UWMA Soft D/s Moments Ep 1-4

This was specially requested by @avaeryn and @thequeenofsastiel who asked that I point out the soft D/s elements prior to Nov. When WinTeam's Between Us comes out. Each of the three couples have a uniquely different soft D/s relationship. Even though Dean and Pharm are the reincarnation of Korn and Intouch, there is clear growth there that can be seen even in this aspect. Win and Teams is my favorite because it moves from that older brother respect to a clear Dom definition and that's around the time that others notice their relationship. Alright, so let's get started but first, recap.

Thirty years ago, Korn and Intouch were university students who crossed path. Despite their differences Intouch would finally win over the cold and distant Korn. However, neither of their families approved as this was a time when homosexuality was unacceptable. Despite the chaos in their lives, Intouch kept fighting with his eternal optimism, but Korn wasn't as strong. One night when their family came to pull them apart, the sounds of two gunshots rang through the air. Though their story ended in tragedy, Korn had made a promise. One that would bind them together despite death. Years later, reincarnated Intouch returns as Pharm. When he starts his life as a freshman at T-University he meets Dean, someone he feels instantly connected to. Dean is a third-year student and the swimming club's president at T- University. He, too, feels drawn to Pharm. The red thread of fate that had tied them together in their past life pulls the two boys together once again.

At the same time, we are introduced to Win and Team the best friends of Dean and Pharm. Their relationship grows as Win helps Team deal with his childhood trauma and Team helps Win feel as though he has something of his own.

Episode One

One of the things I want to point out is that Korn is not a strong Dom. Granted, he has clearly been through a lot, and he is a young kid, but he isn't strong. This is a classic example of a Dom who wants the benefits of being a Dom, head of the relationship but doesn't give the stability needed. See, you may think that a Dom reaps all the benefits but that's not true, because while we certainly get the control. We take on full responsibility for the care of our subs. I'm not saying that Korn doesn't care or isn't trying. You can clearly see he does. Especially in the part where he makes the promise to Intouch that he will find him in the next life.

Now we get to the part where Dean sees Pharm and you can tell there is reincarnation growth. Dean is much stronger than when he was Korn. He is solid in who he is. Can we bring up the fact that the reincarnated Intouch learned to cook because he wanted to be able to cook for Korn. I adore that detail because what's the point of reincarnating if we don't improve?

Okay so WinTeam locker room moment. Team lays down on the locker room bench and Win comes along. Tells in a clear commanding voice to get up. However, our resident brat is not one to just follow orders. You have to earn a brat's respect. What we see is Team giving the respect he would an older brother but not a Dom. Gentle correction but also fun, Win yanks Team's towel. He is also not kidding about wishing Team didn't have clothes on, even though Team mistakenly takes it as a joke. Win tells Team to get up and Team does albeit slowly. Then here comes Dean who Doms Team but also out Doms Win. Dean is a much stronger Dom then what he had been previously.

Episode Two

Again, we know that Korn cares for Intouch but when a submissive does an act of service. Don't act like an ass. Even if it's not great, if a submissive makes a true effort than you reward the effort. You are going to have much better results cheering for a C than going, damn you got a C, you could have done better. A submissive doing an act of service like food wants to please their Dom. Instead, we see Korn put down the food that Intouch created for him. Luckily Intouch is not emotionally tender. Instead Intouch offers the desert to Korn who leans forward to be served. This has special meaning not only to the Asian culture but to the D/s culture as well. It's an act of service that shows true love and admiration.

To be honest I typically skip the Korn and Intouch parts and it isn't till writing this that I realized why. I know Korn is a kid, but I really don't have respect for him as a Dom. I adore Intouch as a submissive so much and want to smack some since into Korn. He goes from praising right back to putting down. Yet you can clearly tell he cares about Intouch from the way he looks at him and pats his head.

Right away we see the difference that Dean has made from when he was Korn. He goes in search of a burnt omelet. The omelet he ends up getting doesn't hold value to him because it isn't from his loved one, huge change from Korn who only cared if it was good. The if we move forward to when Dean has fallen asleep in the library, we see him value the note that Pharm leaves for him. Already we see Dean treating Pharm as his treasure to be valued. Which is what a good Dom should do. Move forward some more to the grocery store and we see Dean help Pharm, when Pharm starts crying he doesn't ridicule as Korn would have. Instead, Dean wipes away Pharm's tears. Again, he is already treating Pharm as treasure.

The grocery store. Besties that are both Doms are rare, but it does happen, generally one does have a little more lead than the other. You still going to get the occasional pissing contest though. Clear example is Win and Dean in the grocery story.

Episode Three

Okay so we start off with Team showing respect to Win when he shows up at the bus for the trip. He immediately greets him. Team is a brat, but he has respect for Win. It's just more what one would give an older brother at this point. However, Win is clearly trying to show that he wants more than just that brotherly attention. Look at how he yanks Team around. His posture is very possessive of Team. The way his arm is always hooked around Team and used to guide him screams MINE. Also, FYI for those that don't know, in the book this trip is when Win Team have their hook up.

Look at the way that Dean reacts to Pharm. It screams reverence. Even those of us who have a degrading kink adore our subs. We treat them as treasures, our humor just tends to be wicked. Which you will see with Win. Then we get to see the two Doms interacting again. I honestly enjoy their friendship so much but what I want to point out is Win. See the difference in Dom. Win is very much a Brat Tamer, he has his own bratty charming behavior. Which is why a Brat Tamer and brat click so well together. Then if you look at Dean, you are looking at a classic Dom.

When Team opens the bag of chips on the bus, we get to see the flirty D/s brats. This is a classic example of fun between a Brat Tamer and a brat, there isn't a need for deep submission because that back and forth isn't really disrespectful. Notice that Win grabs for the bag but makes not demands asking for it. He simply wants to make sure that he is on Team's radar.

Fast forward to Win and Team in the locker room. We see that possessive arm hold again. Now also notice that Win prefers to command in an ask manner. Team at this point asks questions but doesn't argue. He puts up a token protest about how he can drive but when Win indicates again that he will, Team says nothing more. It's a small thing but it's in how a Brat Tamer communicates that a brat knows where their line is.

Back to Dean and Pharm. You're about to see the classic Dom moment. There is a loud noise and Pharm ducks down covering his ears. Immediate concern from Dean. He looks around and then heads towards Pharm. This is what I mean by our subs are our responsibility. When our sub needs us, it's not a question of control or what our sub can do for us but what they need from us. A good Dom owns their responsibility, as you clearly can see from Dean. He helps Pharm working to make him feel secure and safe. Then Classic Dom, he tells Pharm that he is taking him to the hospital. When Pharm tells him that he is alright, Dean makes it clear that what he says goes. There is no further argument from Pharm. Which is not a surprise considering Pharm is not a brat and is a true submissive or classic submissive. This submissive might have a light playfulness but no true brattiness and won't fight a command. However, this doesn't make them a doormat or pushover, their wants will be heard.

The whole conversation in the car screams Classic Dom and Classic Sub flirtation. The Dean drops off Pharm, look at the way he commands Pharm to wait and Pharm just stops. Dean hands Pharm his phone and just commands his number. Doesn't ask. He commands. Notice though that this does not bother Pharm. Why? Because they click. You have the right Dom with the right sub.

I absolutely love that their love language is food especially considering their past life. Once again, we see the grown in Dean when he requests for Pharm to make omelet and rice. Now fast forward to when Korn and Intouch first meet. It's instant attraction for Intouch and he makes his move. I wouldn't say that Intouch is a brat per say but there is just a touch of it. I would say that there is some brat compared to the just playfulness of Pharm. It's there in the way that Intouch pursues Korn.

Back to Dean and Pharm. Once again you see how the D/s dynamic while imbalanced works. Because each care for each other, it's just shown differently. One serves while the other pampers.

Episode Four

Alright so this episode we will start after Pharm visits Team and is leaving late at night. Dean is waiting on Pharm. Dean asks Pharm about him not answering his phone calls and texts, he doesn't jump to conclusions. He is very calm. Notice how upset Pharm is though. This is a typical reaction of a submissive, even a brat. Not answering a Dom is a big no no but besides that, it's not something a sub even thinks of doing. Dean immediately comforts, there isn't a need for discipline here. Despite what you might have read, we don't have to run around throwing out discipline because honestly if we are doing our job right, our submissives want to please us. Then Dean gives a guideline to Pharm explaining that if he is going to be leaving late to call him. Pharm questions him but notice how it's phrased, it's not in a manner that is questioning Dean's dominance. They are communicating and conversing as a D/s would, it's all about the curve and phrasing of the communication. A submissive doesn't equal doormat just not the dominant of the relationship. How Dean responds is a very good Dom. "My business is you." Again, the most important thing to us is our subs. Once again, they are discussing. If you pay attention to the conversation, you can clearly catch the more Dominant and submissive phrasing.

Then we get to the part where Dean is dropping off Pharm. Look at how Dean communicates and his body language. He sees Pharm hesitating, so he asks if he has forgotten anything. Then when Pharm offers the food, he immediately just takes it. It wouldn't matter if it was burnt omelet. It matters that his sub is offering him an act of service. There is not ungrateful bitch here. He sees it as the gift it is.

So, we meet Dean's sister, and you might be wondering why I bring this up. Because the sister talks about missing her brother at breakfast time. Pharm fixes the issue because he recognizes that this is something that in the long run will be valuable to his Dom. This once again showcases that a submissive isn't a doormat. When it's important to them, they will speak up but it's in how they speak up.

Ahh the two Doms again. Look at how Win just straight up asks Dean who he is talking to. By looking at the other relationships/friendships, it helps to clearly showcase the D/s relationships. I love how it's clear to Dean that Win is interested in Team and how Win calls Team naughty. Then we move on to the whole food feed me diabolical. I believe I explained what food feeding means to a D/s couple so you can imagine this is an area of possessiveness. I have mad respect for how calm Dean and Win were, lol.

Fast forward to Dean and Pharm eating together. Notice how Dean praises Pharm. Now to be fair in this life Pharm is a much better cook but I would like to think that even if he wasn't, Dean in this life has learned. Then flashback, look at how Dean care for Pharm. I honestly love this series so much because it doesn't just concentrate on what a submissive does for the Dom but actually what the Dom does for a submissive.

The red thread which joins us will find us wherever we go.

Started watching UWMA because I wanted to watch Between Us. But I was not ready for the way it hit me right from the start. The death of Korn and the pain of Intouch was too much to bear.

Korn was young but he was shackled in the expectations of his father. He didn't want to take over his business and saw no escape until he met Intouch. I think he knew from the start that their story would not have a good ending. Even though, he tried. Tried real hard to live the life that he would have if he had been born in a different place or different time. His smile, the very slight smile that he ever had was only reserved for Intouch. He maybe knew he was being selfish by accepting In's feelings for him but he wanted to be. For once, he wanted the love he never got.

Korn felt helpless and powerless from the start and taking away the only thing that mattered to him, pushed him down the hole where he felt finding In in another life was more realistic than seeing him taken from his life.

They deserved to love again and love again.

Like Korn, Dean's smile was only reserved for Pharm. All his friends knew he was finding someone and when he got together with Pharm, they were so happy for him.

But Dean is much bolder, strong headed now and will fight to get his love. He shows Pharm from the start that he is committed only to him.

His interactions with Pharm were so smooth, it legit made even my heart race. Boy is an expert on flirting.

What got me was the way he made sure that Pharm does not spiral out and lose his identity. They are Dean and Pharm, they have Korn and In's memories but they are not them.

On side note, it would be an interesting talk if they ever have about how they are their both uncles and nephews.

And the way Pharm always goes P'Deaaaaannnnnn. Such a munchkin. He is so adorable. And the acting. Wow. Just wow. Hatsoff.

For me this is not a story of love but if forgiveness and understanding that death in any manner kills the person and their family.

In's father had to live and die with the pain that he was the reason his son is dead. Korn's dad too lost his two sons and his family was never the same.

Their pain hits another level. Like Krit asks Pharm to forgive his dad. He has seen him suffering everyday, atleast in death, he wants to give his dad some peace.

It took the death of their sons to make them realize how small they were. They had to live with the fact that their beliefs were the reason behind their sons' deaths.

This should be adapted into all existing languages to make people understand that their beliefs are not the structure of society. We have built our walls and foundations on beliefs when they are just supposed to be part of what makes us human.

Now with all the closure Pharm and Dean can move on and live as themselves under no weight of their past while their red thread ties and bring them in closer and closer.

I didn't pick ones we know lasted because they showed it to us: e.g. Unintentional Love Story, His, Dear Doctor, My Ride.

There are a few I left off because I think they could last as a couple but the circumstances of their lives and surrounding, means I'm not sure if they would be allowed to, like Not Me, Never Let Me Go, Manner of Death.

The Knowing: Being Queer in BL

I’ve been talking about The Knowing a lot lately with @lurkingshan @waitmyturtles @ginnymoonbeam and @shortpplfedup and so I felt it was time to gather all those thoughts into one place.

I define The Knowing as “growing up and suffering with the knowledge that you are queer (specifically that you are not like other kids) and understanding that you must keep that knowledge to yourself.”

Part of what initially drew me to BL was how often many of these shows took place in what @absolutebl calls “The Bubble” where cultural and structural homophobia is less prevalent or nonexistent. Many of these stories are about guys learning something about themselves for the first time when it comes to being attracted to other men. However, I always find myself drawn to the characters that clearly Knew who they were a long time ago. What’s interesting about these characters is that many of them carry an intense sadness and loneliness that plagues them and their relationships.

I am in my mid-30s. I’ve had to unlearn a lot of language over the decades. When I first realized I was different from other kids I was eight years old. I was a lot like Chiron in Moonlight (2016) asking the question, “What’s a faggot?” I wish I’d had someone like Juan around to say, “A faggot is a word used to make gay people feel bad.” To which Chiron asked, “Am I a faggot?” and Juan quickly corrected. “Nah. You can be gay, but you ain’t gotta let nobody call you no faggot.” I know it’s hard for some of you to read slurs written out so plainly, but I grew up with them being part of the day-to-day language used by kids around me. If you instinctively recoiled at me typing the word four times, imagine experiencing that constantly for your entire adolescence while also fearing the consequences of being discovered by your peers. That’s what I survived. That’s what some of these boys survived.

Before I learned other words, I thought I was weird or broken. I knew I was drawn to boys before I even hit puberty, but I didn’t have language for existing on the ace-spectrum until I joined Tumblr in the early 2010s. Before that I just thought there was something wrong with me. When we see a character in BL who has clearly been gay for a long time, I find myself examining the environment around them to see if they suffered The Knowing.

The worst part of The Knowing is for the boys who can pass as straight if they try hard enough. I always talk about how I think femmes are stronger than those of us (like me) who can pass. They face the public scrutiny of being queer and the danger of that constantly. People like me often go unnoticed unless we’re amongst our peers or explicitly tell people who we are.

I’m writing this post as a love letter to the boys who suffered the Knowing. Sometimes these characters get a bad reputation in fandom for being boring or sad sacks, but they are the characters I love the most. I’d like to talk about some of my favorite boys who Knew. Unsurprisingly, the exact kind of melancholy Japan is willing to play with means they have strong presence on this list.

Korn (Until We Meet Again)

Korn is the character who began my discussion about this in a conversation with @wen-kexing-apologist about Kao’s acting. I pointed out that the saddest thing about Korn in Until We Meet Again is that he knew what he was going to do the entire time. The tragedy of UWMA is that Korn loved Intouch and let him in, and unfortunately learned that Intouch’s love couldn’t fix the horrors that plagued him. You can see it in Kao’s eyes for the entire show whenever we see the In and Korn flashbacks. He suffers under the weight of masculine expectation and crumbles.

The Entire Cast of What Did You Eat Yesterday?

WDYEY is all about characters who Knew. Kenji and Wataru may have been unable to pass and have chosen to accept who they are, but we know Wataru suffered for it because of his feelings about family. Shiro hid who he was for a very long time, and still hides it from most people. His trauma from The Knowing regularly threatens his relationship with Kenji. Kohinata also clearly knew who he was the entire time, and works diligently for the life he’s built for himself. So much of this show is about being gay in a world that does not value us.

Book, Christina, and Yok (Make It Right)

Book is actively victimized because of The Knowing. He left his previous school and doesn’t live with his family because he was outed by a past boyfriend, and is disowned after revenge porn of him is posted.

Both Chrstina and Yok are femme and cannot pass. Unlike many of the boys in this show figuring out who they are, they are trying to survive without losing themselves.

Li Ming (Moonlight Chicken)

Li Ming has a gay uncle and still suffers The Knowing. He is hiding his attraction from everyone until he develops feelings for Heart.

Itou Akira (Life: Love on the Line)

We experienced the entire arc of this man’s life and how much The Knowing crushed him. This is probably the most The Knowing character on the list.

Oumi Mitsuru (Eternal Yesterday)

Oumi has such a frank expression of The Knowing and how much it hurts that he likes Koichi but feels like he can’t express it.

Takahashi Satoru (Koisenu Futari)

The man literally blogs about The Knowing, and it’s how Sakuko began to understand herself. He has a questionnaire prepared to help you figure out how long you’ve Known.

Ren (Tokyo in April Is…)

I wrote multiple posts about Ren and his experience with The Knowing. So much of what goes wrong for them is because Ren couldn’t believe that Kazuma could like him, too, and he knowingly faced the consequences of being discovered to save Kazuma’s life.

Pete (Love by Chance)

Pete knows who he is and can’t change it. Trump uses this against him. Pete doesn’t want Ae to be gay like him and suffer with the realities of being a Known Gay. Pete has one of the first coming out scenes in BL that I really enjoyed.

Cairo (Gameboys)

Cairo was clearly struggling with Knowing, and his close friend took his coming out from him. Cairo is a brat, but goddamn do I appreciate some of his angst.

See-eiw (My Only 12%)

He watched The Love of Siam (2007) and had a complete emotional breakdown as he was finally able to name his feelings for Cake. Top-tier expression of The Knowing.

Shin (3 Will Be Free)

I mean, we don’t have to look much further than his entire sad existence and being pushed into sex with a prostitute in the first episode. Also there’s, “It wasn’t that you didn’t like boys. Minoru is so familiar with The Knowing that he preemptively breaks up with Yutaka after kissing him.

Kiyoi (My Beautiful Man)

The reveal that Kiyoi already knew who he was and noticed Hira the entire time? Beautiful. One of the best reveals in J-BL history.

Noh Shinwoo clearly suffered The Knowing and was discovered. His bullies still plague him on the streets when they see him. Shin Daon was not surprised by his attraction to Woo Taekyung; he struggled with his parents expectations.

Nagisa (His: I Didn’t Mean to Fall in Love)

Nagisa definitely Knew who he was and was probably going to stay quiet about it until Shun showed up in his life. What upsets me so much about Nagisa is that he is the one who leaves Shun later in the movie after pulling queerness out of Shun.

The Secret Crush on You Quartet

All four of them get a spot on this list for The Knowing. Toh, Kaojao, and Daisy clearly suffered The Knowing, and Som has clearly taken care of them for a long time.

Rocky and Judah (Quaranthings)

I love that these two explore The Knowing from a class perspective. Judah is wealthier and eventually comes out, but Rocky is poor and struggles with it a lot longer.

Han Tae Joo and Kang Gook (Where Your Eyes Linger)

The Knowing, bodyguard edition. The yearning between the two of these is palpable. It hurts that they can’t even talk to each other about it.

Mafuyu (Given)

He Knew and lost his boyfriend to The Knowing.

Kim Dong Hee (Unintentional Love Story)

He won’t acknowledge Go Ho Tae’s feelings because he feels a sense of loyalty to Ho Tae’s mom for taking care of him after his parents disowned him over the gay thing. Huge case of The Knowing.
