Explaining One of VTMB Paintings (part 17)
Tumblr media
The Sisters, oil on canvas (Circa 1890) by Percy Harland-Fisher
Percy Harland-Fisher (1867-1944) was a British painter born in Dulwich, London, UK the youngest of three brothers who all attended the Dulwich Collage which at the time was known for its connections to the art world of the time. He presented artistic paintings at the Royal Academy starting at age 17. As with many artists he painted subjects of interest though tailored to what would sell. This included paintings depicting domestic scenes of the Romany families that lived on the local common. He also had a deep love of animals which often appeared in his more formal portraits. His paintings of children were particularly popular. Most of his paintings are of idilic, simple moments of domestic life, often of subjects from the rural or lower middle class.[1]
In the painting a pair of young sisters in night gowns are opening a wood door to let a flock of all white morning doves in during the day. Two of the doves that face the girls have their tail feathers spread. I was unable to find any online analysis of this piece or of the meaning behind the doves act of flailing their tails. So I'm not sure if the doves are trying to impress the girls in a sign of mating behavior with the girls looking down in amusement on the birds for their foolishness or ifs the two doves trying to assert dominance over each other other in an attempt to determine a pecking order and to impress the rest of the doves just outside the door while girls are watching as outsiders in amusement. There is some importance to the doves displays as they are the only two doves fully in the fore ground, with their light feathers contrasting to the dark woods and are what the two girls are looking at. And while Percy Harland Fisher painting idyllic scenes did not mean that they were all just meant to be surface value beauty devoid of meaning or commentary. Even choosing to paint Romany families ( who at the time were referred to as Gypsies and still to this day face discrimination) and where with the same level of care that he applied to his own family members was a subtle but impactful choice. (see Below)
Tumblr media
Gertrude Fisher by The Lake. Pastel (c1911) by Percy Harland-Fisher
"Gertrude Fisher was Percy’s younger sister. She lived with Percy prior to his marriage to Catherine Hudson at The Knightons in Gordon Road. The Fisher family was a close knit family."[1]
Tumblr media
Gypsy child (also known as Gypsy Girl or Temptation) Oil on Canvas. (c1930) by Percy Harland-Fisher
"The gypsy community living on the local common were a favourite subject for Fisher. Many of the paintings left in the family’s possession after his death are sketches, watercolours and drawings of the local gypsy community. Although the painting is apparently a young Romany girl, when the museum first acquired the painting a local lady made contact to explain that her sister was the sitter for the picture. She was a Camberley school girl whose look had caught the artist’s eye. She recalled that her sister became bored while sitting for the picture and began picking at the apple in her hands. Mrs Fisher was called into the studio to tell stories to distract her." [1] The alternate title of Temptation is a reference to the apple the girl is holding and the story of Adam and Eve.

The second musician in today's anniversaries id Dean Ford.
Born as Thomas McAleese on 5th September 1946 in Airdrie,  Tom first began singing in public accompanying a jazz ensemble at the local Whifflet parish church dance hall. He formed his first musical group The Tonebeats at age 13, one of several he hooked up with during his teenage years
By the time he left Clifton High School in Coatbridge at age 15, he had been gaining more exposure as a featured singer. His break came after a performance with the Monarchs at the Barrowland Ballroom in Glasgow in 1963, where he was seen by members of the popular east Glasgow band The Gaylords and subsequently invited to join the group.
McAleese adopted his stage name (a moniker he coined by combining the names Dean Martin and Tennessee Ernie Ford) and The Gaylords were re-christened Dean Ford and the Gaylords. With hopes of achieving more commercial success, Ford and the band relocated to London in 1965. The bands name came from a notorious post war Chicago Gaylords street gang.
Although the band were very popular and despite being crowned ‘Scotland’s Top Group’, they struggled to break through into the big time. The band changed their name in 1966, but although they were well received , they still struggled to make progress, this was despite Jimi Hendrix describing their 1967 song I see the rain, as the ‘best cut of 1967, it did however make it to the top of the charts in The Netherlands!
Things started to go their way that year though when they played as Pink Floyds support at London’s Marquee Club, they started mixing it with the likes of The Who, Joe Cocker, Traffic Gene Pitney and The Tremeloes. They still lacked that chart success and CBS threatened to drop the band if they didn’t deliver soon, they famously rejected the song, Everlasting Love in 1967, Love Affair took the song to the top of the charts!  Eventually the band had a hit with Lovin’ Things the following year, their follow up fared less well but in 1969 Marmalade became the first Scottish group to ever top that UK charts with Lennon and McCartney’s Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da.
Marmalade went on to have 8 more top 40 hits over the years, my favourite was written by Ford and band member Junior Campbell, Reflections of My Life. Marmalade continue to show up at these 60’s shows but as far as I am aware none of the original band remain. “Reflections” must have set Dean and Junior up for life, selling over a million copies in the US  and has produced sales of over two million units. In 1998 the two were awarded a Special Citation of Achievement by the BMI for attaining radio broadcast performances in excess of one million in the US alone.
Dean lived in Los Angeles for much of his later life, but never forgot his routes, recording and releasing his final album, This Scottish Heart just two months before his death, the album of course having a Scottish theme with tracks like Glasgow Road, Bonnie Mary, Made in Scotland and For MacDougall included in the 30 songs, which also featured a remake of my fave Marmalade song, Reflections of my Life.
Ford died in Los Angeles on 31 December 2018, at the age of 73 from complications relating to Parkinson's disease.  His death was announced by his daughter, Tracey McAleese-Gorman, who described him as 'a gentle soul and great father'

Kebab (UK: /kɪˈbæb/, US: /kɪˈbɑːb/; Arabic: كباب, kabāb, [kaˈbaːb]; Turkish: kebap, [cebɑp]) or kabob (North American) is a type of cooked meat dish that originates from cuisines of the Middle East. Many variants of the category are popular around the world, including the skewered shish kebab and the doner kebab with bread.
Kebabs consist of cut up or ground meat, sometimes with vegetables and various other accompaniments according to the specific recipe. Although kebabs are typically cooked on a skewer over a fire, some kebab dishes are oven-baked in a pan, or prepared as a stew such as tas kebab.[1][2] The traditional meat for kebabs is most often lamb meat, but regional recipes may include beef, goat, chicken, fish, or even pork (depending on whether or not there are specific religious prohibitions).
History
In Ibn Sayyar al-Warraq's 10th-century Baghdadi cookbook Kitab al-Tabikh (Arabic: كتاب الطبيخ), a compendium of much of the legacy of Mesopotamian, Persian, and Arab cuisine, there are descriptions of kabāb as cut-up meat, either fried in a pan or grilled over a fire.[3]
However, while the word kebab or shish kebab may sometimes be used in English as a culinary term that refers to any type of small chunks of meat cooked on a skewer,[1] kebab is mainly associated with a diversity of meat dishes that originated in the medieval kitchens of Persia and Anatolia.[4] Though the word has ancient origins, it was popularized in the West by Turks to refer to this range of grilled and broiled meat, which may be cooked on skewers, but also as stews, meatballs, and other forms.[1][4] This cuisine has spread around the world, in parallel with Muslim influence.[1] According to Ibn Battuta, a Moroccan traveller, kebab was served in the royal houses during the Delhi Sultanate (1206–1526 CE), and even commoners would enjoy it for breakfast with naan.[5] Kebab dishes have been adopted and integrated with local cooking styles and innovations, from the now-ubiquitous doner kebab fast food, to the many variations of shish kebab, such as the satays of Southeast Asia.[1]
The word kebab likely came to English in the late 17th century from the Arabic kabāb, partly through Hindustani, Persian and Turkish.[6][7] According to linguist Sevan Nişanyan, the Turkish word kebap is also derived from the Arabic word kabāb, meaning roasted meat. It appears in Turkish texts as early as the 14th century, in Kyssa-i Yusuf (the story of Joseph), though still in the Arabic form. Nişanyan states that the word has the equivalent meaning of 'frying, burning' with kabābu in the old Akkadian language, and kbabā כבבא in Aramaic.[8] In contrast, food historian Gil Marks says that the medieval Arabic and Turkish terms were adopted from the Persian kabab, which probably derived from the Aramaic.[4]
The American Heritage Dictionary also gives a probable East Semitic root origin with the meaning of 'burn', 'char', or 'roast', from the Aramaic and Akkadian.[9] The Babylonian Talmud instructs that Temple offerings not be kabbaba (burned).[4] These words point to an origin in the prehistoric Proto-Afroasiatic language: *kab-, to burn or roast.[10]

In most English-speaking countries, a kebab may be the classic shish kebab or souvlaki – small cubes of meat cooked on a skewer[1][6] – or, in North America where it is better known as gyros where as outside North America fast-food is known as doner kebab.[11][6][4] By contrast, in Indian English, Bangladeshi English, Pakistani English[12][13] and in the languages of the Middle East, other parts of Asia, and the Muslim world, a kebab is any of a wide variety of grilled meat dishes. Some dishes ultimately derived from Middle Eastern kebab may have different names in their local languages, such as the Chinese chuan.

Bridging the Gap: SEO Strategies for London and Beyond in the UK
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a crucial component of any digital marketing strategy, especially in a diverse and competitive market like the United Kingdom (UK). As businesses strive to improve their online visibility and attract more organic traffic, effective seo london uk strategies are essential for success, both in London and beyond. In this guide, we'll explore some key SEO strategies that can bridge the gap between businesses in London and other regions across the UK, driving sustained growth and visibility in the digital landscape.
Tumblr media
Understanding the UK Market Landscape
Before delving into specific SEO strategies, it's important to understand the unique characteristics of the UK market. With a diverse population, varied consumer preferences, and distinct regional differences, the UK presents both opportunities and challenges for businesses aiming to establish a strong online presence. London, as the capital city and economic hub, commands significant attention and competition in the digital space. However, businesses operating outside of London also have the potential to thrive by catering to local audiences and leveraging regional nuances in their SEO strategies.
Localizing SEO for Regional Markets
One of the key strategies for bridging the gap between London and other regions in the UK is localizing SEO efforts to target specific geographic areas. While London may represent a large and lucrative market, businesses in other regions can capitalize on their local presence by optimizing their websites and content for location-specific keywords and phrases. By conducting thorough keyword research tailored to each region, businesses can identify relevant search terms that resonate with local audiences and drive targeted traffic to their websites.
Optimizing Google My Business Listings
Google My Business (GMB) listings play a crucial role in local SEO, particularly for businesses with physical locations or service areas. Optimizing GMB listings with accurate business information, including name, address, phone number (NAP), and business hours, helps businesses improve their visibility in local search results. Additionally, encouraging satisfied customers to leave positive reviews on GMB can enhance credibility and attract more potential customers. By optimizing GMB listings for both London and other regional markets, businesses can increase their online visibility and attract local customers searching for their products or services.
Creating Location-Specific Content
Content creation is a cornerstone of effective SEO, and businesses can leverage location-specific content to target audiences in different regions across the UK. Whether it's creating blog posts, articles, or landing pages tailored to the interests and needs of specific geographic areas, businesses can establish themselves as authorities in their respective regions. Moreover, incorporating local references, events, and landmarks into content can resonate with audiences and foster a sense of community engagement. By creating location-specific content, businesses can improve their relevance and visibility in regional search results while catering to the unique preferences of local audiences.
Building Local Citations and Backlinks
Local citations and backlinks from reputable sources are essential for improving local search rankings and establishing credibility in regional markets. Businesses can build local citations by listing their business information on online directories, review sites, and local business listings relevant to their industry and location. Additionally, earning backlinks from local publications, community websites, and industry associations can boost website authority and visibility in local search results. By actively seeking out opportunities for local citations and backlinks, businesses can strengthen their online presence and improve their rankings in both London and other regional markets across the UK.
Monitoring and Measuring Performance
As with any marketing strategy, monitoring and measuring performance are critical for assessing the effectiveness of SEO efforts and identifying areas for improvement. Businesses should utilize tools like Google Analytics and Google Search Console to track key metrics such as website traffic, keyword rankings, and conversion rates. By analyzing performance data for both London and other regional markets, businesses can gain valuable insights into user behavior, search trends, and the effectiveness of their SEO strategies. Additionally, ongoing monitoring allows businesses to adapt their SEO tactics in response to changes in the competitive landscape and search engine algorithms, ensuring long-term success in the digital marketplace.
Conclusion
In conclusion, effective SEO strategies can bridge the gap between businesses in London and other regions across the UK, driving sustained growth and visibility in the digital landscape. By localizing SEO efforts, optimizing Google My Business listings, creating location-specific content, building local citations and backlinks, and monitoring performance, businesses can improve their online visibility and attract more organic traffic from both local and regional markets. By implementing these strategies strategically and consistently, businesses can position themselves for success in the competitive UK market, regardless of their location or industry.

Local Citation Service UK
Another benefit of citation building is that it can help improve your local visibility. This is because when you list your business on local directories and review sites, you're more likely to show up in search results when potential customers in your area are looking for businesses like yours. This is especially important if you're a small business or startup that's trying to build brand awareness in a specific geographic area.
