It's a lie, between you and I
The first time Yudhisthir met his son after exile, he didn't recognise him. Prativindhya had grown, from the boy who stomped his feet and yelled that he wanted the sweetest fruits. He has grown from the boy who was obsessed with the colour gray and always rubbed his eyes sore at the sun. He had grown so much.
"My son!" He wants to cry,"My first son, my only son, my darling son." But it's not true, it never was.
(Yudhishthir was a father as soon as he put fire to his father's pyre.)
No, father can be alive, let us check his pulse again!—No, Mother doesn't need to leave, we can ask Mahadev for a boon!I won't eat if you need me to!—I promise to never cry!—I promise I won't speak for years!
Prativindhya helps Krishna with the plate of fruit he's carrying with a smile. He's young, his boy, and yet so serene. Yudhishthir hates himself for taking away his childhood like his father took his.
(Father! Come back, please, I can't live, take me with you, please, please, please, ple—)
Prativindhya wears his hair the same way Balram does, shorter than most and with no partition in his hair, slicked back. His waves are all Panchali, curling like live fire. His eyes have changed, they're lighter. There's some scars on his skin, residue chandan behind his ear.
He wants to laugh hysterically. Of course, his son learnt from his klutz of an uncle. Bheem complained of sweat too much and chandan was the only thing that kept him quiet.
(That and now, his anger.)
Prativindhya glares at his younger brothers until they stop squabbling amongst themselves before he greets them. Nakul sneaks a teasing glance at Yudhishthir that is ignored entirely.
Prativindhya collapses in his arms the second he embraces him and Yudhishthir almost wishes for his spear to run someone through. His son. His darling son, so young, barely a man grown and so, so cracked within.
Yudhishthir knows a broken boy forced to become a man too soon when he sees him. He sees him everyday in the mirror, in his brothers, and now his son. He cradles the back of Prativindhya's neck in the same way he did when he first held his boy and his son melts.
"I will protect you," he promises to his son in a whisper harsh and primal and something savage that only comes from living in the forests as much as he has. "Nothing will happen to you. I will tear down any pain that comes your way, my son."
Prativindhya doesn't reply. He hides his face in his father's neck like he was a child again.
(A child you are, and a child you will be, my son. I ruined your childhood, I will spend my life repenting.)
That was the last time they embraced before the day Yudhishthir held his dead son in his arms. Face in neck, arms too tight around him and the back of his neck bowed.
That day, Yudhisthir is the child. He has no father, he has no respite. He has no son, he has no hope.

Things I learned while re-watching Star Plus Mahabharata (Part 18/many):
Okay, Vishnu is here. It’s literally SRJ in blue CGI. Could have blued in the lips too, no?
I like the actor they have picked to play Kansa. Very apt. Where have I seen him before?
I’ll never be over the tear drop tilaks that the Yadavs wear in this show. In my stories I make there white u-shaped/v-shaped tilaks like modern day Vaishnavs.
Poor Devaki. Having to say goodbye to her son minutes after he was born.
Even newborn Krishna has a resting bitchface.
Also Indra could have made it not rain that night.
Krishna’s petty ass is going to exact revenge from Indra later on for this.
Okay, baby Krishna has turned into Moses. And here I thought Karna was Moses.
Sheshnag is here!
We literally never think about the fact that Lord Vishnu’s best friend, pet, family member is a giant thousand-headed snake.
Woah! What a sacrifice by Nanda. Sacrificing his daughter, his only child, his firstborn. I hope Draupadi is watching.
This baby is called Nandini, I suppose. Oh no, poor baby is going to die. No worries, she will come back in a couple of years as Subhadra. Yogmaya is not finished with these humans.
I’m not clear about Balaram’s origin story. He is genetically Devaki’s son but Rohini was his surrogate mother? Doesn’t that make Balaram next in line to inherit Ugrasena’s throne?
Nandini doesn’t like being tossed around. Oops she turned into Yogmaya.
OH MY GOD IT’S SUBHADRA ISN’T IT
YAY!
Abhimanyu literally asking questions about his own mom lol.
Why tf are these Uppandavas standing up to ask questions to Krishna like they are in a classroom?
Krishna is literally Sacred Games now. Balidan dena hoga.
Is it just me or does this infant Krishna look like Devaki? Sometimes I have doubts about StarBharat’s casting decisions. And yet...
I wish he was darker and skinnier though. StarBharat literally got me body shaming a baby smh.
Dude Kaliya Nag looks exactly like Sheshnag. At least try, bros.
Nanda ko Maharaj bana diya?
Okay, Krishna, you have made your point. You don’t need to dance on this snake’s head and show off in front of these village peasants.
Oh gods, Radha is going to make an appearance from the next episode. *Checks quickly* Oh good! We have to put up with her for only 3 episodes. I can live with that.
Radha has been here all of five seconds and I am already supremely annoyed by her.
But this Krishna theme song is lit.
My disdain for Radha and consequently my love for Rukmini is well documented.
Basically, I do not understand why the ex-girlfriend/childhood sweetheart is so important to the story of this adult man who has a whole life beyond her (looks at the walking, talking disaster that is the serial, Radhakrishna).
Ah! Now it’s time for Krishna to exact revenge from Indra.
One thing we don’t talk about enough is how the Govardhan Puja story is about documenting the shift of later Vedic Aryans of worshipping the New Gods (the holy Trinity + wives) and not the Old Gods.
Indra can also choose not to be such a bitch towards a literal 11 year old.
I also think Krishna was like 7 when the Govardhan episode happened but Starbharat just be playing fast and loose with canon.
Radha is sooooo annoying smh.
Krishna and Balaram have to now go back to Mathura. Cools.
I get that Yashoda is sad but she just wants her party animal son to stay back in the village and continue to…herd cows? Party with milkmaids? Idk.
The real moral of the story is…balidan dena hoga.
Yay! The boys are finally in Mathura.

Things I learned while re-watching Star Plus Mahabharata (Part 17/many):
My main villain, Dhritarashtra, continues to have zero chill.
So good to see the Pandavas dressed like royalty again. I’ll be even more thrilled to see them in battle armour.
Gods bless Virat and his family. They gave so much for the Pandavas. They were prepared to fight on behalf of the Pandavas from day one, even when there were no alliances or armies.
Also, sidenote, for those who read Bengali, I highly recommend Gandharir Abedon by Rabindranath Tagore.
This battle prep scene is giving me chills.
Why is Yudishthira’s conch shell so disproportionately large?
Who is this upstart challenging the Pandavas?
It’s probably Karna.
Oh no, it’s Pitamaha!
Yudhishthir is forecasting that this will be a nationwide war and he is right. We could use a person like that with that kind of insight in my line of work.
Pitamaha, chill. Aryavarta =\= whole world. It’s not a World War.
I love Ganga so much and she should be an exponentially more important character in any retelling of Mahabharat with a lot more screen time. This is why women (read: me) should be rewriting/remaking these mythological stories.
Ganga: life is a not a struggle between a state of struggle and a state of peace but a struggle between higher struggles and lesser struggles. Give this lady an award please.
If life was easy we would never have to fight against the ones we loved yet here we are.
Draupadi is nice to make excuses for Bhishma but the truth is there is no reason good enough for him to have remained silent in the Dyut Sabha.
Draupadi: when in doubt, ask Govind. Yeah, but it’s not so simple, no. Govind has his ulterior motives.
I was prepared for Arjun and Abhimanyu’s reunion but still not prepared, you feel me?
One day I hope to aspire to the level of no chill Balaram always exudes. An icon.
Does Duryodhan really think these tricks will work on Balaram?
Bruh if Balaram was my older brother/cousin I would be shitting my pants on the daily.
Balaram pointing fingers at the main culprit, Yudhishthir, is my jam. This will single handedly uplift my 2020 mood.
Sigh. I have a new favourite Yadav.
Abhimanyu may have inherited nothing from his father other than his ability to trash talk.
When Balaram literally hinted to Duryodhan what he would need to do in order to ensure victory and yet he fucked it up.
I will never cease to be amused by Dhritarashtra’s inability to deal with a firebrand like Kunti. I bet he wishes he was saddled with an inept pushover like Pandu or Madri instead of this one-woman army.
The number of fucks Kunti doesn’t give about Dhritarashtra is giving me Balaram vibes.
Krishna is back to his day job. That of a marriage broker.
But I am missing the scene where Virat offers Uttara’s hand to Arjun first and he politely demurs citing that he was Uttara’s teacher and that she was like a daughter to her and therefore it is only fitting that she marry his son, Abhimanyu. It is important to note that everyone and their mom in Aryavarta thought that Arjun was the ideal son-in-law.
Also why is Sudeshna throwing a wrench in the works. Krishna is going to have to fix this.
Man, the Yadavs really tried their utmost best to install Abhimanyu/his heir on Hastinapur’s throne. First by making sure he marries Shashirekha, a Yadav herself, and Uttara as precaution. As always, playing the long game. 50 years down the line after the war is concluded and a Yadav sits on the throne of Indraprastha and another, 75% Yadav sits on the throne of Hastinapur. Well done 👏🏽
I can only imagine the reactions of people who watch Mahabharat for the first time without knowing the story following all this foreshadowing before Abhimanyu.
Did Kunti do some sort of black magic on these Kaurava lamps?
On the one hand you have people like Duryodhan full on ignoring magic lamps and on the other hand you have Draupadi asking Krishna to gaze into the crystal ball and tell her fortune.
The Uppandavas have studied for the same test that Draupadi put Abhimanyu through.
I see what Krishna is doing. He’s trying to brainwash Draupadi into believing that if Devaki could sacrifice her children for the greater good, she can too.
