How your customers feel about your brand matters. A lot.
Too many times I’ve seen businesses try to create brands based on what they either want people to know about themselves or how they see themselves in the market. The truth is--neither of these components matter.
A famous quote from Maya Angelou sums it up nicely, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”
Branding is an evolution--so it starts with what you’re known as and then evolves over time. How do you currently make people feel? Is there an emotional attachment at all? Loyalty is one of the keys to successful business, and gaining it is key to successful marketing.
The truth is, it’s getting harder and harder to hold on to customer loyalty--and to build it. In a world where one comment over social media can become your worst nightmare, word of mouth travels fast. And, you need to be on your toes. This in turn, makes a marketer’s job more difficult. Where we used to be able to follow the steps of tried and true marketing tactics, now it’s more of a science. And that science is different with every business, and ultimately, every customer.
So where do you start? How do you build a brand that you’re confident resonates with how your customers feel about you, or view you? Well, you start with them. 
Gaining customer feedback can come in many forms:
FOCUS GROUPS
Pull together a focus group. Ask questions, run visuals or text by them, get their stories--the good and the bad. And, find out how they feel about your business versus your competitors. Then snag the opportunity to create a different emotion with them through branding.
SURVEYS
Ask your customers anonymously. They will tell you the truth, in fact, many times they can’t wait to tell you how they feel about your brand and your business. A survey is a great way to get a lot of feedback in a quick amount of time.
RESEARCH
Do your research. Whether you hire a research consultant, dig up credible reports or dig into software that allows you to stay up on the latest trends, it’s worth it and it’s critical.
SALES
Use sales. Sales is in front of the customer every day. We hear more and more about the importance of the alignment between sales and marketing, and, the truth is, it’s invaluable. The best marketing stories can come from a conversation with sales.
TALK TO THEM
The worst thing we can do as marketers is lose touch with our customers. Opt in to customer events, join conversations, introduce yourself, ask questions, you will be surprised what a few simple conversations can do to the power of where you go next in your marketing strategy. And don’t make the fatal mistake of ending the conversation. In today’s world, brand evolve over time--if you lose touch with your customers, they will eventually lose touch with your brand.
In a world that’s saturated with brands and marketing, an emotional connection is invaluable. Do your research, then form your brands story off that research. Determine what emotion you want to drive, how do you want your customers to feel about you? Form your story, and your tactics with this in mind. To be successful you need both, and it starts with your customer.
