Some interesting tidbits about district assignments
Each underboss starts with one district, their "home" district, if you will. You get to decide which additional districts they get, but there's some assignments that some underbosses might like more than the others.
Southdowns - Vito/Cassandra
Pedestrian chatter indicate it had a large, if almost exclusive Italian presence before.
Vito comments on having a "favorite diner in Southdowns."
If you assign Cassandra to Southdowns, some pedestrians are concerned about the Italians and Haitians not getting along. Some pedestrians say they're getting along.
Cassandra says, "Laundry Machines, cigarettes and stereos. Southdowns knows how to turn a dollar out of everyday items. This is real good for us."
In contrast, Burke doesn't have anything interesting to say.
Barclay Mills - Cassandra
The other two comment on Barclay Mills being garbage, but Cassandra has dreams of revitalizing Barclay Mills. Curiously, Emmanuel says that that's because "she never has to go there."
Vito and Alma admit to having little experience with trains and factories.
Tickfaw Harbor - Cassandra/Vito/Burke
Emmanuel comments on the harbor being good for the marijuana business, and Cassandra likes it for general import/export.
Vito and Alma mention that the harbor would make their smuggling operation easier.
Burke and Nicki seems to be more interested in the car rackets.
Downtown - Cassandra
Burke and Vito seem more focused on the money while Cassandra's top priority is power and City Hall.
There's the usual talk about rising crime if Burke or Vito get the district, but with Cassandra, people comment on protests and clashes with the police.
Frisco Fields
All the underbosses seem to like Frisco Fields as a way to spite the wealthy, white residents there, and they don't seem too disappointed if they don't get the district.
Alma is a bit surprised if you give Frisco Fields to Vito.
Nicki dislikes Frisco Fields. It might be because she was in their ER once.
French Ward - Cassandra/Burke
Cassandra and Emmanuel mentions taking care of the sex workers there.
Burke likes vice and the rackets but Nicki seems more exasperated because of him.
Vito has little experience with the rackets there, but he seems to want to run it. Alma has no desire to run the sex rackets.
There's also some common themes in the chatter around each underboss's assignment.
Vito: Increased Italian presence, crime, protection rackets. People also comment on increased Italian cuisine. Memorable quote: "Guess what's at every crime scene lately in Frisco Fields? Marinara."
Burke: Increased Irish presence, moonshine, robberies.
Cassandra: Increased Haitian and black presence. The commentary is usually just racist remarks, but black pedestrians comment on increased black businesses and diversity.

thinking about modern au mafia trilogy & the characters having social media
nicki has a rainbow flag emoji next to her twitter username
donovan on the other hand has an american flag (in his bio rather than username probably)
alma’s twitter bio is just the words “cuban, mean as fuck”
henry’s is just the words “what are you, a cop?” and he basically only uses it for like. media stuff & keeping up with a handful of friends.  all his shit is on private
tommy angelo’s bio is something corny but cute about loving his wife & kids
roxy laveau mostly uses her socials for activism stuff, has links to resources & things to donate to in her bio.  very careful about personal privacy.
all of cassandra’s social media contain no personal information and, aside from having general interests in common (vodou related stuff being the obvious), are completely untraceable to her irl.  emmanuel is the only one who knows about them.  she totally knows and stalks everybody else’s profiles though
vito has a public account that his family can see where he mostly just posts his own photography, cooking, and the occasional sketch along with some baseball stuff.  also has a private account that joe & henry follow that’s mostly just a spam account but he also uses it to look up lgbtq stuff.  never interacts with any of the posts though because he’s nervous.
joe’s account is a mix of memes, photos of like palm trees and neon lights and shit, and the occasional surprise picture of tits.
burke is constantly fighting with people on facebook.  his bio says “pointe verdun’s favorite son”

Entry 375
Portentia was satisfied to see that the prisoner was still here, despite the lack of locks.  Papak had assured that he’d devour the poor man if an escape was attempted.  Some of the younger vampires as well as a couple older ones went blood drunk when they fed, so I stayed behind and watched over them while the others got started with their tour.  I had seen a fair amount of the tour before and would surely visit again many times over the years to come.
Time could seem to pass incredibly quickly for me these days.  As I watched over the vampires, I reminisced about the past years as Dani grew, since I wanted pleasant thoughts for company after seeing the vampires overact their feeding.  Papak had bit one of Portentia’s arms off to try shocking my daughter.  I barely had touched upon Dani’s tenth birthday when Vito and Ariadne popped in to visit.
“James, you’re not here to steal our staff, are you?” questioned Vito with a small smile.  “I know perfectly well that they’ll never want you to leave, having met you.”
“Sorry.  Papak is giving my family his part of the tour, so I volunteered to watch over this lot.  They had a bit much of Portentia’s blood.” I explained.
“Ah.  Yes.  I do appreciate your consideration.  Sorry to have left you alone with Papak, but we didn’t realize you’d be here quite so soon.  That was quite the quick flight.” he told me.  “Is Portentia still around?  I thought I smelled her. on the way in here.”
“She’s here.  I hired her for the duration of the visit, so she could help feed everyone.  Feel free to get a snack before stopping to talk.” I told him.
“Is my niece with you?” questioned Ariadne.
I used a spell to mute the area around us, not wanting the other vampires to hear.  “Always.  You know her.  She’s not officially here though, so Portentia and my daughter don’t know.”
She nodded and said, “Vito, would you mind tying them up, so James can join us?  We brought souvenirs from our trip.”
“I’m surprised you don’t just…”  I snapped my fingers and created a small flash of light around them.  “I can’t imagine a reason you’d need to shop.”
“Need, no, but I do like to get out occasionally.” she insisted.
As she spoke, Vito unleashed a spell he made.  From what I saw, I estimated that the vampires here would be trapped for half a week if they didn’t know how to undo the spell.  Vito surely wouldn’t leave them quite that long, but I did appreciate his skill at spellwork.
Smiling, Ariadne said, “Thank you, dear.  Let’s catch up with the others before Papak makes up too much about Vito and Zachary.  They’ll be fighting for weeks if he gets too carried away.”
I followed as they leisurely walked out.
“How’s Raine coming along?” questioned Vito.
 “Still skittish.”
“But how’s her magic?” he questioned.
“She doesn’t consciously use any yet.”
“What?” asked Ariadne, turning around in surprise.  “She could handle all of your shopping with ease if my niece didn’t.  What I do doesn’t hold a candle to what she could do.”
I nodded and said, “I know.  I need to work with her more, but I’ve been waiting for the right time.”
“I’d tell you that there’s no time like the present, but my niece is probably involved.  That girl…” stated Ariadne, shaking her head.
I grinned, catching the momentary smile on Ariadne’s face.  “Keeps life interesting, doesn’t she.”
“That is certainly one way of putting it.  Has she ever made you watch her use that scythe of hers?” questioned Vito with a shudder.
“Too often.  I don’t even get the bad memories anymore.  You do know the scythe’s just for show, don’t you?” I questioned.
Vito frowned and said, “I’ve guessed, but that is still a terrifying weapon.  She could no doubt devour the world with it.”
“She could snuff out a galaxy on a whim if she tossed it into a star, told it to conserve its energy, and left it for a while.”
“She speaks to it?” asked Ariadne, surprised again.
 “You could say that.”
“Aren’t you worried about saying too much?  You obviously know more about that thing than we do at this point.” stated Vito with obvious warning in his voice.
“She’d just kill me again if that were a problem.”
 “Again?” questioned Ariadne.
I shrugged.  “She’s Death.  There’s really no difference to her whether someone is alive or dead.  We might as well have on/off switches.”
Ariadne gently touched my arm and asked “What happened to you on your honeymoon?”
I smiled and patted her head.  “Much.  I can’t tell you a hundredth… well… less than that.”
“You’ve aged, James.” stated Vito with a tone of surprise.  He was staring into my eyes as if he were trying to peer into my soul.
I smiled.  “Just don’t go calling me ‘old man’ yet.  My daughter’s only fifteen.”
“Most people will think you’re still going on twenty.  If I didn’t know Carl, I’d be at a complete loss.  As things are, I’m still very curious.”
“I know you’re patient.  Give me a hundred years from your perspective, and I should be allowed to tell you a great deal more.” I replied.
“How long will that be for you?” he questioned.
Ariadne elbowed him and said, “Be nice.”
“I honestly don’t keep count.  If I knew my age, I’d probably brood about it.” I told him.
He grinned wickedly as he said, “Maybe Aaliyah will let us throw you a party when you pass us.”
Ariadne punched his gut.  “Be nice!”
“Yes-yes.  Always.  I’d invite you.” he assured her.
 She sighed dramatically.
Papak charged down the hall toward us, grabbing me with one hand and scooping up Vito and Ariadne with the other as he flipped around.  We let him carry us to where he left the group.
“Got them!” exclaimed Papak with a grin.  “You’re up, Vito.”
“I see.” stated Vito as he straightened Ariadne’s shirt for her.
“Are you two dating!?” exclaimed Dani with a grin.
Vito raised an eyebrow as he appraised my daughter.
“Dani, this is Ariadne and Vito.” I told her.  Turning to them, I said, “And this is my daughter, Dani.”
“She’s pink!” exclaimed Papak with a big grin as he pointed to Dani.
“Really?” questioned Vito, feigning surprise.  “Are you certain?”
Papak stuck his enormous head up next to his brother and said, “Yes.”
“Well, thank you for informing me.  I would never have figured that one out.”
Dani quickly ducked under his arm, tapped on his cheek, and asked “Are they dating!?  They feel like they’re dating.”
“Do they?” questioned Papak as he eyed Dani.
“Sorry.  She’s exceptionally energetic today.” explained Alma, as she ducked around Papak to grab Dani.
“But Mom…” complained Dani as she was being pulled away.
Ariadne smiled and said, “Yes, Dani.  We’re dating.”
“See!” exclaimed Dani as she bounced on her feet.
“You are… quite interesting, aren’t you.” stated Ariadne, looking at Dani curiously.
“Still doesn’t have Portentia beat.” stated Cosette with a smirk.
Dani frowned and tried to move toward Cosette despite Alma holding her arm.  “You don’t think I’m interesting!?”
Cosette smiled, stepped forward and patted Dani’s arm.  “You’re very interesting, but Ariadne’s an incredible healer.  She was examining your physiology.  You can tell by the soft glow around her.”
“Ooooh.” stated Dani.  She quickly turned to me and exclaimed “Daddy, don’t kill her!”
I sighed, walked over, and hugged her.  “Dani, you know I don’t randomly kill people, even if they give random medical exams.  Besides, Ariadne is Aaliyah’s aunt.”
“Is she really!?” asked Dani as she stared up at me.  “That’s so cool!  No wonder they look similar!  She must know all sorts of things!”
“Let me apologize in advance.  I can’t compete with my niece for knowledge.”
“Does Aaliyah really know that much?” questioned Portentia.  Seeing everyone’s gaze turn to her, she said, “What?  Aaliyah’s a super genius, but she’s… what… thirteen now?”
“Tell me what you think in a couple hundred years.” stated Vito with a smile.
“Did James tell you that Portentia’s here as lunch?” questioned Papak.
 “He mentioned it.”
“Wait.  You think she’ll be around in a couple hundred years?” questioned Portentia.
“I thought you had found out that she doesn’t age.  Interesting medical condition.” I explained.
She nodded and said, “Life’s so strange.  Just a year ago, I thought I’d be wandering the streets alone forever.  Half a year with James, and I’m surrounded by immortals.”
“I’m not!” exclaimed Dani with a grin.  “Immortal that is.  I’m going to grow old, sooo old.  There will be wrinkles and everything!  It’ll be so cool!”
She knew quite well that her species didn’t get age wrinkles, but she became obsessed with them after seeing “through the years” collections Mila had shown her while expanding her knowledge of this planet’s art.
I was still against my daughter aging.  Aging wasn’t even a tricky thing to prevent for Aaliyah, but Death would claim her one day.  Dani would smile and grab my hand just as her heart stopped.  The faded color of her hair was ingrained in my mind.  I had been too young to watch my daughter die, but she had been so very happy in her new world, excited for the next adventure in a younger body.  When she died, I’d be the one smiling as I escorted her to her new world this time, not the one sobbing at her side.  For now, we had time.

Entry 293
Mentally giggling to myself, I considered how best to pounce Alma.  I kept reminding myself I needed to be very careful.  My brain was still fuzzy from the catnip and other plants throughout the yard, but I knew I could be careful.  Hundreds of variations of her surprised expression passed through my mind as I considered some options.
Realizing that something had been approaching me for some time, much more quickly than anyone here could manage, I jumped backward and was startled to see James moving much faster than normal for him.  Had he been holding back all of this time?  Scenarios started playing through my head based off previous observation.  There were far too many times I had seen him struggle against Alma to ever guess that he could do what he was doing, but he was still doing it.
“James!?” exclaimed Alma, staring at him with a wonderfully surprised expression.  He had eventually reached her and lifted her into his arms without slowing down.
I was grateful for the giggles as my addled mind memorized her expression, but part of me was still disappointed that I wasn’t the one to elicit her surprise.  Another part of my mind was running scenarios on who could have surprised her better, but James seemed to be winning more often than not.  There was also a cheering section for him in my mind, happy to see his smiling face while urging him onward.  “See” wasn’t really the right word.  I just knew in the way I occasionally know things, sensing precisely what happened out of sight.  My slowly-cranking, mental gears remembered there was a barrier on that forest that prevented most magic from piercing it.  Accidentally bypassing the barrier seemed wrong, but there were many things wrong with me.
“How?  You’re not even wearing a suit!” exclaimed Alma, staring into his eyes.
“Turns out I don’t need one.” he replied, shrugging slightly as energy lazily moved down into him.
Maybe the energy was rushing?  What if my pacing was seriously thrown off by the catnip?  The idea of purging it from my system became appealing to a very cautious section of my brain, but the boring department was getting locked for now.
“That is completely unfair.” she insisted with a smile that seemed to mean she liked the unfairness.
Still, James was quick to argue “No more unfair than creating a wonderful enchantment only to find that I cannot benefit from it.”
“Touché.  How magnificent you are, my love.” she told him, brushing her fingertips along his hair.
I almost rushed in there to try petting him too, but I resisted the impulse, knowing there was something wrong about it while ignoring the scenarios that attempted to demonstrate what was wrong with it.  No need to be depressing right now.
James had been slowing down since entering the forest, and he came to a stop not long after leaving it, pulling Alma tighter against his chest as he kissed her.  I knew I shouldn’t be staring, but my eyes weren’t on them, so I didn’t need to be embarrassed, right?  I took a peek anyway and something that had been scrambling through the back of my mind reared its ugly head.  My angle was wrong.  My whole position was wrong.  Why was I standing in the air for this long?  My body should have been pulled back by gravity a while ago.  At least, I was fairly certain, gauging by the speed of the others instead of James’ recent speed.
“Go, manslave!  Can I go next!?” exclaimed Emma excitedly.  She had been blatantly staring at them.
I screeched as whatever had been keeping me aloft disappeared.  I wasn’t scared of falling, happy to be approaching the catnip again, but I didn’t like not knowing how I just became freakier.
“Not in front of everyone, James.” whispered Alma, probably trying to be too quiet for anyone to hear.
 I silently apologized to her.
Turning to face Emma, she then said, “No.  We’re not in that sort of relationship.”
“Aww… but sharing is caring where James is involved.” claimed Emma with a big grin.  Then she looked to me and asked “What happened to you?”
“I-I…” I started, considering how to explain something I didn’t understand.  I shrugged and stretched out to sniff the catnip more.
“She was flying.” asserted Alma in a confused tone.
“What!?  That’s amazing!” insisted Emma, still grinning as she watched me.
“When am I going to discover some awesome latent talent?” complained Brandon.
“Probably right after I discover mine.” teased Brenna, pretending to pout.
Sighing, Cosette said, “Just be glad that any such abilities won’t take a thousand years to develop.  Mine will.”
“Emma, might you regress the catnip for now?” suggested Alma.  “I think Raine’s had enough.”
Knowing words wouldn’t dissuade the sad course, I changed into my kitty form after a quick leap toward Alma.
Emma pouted as she caused the plants to regress to seeds.  “I like drugged-out Raine.  She’s so cuddly!” she insisted.
“I… see.” stated Alma, looking down at me as I rubbed up against her legs.
“Nooo!  She can’t like you better!” whined Emma.
I told Emma a thousand times that I didn’t like Alma better than her.  I loved my friends.  My addled brain suggested that I had only contradicted Emma in my mental scenarios, but I told it that would be silly.
“Don’t worry.  I’m sure she likes me best.” teased Cosette, slipping from her clothes as she transformed into a black panther.  “Ugh.  That will take some adjustment.”
“What will?” questioned James.  “Other than watching a panther talking.”
“Removing the suit does funny things to my head, save for the laugh of humor in them.” she explained, rubbing her head with her paw.
“Ah.  I know what you mean.” replied Alma with a nod.  “That is an odd sensation with everything suddenly seeming slower.”
The catnip effect was already gone, devoured by my body too quickly without a constant source of happiness.  I created a mental room for it to continue in memory with the wonderfulness that was today, and promised that I’d revisit it again eventually.
“I’m never taking mine off.  You guys can just clean me with magic if I start to stink.” proclaimed Brandon as he crossed his arms.
“So forget about making a suit that can expand with you?” teased James.
“What!?  NO!   That’d be incredible!” exclaimed Brandon, seeming to try picturing what he could do.  He probably thought of himself as fifty feet tall and as fast as James in his mind.
“Even with clever engineering, there would have to be considerably more material involved without a reduction of thickness.  I doubt even Jarod can make the suits that much more streamlined, though I’m certain he’ll be able to reduce the bulk some.” stated Alma as she considered how to accomplish the task.
“Actually, I was going to adjust my enchantment to create a metamorphic suit.” explained James with a small smile.
“What?  James, magic such as you’d need doesn’t exist.” she insisted.
“Neither did an enchantment such as I created.” he teased, openly grinning at her.
“Fair point, but I’ve seen the results of attempting to alter form with magic.  The results aren’t pleasant.” she told him matter-of-factly.
“I beg to differ, but Cosette makes quite a nice panther.” he argued, still smiling.
Cosette gave him a toothy grin, which appeared more ferocious than friendly with her panther teeth.
Alma frowned at him and said, “That is an entirely different case.  I do realize that certain types of creatures can alter their forms, but you’re talking about causing such an effect with residual energy.  We simply don’t know enough about it to manage such a feat.”
I stopped rubbing against her legs, feeling she didn’t deserve kitty rubs when she frowned at James.
“I realize the Slayers are thought to be experts on magic, but I have access to other, much older experts.” stated James.  He looked completely confident in his plan, and he was watching the others, save for Cosette, go back to their exercises instead of at his fiancée.
“The vampires…” she whispered.  “We long have wondered how they managed to create Poenari Island, but you surely aren’t suggesting they’d teach you on a whim.”  Her musings quickly turned to recounting how the Slayers and vampires had bickered for countless years.
James eventually cut her off, holding up his hand and saying, ““Hold on.  I thought you said the Slayers knew about the spell that create the island.”
“We knew of it, not specifically how the spell was performed.  The one I would be able to discuss with you is of an entirely different nature.” she replied.
“Oh.  Well, Vito already gave me an explanation on turning lead to gold, so I do believe he’ll gladly assist me in other endeavors if I ask.” he nonchalantly told her.
She looked at him in clear disbelief before saying, “Really?  James, the potential for such spells is virtually limitless!  I urge you to fly there this night if you really think he’ll show you.”
“I don’t really need to fly anywhere to learn.” he told her, seeming amused.
“I… suppose not.  Still, you should learn all you can from them.” she insisted.
“I won’t be able to show you yet.  Sorry, but I made a promise in that regard.” he replied regretfully.
She frowned again as she said, “I see.”
Team anti-frown wanted me to tickle her ankles, but I doubted that would work even if I was still catnip-dosed.  She’d probably get all complain-y instead of laughing, ruining everything.
James took her cheek in his hand as he gazed into her eyes.  The moment stretched on and on in my mind before he said, “Try not to worry so much.  I assure you things will work out.”
If he knew how many romance novels he had just inspired in my head with that look, he’d probably blush, but I wasn’t going to write them or admit to them.
The dubious expression on Alma’s face was obviously a facade with how her whole body seemed to melt against him.  She should just kiss him again already, but she didn’t.
Mila, who had been walking toward us for some time now, interrupted the moment, asking “Master, might I engage Portentia in a fight more on her level?”  Instead of her typical maid outfit, she was now wearing a spandex outfit fit for exercise.  How could she miss how terrible her timing was?
I knew that Portentia was mopping the floor with the others, but the others were simply too slow in comparison.
James glanced at her and nodded.
“Surely you can fight in something less revealing.” stated Alma.  “Besides, even you won’t keep up with her in that suit.”
“Lady Pendreigh, everyone here is quite well aware that I am not you, despite how similar we look.  Given such admirable proportions, should I be so reluctant about having them admired?  I think not.  Furthermore, the master granted me enchantments that might well surpass the suits, so I feel plenty confident in this endeavor.” replied Mila in a matter-of-fact tone that mirrored what Alma had used earlier.
Alma didn’t look happy, but she sighed and didn’t argue any further.  Mila rushed into a fight with Portentia, stealing her attention from the others.  Against Mila, Portentia didn’t stand a chance.  Despite excelling with her staff-spear-thing, Portentia hadn’t devoted herself to learning unarmed combat yet.  Mila made her look like a clumsy oaf, clearly maneuvering Portentia from one bad position to another.  Portentia’s grace was still beautiful to witness, turning falls into acrobatic backsteps that were dance-like in execution.
“I’m surprised Portentia hasn’t pulled out her staff yet.  She really has learned restraint and might well study unarmed combat with greater enthusiasm after this.  She’ll become even more of a nightmare to criminals in this city.” commented Alma, her violet eyes observing every step.
“I’m a little worried that there isn’t enough energy back here to keep things going at this rate.  Would you mind helping things along?” suggested James.
In response, Alma glowed, sending a flood of energy throughout the yard.  She was always beautiful, seeming a bit surreal in her flawless appearance, but the glow made her even spectacular.  Part of me considered what I would look like if I tried that, but the energy within me consumed light, even as it dragged those sparkling bits of energy with it into this world.  There was no hiding the monster.
“Shouldn’t you two practice some as well?” she asked, looking down at Cosette and me.  “Even Brandon and Brenna are putting up a fair fight against Emma.”
Brenna had started using magic as well as hand-to-hand fighting, but Emma easily responded with her own.
“Fiiiine.” replied Cosette before sauntering back to her suit.
I stretched as I looked up at them, considering whether or not I should respond.  Team anti-frown was still miffed at Alma for being all frowny at James, so no conclusion was reached.  I just curled back up to drift through my thoughts.
“Brandon has to feel restrained without being able to change size.” suggested James, still watching our sparring friends.
“I do look forward to seeing how you’ll fix the problem.” replied Alma.  Then she surprised me by leaning down and smiling softly as she petted me.  “I do understand that you avoid fighting, but look at them.  They’re having fun.  Even Mila is out playing today.  James and I will gladly be your partners.”
I opened an eye enough for her to know I was looking.  Scenarios were already manifesting to gauge action and reaction between James, Alma, and me.  Eventually isolating one, I slipped from her hand and transformed, gently placing James on the ground and my knee on his chest.  Looking human again in my normal clothes, I stated “I-I win.”
Alma laughed and said, “I will never grow accustomed to that, but let’s try things a bit slower.”
“Just think of this as a game.  You’re limited by rules and attempting to outmaneuver us without moving faster than us.” suggested James.  “Everyone knows you love a good game.”
He was certainly correct about my love of games, but real life was different.  People could get hurt, and I’d be the one accidentally hurting them.  Of course, not giving in to their request might hurt them in a different way.  I nodded and backed off from him.
I had patience, and small amounts of movement didn’t really distract me from my thoughts.  Waiting for a punch to land in my waiting fist wasn’t.  After a while, I realized that I was actually losing here.  I didn’t make counterattacks, and some of the hits would count at points if we were using James’ system.  Sure, they couldn’t hurt me if they punched with enough force that’d make most people explode, but I needed to react better or I’d be throwing the game.  They’d know if I did.  I adjusted and improved, never letting one of their tricks work twice, despite actually falling for a few in my mental distraction.  As I considered this game more carefully, the ever-exploding scenarios in my head became more focused on winning.  Even with two opponents and very, very limited speed, I could always be in the right position with accurate enough prediction.  Game won.
Before we reached the most likely outcome, Alma backed off, saying, “Though I’m grateful you don’t fly when you fight, I must ask… Were you aware that you can fly?”
I shook my head.  “N-No.”  The thought was still freaky to me.  I hadn’t meant to be flying.  Even if I could repeat it, I doubted I should.  People don’t fly.  Monsters might.  This one apparently did.  Even as I considered superheroes, I knew that no one would see me and think they were being saved.
“I’d like to see you practice if you don’t mind.” suggested Alma.
I shook her head negatively, not wanting to make myself even freakier.
“Why not?” Alma asked with a sigh.
“I… They…  N-no.  P-please, no.” I told her.  Scenarios had already formed to consider other freaky powers I might exhibit in an attempt to regain flight.  People could die.  How many people could I oops away?  Hundreds?  Thousands?  The city?  Alma could supposedly destroy a city, and she was so slow…  What would happen if I made a big oops?  Such a possibility couldn’t be allowed.
“We all have our own issues, but you’re doing well, Raine.  I’m still quite thankful to have you here.” stated James encouragingly.  He gently patted my shoulder.
I smiled at him and opened that glorious room in my mind, adding another moment to my collection of treasured James memories.  At Best Friend For Hire, even monsters could be welcomed if they behaved.
