#i love my dad

My dad has a little gag he loves doing that involves me being trans (it’s fun- don’t worry).
So, my dead name is also the name of a food item (spelled different but sounds the same). We sometimes eat that food item- it’s a nice treat. His little joke is that he will only call that food “Dead Names”- which leads to hilarious instances of hearing my 70 year old father call out “Hey, I’m going to go grab some Dead Names while we’re here!” while he’s half way down the isle in the grocery store, or him coming home and saying “hey, I picked up a box of Dead Names while I was out! :)”
It just makes me so overwhelmingly happy that my old name is not something wrapped in grief. It doesn’t represent a loss. It is something we can smile about and remember even if it doesn’t fit me anymore.

My father and I have a complicated history, but one thing I can say for sure (he told me so) is that he would’ve done what joel did if it was me and idk much about healthy parent-child relationships,, but that IS love

OKAY SO LIKE.
My dad is obviously not the best at being emotionally vulnerable.
HOWEVER.
Yesterday he walked into the living room, sat down next to me, and said "I'm really proud of you. You're doing so well for yourself and I'm proud that I helped shape the person you're growing into."
LIKE?

one of my fav stories to hear my dad tell is the one where as a kid he had a fucking Ambition and it was to hit a bird with a stone. so if he saw any small bird in the sky he would always aim as best he could and pitch a rock at it. always always and he got better and better at it, and finally one day he made the perfect throw—the rock's trajectory was perfectly aligned with the bird's, and he was going to do it, he was going to hit it. and he watched with so much glee that soured so quickly as he saw the bird get almost close enough to hit the stone and then quickly and so easily dip just out of its way, avoid the stone, resume its original level, and keep flying. and then he ends the story with just how he stood there stricken, realizing it was never going to happen; no matter how hard he tried or how skilled he got, he was never going to be able to do it. so he gave up. and then he'll have this disbelieving laugh about it and then that's it that's the story

My Dad always forgets he has his ringtone set as the Wind waker title screen music so whenever his phone rings we’re all like “Dad your phone is ringing” and every single time he’s like “oh... I thought it was just somebody playing the game”

With my “Dad being supportive about me being trans” post blowing up, I figured I share him being supportive about my bi/pan/queerness.
I was like 16 when I came out to him. I remember being so anxious- I had never seen him be homophobic, but he was also an old Baptist Boomer from the Bible Belt, so I was nervous. Plus, at that time I was dating one of my best friends (we are both AFAB). So I came out and explained I was dating someone. I fumbled, struggling to get it out, and he just went, “It’s [REDACTED], isn’t it?”
He then explained that he kinda knew I was queer and was dating my best friend in secret, but he didn’t want to push me to come out before I was ready. He wanted me to do it on my own terms and just hoped I’d feel comfortable enough to share it with him.
Me being queer didn’t stop him from being an Embarrassing Dad tho, so it’s not uncommon for him to be like “I saw someone you’d find attractive today lol.” And either show me a picture if they were some celebrity/ athlete or describe them if it was just someone around town. The worst part honestly is that he’s always right. Please, I don’t want to be perceived like this by my father. You shouldn’t know My Type so well. I perish.
The closest he’s ever come to being homophobic is when he was teaching me how to drive and I made way too many, “But I’m too queer to go straight!!” Jokes.

I think my favourite part of episode 5 was watching my dad stare at Ares in awe because he’s being played by a wrestler he really adored when he was a teenager (Edge was his stage name). Like I think Ares was cast perfectly, dad sat there smiling the entire time he was on screen. Apparently when Edge was a wrestler he was often cast as the villain I honestly you can tell. He was perfectly unhinged
I love that we get to share the series

Me and my 40 something dad are watching death note together and let me tell you. When he saw the homoerotic foot washing scene, there was this look of awe in his eyes. He turned to me and said, "that's biblical." And then 15 seconds later, when light starts towelling L's hair, he went, "oh, that's *gay*."
But it was weirdly not in, like, a judgy way? He just took both the biblical symbolism and the yaoi energy of Light and L and just. Accepted it. He's pretty conservative, so it was just weird to see him take it all head on. He also looked ready to cry when L died (he was his favorite character).
TL;DR : my dad is a L stan now.
