As I reread Harry Potter (said the spider to the fly) I am noticing, on this reread, characters onto whom I projected more depth than the text actually suggests. The two principal examples are Peter Pettigrew and Percy Weasley.
Both examples are evoked by Rowling's statement, "I loathe a traitor."
I'm going to focus on Percy right now, because I started Goblet of Fire, and Goblet of Fire develops Fred and George Weasley in a new direction.
Early in Goblet we learn that Fred and George are inventors, not just chaos-making jokesters. They gamble all of their savings on the Quidditch World Cup--- and win by an insane risk of intuition. We see a serious edge to the Weasley twins--- not to mention the quite serious clashes with their mother.
I thought, before book seven came out, that we would see a similar amount of depth with Percy Weasley.
Well, we do see depths to Percy in Goblet of Fire. They're just not flattering depths. To quote Elphaba, we see how Percy would "grovel in submission / to feed his own ambition."
I guess I mean, I thought Rowling would reveal heroic depths to Percy. A look into the guy's head, even--- more than just "ambition bad; man this guy is a suck-up." I mean, why should Percy be two-dimensional when the other school-aged Weasley siblings are developed well?
Is it really a crime to be the one introvert in a family of boisterous jocks?
I think a lot of fanfiction writers saw sympathetic depths in Percy. He's a nerd; we're all nerds. Rereading the books, now that I know that this extra depth is not forthcoming, Percy is just... flat. Hmm.

A great detail in Goblet of Fire is that Rowling shows--- Lucius Malfoy may buy his way anywhere, Cornelius Fudge may bumble along, but when chaos breaks out--- it's Arthur Weasley that people trust.
I just really love this detail.

What if the significance of Tom Riddle’s phoenix feather wand was this—he was always destined to start a big social change, where society would be reborn like the Phoenix. Voldemort chose the destiny of an immortal despot.
but thanks to the actions of Harry Potter (whose wand and destiny is connected to his), Voldemort’s resurrection, rule, and defeat end up leading to progressive reforms in Wizarding England. So the legacy of the phoenix feather wand still holds true.
