Lucas is adorable btw and I'm glad he's back to talking and all but,,,, I feel like he got over everything incredibly fast? Like, he went from having severe trauma symptoms to being 100% back to normal. Okay then.

And yo that siren... obviously let’s talk about it for a long minute

And I wanna say, first time I saw this ep was a loooong while ago and I thought I wouldn’t like it so hadn’t seen it till then but now WHOOWEE another ep to prove me wrong and I ended up liking it!!!! But yeah because of that I totally forgot about how Sam got infected and was confused with the storyline but yay that meant it was like I got to watch the plot anew a bit!

So. The siren. Tall dude, supposed to be an epitome of perfection for whatever that meant in the Vic’s mind...

And for Dean... that meant a little brother, especially after just finding out that his own actual brother was still keeping in touch with Ruby, despite everything they’ve went through. So the siren comes blasting in, but more subtly, this dude with short hair that kinda looks like Dean’s (though real talk as much as Dean wants Sam to cut his hair, he’d probably feel really off and weird even if he didn’t say anything of Sam really did), appropriately being dazzled by Baby, knowing frigging everything about the classics to the point of adding something Dean forgets...

And blindly trusting him. Which was the deal sealing point.

Not to say that Sammy doesn’t... but the way Nick just gave in? Like ‘you know what you’re right, I have no idea what’s going on here but ima blindly follow your lead’... as if Dean’s so used to being questioned (especially after his recent spite with Sam about the hard facts and all and ooh cringe worthy moment guess Sam was right after all sorry buds - so maybe this was one of those moments that Dean being challenged was what he’d‘a needed) that actually having someone accept his word without question genuinely caught him off guard.

Next real quick I wanna talk about their actual ‘discussion’ before it became physical. As brothers they’d know what to say that would actually hurt but damn was Sam not holding back... and you could see that he obviously hit Dean with the worst possible statement after statement (*sobs*) that instead of retorting... even under the siren’s spell Dean breaks. And starts fighting.

And wow either Dean really is a better fighter despite what people wanna say about Sam (he was under a spell and Dean still for the better of him - because they were both under the spell. Soulless Sam may have been ruthless, but if MoC Dean assassinated an entire like, family, then soulless Dean woulda been damn dangerous as well, more so than Sam... but take away one of the factors from one of them and leave the other as is? The ‘normal’ ones gonna hold back) or I could even say that that door must have really winded Sam. Which, hm. Just as easily coulda been Sam to Dean though.. in which case it would have been Sam holding the axe and

Woah. Okay. Yeah. Dean was actually gonna do it. Which OH right. He threw the friggin dagger like goddamn if Sam hadn’t dodged just in time, that dagger hurtled right where Sam’s head had been a split second prior. Like yooo damn trained hunters they are - and I will never. Get enough. Of Dean throwing daggers.

Though we saw Bobby for which - Go Bobby!!!!!! Like yo hunters gotta be trained in throwing daggers and goddamn is that an awesome skill

That talk in the end. Bobby knew, Bobby frigging knew Dean was more affected than he let on, his scrutinizing stare centered solely on Dean, especially with his parting statement, that he shouldn’t let the fact that he be influenced by the siren hit them too hard. Not the center problem, but still, something that obviously would have been bothering Dean more, if it weren’t for the fact that the other problem involved his brother. So of course that took higher priority.

And that - Sam knew enough to know that what he said could have been hurtful... which anyone coulda known... but he apparently didn’t know enough about Dean at that moment specifically (and okay, yeah, maybe the writers had to pass the moment off for a later time because the episode was running out of time) to know that no, Dean was still hurt, so no. They weren’t okay. Things weren’t fine between them.

On a lighter note: Dean being annoyed that Bobby gave them soda instead of beer!!!!!

no but like. thee emotion in dean's voice and expression in the beginning of the confession scene where he's saying "I just led us into another trap, all because I couldn't hurt Chuck. Because I was angry and because I just needed something to kill, and because that's all I know how to do!" like, don't tell me jensen just suddenly turned off all that emotion in the latter half of the scene. ESPECIALLY after jensen himself SAID they cut out a lot of his reactions. i KNOW that man was acting his heart out, putting his whole pussy into it with thee micro expressions. and they edited around all that and used the tamest takes to downplay the emotion of this scene

yea i'm gonna talk abt it more in-depth in a post later but ohhhh this whole convo where sam is like "when this is all over i'm going back to school" and dean being like "it's never going to be over" because the saving people part of the motto is Not incidental for him. it's the whole point. meanwhile for sam (and john) this is all about their own personal revenge quest. self-centered, singular focus. but it's not like that for dean. because dean cares. about the whole world even.

dean "i just need a second to adjust" winchester. so real. he just needs some time and space !!! to adjust and work through his feelings !!! but he's always being pushed into situations and given zero time to process anything

thinking abt dean's iconic line in the pilot "dad's on a hunting trip. And he hasn't been home in a few days" and how this is him trying to covertly signal to sam what he's talking abt without explicitly stating it in front of jess, right, we know this. BUT the thing that's the fabrication, the thing that he's saying to just sound normal is the "he hasn't been home in a few days." because as far as jess knows (and dean knows sam, can tell sam hasn't told her a thing abt the hunting world) she thinks there IS a winchester home somewhere out there, a home for john to be away from and come back to. but there is no home and dean was off working his own case separate from john. dean probably hasn't actually seen john in a while. but the thing that's concerning is john being out of touch, john's last strange phone call to dean. there was never any home to be gone from, it wasn't about john not coming "home" to dean in time. and like it feels obvious but sometimes i'll see things like "oh dean hadn't seen john in a few weeks and that's what got him concerned." when really, dean probably has gone long long stretches without seeing john, maybe even without hearing from him too. none of that is what got him searching for john. and so what he says to sam is completely for the cover. there's no home, it's not about john actually being gone for so long, he only says that bit for jess' benefit. but the part that sam's supposed to get is he's on a hunting trip. and something clearly happened because i'm here now so can we please go talk somewhere else so i can give you the real details.

ohh the expository dialogue. like, i get it. i do. they need to get the info to the audience fast but god, tv-show writing reasons aside, in-universe imagine being dean. dean, trained as a soldier, started training way younger than sam, and also made to be his brother's protector and caretaker, having to hear sam rehash their whole childhood, cliffnotes edition, as if dean has somehow forgotten any of it.

oh dean's flirty eyes at ash. covering with a bit of posturing like he thinks ash is a joke. but then, before ash leaves he needs to say that he digs the haircut!!!!! then immediately tries to hit on jo (bc he thinks that's what he should do) but he's literally not feeling it and doesn't even go thru with finishing his "line" on jo. i see u dean

sam's "do i have to?" as his first line is so funny to me because some people will cite this as some kind of symbolism for the theme of autonomy issues and being forced to do things against his will (it's a halloween party, dude) but all this line really does reveal to us is that sam is a boring nerd who never goes to parties (he confirms this himself in 1x07) and is also whiney (younger siblingism) and a stubborn taurus (doesn't wanna go to the party! is trying to get his way by dragging his feet abt it) and kinda being a lame partner bc jess clearly wants to go, is all dressed up and excited, and sam can't even put in any effort? or even just, share in her enthusiasm? and his excuse is "not being a big fan" of halloween and that jess "knows" how he feels about it, except she really doesn't. because sam has not told her the truth about anything ever. so he just looks like a stick in the mud for no good reason. boo sammy. could've done the most low effort costume that i've done many years in a row, just get some cat ears, wear all black and draw a nose and whiskers with some eyeliner. done! and it's not even a monster or ghost or ghoul or anything to remind you of your hunting past
