Today’s Dealer Series; Antique/Vintage Lamps! There’s so many varieties of vintage lamps on the market these days, how can one determine if a vintage lamp is a quality piece? ~ First one would look at the quality of the piece to determine there are no cracks or damage. What types of materials are vintage lamps made from? ~Metal, glass, ceramic, wood, & acrylic. Using ceramic as an example, what would one look for to determine quality? ~First, check to see if there’s a designer signature. Where on the lamp would one find a signature? ~Underneath the base or on metal/glass lampshades, in a non-obvious place, where it does not take away from the beauty of the lamp design. What are some other ways to check age & quality? ~Check to see if the wiring and plugs are intact. Then check the on/off mechanism to see it’s in working order and try plugging the lamp in and check if it works. Please note: if you like the style of the lamp, it’s not that important if it doesn’t work. You can easily repair or replace lamp cords. switches, and plugs yourself or have them repaired professionally. ~ You can use some creativity and repurpose antique & vintage items like oil lamps, ginger jars, stoneware jugs, old tin advertising cans, & even gas/oils (for a man cave!) to turn into lamps too! How do you clean vintage lamps bases? ~In general, you can use warm water with a little mild dish soap and a soft cloth.
