Devlog: 9th May, '24

Aka, the first devlog! Yippee! Excitement!

Dragonspike is an idea that I've been rotating in my head for a long time. Originally, it began as a traditional novel that I slid towards writeblr for but felt that it was somewhat limited in the scope of what I wanted to do. I put it on the shelf for a bit before deciding to look at it again and found that I was just as enamoured with the idea as I was at its conception. However, instead of a novel, I instead decided to make it a visual novel.

I had a very clear idea of the world and the tropes I wanted to pull from and, using those, I started planning it in Obsidian and made an outline of the initial plot but didn't even touch Ren'Py for the first bit of time. As of yesterday, I had a few thousand words of planning in place and then I finally touched the coding side...

I knew before I got into anything that I wanted to set up the character customisation first because it would a) give me an idea of how to work with imagemaps and b) be the first step to figuring out how to use sideimages for when the player talks. I decided to go for a fullbody rather than a cropped version which I may actually change in the future.

Right now, I have a very rudimentary character creation screen with some pretty basic art for it.

I based it off of lunalucid's template on itch.io and woof, I struggled so much. At one point, I stared between my version and the template and couldn't figure out where I'd gone wrong. The answer was that I missed about eight commas. This is why you don't code at 3am, kids. But theoretically it all works! Theoretically. I've had a few friends give it a test and they haven't said anything about it breaking so I think that bodes well.

With this done, I think I can comfortably start figuring out how I want the UI to be laid out. I'll possibly also work on writing a little bit more of the prologue if I still have energy once my Monster wears off and after running MotW. I think I'll probably crash pretty hard and end up fighting the urge to crack another can open.

saw a post once abt how spelling specifically can be smthin that doesnt come naturally to people. I had never thought of that before but if it’s true it makes me feel better bc im a good writer but a pretty shit speller

if you think about it words invented for like grammatical purposes as opposed to describing a real physical thing are kind of weird like. how do you explain the concept of "therefore" to a baby

i'm studying with notes that aren't mine and tell me why the person uses parentheses ( like this ) i genuinely think there's something wrong with them

#and like i say: brf slt #and they use them way more than the average person too i have to erase the extra space every single time #i know i can't complain because well if i wanted notes to be written the way i want i should have just gone to class and the content #is there so like it's fine. but OH MY GOD #people literally can't write? i know it's hard i know about dyslexia and everything i know it's elitist to expect everyone to be able to #write perfectly but it's actually astounding how bad people are at this am i the only one who can write without making three mistakes #in one sentence anymore society...it's actual sentences not notes they took quickly in the moment like this is them making an effort #i think my biggest pet peeve is the way people use commas. the syntax in general is abysmal it's criminal. and that's coming from me the #person who writes like this on social media #i read a lot as a kid and i've always been very good at like writing without making any mistakes whether it was conjugation grammar or #spelling i don't know why but it always came naturally to me and so i just genuinely do not understand how people can make so many mistakes #that their sentences don't make sense anymore it doesn't compute for me. like i know the objective reasons but it's just not something i'm #capable of understanding😭#i think one of the reasons why i could always write well is i see every word i think/say/hear in my head like visually without me doing #anything like automatically since forever? not forever i don't know what it was like before i could read but it's not like anyone #remembers what not reading is like once they know how to read. but yeah when i tell people this they're always like no this is not a thing #for me and i'm like okay...#but anyway. i don't comment on people's writing mistakes unless it's my sister because it's like rude and again i know it's shitty to be #like you can't write are you stupid because there's a lot of reasons but it's also yk the way we communicate so it's nice to actually #understand what the other person is saying #this doesn't apply to the way i write in the tags of my posts and elsewhere. btw. 😁#doesn't even apply to english in general actually. tbh. but i type the exact same way in french so it's not a language thing #it's a me thing

venba came out today... wait for a sale honestly 😔😔 all the buzz has made it seem like a cool cooking game where u learn about indian cooking and culture, and yeah theres a teensy bit of that but... its VERY short, like under an hour and it costs €12 rn, will cost €15 full price. idk... the story itself is nice but its basically a visual novel thats badly written in places and the cooking segments are just "drag this thing to the pot" or "rotate the joystick a bunch of times". VERY shallow, and the storys nothing special either. the only thing going for it is the art and some of the music but again, not worth the price at all imo

#i took a gamble on it bc the early reviews were good... regret. like this is a story everyones experienced before 😩#but it wouldve been great at a lower price point bc that wouldve given ppl a good expectation of length #price shouldnt equal length ofc but €12 for a shallow visual novel lying about being a cooking game? yeah no #plus it feels kind of itchio at times? as in theres spelling nd grammar errors which just point to a lack of proofreading #nd when i say the storys nothing special... like. its sweet. perfect for a lil 1 hour indie that youd play for free on itch nd then tip €1

What would make you REFUSE to read a fanfic no matter how good it seemed?

The lack of paragraph spacing. I'm talkin a wall of text. Coupled with a poor writing style (inconsistent, lack of, or nonexistent rules for referencing dialogue I've seen most often that just have me confused) has me running for the hills.

#ask for moi #what i mean here is ill give all fics a shot. even if there's some things i don't like ill skim and skip around #but after that point it's either hard to read from a visual standpoint #or that the writing itself is dancing around the plot or character progression/lack of it or is just poor to read #like actual bad writing/grammar etc. or something like gratuitous torture with no means of purpose besides existing or a future escape

LMAO SO FOR FUN FACTS:

Paroxysm is genuinely something I can say was created purely on accident because I got very attached to the new edgy oc (Shin) and decided that they Must have some depth even tho I originally wanted them to be flat and just for funsies. To explain: Shin originally was this mass of creatures who decided to kill and possess some rando's (rando being Daki) body while pretending to Be them etc etc then shenanigans ensure. But yeah I was like. "Ok but who is the guys he's possessing tho. Also does this dude have any friends who'd notice this change– oH ALSO W–[FALLS FACE FIRST INTO INTENSE HYPERFOCUS]

▪︎Also extra note: Dai had been created during this original concept phase as well! I wanted Daki (the guy Shin is possessing currently) to have like. Actual Friends who'd notice that Somethings Different in him and would help him if possible and moments later Dai was born

And speaking of Dai, this reminds me that in early development (saying this like Paroxysm isn't still a baby) he was originally meant to be... 21 years old? but after getting more into his life accomplishments and all that I came to the conclusion of: "If this guy were in fact 21 yrs old, I think the sheer amount of stress he's under would perhaps send him into an early grave"– and basically he's 23 yrs old now (but also I do not think that man has ever gotten more than 5-6hrs of sleep in one sitting. Good lird)

On the flip side tho, his friend Daki is currently in the middle of taking a break year between high school and college since he's graduated, and I think he gets enough sleep/relaxation time for the both of them (/hj because very soon Daki gets exposed to The Horrors and is put thru the metaphorical blender)

▪︎Dai's name came from when I was trying to say ShinDaki (<- the current duo name for Shin and Daki's dynamic) While. Extremely Tired and ended up saying "ShinDai" on accident LMAO, anyways it stuck with me as we can see

▪︎fun thing that I like to sprinkle into their dynamic occasionally is that Daki admires Dai SO much, but subconsciously has this bad habit of comparing themself to him Constantly (obviously not the healthiest of habits lol) and wants to be someone that Dai can be proud of

Also Daki has been procrastinating confessing His Feelings™ for Dai for at least years and at this point he's made peace with going to the grave with them as well (Hes gets nervous making larger life decisions, and will normally get someone else to support him during smth like this. And since this is something he must do alone (<- without Dai's support) he has decided to Not)

Dai has Feelings for Daki as well lol, but he's less self aware when it comes to these things and it took dating a random girl that he works with to Really register it LMAO (while they were dating he was like. Huh. Hey so why can't I stop thinking about my friend. [Realizes] OH. OHHHHHHH. FUCK.) Anyways he ended up telling her this (bc he felt guilty and thought she should know) and soon after they broke up unfortunately, on good terms btw!!! They're still really close friends still but it was... sooo fucking awkward during the week post breakup. But in true Dai fashion he has decoded to repress his feelings for Daki for Later™ him to address

Anyways I love my sillies, but for the not so fun facts!!!:

▪︎The reason why Dai is Like That (overachiever/overworker/doesn't know how to take care of himself etc etc) is because he's been trying to live up to the impossible standard his parents have set for him, and the standards he's set for himself mentally as a result of this. I feel that he envies Daki's ability to like... actually relax without the feeling of crawling out of his skin bc of restlessness (tfw you have strict parents who don't know how to convey positive emotions at children and give them insane mental illnesses instead)

Also Daiki be like. "Ohh I admire your ability to live a life that is seemingly the exact opposite of my own. I wish I were more like you" bc I dunno love wins

▪︎In the Egregore AU (<- Basically the reverse version of Paroxysm where Dai gets possessed instead of Daki) Dai is.. Alot more paranoid(?) compared to his original counterpart. And smth smth I think he has OCD in Egregore now? So basically. The Curse thats possessing him can be summed up as "horrific intrusive thoughts that are also Very Sentient/Alive" and I dunno. I was looking at how someone like him might yknow. Cope with this sort of thing and kept realizing that it was very simular to how I've seen people deal/sooth themselves during bad bouts of OCD. Anyways in Paroxysm Daki's body is taken away from him and in Egregore its Dai's mind that's turned against him. They are 🤝🤝🤝🤝 while also crying LOL

▪︎There was a version of Paroxysm where Daki... perma died at The Start of the story, and it was abt Dai solving and avenging his murder and Shin being an ass about it. It's changed since then so instead of dying he gets rreeaallllll close to it lol

(And since this was The Original Concept of Paroxysm, the meaning of Daki's name reflects that still even tho things have changed Alot since then. Anyways Daki meant "abandon, throw away, discard" etc etc however I recently found a different (kanji) spelling of Daki that can mean princess which is SO funny to me)

▪︎ONE MORE SINCE I AM SLEEPY AND I THINK THIS IS GETTING A TAD LONG.

Shin has The Worst abandonment issues known to man and science. It's understandable since the One person he had really trusted and felt a really connection with basically sealed him into a box where his energy bounced and reflected off of itself for.. almost? 20 years basically, and for the most part he doesn't know Why this happened to him (the process of That fucked up/twisted his memories, so he genuinely cannot rely on whatever goes on his brain memory wise) so he's done alot of stewing in anger/grief/intense confusion during that time. I do not think he would begin to recognize what he was "before."

In short Shin has decided to take out all of his Very pent up Issues on Daki, which obvs doesn't end well for anyone involved unfortunately
