Now that I have that spare copy of Lucian's Assigment on my desk, I can't help noticing the GIGANTIC ball of light behind him, which, in a whimsical little brain association moment, keeps reminding me of the time my friends and I were, uh, pursued? by a giant ball of light? No I am not making this up yes Bill Cipher was involved let me stress again how little I am making this up
My friends and I were on a road trip and we were supposed to stop by Confusion Hill and see the Bill Cipher statue during the day. At a normal time, like normal people. Then my stupid ass accidentally got on the wrong freeway and took us to San Francisco and THAT was a whole thing, but we ended up passing Confusion Hill at around 11:00 at night
Exhibit A:
Tumblr media
I stayed in the car with the engine running bc uh. we were not supposed to be there. but a few friends got out to take pictures on the nice DSLR. and eventually one of them started SHRIEKING and we managed to get everyone back in there car and talking and they just keep going "there's a light! there's a light!"
And sure enough, there is a ball of light approaching us. Assuming we've pissed off a security guard, I stick my head out the window and say "hello!" waiting for the "Hey you have to leave now"
No response.
Light comes closer.
Shrieking becomes universal as I throw it in reverse and get the hell out of there
Exhibit B:
Tumblr media
Anyway.
Lucian 🤝🏼 me
Big fuckoff balls of light

Apr 2021 Wins
Started typing this on 4th apr lmaooo
1 - went to mcd. bought chicken + rice with the app promo. there’s a staff helping me on the order machine lol i feel badd there’s no need to do thatt. ate my lunchmade by mom at mcd’s muschola and went to sbux bcs its tumbler day. green tea latte w skim milk as usual. sent dr triya’s translation. ecmocard. started rereading goong (AGAIN. i probably have read it like 3 times minimum). still bring some feels
2 - its holiday today. spent almost the whole daylight rereading goong (turns out its pronounce ‘gung’ not ‘gong’ lol ive been wrong all this time) and finished it. the scene where they stare at each other, separated by the castle door, always gets me. got the old ipad charged (the screen are like 30% close to detaching and falling apart) and started AOT
3 - spent the whole day reading AOT. i like it when i have mini purposes in life (eg: finishing a manga series). AOT rly talks a lot about what do you want to do in life, the consequences of your choices and how you have to live with it. i felt triggered in a good way. the characters dont rly judge other’s choices, but they question them. discuss about it. give you some moral push. second gladi today. my vbg was still filpped hhhh. read aot until i felt sleepy and fell asleep. woke up very near subuh and prayed isya. my toxic trait is the horrible self care (and im talking bare minimum lol hehe lmao)
4 - finished aot. Asked irun about some aot explanations and she sent 5 paragraphs in one bubble. Slept. Flavola, kopsus coklat and somay. Also ate japota honey butter. Did 1 long input of ecmocard. Followed baepsae choreo. Moved my body a bit. Wow im not immediately sleeping. Amazing
5 - arrived at harkit 11-ish and went back about 1pm loll. super hungry when im arriving in kalideres. bought tahu colek worth 3000 (i wonder how the seller hears me through my 2 layers of mask), roti sisir and some ice cream in alfamidi. my fitlife protein powder ran out again. its my 2nd already. did some ecmocard, wasted my time after maghrib
6 - woke up late. did not have the mental strength to go to harkit so i decided to just stay home. bought sbux 1L green tea and macchiato. wasted the daylight and finally did some ecmocard in the evening,,,,
7 - off to harkit 7.30-ish pm in the rain. Took some data for ecmocard. Went to salemba to get tabung and surat bebas pustaka. Had breakfast slash lunch first, tried guudfuud (red rice, beef and omega egg). I like that the rice was not too much. Met up w ness ren and talked about isip dilemmas at sky. Afterwards went to flavola. Ordered mie rebus and roasted milk tea cause i somehow feel sooo hungry and in need of calories. It tasted so good, i was sitting in my usual seat facing the window, and the sky was a mixture of blue and grey. Brought croissant and sakura pocky at indomart. Ate the bread immediately after indomie. Went back home. Juan brought tahu gejrot that was delicious and crunchy. Internship files briefing by akis. Fell asleep
8 - woke up. Saw that dr retha was up for interview. Panicked. Thankfully it was at 12. I left home at 9:40 ish and arrived 11:50. Its a long ass way. Turns out i was interviewed with ka agassi. The doctors are so kind. They explained the gist of anesthesiology profession, and how its a choice you make, and its okay as long as you like what you do. Tried halo bowl for lunch. Sous vide chicken, rice, caesar sauce, beef bacon, and the deliciouss butter broccoli. Went back to kalideres and to starbucks. I only spent <2 hrs in there (a waste of money, i know). Bought decaf hazelnut latte (apparently the beans were kenyan something? Medium?) and butter croissant (need to cushion my stomach). Did GCP certification and sent it to the ever so kind mba Ai. Still got energy from the caffeine, did some ecmocard, read quran, read.... Toji fanfic 🤦‍♀️
9 - went to rsf w mom. We took the wrong way and had to take the long way but thank god theres still time to spare. Met dr rara. Some briefing. Went to rscm w agassi, submitted files for ijazah, went back to RSF. Girlll the cost of transport. MRT: 12K. Grab: 16-17k. Thats one way trip. Bought food at rsf canteen. Eocru briefing by the research coordinator. Ward tour w dr retha. Snacked on ovaltine provided by mba ai. Went home after maghrib by tj. Liqo along the way. Glad bersih (came late). Drank macchiato for some strength but still fell asleep quickly.i shouldnt have laid down
10 - kebakaran jenggot in the morning due to green screen positioning. Finally got the appropriate setup (after many fabric tries and cutting my mukena) at 08:30. Finished showering 08:45. Zoom was opened at 9 lmao. Somehow finished before 09:30. Zoompah w mom and dad along side me. After its ovee, some "photoshoot" w fam. At this point i was truly rly sleepy. Took of my makeup. Changed my clothes. And then racil silv dev showed up lol. I got gifts c: and then atikah came. And then i redid my makeup, this time with the help of friends to create fantastic eye make up look (which i can never pull off). Eyebrows by sil, eyeshadow and liner by cheldev lol. Took some photos. Dajen came. Talked. Videocalled w pupuy. A surprise gift from fianti came. And then chel dajen went back at 8. Still cant sleep. Slept at like 11-12
11 - lazed. Woke up, ate pizza (mom bought 2 of phd's 1m pizza) and bakwan, slept again. Matcha latte and ecmocard. Watched a bit of 2nd sinau
12 - off to rsf at 06:20. Arrived 07:15 ish. Lunch was ayam penyet accompanied by snacks that mba ai bought. Off to harkit at 14:05 (bcs my laptop somehow shut down and i lost all the unsubmitted data). And then off to kalideres at 15:30 ish to meet up w clara and search for clothes for almira's wedding. Went to lippo bcs clar saw this dress that kinda looks like the brokat given. We ate at ramen ya. It doesnt rly make you feel full, the filliny sensation was kinda like indomie. Saw that the dress looked different. Ate 1 boba pancake together at banban. Continued on to the tailor in kebon jeruk. The location was in an alley, and it was raining lol. Quoting clara: "the unnecessary struggles". The tailor was quite helpful (and she looks experienced). Arrived at clara's at 8 ish. Picked up by mom with car (it was raining) and arrived at abt 9. Hurriedly showered and tarawih and tidied up AND ITS ONLY 09:45. Its crazy how efficient one use time (and at the same time, how wasteful one can be)
13 - first day of fasting. The morning was spent taking samples. I stupidly took a sample thats not yet labeled im sorry :(((( i felt kinda tired and wanted to give up this. Give up anesthesia. Went back home at 14:00 and its cloudy. The bus was the nicer types and it was COLD. Read quran along the way. Picked up by juan. Opened laptop. And then its iftar time. I was sooo sleey and the tarawih was so long thst i closed my eyes along the way. Fianti called after tarawih, we talked til abt 21:30. And then i fell asleep
14 - went to rscm. Submitted serkom files. Met dr dyah and i hope we could somehow meet her again if we study in fkui again aamiin. Went to rsf by mrt. Arrived in lebak bulus just before it was raining. The bus took a while to arrive (usually theyre there, waiting). Its still raining like crazy so i took grabcar to AR from pesakih (39k). Played with my phone til iftar. Played phone again after tarawih and fell asleep
15 - i felt rlyy lazy and cant bring myself to wake up. Off to rsf at 07:15. There were coordinator ppl. Took sample. It was raining when i went back but i took grabbike from kalideres. Wasted my time and did not do ecmocard
16 - sampling. Snacked on keripik pisang at the room. Went back early at 13:15 ish. Picked up by juan. Sleeeept (and this is before the nightmareish mistake began)
17 - i did a mistake by telling dr retha (who took the sample today) the wrong patient (it switched in my unreliable memory. I feel terrible. Thank god shes quite chill abt it (?). Read jujutsu kaiseeen. Went to flavola. Did 1 ecmocard. Went to bandar jakarta baywalk by motorbike. Spent 135k and was quite full with many varieties. Arrived home at about 20:50. Turns out juan also had bukber with his friends. Phone call with fiiii, talked abt dimrob
18 - lazed all day, read jjk, finished my part of ecmocard (gave genky to ekal cause i was a dumbass at getting data). Ate mom's mentai rice, siomay. Drank green tea latte. Read jjk til 145 (mentok) at night. Proceeds to consume all things jjk lmaoo
19 - we took sooo long to get samples. Finished at 13:00. Went to rm with dr rara. Went back home. Watched the third sinau. Read the IMMACULATE jjk fics by celestialmechanics im IN LOVEEEE with the way s/he writes ughhhh
20 - samples took faster than usual. Mba ai did not came today. Went to RM and did some work there. Off to AR by 15:00. Arrived close to maghrib. Did not do any work afterwards lmao. Did not even wash my face
21 - magang as usual. Note to self: sit on the right side of the bus. Did nothing yesterday. Felt like shit after tarawih (but i showered before maghrib!!)
22 - todays problem was the swab sample not being there even though the staff allegedly already took it. Huft. Took a shower and out on vitacid (i cant remember the kast time i put on vitacid 😳 its probably been... a week or two?
23 - samples finished quite quickly. Already going home at 12. Lazedddd and lazed and lazed. Waited for emir to pick me up so i went to dm. Read an immaculate itadori x megumi fix thats just full of feels. Started demon slayer lets see
24 - literally just laid in bed reading manga and seeing tiktok and slept again and suddenly its 1 am. Showered. Still in a lazy mode. Havent begun clires work. Watched leah's vlog that said "go do things youve been putting off!". Finally finished the third and last video of Sinau Yuk ICU class with dr. Zeta, SpAn lolll even though the actual last class was on 7th apr. iftar was fish and chips and salad yuum
25 - woke up at like 1am since i slept too much yesterday. Ate tan ek tjoan bread and drank sbux matcha latte. Did some intern work. Read a bit of quran. Sahur. Cant even sleep again so i showered. Off with mom and dad (09:30) since dad’s going to get vaccinated at skk migas. Mom drove me to ara’s place (11:00). Talked a bit and even read quran again there. Off to GI (13:00) to meet up w regen. Walked around. Bought a discounted TBS green tea facial wash. Went back home by TJ (16:00). the bus station is a bit closer now. Arrived home close to maghrib (17:30). hurriedly showered and went to sleep (properly) after tarawih. A good good sleep since i got 9400 steps today and that tired me out lmaooo (bare minimum yall, i know).
26 - woke up still sleepy. Slept again after iftar and woke up at 07:30. Skipped shower and off to RSF lmao. Went to medical record. Walked to the front of RSF originally planning to go to lebak bulus by angkot but i saw none. So i went through mrt instead. Stopped by at kebon jeruk and walked 800 meter (that tireeed me and made me feel parched under the sun) to risma busana for clothes fitting. Took gojek to jembatan gantung (turns out the closer halte to flyover was taman kota). Iftar was chicken noodle and risol and banana and i felt fullll and i slept
27 - today is off day since im alternating with agassi. read quran. watched shadow and bone (with 1,5x speed except for kanej and matthias nina scenes). didnt rly do any magang work except the table asked by dr retha. i feel like usually im operating on 70%. sleeping more doesnt rly add that. i need caffeine or physical activity. before i know it, its close to iftar.
28 - i ((felt)) like i had a decent amount of energy today. shouldve done some work between sahur and leaving the house but i ended up reading vampire knight lmaoooo the scenes had no business bringing so much butterflies. sampling together w agassi. mba ai didnt come in today. after agassi left did some magang work. i also went to RM to ask for more RM to bu dian. took angkot to lebak bulus for the first time. paid 5k. i had no idea which angkot went to lebak bulus and the driver (somehow knowing the right words to say) said “lebak bulus lebak bulus”. didnt read much quran on the way back. i just close my eyes and relaxed. felt kinda low on sugar. watched more shadow and bone on the way back and at home until close to iftar. didnt do anything after tarawih. slept hoping i woke up early (which i did, at 3am. but i slept again)
29 - im supposed to have ample energy but i just stuck around my bed until its time to get ready to go. read some kanej fic lol. I dont rly do anything productive after arriving home
30 - made intern log, magang as usual. Did not go to rm. Finished watching shadow and bone. Rested bcs tomorrow's saturdayyy

36 Things I Learned About Gardening in 2019
While gardening is something that's always been part of my life, 2019 was my first year of really embracing it fully. I've had lots of houseplants for many years, but while I've helped, I've never paid too much attention to outdoor gardening or tried to learn too much. Before this year I participated in some gardening with my mum, always filling a few pots of my own with bedding plants, and helping with some stuff (though never enough) in the vegetable garden, greenhouse, and flower beds. But I was never really involved in the planning or seed-starting or anything like that.
In 2019 I fully embraced gardening, and I started the year with plenty of good intentions. Of course, things don't usually go quite as you planned, sometimes for the worse, sometimes for the better. I learned plenty about gardening this year, from failures, successes, and surprises. Here are some of the lessons I learned over the course of 2019.
Don’t book a 21 day trip in the middle of your 120-day growing season. Since I launched into full-time freelance copywriting this year, I realized that I was technically location independent. Thanks to convenient holiday booking by a few friends, I had the opportunity to spend 3 weeks visiting my brother in his new town of Terrace, BC. I had plenty of fun. It was really cool to be able to work from somewhere else. But, my trip was from about July 21 to August 11.
Guess what's happening in the garden in those weeks? Everything is starting to ripen. Particularly, peas need to be picked. Peas are a priority crop for us because we all love garden peas. I was gone and mum basically had to handle the whole harvest herself. It felt pretty shitty. I also missed several other things that were ready for harvest during those weeks. Next year I'll plan my visits before planting or after fall harvest.
I am not organized enough to keep a garden journal I fully intended to keep a garden journal, right from January when we started seedlings, through to the end of the season. It didn't intend it to have long entries, just notes about what, when, and where we planted, significant weather dates, interesting observations, and events. I managed to keep it updated from January 21 until May 12. I think I stopped when I went to Terrace for a week in May, and I never picked it back up. We'll see if I can keep it up in 2020. I did draw up diagrams, with rough estimations of where we planted different vegetable crops this year. I'll do that again next year. Now, I need to find those sheets and make sure they're glued into my garden journal notebook.
THIN the plants. Plant spacing recommendations are there for a reason. When I'm planting things with small seeds, like carrots, I tend to be a little heavy-handed... There's a reason your seed packages have plant spacing recommendations. Follow them. If you don't, you'll end up with smaller vegetables that are often very tangled together. We ended up with pretty small carrots this year, simply because mum and I didn't have the heart to thin them out. So, thin them out, or space your seeds more appropriately.
Garden vlogs are great, but I need to simplify them if I’m actually going to get them up I started a series of garden vlogs at the beginning of May. I enjoyed it, and I liked the idea but found that I didn't have a ton of time for editing the videos and actually getting them posted. My latest vlog went up on August 27. After that, I collected footage for several more end of season vlogs. And I've never got round to editing them together and posting them.
That there actually are plants I can grow in my dungeon basement apartment (more on that in the future) Sometime late in the summer or early in the fall I got the idea to start testing supposed low-light houseplants in my basement suite. My bedroom has two tiny windows, one facing west that gets a lot of shade from a large evergreen and a medium-sized chokecherry tree, and a north window that's under the overhang of a small patio. It's the brightest room in my suite. So, I've collected a variety of supposed low-light plants and I'm watching their progress. So far its been going surprisingly well. I'm hoping to develop these experiments into more regular blog content in 2020.
Follow seeding directions more closely Maybe my first gardening failure of the year was pansies. Seriously, the easiest garden flower to grow. But I screwed something up and lost a full tray of seedlings. I don't remember the exact details, now, but I realized after a couple of weeks that I hadn't followed the seeding directions correctly, which is probably what led to the failure of my pansy seedlings.
Keep your eyes peeled for pests We developed an aphid infestation in our seedlings early this spring. For whatever reason, we didn't notice it until we'd already had our seedlings in the greenhouse for a couple of weeks. Unfortunately, we lost quite a few plants because it was such an infestation when we finally noticed. We did get ladybugs, twice. And they did pretty well. But, we also ended up having to use insecticidal soap, after all our ladybugs had ditched the greenhouse, to finish the job.
Silver Sparkle Pilea is EXTREMELY temperature sensitive  Back to my houseplant experiment. I had a silver sparkle pilea. I loved it. But I accidentally let it dry too much once. It hadn't fully died yet, so I started watering it properly again and set it in my west window sill for a little more light. It had popped up one tiny set of new leaves that were looking promising. But then, we had the first night where it got to about -12. That one set of tiny leaves was toasted. The window sills are still pretty warm, and it wasn't touching the glass, but apparently, it was still too cold for it.
Poinsettias are not poisonous They're not. I've had to research this for several articles this year. Poinsettia is not poisonous to people or pets. A 50-pound child would have to eat 500 poinsettia leaves to be in danger. You're going to have issues long before a child eats 500 leaves, namely the fact that your child is clearly part bionic if they like to eat green things that could possibly be construed as healthy. For the record, I ate a leaf off our poinsettia about two weeks ago in the middle of lunch, because people were arguing about it. It is not a delightful flavour, but I had zero ill effects.
Marimo Moss balls are pretty cool I got one. They're fascinating. I'm not sure about the ethical implications of buying them. They seem to be dwindling in numbers in their natural habitat, so probably our fascination with them is not great for their natural survival. On the other hand, perhaps the popularity will help drive some research into them and maybe we'll be able to find out why their numbers are dwindling.
Writing about gardening is actually a real job Seriously. I actually get paid to write about gardening. I don't get paid to write about gardening on my own blog, but one of my main clients pays me to write gardening blogs on a wide variety of topics and it’s amazing.
The more you learn about gardening the more you realize you don’t know There's that quote from Einstein: "The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know." This is probably not surprising, but it’s true... I've learned more about gardening this year than in the rest of my life, probably. And the more I learn, the more I realize I know basically nothing about gardening.
Plant more sweet peas! Sweet peas are so easy, and rewarding. The more blossoms you cut, the more flowers they produce. So plant them everywhere. They do need something to climb, so don't plant them out in the open unless you're planning to put some stakes or trellises in for them.
Ferns are dicks Seriously, they just are. Don't try to keep them as houseplants unless you live somewhere that is naturally humid. Ours did fine all summer, and as soon as we started the furnace this fall they were like "NOOOOOOOOOO, I can't go on! I'm going to mope and look like shit forever-more."
Learn to love terra cotta Seriously. I had a few challenges with houseplants this year with overwatering. I have slowly been switching all my houseplants into terra cotta pots, and they're much happier in general. I don't love the orange of terra cotta, but once you have all of your plants in it, it just kind of fades into a background neutral colour and you don't notice it anymore. Terra cotta dries faster and allows you to bottom water.
Overwatering is worse than underwatering As mentioned above, I nearly drowned a few plants this year. They'll die more quickly from overwatering than they will from underwatering.
Freshley overalls from Dovetail are the only gardening pants you’ll ever need. Seriously, get yourself a pair. They are AMAZING.
Rubber gloves for weeding keep your hands and nails cleaner and more moisturized. Legit, these are better than any other gardening glove I've used. Most gardening gloves are too thick for weeding out little weeds, and your hands still end up dried out. Rubber gloves are thin enough that you can grab small weeds and seedlings, you can feel well through them, they keep your hands from drying out. They also last surprisingly longer than expected. The blue painting gloves you can buy at the hardware store are the best. You can take them off and re-use them for several days. Simply leave them inside out, then flip them the right way, blow a little air into them like a balloon to pop the fingers back the right away, and put them back on.
Buy the damn bulbs, you’ll regret it if you don’t  My grandma bought tulip bulbs for me and mum this fall. We got them in just in time, it legit started snowing as we covered the last bit up. But, I didn't get any Allium bulbs, because they were pretty pricey, and my budget has been tight this year, and I REALLY wish I had.
Ladybugs are fucking awesome Seriously, they're brutal little pest destroyers. If you have a greenhouse, get some.
Thrillers, Fillers, and Spillers A great guideline for filling planters. Thriller would be something tall and interesting, filler would be something shorter to fill in the mid-level height, and a spiller that trails over the sides of your pots.
Airplants are weird Tillandsia, they just are weird. I'm still learning more about them, and trying to keep mine alive through crazy dry Alberta winter.
Water culture for orchids is a thing Moss is really not that great a medium for orchids. I don't know much about water culture, but I pulled my orchids out of their saturated and rotting moss, and switched them to water culture, we'll see how it goes.
Lettuce is grown outside tasted even better than lettuce from the greenhouse Seriously. The lettuce we grew in the raised garden beds tasted way better than the stuff we grew in the greenhouse, which tastes way better than the stuff from the grocery store.
Fertilize the tomatoes We start the year with good intentions to fertilize our tomatoes in the greenhouse at least once a week. But, then we fall off the wagon and barely keep up with watering. But it’s important. We would have had a much better harvest this year if we'd kept it up. Tomatoes are hungry beasts.
Start your glads EARLY I started my Gladiolus bulbs in pans on April 3rd. I may actually start them even earlier in 2020. They started blooming towards the end of July and lasted all the way through August, and I think there were even a few stragglers left in September. I loved them.
Lemon cucumbers are delightful They're super yummy, try some.
Starbucks plastic to-go cups aren’t good planters They're top-heavy. They don't have drainage, and because they have so much soil, it tends to hang onto the water and not dry out fast enough.
DRAINAGE Everything needs better drainage than I thought it did, hence, switching to terra cotta.
Aphids are assholes Mealybugs are assholes Fungus gnats are assholes I don't think I need to expand on these.
You always need more houseplants Duh.
Tiny pots, like 5" and smaller need to be watered more than once a week in winter. Everyone says "oh you have to water your plants less in winter because they need a period of dormancy. This is true. But if you have lots of houseplants in tiny terra cotta pots, you have got to be vigilant. Terra cotta dries fast in normal humidity, but it dries even faster in dry furnace heated air in the winter. I water my small terra cotta potted plants at least twice a week. Some of the smaller ones even three times a week.
Bottom watering for the win. This is my solution to overwatering. Everything has trays or saucers or is set in a tray for watering. I fill the tray and let them soak up as much as they want. If the water is gone in 10 minutes, I add more, until they stop soaking it up. If there's water left sitting in the saucer after an hour, I dump it.
I am emotionally attached to our trees Late this fall my mum decided to cut down our ornamental crab apple tree. For good reason, it looks beautiful for 2 weeks of the year, and spends the other 50 dropping rotten crab apples on the sidewalk, my car, the driveway, the flower bed, the lawn… But I’m still sad about it. Unreasonably sad.
So there are just a fraction of things I learned about gardening this year. My goal for 2020 is to prioritize writing for my own blog a little more frequently. There are endless gardening things I can talk about, so cheers to more writing and learning about the topics that I'm most passionate about.

Vancouver + Whistler, British Columbia Travel Guide
It’s been a while since I shared a travel guide around here. I believe Grand Cayman was the last one in January. There’s certainly been no shortage of travel since then, but lately I just haven’t felt aligned to make travel guides out of each trip. Truthfully, I’ve found it challenging to balance both being in the moment while travelling and also capturing the experience for you. I love being able to share my best tips, but lugging around multiple cameras, capturing pretty pictures, filming videos and asking C to be my personal photographer isn’t always the most conducive to being present. It’s a fine line to walk…
That being said, I’m also learning that maybe, just maybe, I’m putting too much pressure on myself. I don’t need to have a video with every travel guide. I don’t need to take every picture with my gigantic professional camera. I don’t need to capture every single moment. That’s what my trip to British Columbia taught me – that sometimes we aren’t the best judge of what we need.
So I packed up all my gear for my trip to Vancouver and Whistler and decided to just let my alignment dictate what felt right, rather than try to get in alignment with what my brain told me was right. In the end I had such an incredible trip where I came home with memories to share with you guys and memories just for me. It just feels so right.
I captured some on my phone, some on my camera and decided to leave the vlogging camera in the comfort of my suitcase. I’m on a bit of a hiatus right now from video (I’ll be back after the wedding!) and honestly, I’m glad I didn’t film at all this trip. Though to be fair I did take about 100 snapchat videos of C with his baby cousin that make my heart swell and my ovaries ache (sorry it’s the truth) that I’m saving just for me. They’re sooooo cute.
The original reason for the trip was a conference in Whistler and then C and I extended our stay and spent a few days in Vancouver to see his family and hang with friends. I had never been to BC which is both embarrassing as a born-and-raised Canadian and legitimately made me feel like I was missing out on a part of the world that I knew I would love. I was right. Vancouver and Whistler are AMAZING, and I actually cannot wait to back.
But with that, let’s jump into the British Columbia Travel Guide…
WHERE WE STAYED
Whistler
The Four Seasons Whistler – truthfully C and I never would have spent the money on this ourselves, but the conference put us up here and we definitely weren’t complaining! Understandably, the amenities were amazing and we totally made ourselves home at the spa and outdoor pools and hot tubs.
Vancouver
The Georgian Court Hotel*- we booked our hotel last minute on a really good deal through Hotel Tonight. The hotel was in a great location near Yaletown, had perfect amenities and was a great place to crash if you aren’t looking for any over-the-top frills.
*We’ve gotten some amazing deals on hotels (up to 60% off!) through Hotel Tonight and if you want to save $25 off your first trip with them, use the code DKUGELMASS when signing up.
WHAT WE DID
Whistler
Ski Whistler – yup definitely didn’t ski, but I wasn’t going to write a Whistler Travel Guide and not include skiing. C has skied there are few times and says it’s amazing, but being dropped off on the top of a mountain and told to slide down to the bottom is not my version of a good time.
Head to the Spa – Now this is my version of a good time. The conference actually had a morning at the Spa Scandinave but yo’ girl was late to arrive and it got totally booked up. I’ve heard it’s incredible and based on the other Scandinave spas I’ve been to in Canada, I’m sure it’s amazing. We did however enjoy the Spa at the Four Seasons and I’m definitely not complaining about that one…
Visit the Olympic Village – There’s a bunch of little shops in the courtyard and it’s fun to see the olympic rings and the amazing views of Blackcomb.
Walk around the Village – Admittedly the village is a bit kitchy, but there’s also lots of shops you can visit and restaurants for your Apres Ski.
Vancouver
Granville Island – We loved our little excursion to Granville Island! Visit the food market, the little artisan shops and just wander around the island for a few hours. We took the ferry since we thought it would be fun, but you can also access it by car or public transit.
Walk Around Stanley Park – Stanley Park is actually amazing! For one, all the trails make you feel like you’re in the middle of the wilderness, not the city and it also showcases the amazing flora and fauna of the PNW. I could have spent 3 days in there.
Vancouver Seawall – Lots of people recommended running or biking the seawall but due to the fact that I hate biking and it called for rain, we opted to walk. Good choice! We started at English Bay and walked along to Third Beach before weaving through Stanley Park. It was the perfect way to spend an afternoon!
WHERE WE ATE
Whistler
The Green Moustache – The token healthy juice bar in Whistler. The food is delicious, quick and perfect if you want to top up on your green juice or kombucha. I had the kitchari upon suggestion and it was SO GOOD. My only regret is not buying dessert.
Sidecut – This is the restaurant at the Four Seasons and truly it’s delicious. I would recommend asking to eat in the lounge so you don’t spend an arm and a leg on your meal. Still not cheap but the quality is there and the service is amazing.
Naked Sprout – Similar to The Green Moustache, Naked Sprout has your organic, healthy fare but this time I didn’t forgot to grab dessert. The Mint, Goji and Spirulina bar was INSANE. A great place to stop for smoothies or a quick bite to eat too.
Araxi – Happy hour oysters. Need I say more?
Mongolie Grill – I think this might be a chain, but if you’re looking to top a plate full of veggies and pick your own flavor, this place is for you! We stumbled upon it for lunch and it was perfect and affordable.
Vancouver
*The food in Van was INSANE. Seriously so good. We ate in with C’s cousins one night but otherwise, basically just ate out our whole trip. If your only reason for visiting Vancouver is the food, you’ve made a good decision.
Chambar – two big realizations, brunch and donuts are HUGE in Vancouver. We couldn’t get into Medina or Jam Bar but it was a blessing in disguise because Chambar was incredible and the brunch was to-die-for. Also if someone could please explain why every restaurant in Van serves donuts, that would be helpful!
Beach Bay Cafe – This was the perfect place to stumble upon after our walk through Stanley Park. We ordered a bunch of the Happy Hour appetizers and some beer and everything was fresh and delicious. Highly recommend!
Yaletown Distillery – The cocktails here were SO GOOD. It’s pricey and definitely trendy but if you’re looking for a great place to grab drinks, go here!
Minami – One of the best meals of my life (not hyperbole). The sushi here is incredible. Get the Salmon Oshi Sushi and then order it at least 3 more times. My only regret is not eating every meal here!
A few other random things…
-There is no Uber/Lyft in Vancouver – Yes, it drove me crazy. Yes, you will spend way too much on cabs. Yes, they take credit cards. PHEW.
-There is a bus that takes you directly from the Vancouver airport to Whistler. It’s about $60 each way. We had a shuttle through our conference, but C took it on the way up and said it was easy. You just pick it up from International Departures.
-Bring a rain coat. It rains A LOT. Most hotels will offer umbrellas but if umbrellas aren’t your thing make sure you have your rain coat.
-We only had 48 hours in Vancouver so if you have more time, I’d suggest getting out of the city to do some hikes, but since we didn’t have that kind of time we decided to eat instead!
-You will have the best time! Honestly, Vancouver and BC in general blew me away. I loved it and can’t wait to go back!
Have you ever been to BC? Where should I travel to next with my slightly less pressure-filled attitude;) ?
