Hey there, everyone. Who watched and enjoyed the concert stream yesterday? I love re-living their shows.
Also, I'm sorry I never posted about the guys' Veeps streams, but I've either been busy or feeling crummy (lingering cough), so I was sort of on autopilot with my posts in here. There is still time to purchase the Mixtape Tour 2022 Concert (from Philadelphia) and Documentary, just head over to NKOTB's official social media accounts for details.
I hope you all have a great week! ❤️

To lend credence to anon who spells graphics wrongs statement of it being for the doc @daggerandrose did send me this

🤷🏼‍♀️ forgive me for assuming Mr “I will delete my tweets that have spelling errors in them” Tomlinson wouldn’t QC to make sure the grafic going up on his social media didn’t have the correct dates.

what are your thoughts on the movie don't worry darling and the situation regarding the director and cast?
i've been hearing bits and pieces through like, social osmosis, but i'll be honest i do not care enough about anyone involved to have actually done my own research, so grain of salt et cetera and so forth.
olivia wilde – seems like she is craving for the industry to take her seriously, it's interesting that she is working with the same screenwriter as her previous/first movie 'booksmart' because the tonal differences between that movie and this one are .... a lot lol. i definitely acknowledge that she is battling a lot of institutionalized misogyny, but i don't think she's necessarily done the work to be a sought-after director yet, i hope she sticks with it but i'm mostly kinda /shrug emoji about her.
harry styles – idk it also seems like he's craving to be taken more seriously too, but i dunno if media training just isn't a thing or he thinks he's a lot more charming than he actually is, but i really really hope he stops saying all this stupid shit in public. and maybe starts working with a coach, because he is nobody's acting prodigy lol
florence pugh – i read that she recently broke up with zach braff, note she is 26 and he is 47, and i can easily see that experience coloring her perspective about harry and olivia being involved. she doesn't strike me as the nicest person tbh, but she shouldn't have to be to get treated with a base line respect (the video clip of olivia being like 'a wake up call for miss flo' was super annoying to me)
the others – heard gemma chan was vocally supportive of johnny depp so im over her, chris pine seems super bland but potentially a thoughtful dude, i think i saw kiki layne in a trailer but given she seems to be The Only Black Character i'm very wary of how her character is gonna get treated, nick kroll doing serious acting is neat, and i don't know his name but actor who played annoying jonah on veep playing a not dissimilar character (again based only on the trailer) is pretty funny to me, i think shia labeouf in the harry styles role would have been fucking terrifying whereas harry seems to be bringing more of an eerie energy lol
the movie itself – the 1960s us american suburb utopia thing is a bit overdone if you ask me, the aesthetic is fun but i've never been wowed by the actual content of these stories. there is potential for the interplay between chris pine and harry styles's characters to make some points about us american masculinity, but i dunno i'm not holding my breath i guess.

Talking with James Morosini
At this year’s Independent Film Festival Boston, the best movie I saw at this year’s fest was James Morosini’s cringe comedy I Love My Dad. Morosini is a Boston native who over the last decade has been a prolific actor, known for his work on American Horror Story, Foursome, and The Sex Lives of College Girls. But he has also been quietly writing and directing. He has done several shorts and also the 2018 indie flick Threesomething. In I Love My Dad, Morosini wrote, directed and starred in this awkward comedy about a dad Chuck played by Patton Oswalt who catfishes his son Franklin (played by Morosini) after the son blocks him on social media. Magnolia Pictures is releasing the film theatrically today and on digital on August 12. I recently got a chance to speak with Mr. Morosini via zoom about I Love My Dad.
Tumblr media
Morosini
Me: You mentioned that you are from Boston. Where?
JM: I grew up in Weston and Waltham.
Me: Very cool. So at IFFBoston, you alluded to the fact that this film is semi-autobiographical. How much of this film was autobiographical versus fictional?
JM: I think I was around 19 or 20 and I got into a big fight with my Dad and I decided to block him on social media and I changed his name in my phone to “Do Not Answer” and I refused to talk with him. Around that time I was going through some tough stuff and he was really worried about me. But I wouldn’t talk to him about any of it. And I got home one day and this really pretty girl had sent me a friend request online. She had all these amazing pictures and all the same interests as me. I was very excited. And then it turned out that it was my Dad, and my Dad was catfishing me.

Me: This film is a comedy, but yet it is addressing some very serious issues such as depression and suicide. Tell me about the challenges you faced as a writer and director in finding that balance between going from something very serious to something very funny.
JM: I’ve struggled with anxiety and depression pretty much my whole life and I’m interested in destigmatizing these things. I’ve found that some of the funniest people I know are also the most depressed. Comedy is often used as a way of almost coping with these intense feelings. I see the film in a similar light. Franklin is dealing with this experience of loss and loneliness. For me, it’s a way of coping with some of that stuff and making light of it. Comedy is a good anecdote to those things.
Me: It’s true. And it’s a balancing act in the film because you don’t want something so serious to seem like it’s a joke.
JM: That’s right. I see the film as simultaneously both completely sincere and totally sarcastic. I wanted to see if it would be equal parts heartbreaking and hilarious and see if I could keep those tones occurring simultaneously throughout.
Me: Your character Franklin drives up to Maine in the movie and I noticed a few Massachusetts license plates throughout the movie. Even though it was filmed in Syracuse, NY, was the film supposed to take place in a MA suburb?
JM: Yeah. I imagined him being from Waltham. Boston is forever what will be what I consider my home. And I wanted to make it feel all the more personal by setting it there.
Tumblr media
Oswalt and Morosini in I Love My Dad
Me: Patton Oswalt gave such an amazing performance in this film. He is a super funny comedian and scene-stealer in Young Adult and Veep, but it was his performance in Big Fan that I felt really showed he was capable of so much more than just being the funny guy in a movie. Tell me about collaborating with him because he was also a producer in addition to acting.
JM: I think Patton is one of the funniest people I’ve ever met and he also brings so much heart to everything he does, which was the required balance of navigating the role of Chuck through this film. He’s able to be really funny but then tremendously sincere. It was really a joy figuring out the nuances of his performance with him. I’m thrilled by the work he did.
Me: Not to get into spoilers but there was a real parallel in terms of the storylines of both Chuck and Franklin in that they both didn’t think their plans through. Chuck didn’t think about what happens if his son tries to take this online relationship into the real world and meet her. Franklin just decides to go up to meet her without talking it over with her first. And then both of these storylines come crashing into each other in the ending. Was that balance of both of their trajectories something you worked closely with Oswalt on?
JM: Yeah. When Patton came on board, the script was fully formed. So I knew what I wanted to do with that sequence ahead of time. But in terms of our performances in the way that you described, I wanted our performances to compliment one another in that way. Both characters are coming from a place of loneliness and a strong desire to connect. When you’re in that headspace sometimes you just overlook details or you just barrel forward because you’re so eager to make a connection with someone.
Me: In addition to Patton, you also cast Lexington, MA native Rachel Dratch. This is not the kind of role we’ve really seen her in before, but she really runs with it. Tell me about working with her.
JM: I love Rachel Dratch so much. She has tremendous range as an actor. I think a lot of things people have seen her in are big comedies, but she’s also a really strong actor and able to deliver a really nuanced performance. Something that she really connected to is the idea that Erica really just wants to be liked by Chuck and other people and she’s found this way of doing it. And yeah, it was just so fun working with her on this. She just took tremendous willingness to try crazy things. She’s a great actor.
Me: So much of this film is the kind of comedy where you are covering your eyes and watching it through your fingers. It is so awkward and uncomfortable, yet you have to watch and see what happens. Tell me about your comedic influences.
JM: I grew up on a lot of Sasha Baron Cohen. A lot of his work early on just really spoke to me. I watched a lot of The Office, that kind of discomfort comedy I’ve always really responded to more-so than joke driven comedy. In terms of film influences, I thought a lot about Ruben Ostlund’s work. He’s made these very sophisticated cringe comedies. There’s also a film Toni Erdmann that I thought a lot about while I was making this. Any time where characters want to connect with another character, cringe is inherit upon that premise because that person is sometimes having to pretend to be someone that they’re not in order to be liked. And I think that’s the essential nature of cringe. You can see someone trying to do that and you almost relate to it too much.
Me: Was it hard for you to be a writer and director and also be a lead actor in this film?
JM: I’ve been making films in this way since I was a little kid, so it’s something that I’m really comfortable doing. But this was my first time performing all of these duties at this scale. So it definitely took some getting used to, in making sure I was really showing up in full to each. The performance I wanted to feel authentic and I really wanted to feel connected to each of these moments as an actor and really be in the story. But then I also make sure that I was showing up for my whole cast directorially and giving them the support that they needed. And to my whole crew. A lot of that happened in pre-production, where I planned out the film ahead of time. I worked very closely with my acting coach Doug Tompos. He and I really crafted these moments ahead of time, so when I showed up I was really able to focus on the other people on the film and had a clear sense of what we were trying to execute.
Me: With all of the festivals like South By Southwest building up to this week’s theatrical and then digital release, what’s it been like for you this buzz building up to this film’s opening?
JM: So exciting. We’ve been all inside for the past couple of years. So being able to release a movie theatrically after the pandemic and providing an opportunity for us to gather around the campfire (so to speak) and hopefully is very exciting. I’m just very grateful that we’re in this position.

The missing man.
Tumblr media
May 16, 2024
At the Republican National Committee's spring donor retreat held at his Florida golf resort last week, Donald Trump mingled with a long list of potential running mates. Included were such reliable Trump toadies as senators Marco Rubio of Florida, J.D. Vance of Ohio and Tim Scott of South Carolina. Also in attendance were North Dakota governor Doug Burgum, South Dakota governor and puppy killer Kristi Noem, as well as New York congresswoman Elise Stefanik.
But little notice has been given to the fact that absent from this parade of flatterers and flunkies was Trump's former vice president, Mike Pence (pictured above leaving the MAGA formation). It's standard practice, of course, for presidents who are running for reelection to keep their vice presidents on the ticket. So why isn't Trump?
The answer to that is fairly straightforward: Pence refused to join in Trump's illegal fake electors plot to overturn the 2020 election and return him to office. It seems that when Trump incited thousands of armed rioters — some chanting "Hang Mike Pence!" — to attack the US Capitol in January 2021, that was the last straw. From then on, the once faithful veep was a committed never-Trumper. Said Pence later, "President Trump asked me to put him over the Constitution. But I chose the Constitution, and I always will."
Naturally, Trump never called Pence on or after January 6 to see if he was all right. And never apologized for putting his dependably loyal #2 in danger. Instead, Trump's response was about what you'd expect from a weak, petty individual who never forgets or forgives a slight. Last August, he wrote on his failing social media site:
WOW, it’s finally happened! Liddle’ Mike Pence, a man who was about to be ousted as Governor Indiana until I came along and made him V.P., has gone to the Dark Side. I never told a newly embolded…Pence to put me above the Constitution…He’s delusional, and now he wants to show he’s a tough guy.
Last year, Pence entered the presidential race himself, calling for a rejection of Trump's "siren song of populism" and for a return to the solid conservative policies of "limited government, free enterprise, fiscal responsibility and traditional moral values." But his words fell on deaf ears with a party mired in MAGA madness. He dropped out in October 2023.
And so it is that, with former VP Pence omitted from the Mar-a-Lago auditions, Trump's squadron of those who could serve as his campaign wingman has a noticeable vacancy.

I receive a check in the mail for jury duty. Forty dollars. Hmm.
Trump guilty of fraud. He is supposed to be a good businessman. Supposed to be a genius. But he claims to have money he doesn't have. He greatly exaggerated the value of his properties, sometimes tripling their worth. There is said to be overwhelming evidence against him. Trump immediiately goes on his social media site and rants. Unfair! (Etc.) Stay tuned.

Power outage this morning, when I would be (routinely) going to my computer. Odd feeling of not being able to type a few words. Recalling the days when I used to write in longhand... The channel on the TV that plays classical music is (of course) also out. Funny...my dependence on this morning interlude of music.
Later: Problem resolved but my routine interrupted.
Odd, this unexpected break in routine.
Evening: Debate among Republican presidential candidates. Trump absent, of course, but due to his lead in the polls said to be the big winner in this (as the others butt heads). Perhaps this is all about who will be chosen as veep. (Though he was among them, we can forget Pence.)
Trump says, later, he wouldn't chose any of them as a running mate.
While the so-called debate went on Trump spoke at a rally. Non-union auto workers (so it seems). They were cheering him on, of course. I think that, like the crowd who greeted him when he came down the escalator, they were paid a little something to be there.

Blossom music centre has posted about Louis’ tour more number of times than LTHQ has. You would think Louis’ primary job was movie producer rather than a touring musician.
I wonder whether the Veeps contract stipulated a fixed number of social media posts (for example, daily tweets and IG posts during the week leading up to the livestream event).
Live Nation is much better at branding and selling than LTHQ. The main message of a Blossom Music Center ad is that CONCERTS ARE FUN. Come for the music act; stay for the food and drinks and companionship.
The main message of LTHQ is that LOUIS AND LOUIES NEED EACH OTHER. It’s no longer a positive message when LTHQ/ BMG considers Louies to be mindless consumers.
Of course all music labels think of fans as consumers to some extent; they need to make a profit. However, the nature of being a fan through the thick and thin of Louis’ career is that it feels like a richer, closer relationship. Louis’ team demanding more of his fans while doing nothing to expand his fanbase seems like a misuse of power. The music is always wonderful, but the music comes from a human being. Recently it feels like a club of lazy people using Louies to grow their money tree.
