Is Coffee a Miracle?
Tumblr media
Is the morning coffee ritual like a religion?
Ever since that 9th century goat herder (Kaldi) witnessed his goats dancing and prancing around after eating coffee cherries COFFEE was known to give people a gentle push, or buzz like no other plant, and without any harsh effects afterwards if used responsibly.
Now it would be way too simple to say that religious people drink coffee because it’s not alcohol. Because coffee was commodified, by all three Abrahamic religions, and they all had to contend with how this new coffee beverage fit into each faith’s ideal way of life. And Each religion had their opponents and proponents but they all eventually accepted the beverage because of it's powerful help it had upon the population, and it kept people working longer!
But way, way before any Religious group prayed to their created Gods there were the 'Oromo' people of Ethiopia. They practiced "Waaqeffanna", their indigenous religion that survived Christian and Islamic attempts at conversion. Waaqeffanna is a primarily Oral tradition, so it often gets excluded from historical records, but the religion probably predates all the Abrahamic religions, and it includes a story about coffee. In Oromo tradition, their creator god Waaqa approached a corpse of a man who had refused to do his will. Waaga shed tears over the man’s body, and where his tears hit the ground, the first coffee trees sprouted. Today, roasting and drinking coffee is still central to Oromo religious ceremonies.
.......... and all religions have their stories of how creation began.
Our earliest written history of someone consuming coffee as a beverage come from tales of Sufi mystics in 1414. Sufi Muslims are a sect of mystics focused on the purification of the inner self. After working their day jobs, Sufis would join together for evening prayers, and often enjoy coffee poured out of clay pot beforehand, to perk up their energy. Kind of like a Starbucks coffee shop today........
And although Pope Clement VIII tried to ban coffee outright, by denouncing it as “an invention of Satan" telling followers they risk falling into a trap set by Satan for their souls,...... most of the world ignored the Pope as a Coffee snob and embraced Coffee as a Miracle.
Just try and find a Catholic church today without a coffee pot in its kitchen.......
So the morning coffee may not be a religion, but was definitely advertised from religious dealings with its use, and that's how the world found out about this magic elixir they drink every morning without hesitation, like prayer!

Steve Sobs - Some Nights Last A Lifetime by Waaga Records "Some Nights Last A Lifetime" appears on Steve Sobs new album 'Heavy Heart' out 5/13. Pre-order here : http://ift.tt/1gw1W9q Following last year’s bedroom pop gem “Pretty”, Steve Sobs (aka Brooklyn’s Eric Littmann) plunges into an uncharted forest and emerges with ”Heavy Heart”, a string of ten effortless and quietly inviting new tracks.”You’re in your hometown checking your old hangs, your old ideas” Littmann sings on one such tune. This is nostalgia but a breed that always reaches upward. These are your hardwood floors , the portraits on your mantle. “Heavy Heart” finds a corner in your home and stays there. “Heavy Heart” was inspired by a difficult breakup that fragmented a network of close friends and the resulting aimless suburban free fall. Most of the album was recorded in Eric’s New York City studio apartment last May. It was mastered by Orchid Tapes founder Warren Hildebrand (Foxes In Fiction). http://ift.tt/2j0vGFu

FISHING "Your Mouth"
One of my favorite Aussie indie-pop bands FISHING has a new album coming out this summer (which is their winter) called Shy Glow and "Your Mouth" is the jubilant new single, another delightfully weird, sample-heavy electro-pop gem from the duo.
Shy Glow is out 6/16 on Waaga Records

Neon Noir EP Waaga Records June 3, 2014 We are the living sum of our experiences. Sacramento’s DLRN boldly adorns their collected existence like a mod boutique print woven from the portraits of Kehinde Wiley and the sage words of Kurt Vonnegut and Hunter Thompson; the fabric stressed by the sub-sonic producer’s lounge of Low End Theory. Comprised of Sean LaMarr on vocals and Jon Reyes behind the boards, DLRN could be an acronym for Dumb Luck Right Now - for now. Every passing day is an opportunity to improve upon an inventor's luck. Much like Wiley made a Renaissance from urban life, DLRN are contemporary visionaries balancing cinematic production with the existential crisis of fulfilling a hero’s quest. Soul seekers on the outside of anomic scenes, DLRN envision more for hip hop and strive to guide contemporaries towards a new breaking day.

Steve Sobs - Ugh
New Track: Steve Sobs(@phantompowers) - Ugh. Out via @Waagarecords
“Ugh” is a really neatly and tightly pulled together ‘bedroom pop’ by Brooklyn’s Eric Littmann, previously Phantom Powers who now goes by the playful celebrity-pun (?) moniker Steve Sobs. A minimalistic folksy groove lays the basis for “Ugh” that irresistibly loops its way on underneath Littmann’s deep, half-sung-half-spoken vocals without ever losing its footing. It’s got that certain…

Power Animal
Squealer will never complain of being sick again. Philadelphia's Keith Hampson, the driving force behind Power Animal, spent ten months in and out of hospital and, although too fatigued to play his instruments, he still managed to piece together the songs for his latest EP, Exorcism, which came out on Tuesday.
In spring 2009 Hampson re-worked years of bedroom recordings with the help of his brother and four close friends to make the excellent People Songs, released last year on Waaga Records. Full of strings, synths, bells, horns, samples and two drummers, the sessions produced an album of experimental rock/folk reminiscent of, to name but a few, Efterklang, Do Make Say Think, Anathallo, Broken Social Scene and Akron/Family. The songs of Exorcism, however, represent an enforced departure from this initial format, largely due to being arranged mostly through Hampson's collection of thrift store cassettes and SP-404 sampler whilst recovering in bed. While still carrying the same percussive energy, imaginative songwriting and touching lyricism that make it recognisable and just as enjoyable as his previous output, the songs are swathed in washes of tweaked or reversed samples and electronic production values that prove Hampson's talent knows few bounds, be it medium, circumstance or sickness.
Despite being billed as an EP, Exorcism actually carries 11 tracks (six originals, five remixes) and is out now through Crash Symbols and Hampson's own label/charitable organisation Human Kindness Overflowing. As such it's available on a "name your price" basis here, but bear in mind that for every $2 paid, $1.50 will provide three meals for those in need through Philabundance and the other 50 cents goes toward future funding of charitable projects through HKO. If we really needed another reason to get involved, that would be it.

Larry Gus comes to us via Greece then via Waaga Records and finally onto our internet machines. And it's a good thing, cause he's just released a completely free album entitled 24 Beats. And it is just that, 24 beats. A beat tape consisting of 24 tracks made to make you move. These homemade beats are as eccentric and hip-hop influenced as you could hope for. It's a quick listen at just under a half an hour, but it's an enjoyable one. Click on the image to download the whole shebang.

Waaga records is sharing Larry Gus' 24 Beats for free on their facebook page for the almost-free cost of one like (yeah, I hate it too).  Apparently, he worked on them back in July and now he's finally releasing them to the public.  Click this link to download away.  It's, unsurprisingly, a 24-track album with 26 tracks.  It's a rather innocuous and safe collection of tracks but there's definitely some great tunes (e.g. The Written Word, Grave Eyes, Giardini Pubblici, Bedroom Adventures).
Check out one of the highlights, "Indro Montanelli" above.

Oh yay a new cassette from everyone's favorite summer dream pop master Teen Daze is being released on Waaga Records.  Not that I don't have some special love for cassettes, I only wish that TD would put some tunes on wax.  But yes, Yay cassette!
A Silent Planet cassette (and the continually archaic compact disc) are available to pre-order through Lefse right now here.
Also apparently pre-orders will recieve a special surprise.

Blithe Field - Crushing
Distorted in transcription, imploded upon itself in translation of self, quietly song speaks. We must lean in to hear its whisper, reserved in its repetitious reminisce. You may remember Blithe Field from previous posts. Blithe Field is the music of Ohio local Spencer Radcliffe whose LP will be released on June 28th via Waaga Records.
How about now World, do you see me now, World? I am you. I am mute. I am action entreating with attention. Do you notice me in your nooks. I carve images in your coveted. I relief the roots of your trees until the branches fall from their contrived upkeep. I am your relief, World. When I am on your ground, my sap soaks your earth. When I am beneath your ground, I am not hiding. When I am on your ground, I carve caves into your earth, so that Mother, Sister, Friend, see me. Do you see me too, World?

"Crushing" - Blithe Field
I've been away recently. I apologize. Between this record I've been working on and my recent oral surgery, I haven't been listening to much music. Anyways, I caught Blithe Field's set not too long ago as part of ATHID's really rad online concert showcase, Five Bands, Five Cities, One Show and fell in love. "Crushing" is the 19-year-old's first single from his upcoming Waaga Records release Two Hearted. You can head over [here] and pre-order the CD for yourself. Also, go peep the kickstarter and help the kid get Two Hearted to vinyl. [link]
