Proyecto "Cultura digital"

Thinking about design VI
Most people agree the key to keep your kitchen organized is storage. Me too. I am always having a hard time to keep my kitchen tool organized, until I saw the food prep set.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Looks amazing. I like the capability of staking the most used kitchen tools together. It is colored coded so you won’t mixed up 1/3 cup with 1/2 cup by not looking at the labels. It also provides constraints that if you stack wrong one onto another, the slot doesn’t fit well. So by times you will know which one should stack on which one. The color also helps you identify the order: The bigger one tends to be lighter and the smaller one tends to be darker. Color order also follows the color wheel, start from green. People might not recognize the order of a color wheel buy may notice it is not colors that contrast with each other. Once people found this rule then will naturally map the order.
Tumblr media
I consider it is a good example using natural mapping and constraints to help people utilizing tools and keep the simplicity of the design. And of course, achieve the goal of better storage.

God, y’all.
I realized that part of the reason I’ve been so unlikely to post anything original anywhere that I had more than a few followers for the past few years, since I graduated from college even, was that in some part of my mind I knew that I might have to Rely on those Accounts where I already had impact, to try to make ends meet in order to remain independent from my parents.
I’m taking a UXDI intensive bootcamp right now. That means that, after I finish, I’ll be able to get a job in an extremely broad field that is in VERY high demand and that I’m already completely technically skilled enough to do. I basically just got to a point. Where I Know I’ll never have to rely on my passions to make a living ever again. Ever ever ever again. Which means I’ll never have to rely on the Collective Positive Opinion of the Internet to save me from having to move back in with my parents.
That means, that I’m Free from having to Worry about it very much because, like, let’s be real tech companies don’t even fire people who are Actually Legitimately Nightmare People let alone like. A few people on the internet got mad about you saying you liked the wrong anime. I’m never gonna be a Name that people Know for my Art outside of the internet. I can let my art be weird and fun and gay without worrying about Optics and Needing my internet presence to be Unobjectionable. Most people at tech companies know NOTHING about the internet and anyone who Does know about the internet, also know enough abt how the internet works to not just take stupid easily disproven accusations on face value.
Im Free. To shitpost and talk and chat to the void (and you know, the people who follow me! For whatever reason) once again!!!

Event #1 blog
The first event I attended was titled ‘Intro to UX Design’ on the 17th of March 2020 via General Assembly’s live stream. The livestream was conducted by Javi Calderon who is a UXDI Lead Instructor from Washington DC, America.
During the livestream, Javi explained the basics of UX by specifically defining the difference between UI, UX and Usability. He emphasised that UX is to generate a delightful and intuitive experience for the users. Many of the concepts explained by Javi were also explained during NM3221 lectures. Certain concepts include the 10 Usability Heuristics and Design Process (empathise, define, ideate, prototype and test). During the livestream, we were also told to draw out a lo-fi prototype based on the problem statement: we believe busy professionals need a better way to do laundry because of time. The prototype is illustrated below.
Tumblr media
Immediate learning points from this live stream includes the UX honeycomb evaluation tool. This is a diagram used to illustrate how to create a valuable design by accomplishing the following:
- Useful
- Desirable
- Accessible
- Credible
- Findable
- Usable
During the live stream, Javi also mentioned an interesting point that designers do. Designers fill in the gap between the business’ needs and the users’ goals. Hence, UX fits in between that. He used insightful examples to illustrate where UX fills in the gap. For instance, on booking.com, the users goal converges with the business’ needs at the search bar; which is where the user fills out where he/she wants to travel and where the business solves their problem. He also mentioned how this is the most continually optimised part of booking.com in order to always give the users useful information.
I also found how UX can be implemented into service design very insightful. He explains how we can take the knowledge of digital design in UX and implement it into the physical sphere. So by using the UX method, we can understand the user and come up with solutions in order to fix their problems or satisfy their needs. For instance, when a child wants to do an MRI scan they would feel scared. To avoid this problem, one can redesign the MRI scan in order to look more fun. It can be decorated with pirate stickers. The nurse/doctor can be dressed up as a pirate and create a storyline for the child to follow in order to mask the MRI scan as a game. I found this as a compelling way of utilising UX methods into other businesses that you would not typically think would be related to UX.

My journey to learning front end web development between music performing & recording gigs is challenging, fun and exciting! Although I have to get used to being in a classroom in the morning (which has been very renewing). I really miss the academic culture of band geeks freaking out over high notes & harmonies, but developers seem to be cut from the same cloth and are just excited by creative vector graphics & well executed responsive design. #uxdi #justgladtobehere #worldwideinterwebs #wireframe #html5css3 (at New York, New York)

3 examples of good design versus 3 examples of bad design
Good design #1:  Pandemic
This is a mobile app that was adapted from a board game. It’s great because there are lots of pieces in the board game, but they designed the app so that everything fits on the screen and is unambiguous. User options are displayed in dashboard and only the turns that are available to the user are highlighted (unavailable options are visible but grayed out). Although the whole board fits on screen, it can be zoomed in/out by pinching or it can be re-centered by pressing a single button. Turns can be reversed. Cards that have been played or discarded can be viewed. Rules and settings are easily accessible. It is as close to a perfect digital replica of the physical game as it can be. Plus the opening sequence is pretty cool, as is the animation that goes along with “outbreaks,” which gives an added layer of fun/drama.
Tumblr media
Good design #2:  Jimmy John’s
Their website stores information from previous orders, including what you ordered, where it was delivered, and payment information. This makes ordering very quick and simple. Their sandwiches are then also delivered quickly. The only problem I’ve had is that the customization of sandwiches doesn’t offer the option to add sprouts to my sandwich, so I’ve been entering the name on the order as “Add sprouts plz,” which is kind of weird, but it’s a very minor inconvenience.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Good design #3:  Uber
No money exchanged between driver and passenger. There is a pool option which is slower but cheaper. Passenger knows his driver's name as well as what kind of car he’s driving, his license plate number, estimated time of arrival. The user can even see on the map where his ride is. This makes for a very smooth transaction from start to finish.
Tumblr media
Bad design #1:  4moms Mamaroo
Touchscreen. Seems simple enough, right? Except that it’s not a touchscreen. Surprise! There are buttons on either side that are raised very slightly and are the same color as the surrounding rubber, making them almost impossible to see in low light. The buttons should be colored differently or, even better, make the touchscreen a touchscreen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bad design #2:  My car’s navigation screen/audio player
I have to scroll through the hundreds of artists (or worse, 10s of thousands of track listings) on my device to get to what I want. It should be set up to allow searching. Also they stopped making software compatibility updates after iPhone 5, so I have to use my iPod instead of streaming music from Spotify on my phone.
Tumblr media
Bad design #3:  Adobe Suite
Hear me out. Adobe Suite is wonderful. Between Photoshop, InDesign, After Effects, Illustrator, and now Experience Design, Adobe offers products with complete functionality to accomplish any design project you can dream up. That said, Adobe products have a pretty steep learning curve. There are so many options, it makes it hard for a beginner to know how to do anything. There are 23,703 videos on lynda.com teaching people how to use Photoshop, versus 208 for Sketch. I know, there is a chasm of difference between what Photoshop and Sketch can do, but there are 114 times as many videos for Photoshop as there are Sketch. A possible solution to this could be to offer users to enable or limit features based on their level of experience: novice, intermediate, seasoned, expert, god. Something like that. Only offer so much to the user at a time, and offer in-app instruction to empower the user. This will help get them comfortable with the software faster and produce projects they’re more satisfied with.

Day 2: Kitchen Nightmares
Day 2: Kitchen Nightmares
Today is the second day of my UXDI class by General Assembly. Also for those of you celebrating, Happy Lunar New Year!
Our second instructor took charge and she kicked off straight into the History of UX (briefly). Don Norman, Alan Cooper…your host of familiar names returned but we focused more on the implications of this and companies that are trying to hire UX designers are thinking.
Do we still need more education and evangelism on UX?
We then moved into practicing the concept of HCD with how UX designers conduct research. I believed all of this had been already covered in the pre-course… but there was this thing called “diary studies”. Absolutely intriguing as she proceeded to inform us it is one of the gold standard of of user research (along with contextual inquiry). And of course in conjunction with other studies this would, inevitably and anyway, fill in some holes of interview scripts that may give you more quantifiable, more personal data. If you’ve written your own journal entries, you’ll know what I mean.
Then there was a group Sprint almost, research plan trial run for 20 minutes. This involved us imagining a fake client brief based on a dog-walking marketplace business model which required an app solution. Later below you’ll see why this is important, but it covered the steps how to utilise our assumptions to arrive at project-meditated research plans, as well as the questions to put in your interview. If you were to do one, or other methods I suppose. Here is an example of our group’s convergence:
Tumblr media
Lunch at 12.30, and the instructor announced an hour of lateness. This meant much less time and inability for us to finish our project tasks allocated for today…Anyway we still took the hour and came back at 1.30pm for more theory.
Right so the solo project. Basically a detached Sprint from start to ideation, wireframe and very very early presentation. This was based on food preparation. I thought, ooh so exotic! I can’t reveal the entire scope at this stage due to not enough knowledge, but I was paired anyway with another student and just shoved to start the race right at 3.30pm. This was the timetable:
Tumblr media
As you can see, we were actually 2 hours behind project time schedule.
Anyway, minor hiccups in the grand scheme of things, but as soon as we were split I rushed to create my partner a brief and urged her to do the same. So that I could quickly create my research plan and interview sets. My allocated partner will be with me for the week, and she was amazing but had english as a second language and so this was another unaccounted difficulty. I had to manage and scaffold her thoughts to a point of independence. Anyway we both rushed and rushed to pull my questions on paper, managed to get part of her interviews done, but never managed to finish mine as I was still stuck proofreading my own plan copy. I thought I was being an idiot sandwich.
This meant extra project hours to buff up myself, but at least I was in love with the process. Anyway, our instructors popped into the call and told us we would get an hour recompense on Thursday.
Phew! What a panic run! As of writing this I have (finally) completed the task despite the fact I will need to catch up tomorrow and still do my user interview.
Anyway that’s it for today. Going to go out with my real partner and celebrate the Lunar New Year!

Exciting for the UXDI
Hi, I’m Magic Dough.
I will be starting the UXDI class in Chicago in one week! I left my job as Landscape Architect today and prepared to be immersed in the UX world. How exciting!
I started learning about UX about 4 years ago. I just graduated from RISD and found a position with local landscape contractor. Winter was the down season and I started doing some small business on Ebay. While I wanted to promote my shop, I discovered that people trusted those shops that have customized interface. Therefore, I started to self-taught how to build my own store interface. I was learning dreamweaver, and learning how to organize all the store information by doing researching how other stores organizing it. It was a fun and fulfilling process.
As time goes by, I constantly helped out my company and my church maintaining their website and App. Sometime I have couple ideas of a website and App I want to build. I started taking classes online, including Udacity, Springboard, Open2study and Youtube. I enjoyed those classes and wanted to explore more, and I felt studying by myself is not enough. UX emphasizes human interaction. How do I make my UX skill better without interact with people? I decided to take an actual class, a class that has the opportunity to interact with different disciplines and companies. That’s why I chose GA.
I am so glad that I can make this life changing decision. I figured the class will be intense. But I believe it will be a fruitful and joyful time! Let the Magic Dough does the magic!

The New Digital School Motivation
I'd be the first to admit that I do not comprehensively understand the design process yet, but I am by it. My fascination began prior to enrolling at Morehouse College, I interned at a small app development agency in Atlanta, and was enamored by the process of design. My mentor was the designer for the agency and each day I would observe my mentor while he worked. After my internship ended I knew that I was going to be a UXDI Designer. I abandoned the thought of college and began interviewing for General Assembly's UXDI program, but my mother was not supportive. So submissively, I enrolled at Morehouse. The closest thing to UX was Computer Science, and that's how I selected my major. As I began to immerse myself in my course work, I lost sight of my "why" thus losing myself and my dreams. My mindset began to change, my creativity began to wane, and my curiosity was dwindling. After coming to grips with the fact that in order to secure my dream job I would have to go further into debt and attend graduate school.I started to ask myself difficult questions, "what is the point?", "why am I here?". My doubts and worries began to plague my psyche thus affecting my performance in the classroom. Still, I wasn't ready to let go of my mothers dream of me graduating. These conflicting ideas began to weigh heavy on me and I began answering the recurring questions. I've made a decision independent of any outside influence to relinquish my attachment a degree in order to be who I want to be. I want to to attend the the New Digital School because my current path does not align with who I want to be. I yearn for an education that will help me become who I want to be.
With self direction and an drive, I plan to utilize the new digital school's environment to form great relationships with my colleagues and mentors by taking a genuine interest in them. I am a personable person who likes to collaborate with others. Collaborating with others, makes work more gratifying. I believe strongly that my work at The Digital Design School will lead to an outstanding outcome. I am aware that attending the New Digital School will present a plethora of obstacles and challenges. Understanding Portugal's culture, and getting acquainted to the environment is no easy feat. Creating an optimal lifestyle in itself will be difficult. However, I am not afraid of these challenges, in fact, I embrace them. These challenges are what attracted me to the new digital school.
My goal is to become a full stack designer that designs with inclusion and accessibility in mind.
