truly wild to think that thanks to cryosleep, red team not only slept through most of The Horrors™ (after their The Horrors Special VIP Advance Screening™, that is), but now all of their (surviving) peers are weary 50-somethings while they themselves have not yet reached drinking age
they are younger than the ferrets

Happy birthday to Spartan Ash-G099!
Today is his -515th birthday!
Tumblr media
Ash was orphaned during the Human-Covenant war after the Covenant glassed his home planet of Alluvion. He was recruited by ONI into the SPARTAN-III program, and began his training under Kurt Ambrose on the shield world Onyx. Ash was assigned to Gamma Company and the leader of Team Saber, which became one of the Spartan-III's best fireteams. After the devastating losses in Alpha Company, Ambrose decided to do things differently with the Gammas. Determined not to suffer the same losses, he secretly had the Gammas treated with a cocktail of illegal performance-enhancing drugs. While this made the Gammas faster and stronger, it also made them more mentally unstable. The Gammas, including Ash, required the use of "smoothers", drugs which would counteract the mental imbalance.
After the first activation of the Halo array, Sentinels on Onyx entered a standby state. When the Sentinels reactivated, they approached Ash. When Ash was unable to satisfactorily prove that he was a "Reclaimer", the Sentinels became hostile.
At the same time, Fleet Master Voro Nar 'Mantakree began his assault on Onyx. Team Saber was joined by Spartan-II Blue Team who helped stage a defense against the assault. Two of Saber's members, Dante and Holly, died during the assault. After 'Mantakree's fleet was destroyed, Ash and the surviving members of Team Saber remained attached to Blue Team.
Blue Team was deployed to Gao to investigate the presence of a Foreunner ancilla. The ancilla was attempting to brew tension between the already-distrustful Gaos and the UNSC by killing Gao citizens, who suspected the UNSC of the murders. Gao Special Inspector Veta Lopis was sent to investigate the murders, accompanied by Blue Team. Like the other Gaos, she suspected the UNSC of the murders, and in particular, Gamma member Mark-G313.
When the truth about the ancilla Intrepid Eye was revealed and the Gao government turned on Lopis, she dropped her suspicions and joined forces with the UNSC. However, ONI was concerned with the risk the Gammas presented when they did not have a steady supply of smoothers. To keep them out of the public eye, the Gammas were trained to be part of an ONI operative team called the Ferrets with Veta Lopis as their leader.
The Ferrets went into deep cover within the Keepers of the One Freedom--a Covenant splinter group--posing as Lopis' children. Through this, they were able to follow the Keepers to the Ark. There, they learned that the Keepers intended on using the Ark to fire the Halo array with the help of San’Shyuum Prelate Dhas Bhasvod. The Ferrets broke cover to stop them, with Lopis allowing herself to he captured with the intention of guiding the UNSC to initiate an orbital bombardment to prevent the Halo arrays from firing. Mark, who began to unravel due to a prolonged period without his smoothers, suffered significant injuries by the time the Ferrets were rescued by Red Team. As they retreated, Mark was killed by Bhasvod. The Ferrets joined the crew of the UNSC Spirit of Fire, who held a funeral in his honor. Ash was deeply shaken by the loss of his teammate, believing himself responsible for Mark's death.
In canon (~2560), he is turning 21!

What is the Office of Naval Intelligence's official stance on the matter of the Spirit of Fire's recent sightings?
As of present, the UNSC Spirit of Fire is lost with all hands. While it is not impossible for the ship to still be active due to cryogenic suspension of the crew, the sightings have yet to be officially substantiated. Until such confirmation is received, the status will not change.
That said, we could really use James back right now.

An interesting tidbit in Halo: Last Light is that Fred has a moment where he wonders if the Lifeworker Huragok avoids him because he is too tainted by death and destruction. However, after the Fred Sled Incident, that Huragok healed him. Nothing has happened to make the Huragok change its mind towards him; the thought was entirely Fred's issues leaking through.
Fred doesn't reflect on this, which is in character I think given there were also alarms going off. The initial thought isn't a normal one for him and is the mark of serious stress. For a seven-foot-tall killing machine who's been raised on nothing but war since he was six and who has endured thirty years of loss and pain in an existential conflict, Fred's a pretty cheerful guy. You can see things are fraying beneath here and there.
I think that John coming back must have been a huge deal for Blue Team in a way it wasn't for anyone else. They have lost so many, so often, forever and they get their brother back against all odds. And then getting Veta back only to lose her right away! I badly want a Fred POV book again and for him to reunite with her.
The Spirit of Fire on the Ark storyline is pretty much my favorite ongoing storyline in Halo right now, especially if Blue Team joins it. Red Team not dead! Veta not dead! Ash and Olivia not dead! A whole ship from the worst years of the war not dead! There's still grief in that- Mark dead, the Spirit fighting a war with the Banished, a thousand people who have lost everything, even if they get back to the UNSC- but there's a burning hope in it too, a defiance of the odds that speaks so much to the heart of what Halo is.

Lore Thursday - Sparks
The designated marksman of Sunray 1-1, Lance Corporal Sparks has served within the UNSC Spirit of Fire's contingent since Harvest. Known to be a wildcard, he has avoided being sent to the brig largely due to his skill with a rifle.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now stranded on Installation 00, Sparks and Sunray 1-1 foiled a Banished plan to destroy the Spirit of Fire in the spring of 2559. Since then, Sparks has used tactics gleaned from records of Operation: GREY VEIL to further improve his marksmanship skill.

okay hear me out
remember that scene where Red Team first encounters Atriox and how utterly outmatched they were? that scene where, even though Douglas manages to stab Atriox, the Jiralhanae simply moves him around before crushing his Mjolnir armor and (im assuming) dislocating/outright breaking his shoulder bone. something that's so rare and uncommon that it's unheard of. it got a yell out of a Spartan TWO. and then he gets effortlessly swatted away like a fly on the edge of Atriox's energy mace.
can you imagine how Douglas' S/O would feel when he comes back, having the life absolutely beaten out of him? it scares them. spartan IIs were powerful super-soldiers, the best that mankind had to offer. to see one have a portion of their armor destroyed and scorched, bones snapped and teetering between awareness and unconsciousness — his S/O is bombarded with so many emotions it becomes nauseating. Douglas does end up recovering, however the terror had already taken root.
this is a little bit of a stretch since i'm not too sure on the status of Red Team and the Spirit of Fire in the current timeline (im still a little miffed at how they didn't appear in Halo Infinite when Atriox was their villain), but once Douglas' S/O hears of the Spartan IV program, they enlist.
Douglas doesn't want them to. He's all too aware of the monsters that lay waste to this galaxy; Atriox was one of many. If he ever lost his S/O to those horrors, he'd never forgive himself.
Yet, S/O ignores it all.
They were ruled by fear. That memory lays waste to them every night, no matter how close Douglas held them in their shared bed and whispered endless comforts.
The nightmares. They keep coming back, never relenting. They witness the event that took place on the UNSC outpost; Atriox was there, hammer in hand, Douglas at his mercy. They scream, they cry. They try to move but something foul snaked up their ankles to bind their legs to the floor... and then a sickening 'crack' was heard.
They wake up sobbing, frantic. They cry out for Douglas, thrashing about, fumbling out of their bed, not caring for their disheveled appearance as they frantically scour the Spirit of Fire for their spartan. The workers on board that were there to see S/O running about immediately went to calm and console them, but it was for naught.
They continued to cry and howl. Their words were strings of ramblings that the workers weren't able to understand. So lost in their loose state of delirium, they began to fight back against the people that held them.
It took ten minutes before Douglas was alerted to what was occurring, and he practically bolted out of the conference room to find his S/O. When he finds them, fighting against the likes of two others, his heart weeps. He reaches to remove his helmet and rushes to his love, his words falling to delicate whispers that managed to cut through to his S/O enough for them to stop their movements.
They throw themselves out of the grasp of the workers and into the arms of Douglas, their eyes once again flooded with rivers that turn the rims of their eyes red and puffy. His arms lock around their smaller body; the spartan leans his head down, cooing softly into their ear that it'll be okay. He's okay.
This happens numerous times throughout the years; a haunting dream, always lingering in the shadows of S/O. It governs their mind at every corner, a darkness not even Douglas could quell. The only way they knew how to ease this curse is to become a Spartan IV. With the augments and training, perhaps some part of them will lay at ease. They'll be strong enough to be there for Douglas out on the field, they'll be strong enough to make sure he'll be safe, they'll be strong enough to save him.
They'll be strong enough for him.
Right?
(i like cliffhangers bc then it leaves suspense. will it have a happy ending or will angst break down the wall to introduce itself? you'll never knooooow)
THIS! I think my favorite concept right now is a Spartan’s S/o becoming a Spartan-IV for them. It’s so bittersweet and I could eat it up all day, everyday.
But adding onto this, they know Douglas doesn’t want them to become a Spartan but what else could they do to protect him? They hardly have a choice, especially if his S/o has the background of a Marine or ODST, they really don’t have a choice, they have to become the best for him. Nothing else matters.
They get called onto another assignment and moved off the Spirt of Fire, they tell Douglas that they are being sent onto another mission and they would be back before he knows it. They have a sweet moment together but Douglas can feel something is going to happen and stresses about it but Jerome tells him everything should be fine and if worse comes to worse, Jerome and Alice will go with him to find his partner.
Unbeknownst to him, his S/o got transferred to start augmentation and training, six weeks of no word from them and when Isabel hacks into their file, they’re have been listed under Spartan-IV - Pending for Transfer. Training Completed. Augmentation Successful.

🖥️,🚢,🥊,🎉,⭐,🎧 for the halo ask?
HEYA PIOTR!!! Sorry for keeping you waiting! ^^"
🖥️ - favourite AI?
Basic answer, Cortana. Honest answer, Virgil (if the combination of the Superintendent AI and Quick To Adjust counts as an answer) and Isabel. Those two are incredibly dear to me. And, of course, I can't leave out my beloved Auntie Dot. I get all in my feels about her because of how much emotion she shows for a "dumb" AI at times. It's not much, and it's very subtle wherever it *can* be seen - outside of her Firefight voicelines, anyway - but it's there, and it matters to me a lot. In a world where your class is severely stunted in the Having Feelings Of Any Kind department, especially when compared to your "smart" peers, imagine being the one urging your commander to get help despite not being... *wired* to do so. One warning is sufficient, yet you warn multiple times. Sorry, in this house we love Auntie Dot. Her firefight voicelines are also quaint and full of charm and I implore anyone reading this to give those a listen if they haven't.
🚢 - favourite UNSC ship?
Oof, this is a hard one. I'll be answering these by subclasses since that's the only way I can start singling out stuff - if you told me to pick an Ultimate Favorite Ship, we'd be here forever. Let's start with the dropships, for example. I *adore* the Albatross' design, and- oh, wait, this is about *singular* ships, isn't it. Oh, well, I won't be erasing my previous words. I am partial to the Spirit Of Fire due to it being a retrofitted colony ship. Reminds me of the Titans in Titanfall, who were used to help with terraforming planets and gathering vast amounts of crops and such before they were turned into war machines.
🥊 - who are you beating the shit out of?
Huh. Another difficult one, but in a different way. If you asked me at the very beginning of my Halo journey, my answer would've been Dr. Halsey. I've seen the light since, though. Halo is a bit of a strange case for me because if we ignore the obvious answer of Captain Ingridson and non-answers like everyone who has ever worked at ONI, there aren't many people that I can name from the top of my head I'd want to throw hands with. Maybe it's time for a re-read of some books or Halopedia pages. With that said, the final answer is Jun. And that one guy from the latest Flood short story who didn't listen to his ship AI. He's pissed me off so bad I don't even remember his name, but fuck 'im in particular.
🎉 - share your favourite character headcanon
Here's a very mundane one, and a personal favorite - Noble Six is very fond of cats.
⭐ - share your favourite piece of halo lore
I'm grateful I got this question twice because I get to discuss various things. At the risk of it being too broad of an answer, I will say that one of my favorite aspects of Halo lore is the politics of future humanity. I haven't seen a lot of people talk about the Koslovics and Friedens and the Interplanetary War in general - though, granted, before the Mythos came out in 2016, they were only mentioned on Bungie's site and the Halo timeline on Xbox.com. I'm glad Mythos gave us some names to work with, but I can't help but yearn for more pre-Human-Covenant War political lore outside of the "Innies vs the UNSC" struggle. Do not get me started on the Colonial Military Authority and how the UNSC absorbed and dismantled them and the differences in the ways the two organizations operate.
🎧 - song you associate a halo character with
My custom tag for Noble Six is "Unknown Soldier". Yes, like the Breaking Benjamin song. Six and that song go hand in hand for me.
