists?? we have freedom of religion?? the government isn't supposed to be making choices in accordance with any particular religion.
I always see people respond to this dumb argument with "actually the bible doesn't say that just you" and that's cool too but why do I never see "even if the bible did say that queer people sucked or any number of other awful things that shouldn't matter because our government should not be making rules for people based on the bible"

Ok so, this might be on the nose BUT, Lucy (the demon looking girl) i have as my PFP and draw all the time she dates an actual angel right (wiki, the orange haired girl), not a human looking like an angel but an actual angel, who shows herself to Lucy in a form she can comprehend (but i digress) so the meaning behind that is mostly based on my experience living as a transgender in Poland (let me explain)
Tumblr media
(pic for context)
Lucy is a demon and i treat it as a standin for the way the church and polish media portrays the gays (as everything wrong with the world and something that corrupts the youth, in other words a devil), so instead of being so sad about it i chose to make her a bisexual demon.
Wiki at first really wants to kill Lucy and get rid of the demons that rid this earth, but she can't do it, and they begin to talk, and talk, and talk and eventually wiki starts understanding, that Lucy is not much different from other humans, and that she's actually a deeply caring although strange person, which changes her outlook on demons in general, and herself to the point she's not only able to accept that Lucy is a demon, but also fall in love with her right.
So thats my lore for them, but it all is an allegory to the fact the LGBT folks and the Catholics (and other religions in general) have a lot more in common with each other and that it is not only possible to accept each other but love each other and be happy together, and through my art i draw of them, i am able to say this out loud without saying much, and it's also me finding peace as both LGBT and somewhat Catholic, these girls are a representation of that.

I will always be somewhat angry that the US gay marriage debate overwhelmingly focused on "well actually the Bible DOES support homosexuality!" instead of "your religion should not dictate whether I have the legal rights granted by marriage"

I feel like I'm losing my fucking mind.
while the absolute horror continues to bombard palestine - the nonstop bombings, the dead bodies in the street and trapped under rubble those living can no longer get to, the restriction of health care, newborn babies left to die, starvation and thirst, literal sewage in the streets spreading disease, all of this in gaza and even in the west bank, the increased bombings there and raids - daily, meanwhile, here in canada, we apparently have nothing fucking better to do then arrest people for using pro-palestine chants under the guise of it being hate motivated.
WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK
I wish this was a fucking joke, but no. a protestor in calgary was arrested for using 'from the river to the sea, palestine will be free.' apparently the cops stopped by to 'inform' the protestors what chants were allowed and what were ~no no's~ which included 'from the river to the sea', and when a protestor used it anyway (because it's NOT FUCKING HATE SPEECH) they arrested him. for calling for the freedom of people under an occupation.
this is canada, supposedly one of the most free places to be (built atop the blood of indigenous people but anyways). but with pro-israel propaganda and the weaponizing of anti-semitism being repeated by our media and leaders, shit like this happens.
someone tell me right now where in the phrase 'from the river to the sea, palestine will be free' there is a call for an extermination of jewish people. look me in the fucking eyes and try to find where in that call for freedom it shows hatred for jews. this is fucking pathetic. this is a call for freedom. this is a call for liberation of a people who've been oppressed and assaulted for years, since before both my 60+ parents were born. this is a call for them to be able to walk freely within their own homes, within their own land, to be able to control their own lives. liberation for their safety and for their children, from the constant risk of arrest, assault and raids by the israeli army.
this is about ending an occupation, not the jewish people & their way of life.
many new sites like cbc and global reported on this as well as others; the global article also interviewed a jewish man, who claimed the chant was anti-semitic. it mentioned that he was the president of an organization called 'Federation CJA' - one google search of their website, and wouldn't you fucking know it, they're in partnership with israel, from 'birthright' trips to allowing you to send goddamn postcards to their poor, sad soldiers who're exhausted from bombing innocent civilians all day.
so while we sit here in safety, humming over think-pieces about whether a demand from an exhausted people to finally let them be free secretly means slaughtering every person of another marginalized group in site, the death toll in gaza has gone above 11,000.
of all the fucking absurd things canadians could be talking about right now, this has to take the first-place blue ribbon.
frankly, what this does mean at least, is one thing - when the occupier starts crying because the people they've trampled on for years demanded they stop & it hurt their feelings, it means they're scared. it means that the marches and support are working. when the oppressors start weaponizing language used for liberation and claim it's a cry to hang them from the gallows, then they're getting desperate. it's a reminder to us all to keep pushing and fight for a liberated palestine.
from the river to the sea, palestine will be free
(I s2g if any zionists come in my notes trying to claim some bs that is just the regurgitated rhetoric of the propaganda you've swallowed it's on fucking site I will block you).

Okay you know what? No.
Y’all who are out here wailing about how the overturning of Roe V. Wade is “violating the religious freedom of Jews”, specifically y’all goys on the left?
Fuck off.
You don’t CARE about Jews. You do not care about our religion, our culture, our faith, our struggles, our identity. You do not care. You only care about using us an argument for your own rights. You only care about bringing us up when we serve you- but when it comes to supporting US, you fall flat. Every. Single. Time.
Supporting Jewish rights to kosher food and slaughter? Yeah, I remember the “outcry” against kosher slaughter from a bunch of you “progressive” fucks who clearly knew nothing about how kosher slaughter works outside of “it’s a barbaric religious practice!”
Supporting the right of Jews to self determination? You can’t even HEAR the word “Israel” without turning to blood libel, accusations of dual loyalty, and Holocaust denial.
Supporting Jewish cultural and faith-based obligations? You consistently schedule marches and events on days when many Jews cannot attend, and when called on it, you do NOTHING.
Supporting queer Jews? You kick us out of your marches for having the audacity to wave flags with the symbols of our people on them because you get off on being “anti-Zionist” for some reason.
Supporting the literal history of racial oppression faced by Jews? You call us all “white Europeans” and refuse to recognize antisemitism as a form of racism (probably because you can continue to do it and feel good about yourselves if you claim it’s a religious hatred).
Consistently, without fail, you have not only left Jews out of your activism, you have fucking rallied up antisemitic hate against us. You have told us all, time and time again, that we do not matter, that the only Jews you want to support are the dead ones you can use to bludgeon fascists with, while ignoring everything that led up to those Jews being dead and everything that followed.
You DO NOT get to invoke us in the name of your fight for abortion rights. You DO NOT get to use us as some tool in an argument when you have proven, time and time again, that not only do you not care about us, you would be just as happy to oppress us and see us dead as the fucking fascists and white supremacists would, albeit for different (but equally bullshit) reasons.
At least the Nazis I’ve encountered straight up tell me they want me dead because they hate Jews. You fuckers have to hide it behind twisted “woke” language so you can be antisemites with justice boners.

Tfw you get recommended a particular pastor-teacher by a peer and you have gotten just wise enough at this point to go look the person up before just ingesting their teaching, and the top two things they have recently said are "Christian Nationalism is a good thing and a God-ordained pursuit" and "Israel should by no means pause or cease fire" and you're just like. Aha. Ok then. Glad I checked first. 😅

today the swedish security service announced that the terrorism threat level has been raised to a 4 (on a scale 1-5). many extremist organisations (including the likes of al-qaida) have encouraged their followers to “strike back” against sweden. because of this many countries have updated their travel advice regarding sweden, for example the uk goverment’s website reads “Terrorists are very likely to try and carry out attacks in Sweden”. it’s fucking terrifying rn and it’s all because of this one madman coming here and organising public burnings of copies of the quran which happened over a year ago but we’re suffering the effects of now. never mind that the guy was danish and that the counter demonstrations were much larger than the small number of right-wing extremists attending the burnings, terrorist organisations have now painted sweden as their number one target and our useless fucking government can’t do shit (and lots of us are saying that this is what happens when you decide to cooperate with right-wing xenophobic parties and legitimising their views but whatever). as always there’s still idiots out there who want to literally add fuel to the fire and carry out more burnings and being allowed to do so because of freedom of speech or whatever (i mean, it’s an important thing but if your actions jeopardise the safety of the entire country and its citizens…) and i’m so fucking tired of a small number of idiots making all the rest of us suffer. this situation is unlike any i’ve experienced in my life and it’s making me scared to go to public places or attend events (i mean our football team just cancelled their plans to hold a celebratory public event should they win the bronze because of the risk of terrorism… that means it’s serious)

@sys-garden 99% sure this was directed at me soooooo
Tumblr media
Nope. I'm Christian, and a super pious one at that. My irl life is practically consumed by it (in a good way/way I like). We get tons of hate on the internet though, as you've probably seen, so I never really talk about it out of fear of getting attacked/losing friends.
Welp, now you know one more thing about me lol

Post 9/11 Trivia
Most folks on this site were either children on September 11, 2001, or weren’t even born yet.  But America went crazy for about a year afterwards.  Here’s some highlights that I remember that might not be in your history books:
There was national discussion on whether or not Halloween should be canceled because…fuck if I know why.  After planes crashed into buildings in NYC it follows that 6-year-olds in Iowa shouldn’t be allowed to dress up like Batman and ask their neighbors for candy, I guess.  (Halloween wasn’t canceled, by the way.)
On a similar note, people asked if comedy - any sort of comedy - was appropriate anymore, ever.
People sold shitty parachutes to suckers “in case your building gets attacked and you have to jump out the window.” There were honest-to-God news reports warning people not to jump out of the window with shitty mail-order parachutes because they wouldn't work.
As a follow-up to the attacks, someone mailed anthrax to some prominent politicians and news anchors - you know, famous people - along with some badly-written notes about “you cannot stop us, death to America, Allah is good” and after that every time some random dumbass found a package in the mail they didn’t recognize they thought that the terrorists were targeting them, too.
Everyone was similarly convinced that their town was going to be the next target, even if they were a little town in the middle of nowhere. "Our town of Bumblefuck, South Dakota (population 690) has the largest styrofoam pig statue west of the Mississippi! Terrorists might fly planes into that too! It's a prime target!"
People started taping up their windows and trying to make their houses or apartments airtight out of fear of chemical and biological attacks. There were news reports warning people that turning your house into an airtight box was a bad idea because, y'know, you need air to breathe.
"[X] supports terrorism!" and “if we do [X], the terrorists win!” were used as arguments for everything.  "Some rich Arab you never heard of donated to his organization that backs Hamas which backs al-Queda, and also owns stock in a holding company that has partial ownership of the Pringles company, so if you eat Pringles you're supporting terrorism!" "The terrorists want to tear down our freedoms and our way of life and rule us through fear! Eating what you want is one of our freedoms as Americans! If you're afraid to eat Pringles, the terrorists win!" (I promise you that this sort of argument is in no way hyperbole.) (This argument is how Halloween was saved, by the way.  “If we cancel Halloween, the terrorists win!”)
People worked 9/11 into everything, and I mean everything, whether it was appropriate or not.  If you went to the grocery store the tortilla chips would remind you to support the troops on the packaging. Used car sales would be dedicated to our brave first responders. You couldn't wipe your ass without the toilet paper rolls reminding you to never forget the fallen of 9/11, and again, this is not hyperbole. My uncle, who lived in Ohio and had never been to New York except to visit once in the 70′s, died of a stroke about 8 months after 9/11, and the priest brought up the attacks at the eulogy.
On a similar local note, on the day of 9/11, after the towers went down, gas stations in my home town immediately jacked up gas prices.  The mayor had the cops go around and force them to take them back down.  I doubt any of that was legal.
Before 9/11, Christianity in America - and religion in general - was on a downward swing, with reddit-tier atheism on the upswing. Religion was outdated superstition from a bygone age. The day after 9/11? Every single church was PACKED. (This wasn't a bad thing, but the power-hungry on the Evangelical Right saw this as a golden opportunity to grab power and influence.)
EDIT: By Popular Demand - Freedom Fries. I initially left these off because they came a couple years after the initial panic and most people thought they were kind of absurd (and I don't recall anyone really going along with it other than maybe some local diners here and there). France didn't want to get involved in our world policing so some folks were like "TRAITORS!" and wanted to call french fries "Freedom Fries" instead, so as to stick it to the French.
Besides dumb shit like that…it’s really hard to overstate how completely the national mood and character changed in the span of a day, or how much of the current culture war is a result of the aftermath. (9/11 was the impetus for the sharp rise in power of the Evangelical Right, who made themselves utterly odious and the following backlash helped the rise of the current Progressive Left, for instance.)

the fact that so many peoples first response to seeing all these palestinian children orphaned is not ‘wow we should really do something to ensure these children live in a world where they don’t have to fear waking up to a bomb being dropped on their parents heads’ and instead is ‘oh em gee how can i adopt these children whose culture i have 0 knowledge of whatsoever and bring them to my homeland thousands of miles away, thereby thrusting them into another deeply traumatizing situation’ is actually kind of wild to me.
please be so serious …. they don’t want you adopting their children. you guys do realize that arabs have a deep sense of family and community right… even with 0 family members left there are still so many people who will step in and make sure those children are looked after. those kids don’t need rescuing from their homeland, they need their homeland to be safe so they can have yknow, a chance at life. they don’t need new families, they need for their families to not be murdered in the dead of the night. why don’t we work on that instead and drop the savior mindset please????? to do nothing towards the cause of palestinian freedom but offer to adopt their children is nuts.
ps. it would benefit a lot of people to do basic research and realize that the process of adoption into a lot of western countries serves to completely erase the identity of the child and also is not in line with the principles / general process of adoption in islam (which is the religion of a fair majority of these kids). ‘offering’ to take them from all they know is disrespectful enough without the consideration that in doing so you would completely be overstepping multiple rules and processes of their religion and culture.
none of us want any more kids to die but ‘save the children’ doesn’t mean the solution is to let anna from florida have them. it means the solution is to make sure they have a future where apartment buildings don’t fall over their heads while they sleep.
