This summer I read a lot of Tom/Draco fanfiction. I now consider them the best HP pair. Help T~T. I'm too obsessed with them.

At the core of the Breton conflict, epitomized by the custody battle over Arthur, was a relatively straightforward political issue: the extent to which Brittany would be permitted to exercise local autonomy within the Angevin Empire. William of Newburgh adds an element of romance to his retelling of events in 1196, much as he had done in his account of Arthur’s christening. William’s 1196 portrayal suggests that the Bretons viewed the contest as a struggle for Arthur’s soul. The fulfillment of the Breton Hope was at stake. William writes that the Bretons ‘puerulum sibi Arturum sub magno hujus nominis omine nutriebant’ (were raising the little boy Arthur for themselves under the great omen of his name) and that the magnates of Brittany would not hand him over more on account of a certain suspicion than on account of due caution. Again William scorns Arthur and the Britons.

John’s was not a smooth succession to the throne following Richard’s early death (6 April 1199), and his supporters undertook to discredit Arthur with even greater vigor. They attacked the duke of Brittany’s character and judgment and questioned his ‘Englishness’...

...In England the response was varied. On behalf of John stood the celebrated knight and earl of Pembroke William Marshal (c.1147–1219). In the Histoire de Guillaume le Maréchal (c. 1219–26), there is an exchange between the archbishop and the Marshal over who should be chosen to replace Richard I. The archbishop declared that Arthur had the stronger claim, but the Marshal vehemently opposed elevating Arthur to the throne on that grounds that:

Artur est en felon conseil Si est eschis e orgeillos, E si nos l’atraiom sor nos, Mal e ennui nus voldra querre, Qu’il n’eimme pas cels de la terre.

(Arthur has treacherous advisors about him and he is unapproachable and overbearing. If we call him to be over us, he will seek to do us harm and damage, for he does not like those in our realm.)

The Marshal, who himself held a fiefdom in Longueville, Normandy, characterized Arthur of Brittany as a foreigner unsympathetic to English interests. This instance of reported speech was written roughly twenty years after the event described, but it may nonetheless reflect ideas circulating in 1199.
