Alice in Borderland (Season 2)
TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2022
Alice in Borderland (Season 2, 2022, Japan)
Director: Shinsuke Sato
Writers: Yasuko Kuramitsu & Shinsuke Sato
Mini-review:
I thought the first season of Alice in Borderland was fun, but very far from perfect, and I feel the exact same way about the second (and maybe final?) one. The games are really enjoyable and they move at a solid pace, but they also require you to turn off your brain and not think too much or too seriously about them. The cast is also a somewhat mixed bag: some of the actors are great (my favorite performances are Tao Tsuchiya's and Nijiro Murakami's), but much of the acting is cartoonish and over the top in a way that doesn't really suit the grittiness of the story/setting and breaks the immersion for me. IMHO the best part about this show is the directing. Shinsuke Sato is great at directing thrilling action scenes and he gets to showcase his talents here (the standout sequence is probably the car chase in the first episode). So yeah, I may not love Alice in Borderland, but it's a solid piece of popcorn entertainment.

Under the miracle cherry tree - Episode 8
And there, this is probably a bad idea again, but oh well. You know me. I'm crazy and I ogten do stuff that isn't good for me. Best life motto. So here's the last episode of such a great show, one that is getting in my top favourite, I don't even need to see the end to know it will be a success. Nothing could get this drama to lose points for me. Unless really bad writers took over, but why would they even do that at this point, right?
The cherry tree is about to lose all of his flowers and Haruka closes the news so Mei doesn't see it. She still seems pretty out of it, even though she's trying to act strong. It really breaks my heart.
The ugly mayor threatens again Iori not to dig up too much on the story of how he caused Kota to die. Otherwise it would hurt his dad's hospital.
Mei goes about looking for Kota, but nobody seems to have seen him so far. Both Ryohei and Iori worry about her. I mean, it's obvious she wouldn't be alright. She was moping around for the past seven year, finally got to see the guy she can't forget, but then he has to disappear again. Plus, he doesn't bid his farewell. Like... that's a little hard to accept. Ryohei totally got what Kota wanted to do. Thanks to him, they are back together. But he still wants to do something for him.
Ah, so Kota went to see the grandpa. Or maybe he was just out and met a cat. Cats are just so cute. Then the grandpa found him and took him in. So it seems Kota has only one day left to live. This is so sad and grandpa is just... so direct about it.
Mei meets with Iori. He asks her how she's doing. She says she's fine. That since Kota was gone for seven years, she can give up easily. Then Iori tells her not to push herself. I guess she's trying to convince herself. Iori tells her that since he couldn't do anything for her last time, he wants to do everything he can to help her this time around. But then Mei sees Kota passing by and she follows him in town. She calls out to him but he does'nt move. But then it wasn't Kota, fortunately Iori followed her and stopped her. Mei breaks down. And everyone is worried about Mei.
I mentionned before, but the music of this drama is so pretty. I have to say it again. I just... it's perfect.
Iori couldn't sleep at night too and wakes up, seeming to have made his mind on something. So the next morning, it's all over in the news that there was corruption between the hospital and the mayor and that the mayor is a suspect in the death of Kota. So Kota calls Iori and scolds him for letting things in the out. But Iori told him he didn't confess for his sake, just because he knew for a long time and decided to act according to his feelings. And he asks why wouldn't he do the same. But Kota tells him he's doing this for Mei when Iori blames him for making her sad. He tells him to do what he wants for the time he has left. That Mei waited for him under the cherry tree for seven years and that he shouldn't make her wait any longer. Awww. Iori was so cool right now.
Oh so the old man lost his wife. She died and one day he wrote a wish to see her at the shrine. And she appeared under the cherry tree. They did everything they wanted to do together when she was alive, but didn't have the time to. Kota is worried that maybe he was even more sadder when she left. But the oldman says that it actually helped him to move on.
The friends are all worried about Iori. But then he comes in and he tells Mei to go to the cherry tree because Kota is waiting there for her. Haruka dolls up Mei again. It's like they are seven years back in time. Iori did that to make Kota come out. Such good friends. And now I'm crying again. Kota and Mei both rush to the cherry tree. I don't want Kota to disappear TT The flowers of the tree are slowly all falling down while Mei is waiting for Kota. But he makes it in time.
Finally. Kota confesses his feelings for Mei. And she accepts his confession. And she thanks him for fullfilling her wish. And they finally kiss TT I was afraid he would disappear while they kiss, but he didn't. Not yet. And they kiss again. And the wind blows and he's gone. I'm trying so hard to hold back my tears.
We jump in time one year later and Mei is going back to her home town for the cherry blossoms. She first pays a visit to the shrine and then to the cherry tree. There meets Iori, Ryohei and Haruka. Ryohei is holding Haruka's hand so I think they ended going out together. And it ends on Mei seeing Kota under the cherry tree, smiling. And... that was just so beautiful. Everything about this was perfect. I really wasn't disappointed. The was happy, yet sad, but satisfying. I really didn't lose my time. I thouroughly enjoyed this. And I will develop my feelings on an overall review. I want to try this from now on, once I'm done with a drama, to write a general review, to give an opinion without spoiling, for those who might consider watching. And for organisation purpose actually, but oh well. Until then!
