Edsel Axle — Variable Happiness (Worried Songs)

Variable Happiness by Edsel Axle

We’ve come to know the Philadelphia indie artist Rosali through her clarion Americana-tinged songwriting and the thumping primitivism of her punk trio the Long Hots. We have not, up to now, considered her closely as a guitar player, which is perhaps short-sighted since she does that in both bands. Here she brings the electric guitar up to the front, taking up a glove laid down by Bill Orcutt, Bardo Pond, Loren Connors and others. Over six tracks as Edsel Axle, she improvises jagged rock riffs and electrified acid folk, just her and a guitar and a four-track, but definitely plugged in.

Rosali’s band has a couple of other worthy guitar players in David Nance and James Schroeder, so one faulty assumption might be that the Neil Young-ish flavor on 2021’s No Medium came from them (Nance’s solo and band work leans that way as well). But here, by herself, and not burdened by the need to sing, Ms. Middleton demonstrates that she, herself, has a bit of the Crazy Horse fixation. These songs sound like the instrumental freakery between verses on Ragged Glory or Sleeps with Angels. The guitar carves out giant, resonating figures in the opener “Some Answer,” letting the long notes ring out, then splintering them into buzzing, disintegrating feedback hum. This opening salvo is the most rock and least folk leaning of the six, with a keening wail vibrating under lapping layers of distorted melody. You can hear bits of Loren Connors in the way rage and beauty coincide here, a roar in even the most tranquil, pensive moments.

The title track runs a little cooler, building contemplative space out of steady picked patterns and resonating threads of melody. This one has the quiet assurance of certain Steve Gunn instrumentals, eschewing pyrotechnics for a clear, unobstructed line of sight. It’s also manifestly a solo piece, without looped or overdubbed embellishment. By contrast, “Come Down from the Tree” is denser and more dizzying, punctuated with loud, echoing chords and letting flurries of quicker notes linger in insect hives of buzzing overtones. It reminds me a bit of Bright, a band I hadn’t thought about in years, for its sun-dappled balance of clarity and mystery. If you look past the lack of voice and flute, you might also hear a little Bardo Pond here, the howl of feedback like an undertow beneath long-toned serenity.

These tracks are all relatively lengthy, all built around repeated motifs and without conventional song structure, yet they are consistently engrossing. There’s an abstract, chaotic beauty in these evolving compositions, the fire that you normally find between Rosali verses let loose on its own terms.

Unfortunately I was reminded of Variable Barricade and I'm like "haha ah yes, the worst love interests you can imagine thrown into one game so that the MC can be disgusted with all of them". Then I was like "I miss my son, Nayuta. What a little freak. I want to draw him again". But also had no idea what to draw so I drew him getting yelled at by Ichiya and OH MAN. WHAT A SHOCK. It's Ichiya's birthday and it was completely unintentional I didn't mean to give the man art for his bday but here we are.

something that i think is really interesting about billy's view of flint in s3 is that he thinks flint's death (if it's in a self-sacrificial way) will not absolve him of his sins in life but that it will make up for the hurt he's caused. or at least that billy wants it to. he pushes flint to take the maroon queen hostage so that flint will die, but flint will die for the crew. billy says in s3e6 "with all the shit that he's done, the things he's gotten away with, [flint dying to free them from the maroons] would have been fair. that would have been right" and that he wants to see "the moment the world finally catches up to [flint]" if/when he dies dueling teach. billy has a very simple idea of justice - he wants flint to die for the death and destruction he has caused, no matter how. that will make the world right, that the narrative will be balanced again.

but what billy doesn't know, and what makes me INSANE about this show is that the full quote from billy is is "I think part of the reason I've been able to stand by his [flint's] side is that I wanted to make sure I've got a good view of the moment the world finally catches up to him... and this story starts to make sense again." but to flint, what he has done is in service of his own justice. justice for the deaths of thomas and miranda and james mcgraw, for the theft of his home in london and again his home in nassau. but to billy, HIS narrative identifies flint as the villain. as the monster. for billy to get justice, flint must die. but it's SUCH a good line, because it also prompts the viewer to think - in OUR narrative, which follows flint and silver mostly, flint must succeed. we want him to beat teach and take the fleet back and overthrow the british empire. flint is shown to be a murderer but he is also shown to be deeply deeply human and we are set up to sympathize him. but it makes you consider what other voices we aren't hearing. who else has been hurt by flint's actions? what narratives have flint as the villain ? none of the characters in black sails are the heroes in every story - but to who are they the villains?

#idk this SHOW MAN. the rewatch is going quite well. makes me INSANE #'yes yes flint is billys england weve all seen it' IT JUST MAKES ME SO RABID !!!!!!!!!#the flint billy parallels make me climb walls bro #like. flint wants freedom from a colonial monarchist rule and becomes a pirate. which were famously democratic. and yeah sure hes not NOT #elected for his position - but black sails goes out of its way to show in s1 the kinds of subterfuge going on about the voting.#flint does NOT keep his position as captain fairly until silver. and even then we arent shown the voting but silver clearly keeps his #constituents happy somehow. idk the ship politics are soooo interesting to me!!!!!#i also think theres something deeper in black sails in general about leaders/followers. in terms of like. flint proposing his plato-based #philsopher-king bullshit. and his disregard for 'the men' as people beneath him... but ALL the captains do this. there's not a single #instance of a crew member whos given much agency or who makes a bid for leadership and isnt punished (singleton dusfrene billy even)#there is only the Leaders - flint silver charles vane rackham teach - and the Followers - the variable number of walrusmen that changes #based on the ship theyre on lol - the men on the ranger and the colonial dawn #granted some of this is just due to narrative reasons i think. but in a show thats so deliberate. its worth considering.#black sails #canis watches black sails

We really need to touch on the fact that the Decepticons are kinda fucking starving in Earthspark. They're forced to either work with Dr. Meridian and risk being taken apart MECH style, chance stealing from the Autobots and being imprisoned Primus Knows Where (hell... what tells the 'Cons that they aren't just going to fucking Die via GHOST), or fuck off into the woods and 100% definitely run out of energon because I doubt that there's a lot of if any unattended caches of energon.

They're in a very serious situation, and I'm going to be honest not a lot keeps the Autobots from being in it either because it seems like the 'bots are at GHOST's mercy.

#nils talking #feeling very tired after this week #the start was so full of uncertainty and while a bit of relief has set in #I'm just drained #tomorrow I'll be visiting a friend for a semi-regular thing and I'm not really in the mood #but I also don't wanna cancel so I hope I'll just feel better tomorrow than I did the last few days #bc I do feel kinda lonely rn and like I'm treading water #I need change and closure and I won't get it before the year is over #too many variables too much that still needs to happen first #but there could be smaller changes that are less drastic #connections that don't need to be for a long time but rather beautiful moments #or a deepening of connections I already have but which are very marginal #at the moment I see both potential within me but also my current limits and limitations #anyway I just hope that the next few months will bring happiness and progress for me #I don't wish to fade away into the background #I want to try my best at making an impact and being remembered fondly #to not just be the awkward fat person that stood in the corner of the party #or who was just a random fellow student or coworker #I hate feeling powerless but it's so difficult to change things when you lack the energy #sorry about this if you read this you're entitled to compensation #also for the record I don't recommend looking up what former classmates are doing a decade after graduating school #it's a mostly depressing affair

Being critical of art is all fun and games until you are the art that is being critiqued :(

#God I was feeling so good today but duuuude I’m so scared abt the opera from purely a technical standpoint #like I’m not even stressed about fucking anything up anymore it just hit me that like. I invited people to see this and it might be bad :(#due to variables outside of my control!!!! I hate not being able to fix things #I would be less stressed if my mother wasn’t seeing it but tragically I’m proud of what /i/ am achieving so I really want her to be there!!#but I know it’s going to be SUCH a fucking let down after the other shows she’s seen at my school like #the productions she saw were SO GOOD on a technical standpoint and both of the productions this year were so bad :((((#like even conveptually I don’t even know if I’m fully convinced and I’m in the show!!!#And idk. It’s hard when you don’t have an extended family (or like much of a family at all)#so the only people coming to your show are like. Broadway technicians #the closest thing I have to an uncle is a lighting designer and a stage manager my mother knows #very fun sometimes. Other times I want to throw myself onto a pyre #Why do the stakes have to be so high why can’t they just be happy to support me :)) I shall never be the center of her world. Ah well #But also we would not be as close as we are without our shared love of theater production so. Catch-22 #And at the end of the day I’m more sad that I can’t be proud of the show #it’s not anyone’s fault it just is and I need to be okay with it #I worked really hard and it matters that I’m doing this #GOD SORRY!!!#vent #portal of rambling

This is a "complain into the void about being annoyed" post so feel free to ignore lol

ok like i get being mad about the a/c not being fixed as fast as you'd like and the various other legitimate maintenance problems ppl have been dealing with when they shouldn't have to be. but pls don't get mad at the maintenance workers not being able to give you a timeline for a fix because of the ADMIN not having tracking info for a part they need for your a/c repair as if they were the ones who manufactured the part and handle it's transport like babe not only do the guys who come in to do your work likely not handle this shit themselves separate from the admin, but the housing org and the a/c part ppl are seperate businesses, ran by people with limited time/resources/staff and high demand like. The ppl could literally just not have stuff to tell you because THEY weren't given a way to track it themselves by the a/c part seller? You don't always get tracking info, like when a teacher i know had issues with getting a part shipped for an oven issue they were fixing or with some international orders. Did ya think that maybe they aren't purposefully trying to slight you in any way but are just ppl with limited info and resources who ALSO would rather just fix your issue and be done with it like? Be mad about the high cost of living with an administration that isn't as efficient as it should be considering the scope of their work and the high demand, be mad with issues like your a/c or water not working properly considering the price you pay for maintenance and the space itself, but don't get mad at the repair workers for issues outside of their control or make a fuss because of a "problem" that really is just how life goes sometimes, instead of acting like it was meant to be a personal slight just cause it's not the most convenient or what you wanted

#i'm mad over stupid stuff #because most of these complaints are legitimate #but i hate ppl complaining about dumb shit when there's plenty of reasonable things to be upset about #i just feel like sympathetic to the repair staff who is overwhelmed with a ton of maintenance requests and poor admin #like they can't be happy with the state of the college repair admin either so i don't get why students act like they're equally at fault #or straight up blame them for issues that aren't in their control #like if a worker tells you they don't know a timeline for fixing the a/c because they need to wait for a part to ship and that can take time #THEY PROBS MEAN IT BABE.#idk it's like the same ppl who yell for respecting workers will also be so critical of workers for shit that ain't even their fault #and over something like not having a timeline due to shipping. SHIPPING. which could have so many variables #like if it's an international order that shit could in fact take weeks or have wonky tracking info just cause it's like that #idk man #i love how i'm literally just mad bc this one person got annoyed over one dumb thing even though everything else was reasonable #rose's notes #rose's vents

im a medical marijuana user and i personally feel a difference between sativa, indica, and hybrid. sativas and indicas exacerbate my heart problems while indica does not. also sativas and indicas don’t help my insomnia and can make me feel restless. i use marijuana for my gastrointestinal disorder & insomnia and i also have 4 other chronic illnesses

I mean that’s definitely interesting to hear! I’m just curious what strains you’re referring to. Most stuff is pretty crossbred so you aren’t gonna find “pure” indicas or sativas. Either way I’m glad cannabis can help u
