RAINBOW MOUNTAIN PERÚ
Rainbow Mountain Peru Full Day, Ausangate (6398m/20991f) is considered to be one of the most beautiful snow-capped mountains of the Andes of Cusco. The region around the mountain offers impressive scenery of mountains, glaciers, lagoons and streams. This is one of the most beautiful choices to visit the rainbow land in Ausangate. Besides, it is a different experience because we are going to walking over 4500 msnm. During the trip, we will see the most famous mountain of Cusco and Peru (Ausangate, and beautiful landscapes). This tour combines a bit of culture, tradition, and amazing flora and fauna offered by the Andes of Peru and it is a perfect place to find peace and a sense of Andean life.
TRIP OVERVIEW
The Rainbow Mountain – Ausangate – Peru, also known as Vinicunca, are stunning and can be seen on the spectacular Ausangate Trek. Ausangate mountain itself is considered a holy mountain (or mountain spirit) by local Peruvians and is the deity of Cusco. Since pre-Inca times the mountain has been a place of worship and offerings and this tradition continues today.
Most trips that allow you to see the Rainbow Mountains require a trek of at least 6 days. That has changed with this brand new itinerary. We have designed this hike so that it can be done as a day trip!
On this trek you will see quaint villages, beautiful adobe style houses, herds of llamas and alpacas and you will have magnificent views of the Ausangate Glacier (6,385 m / 20,945 ft), the highest mountain in the Cusco region.
With uninterrupted beauty and solitude, this is a spectacular trip for trekkers who love a true outdoor adventure. By booking the Ausangate Trek with Cusco Journeys  you are choosing the best. Don’t believe us? Check out our reviews on Tripadvisor.
TRIP ITINERARY DAY 1: CUSCO – QUESIUNO – RAINBOW MOUNTAIN – QUESIUNO –CUSCO
We will pick you up in Cusco at 4:00AM from whichever hotel you are staying at within Cusco. It is about a 3½ hour drive in our private van during which we will pass through a few traditional villages and see some amazing views of the Andes. When we reach the trailhead for this hike, we will stop and enjoy a lovely breakfast freshly prepared by our trekking chef. After breakfast and packing some snacks to munch on en route, we will begin the hike from Quesiuno (4,326 m / 14,189 ft) ft elevation. From here it will be a 3 hour uphill hike to reach the famous Rainbow Mountains. Along the way you will enjoy amazing views of the Andes, glacial peaks, red mountains, rocky hills, and traditional llamas and alpacas grazing along the valley. As you reach the summit of the mountain you will be able to spot some Andean wildlife. Vicuñas are considered to be the Andean camel and this is the only place in Cusco where you will see them in the wild. Vicuñas are in the same family as llamas, though are much smaller and they have the most expensive wool in the world.
Once we arrive at the top of Rainbow Mountain, you will have enough time to take in the views and the magesty of this area. All of the mountains that surround this area are red and there are amazing views of the valleys and Ausangate Glacier Peak right in front of you. Ausangate is the tallest mountain of the Cusco region (just under 21,000 ft elevation) and is part of the Cordillera Vilcanota Range. While taking in these magnificent views our staff will bring you some hot drinks while sharing information with you about the composition of these incredible mountains and how they became striated in the rainbows of colors you are seeing. After taking a few amazing pictures and soaking in the views (perhaps we will even see a few condors floating on the air currents) we will begin our descent with a 2 hour downhill hike. We will then meet up with our trekking chef and enjoy a delicious, freshly prepared hot lunch. After lunch you can visit some of the local family’s homes where you can see the lifestyle of these people who still practice the ancient traditions of the Inkas. Here they speak Quechua, practicing their earth-based religion, and the agriculture – honoring the mountain spirits and sun to insure that their crops and herds fourish – as well as weaving the textiles that you will find in the museums all around Peru. Finally after our interactions with the locals, we will start our return trip back to Quesiuno (4,326 m / 14,189 ft) village to catch our private van back to Cusco, arriving around 6 PM, where we will drop you off at your hotel.
