Noodle roundup part 1 since, frankly, there are a LOT more snakes in my family now than there was the last time I was active on tumblr. We'll see how many posts it takes me to get through them all.

do you have any thoughts on beauty rat snakes? they're one of my favorite species!
I just adore beauty ratsnakes! They're so spunky and gorgeous!
Beauty ratsnakes, Orthriophis taeniura, are, as their name would imply, some of the most downright beautiful snakes on the planet! I just love them. There are quite a few subspecies (they're found throughout south-southeastern Asia), but my absolute favorites are:
The Taiwanese beauty ratsnake!
Tumblr media
Cave-dwelling ratsnakes!
Tumblr media
And, of course, Vietnamese blue beauties!
Tumblr media
They're a stunning group of snakes. They're very much typical Old World ratsnakes, with a very feisty attitude to match! They make good pets for keepers at the intermediate level, because they never tame down quite as well as New World rats do and their care is a little tricky.
Awesome snakes!

Grateful I got a laika instead of an Argentine tegu, green tree monitors or a Vietnamese blue beauty ratsnake. Dealing with power outage used to be a nightmare.

The Rhinoceros Ratsnake, also commonly known as the Vietnamese longnose snake, is a species of non-venomous ratsnake in the family Colubridae. The species is found from northern Vietnam to southern China. It has a prominent, distinctive, scaled protrusion on the front of its snout, which has led to its common naming after a rhinoceros.

I have a snake character in DnD, and while I know that's extremely fictional, (and they're also half-dragon), your blog is making me want to give them a specific snake species. Are there any blue snakes? Or snakes you think would be most likely to be criminals?
Super cool! I love this question, the categories of "blue snakes" and "snakes that would be criminals" are very fun ones. :)
Blue is a pretty rare color, but there are a few really blue snakes!
The white-lipped tree pit viper has a well-known and beautiful blue phase:

Blue racers are stunning:

Variable bush vipers can be a lovely soft blue/grey:
Tumblr media
Malayan blue coral snakes are beautiful:

And as for snakes that are likely criminals...
Ratsnakes are master escape artists, and can be very sassy to boot! Vietnamese blue beauties can fit both your criteria.
Tumblr media
Spitting cobras, especially black forest cobras, are little criminals. They look polite but they are not. Take, for example, the spitting cobra incident.
Tumblr media
Mambas are the most likely criminals in my book! They're strong, smart, and have no qualms with causing issues.

What are your thoughts on mangrove snakes as pets? This is still for my story. The character in question starts with a Russian rat snake than a Vietnamese blue beauty. Would they be good for helping you get ready for a mangrove snake?
Mangrove snakes are advanced-level snakes, but I think the track you've set your character on here is realistic and a good one! Russian ratsnakes are generally really good first snakes; they're hardy and usually absolute sweethearts. My own Russian rat, Jojo, has never even thought about biting defensively in his entire life. Vietnamese blue beauties are a good step up into an intermediate-level snake, their care is a bit more difficult and their personalities are a lot more intense. They tend to be very defensive but not super jumpy, and their tags aren't bad, so they're a good first defensive snake. They communicate very clearly with tail rattling/hissing/open-mouthed threat displays when they're upset, so they're a good snake for learning snake body language from.
Mangrove snakes are definitely a step up, but they're especially doable if you have experience with bitey/defensive snakes like blue beauties. Their care is a little tricky - they need a big enclosure they can climb in, and they need it as humid as you can get it without their enclosure being wet. They are rear-fanged venomous (not medically significant to humans) and they tend to be very defensive, jumpy, and not at all afraid to show you what their bite feels like. They're snakes for experienced keepers who are able to confidently handle defensive snakes.

Sorry if I鈥檓 being annoying. I was looking at tank sizes for Vietnamese blue beauty鈥檚. The top source for tank size came up as.
It should be provided with a large terrarium containing a hide-box and assorted visual barriers (such as cork bark or sterilized drift wood). One or two babies may be temporarily housed in a 10 gallon capacity terrarium. A pair of adults should be housed in a 50 to 125 gallon capacity terrarium.
Do you agree or if not what size do you prefer?
You're not being annoying at all!! Questions are what I'm here for. :)
You've found outdated information, I'm afraid. My minimum enclosure recommendation is always an enclosure that is at least as long as the snake, and Vietnamese blue beauties average around 6 feet long. My absolute minimum recommendation would be an enclosure that is at least 6 feet by four feet by two feet - as ratsnakes, they also need height to be able to climb. I also always advise against housing snakes together if they're not garter snakes, and blue beauties aren't a species that should be cohabbed.
A blue beauty enclosure, like other snake enclosures, should have at least one identical hide on either end of the enclosure, and like other ratsnakes, they need lots and lots of climbing branches.
