Tag ask game!
I got tagged by: @georgiedoesntfloat Thank you!
Last song you listened to: Intentionally? "The Mothman Song (Believe in the Power of the Mothman!)" by The Paranormal Song Warrior. It's just so silly and delightful!
Unintentionally? The classical piece from this Simpsons meme video. Shazam tells me it's the overture from La gazza ladra.
Last movie you watched: Disney's Beauty and the Beast. It's a comfort movie for me!
Currently watching: Legend of Korra, ESOTERICA, Atun-Shei Films, Law & Order: SVU and Organized Crime
Other things I've watched this year: Netflix's John Wayne Gacy Tapes, a little bit of Friday the 13th Part VII (the first one with Kane Hodder), a bunch of YouTube video essays, whatever my spouse feels like watching
Currently reading: My friend's unpublished manuscript!
Currently listening to: The trans antifascist superheroine you've never heard of . by Thought Slime
Currently working on: Knitting a hat, shopping for Christmas presents, planning an Avatar Legends TTRPG campaign, learning about demonology, procrastinating on writing
Current obsession: My Scarlet Hollow fandom has led me to dabble in Western esotericism. I just ordered a fancy copy of Johann Wier's Pseudomonarchia Daemonum, a 16th-century text that was meant to parody demonological books but ended up being a big influence on sincere demonology and magical practice down to this very day. It's going to teach me about 69 (nice) demons and how to summon them!
Tagging if you'd like to! : @crestoflames , @shanklinthestabpossum, @marshvlovestv, @maytheratseatureyes, @thedeafprophet, @the-defiant-heiress, @nimbexy, @tangled-wires-and-a-dead-heart

John Wayne Gacy-The Killer That Had A Job As A Clown Once
I consider(ed) myself a pretty big SKYND fan, and then seemingly went 6 months without noticing any of their new songs. Completely ecstatic for more, I watched through all the videos I had missed, and in the mix was John Wayne Gacy. The song is a 10/10 as far as I'm concerned, but the music video was a bit lack-luster compared to their portfolio. Besides the simple theme and apparent lack of storyline, I couldn't stop thinking about how built around Pogo the Clown the video was.
In most contexts where Gacy is considered, there is very little separation between John and Pogo. He is primarily referred to as the Killer Clown, and is often presented or portrayed in his clown costume and makeup. However, after watching the John Wayne Gacy Tapes on Netflix, listening to a handful of true crime podcasts focusing on his life, and my own research online, I've realized something I didn't think about much until this music video-Gacy never committed any crimes as Pogo, and in fact Pogo was a very small aspect of his life comparatively.
Gacy worked at KFC, owned a construction and renovation business, was a member of multiple clubs and even political parties, among other jobs and extracurriculars. The police that were assigned to monitor him repeatedly referred to Gacy as never sitting still for too long, always driving around meeting people and working.
As for Gacy's crimes, Pogo's bright red nose stayed out of trouble. The worst things Gacy ever did in his Pogo costume was squeeze the occasional woman's bottom (he explained that as a clown, he could get away with sneaky grabs like that because everyone would just laugh it off as clown shenanigans). A large portion of his victims were even hired to work for PDM (his construction company) before being murdered, proving Gacy had no issue separating work and pleasure. However, Pogo remained a pure figure in his life-his white gloves staying clean.
So why is Gacy so strongly linked to Pogo? He could have been known by any number of names that may have fit his crimes better: Crawlspace Killer, Construction Killer, even The KFC Killer would have fit (granted, the victim he picked up from KFC escaped with his life) but The Killer Clown is the moniker the world chose for him. I think the answer is pretty obvious-the fear of clowns is nearly as prevalent in our present society as the fear of dark alleys.
Media representation of clowns as otherworldly monsters and killers have been engrained in society's mind, and I think in some ways, for some people, the fact that Gacy dressed as a clown consolidated his demented mind because of this belief. Of course, he was a clown, of course he would become a serial killer. This may not be an intentional connection, I believe it's mainly subconscious, but the fact remains that once that mental pathway of killer-to-clown is formed, it's easy to send people like Gacy along that path.
Rather than trying to rationalize how the successful owner of a construction company and member of prominent political parties could murder 33 boys and men, it's just easier to believe a deranged man dressed as a clown did it.
Thanks for listening,
goblinpocket

BEST TV OF 2022
The BBC blazed through all the 1990s with their Top of the Pops documentary series as well as a Cool Britannia edition of Rock Family Trees, a documentary on the Hacienda club in Manchester and a series on the members of The Rolling Stones.
I watched documentaries on Joan Collins, the life + death of Marilyn Monroe, Diana Dors, Nikki Grahame (it was so sad when she died), Mary Whitehouse (infamous UK campaigner on censorship/morals), plus Channel 4 did a brilliant one on trans pioneer/model, April Ashley.
I also watch quite a few documentaries on art – Netflix + BBC both did good ones on Andy Warhol. Sky Arts also tend to do a lot of good stuff – I particularly enjoyed Back to Basquiat and The Black Italian Renaissance. Mary Beard did a series on forbidden art that raised interesting questions about censorship. BBC also did a couple of good limited series, Art that Made Us (that looked at different art throughout UK history) + Sensationalists (that looked at the Young British Artists). It was also good to see the return of Secrets of the Museum.
I watch quite a few history programmes esp. those that look at cultural/social history. BBC2 did a couple of good series w/Big Oil vs. The World (how the oil companies suppressed evidence of climate change) + The Decade The Rich Won. There was also the return for the final parts of Rise of the Nazis plus Simon Schama and Lucy Worsley both returned with new series. Troy Deeny did one about the lack of Black history on the curriculum + Lenny Henry did a good one about Caribbean Britain. Back in Time also returned with one charting the history of a British Asian family in Birmingham. Channel 4 also did a good one called Made in the 80s. I also loved Sky’s show Kingdom of Dreams about the development of haute couture/high fashion into big business.
I loved the series on film noir that Sky Arts did. Plus, BBC did shows on the history of kids’ TV and the Edinburgh fringe.
BBC did an interesting documentary about the history of London’s secret lesbian club, Gateways plus one about AIDS in the 80s which used tapes of people recorded at the time. Channel 4 also did one called Where Have All the Lesbians Gone? Which looked at why so many gay women are reluctant to identify as lesbians.
I do watch some true crime documentaries, but it depends on what they’re about/what sort of mood I’m in. The Ice-Cream Wars on BBC2 was an interesting look at an arson attack that led to murder in Glasgow + the background to it. Secrets of Playboy + Porn King (about Ron Jeremy) were #MeToo moments for the porn business while Scouting for Girls looked at abuse in the fashion industry. Also watched The John Gacy Tapes on Netflix and The Nilsen Files on BBC (which was exceptionally good). I found the documentary on the ‘Bling Ring’ to be surprisingly good (about a group of Hollywood youngsters who burgled celebrities’ homes.)

Week 6
Throughout the pandemic, I spent a lot of time watching true crime documentaries and shows. John Wayne Gacy is the first person that came to mind when thinking about Freud's psychoanalytic theory. He murdered 33 young boys and was convicted for sexual assault of two young males while working as a clown. Throughout the Netflix documentary, "Conversation with a Killer: The John Wayne Gacy Tapes," it is made clear that Gacy participated in necrophiliac acts. In regards to Freud's theory, Gacy lacked a proper functioning Id. His sexual fantasies resulted in the assaults and deaths of countless young boys. The lack of a functioning superego caused his inability to feel remorse. In the documentary, it was mentioned that he had ASPD (anti-social personality disorder). This is also reflective of his lack of guilt following the brutal murders and assaults of the young boys. The lack of a conscience/superego, in accordance to Freud's theory, explains his inability to stop after the first kill. It is important to mention that Freud's theory does not justify the horrid acts of what society deems as "criminals", however, provides considerable insights on the dark nature of mankind.

Hi! Just sending some random questions your way. 👋
1. Name one thing in your Netflix queue. When you add something, do you actually watch it, or does it languish for months/years/eternity?
2. If you got a new pet tomorrow, what would it be and what would you name it?
3. What condiments do you put on your burgers?
Hi love! Feel free to ask away anytime!
1. I just added Conversations with a killer: The John Wayne Gacy tapes. I do actually watch something. I watch multiple thinks at once never if not my brain goes 'brrrrrrr' some things I watch alone (ATM New girl) but I watch certain things with my family. I've been watching more Hulu at the moment. (ex, me and my dad just restarted Mayans and my sister and brother are watching 9-1-1 in Hulu) I started watching Santa Clarita Diet with my ex but when she broke up with me in January (while I was in the hospital) I haven't bothered finishing the last 4 episides. I have mostly movies in my queue for the most part, TV shows I decor like a hungry goddess who's been trapped in a tomb for eons.
2. Moving bank to my dad's I've had to give away my the Guinea pigs and my two cats... So yeah I'd actually like my cats back! If it's a new pretty is like a corn snake I'd name maize... but the dogs here do not like anything but each other and we're rescued together so 🙃
3 Mood, atmosphere and the way I'm dealing with things aside my go to is bacon cheeseburger with Mayo and pickles. I'll get a side of trance for fries and sometimes add that to my burger also.

I watched The John Wayne Gacy Tapes on Netflix which was a limited documentary series about the infamous American serial killer who murdered over 30 young men + buried most of them under his house. He was finally caught + spent over 10 years on death row before finally being executed. I’d forgotten that he’d actually been married with kids (altho’ his wife had left him + taken the kids before he started murdering people) so I wonder what ever happened to his kids + what it’s like living with that legacy. Plus the series didn’t really go into some of the theories/evidence that he had accomplices.
